Author Fulfills Family Request

BY ANN MEAD ASH

Jill Marie Thomas is the author of several books, including several Bible studies. Among her works are “Risking It All,” the story of how she gave away her income for a full year, and “The Day My Son Fell from the Sky,” which tells the story of her son’s powered parachute crash, which he survived.

Most recently, Thomas has written “Twisted: Mindful Pretzel Consumption,” the story of how her great-great grandfather, Julius Sturgis, opened America’s first pretzel factory in Lititz in 1861, when the country was on the brink of civil war.

“My family has pestered me to do this for years,” said Thomas, who taught math at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport while competing in East Coast judo competitions until 2010, when a mat accident sidelined her for two years. A delicate surgery enabled her to walk again, but the two-year recovery led to a deep depression. Thomas started writing to “lift myself out of that funk,” and she was soon leading Bible studies via Facebook. In 2017, when she was between writing projects, she agreed to write “Twisted.”

“The relatives were passing away, and the stories go with them,” said Thomas, who noted that her father, Tom Sturgis Jr., is still making his way into the Shillington factory five days a week at the age of 87. Thomas said she parked herself in front of the Sturgis archives at that factory to do her research. “We have anything that was published (about the business),” said Thomas, noting that the book features old photos from the archives, including one of Julius, who died in 1897 at the age of 62. The factory passed to his son William, and William’s son, Tom Sr., before passing to her father.

Thomas said she began the book with her memories of the factory. “I grew up in Shillington, but I visited Lititz as a child,” said Thomas, who spent time in the original factory at 219 E. Main St. “That’s where I learned to twist my first pretzel,” she recalled. Thomas and her brothers worked at the factory in Shillington when they came of age. “I worked at everything from cleaning rest rooms to scrubbing the sides of the oven walls,” said Thomas. “My father didn’t coddle us. He said, ‘If you want any respect in this factory among the other employees, you have to do the dirty work,’” she recalled, noting that she worked on the assembly line and her brothers cut the factory grass. Her father had the opportunity to make pretzels with his father and grandfather. “My dad told me how they mixed the dough in large batches by hand and then twisted the pretzels by hand and lay them out and put them in and out of the oven,” she noted. “He knows the old methods.”

Thomas said the book contains “a little bit of everything,” including recipes, pretzel trivia, and a transcript of an interview with her grandfather. When “Twisted” was published in 2019, Thomas had 32 speaking engagements to talk about the book lined up for 2020, but she said most of them were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. She hopes to resume speaking soon. More information about Thomas and her books may be found at www.jillmariethomas.com.

Summer Vibes At PA Beaches

BY WENDY ROYAL

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state.

Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to midSeptember. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road.

You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/ summer-vibes-at-pa-beaches. •Bald Eagle State Park, Howard •Black Moshannon State Park, Philipsburg •Chapman State Park, Clarendon •Hills Creek State Park, Wellsboro •Little Pine State Park, Waterville •Lyman Run State Park, Galeton •Ole Bull State Park, Cross Fork •Parker Dam State Park, Penfield •Poe Valley State Park, Coburn •Raymond B. The Lititz Historical Foundation’s Mary L. Oehme Gardens turn 25 years old this summer and will celebrate the occasion with a garden party on Friday, July 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event was rescheduled from June 11. The gardens are located behind 137 E. Main St., Lititz.

The gardens were officially completed and ready for unveiling on June 9, 1996, after months of planning and many hours of work by dedicated volunteers from the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF). With a donation from William B. Oehme, Mary’s husband, and support from the LHF Tour of Gardens and private individuals, there was enough capital to complete the project. The extensive improvements tied the property’s two houses together.

During the garden party, there will be self-guided tours of the gardens, light refreshments, and volunteers available to answer questions. Admission is free, but there is a fee to take a tour of the 1792 Johannes Mueller House. The Lititz Museum and gift shop will be open until 9 p.m.

Lititz Chocolate Walk Will Return

Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area will host the Chocolate Walk on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., marking the event’s 20th anniversary. At sites across downtown Lititz, ticketholders may enjoy more than 25 tastings of chocolate-containing confections, including sweet and savory options.

Tickets are expected to go on sale on Thursday, July 1. To learn more, visit www.lititzchocolatewalk.com or call 717-560-2295.

Brickerville Church Plans Picnic

The community is invited to attend Brickerville United Lutheran Church’s old-fashioned picnic on Saturday, July 3, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. The picnic will take place at the church’s shaded grove, located at 340 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. This year’s theme is “A Concert in the Park,” and the event will honor all veterans and active-duty military members.

The Ringgold Band of Reading, now in its 169th year, will provide entertainment. Starting at 5 p.m., the band will perform three sets, with the outer two being modeled after the traditional format of a concert in the park. Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat and a 19th-century overture will be featured. The band will also play music from Broadway and the movies, vocal solos, marches, and music by Benny Goodman and Jimmy Webb.

The middle set, which will begin shortly after 6 p.m., will have a patriotic theme. It will feature the music of John Philip Sousa, music from the Civil War, and a medley honoring the armed services. Audience members can share requests for marches with a band member before the concert or during one of the breaks.

Food will be available for purchase. The menu will include the church’s signature chicken corn soup, barbecue, fresh fruit salad, garden salads with chicken, and homemade desserts. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided by the Baron Stiegel Lions Club.

The picnic will be held rain or shine. Current CDC guidelines for outdoor events will be followed. Free parking will be available, and donations will be accepted at the gate to help offset entertainment costs. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating during performances at the outdoor pavilion.

Call the church office at 717-6272202 for more details.

Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster.

Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.”

This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Award-winning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S.

Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times. Davis, a recipient of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues.

Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians.

Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.
