Tri A Team Lititz recCenter Schedules Summer Athletic Event

or the last several years, the Lititz recCenter has encouraged team participation in its annual triathlon. Simon Ababou, fitness director for the rec center, would especially like to see families participate as teams with children possibly taking part in the swimming event and parents completing the running and cycling portions. The 2022 triathlon, which requires participants to swim 300 meters in the Lititz Springs outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7, starting at 8 a.m. As in the past, the event will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. In addition to teams made up of families, Ababou noted that teams could be employees from local businesses or fellow church members. Ababou said that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event. Teams may consist of up to three people as long as all events are

held outside, there is less risk of viral transmission. He stated that the fitness industry is seeing people slowly return to working out regularly. “People got used to being at home and not engaging in (fitness) activities,” he commented, noting that worry and becoming accustomed to being isolated have contributed to the trend. For Wanda Swarr, whose professional educational background includes decades of evaluating homeschoolers, competing with technology to educate youth had become a formidable obstacle. “I could no longer be as entertaining as video games, social media,” recalled Swarr. The solution was to combine learning with hands-on experiences in the great outdoors in a microhybrid educational alternative setting. Swarr started with a steering See Pathways pg 9

Participants in the triathlon will need to be prepared for the event with a swimsuit, bike shorts, racing shoes, sunglasses, water bottles to stay hydrated, a bike jersey or tritop, sunscreen, a frame pump, socks, and more. Those who register prior to Friday, July 22, will receive a tech event shirt.

In 1985, a 1929 Chevy truck was put together using original parts from Texas. A 1930 Chevrolet engine from Christiana was restored for the vehicle, and in 1996, the truck took a cross-country trip, starting with the back wheels in the Atlantic Ocean in Sandy Hook, N.J. Nearly 60 days later, the front wheels touched the waters of the Pacific Ocean near Hollywood, Calif. On Friday, July 8, from 5 to 8 p.m., that 1929 Chevy, which is operated by a group called the Pennsylvania Hillbillies, will visit the Lititz Historical Foundation, 145 E. Main St., Lititz. Meals on Wheels held a ribbon cutting event on May 18 in celebration of its new location at 1411 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Operations moved to Columbia Avenue from the organization’s previous location on Manheim Pike in October 2021. The new location is a retrofit restaurant with a kitchen originally designed for food production. Nearly every piece of equipment was replaced with new equipment for higher effi-

ciency of production and cost. The square footage of the Columbia Avenue location is more than double the space on Manheim Pike, from approximately 2,500 square feet to over 5,600 square feet. OMPH School Holds End-Of-Year Ceremonies

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic School (OMPH School) held its EighthGrade Graduation Mass and Ceremony at the close of the 2021-22 school year. In speaking to the graduates, deacon Jim Lawson talked about special memories he had from the time he spent teaching their class during the school year. Specifically, Lawson told a story of how the class “ built” an ideal friend who encompassed the Fruits of the Spirit - a friend with traits such as kindness, generosity, patience, and gentleness. During the Mass, the graduates presented roses to their parents as a token of their thanks. The following awards were presented during the ceremony: President’s Award for Educational Excellence Naomi Dresch, Benjamin Janke, and Michael Sheaffer; President’s Award for Educa-

Ephrata Cloister Posts Extended Hours The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will have extended visiting hours on Saturdays, July 2, Aug. 13, and Oct. 8. Members of the public may tour the site between 4 and 7 p.m. on those dates. Situated on 28 acres along the Cocalico Creek in northern Lancaster County, the Historic Ephrata Cloister holds architecture, art, music, and more. Guided tours at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. each day will explore the lives of the early community residents with visits to the Sisters’ House and Meetinghouse. In Colonial times, it was common to find guests at the Ephrata Cloister during these early evening hours, as the community was known for offering free lodging and meals to visitors. Tour goers will hear stories of dedication, betrayal, sacrifice, and human nature

United Zion Retirement Community’s Trinity Art Gallery will showcase Jeremy Miller’s “Season of Hope” exhibit from Saturday, July 2, through Saturday, July 30. The exhibit will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. “Season of Hope” revolves around the sunflower, which Miller sees as a symbol of hope. Community members may have seen Miller’s work at the Strasburg Library during its #StrasburgSunflowers social campaign. Miller, a resident of Lancaster County, is a mixedmedia artist who favors the use of watercolor, acrylic and collage to depict inspirational artwork based on historic

Christian symbolism. His two primary influences are his Pennsylvania roots and his academic journey. As a native of Pennsylvania, Miller grew up appreciating the Pennsylvania German folk stylings of his grandparents. His studies at Lancaster Bible College, Virginia Beach Theological Seminary, and Dallas Theological Seminary inspired the biblical, liturgical imagery that can be found in many of his works. As an interdisciplinary teaching artist, Miller has nurtured the creative gifts of students in kindergarten through 12th grade both abroad and within central Pennsylvania. Senior students study at Brubaker Homestead in East Earl and third-through eighth-grade students at Red Run Mennonite Church in Denver. The school offers language, science, math, and history at all grade levels. The 75 students attend in a two-week cycle that has them at school for three days one week and four the next. In between, they do lessons at home. Each school day, mornings focus on math, devotions, and language arts, and afternoons are devoted to history and science, much of which is handson and student-directed. Swarr noted that high school students have an opportunity to complete an independent project on a chosen interest. “It can be experiential, experimental, entrepreneurial, or exploratory,” said Swarr. One student has restored a Jeep, another trained a therapy dog, and a third started her own business. “We have two focuses outside of our Christ-centered education,” said Swarr, noting that these are environmental stewardship and living history. “Our first job was to take care of God’s creation,” she stated, pointing out that middle-school science teachers have posed questions about the educational and ethical functions of zoos and then allowed children to research the answers. “(Students) had to design a zoo that would be
