PCA&D HOHC Sets the Stage for Creatively Develops Abby Hendricks’ Story Real People

bby Hendricks’ story is a unique story, a shared stor y that Ho u s e o f H i s C re a t i o n (HOHC) is familiar with. It is a story of perseverance, of hope and of resilience that HOHC has helped guide, support and nurture.

B u t m a ke no m i s t a ke about the fact that it is Hendricks’ story, one that she is ultimately responsible for, one that she must live out. It’s a distinction that she has earned through hard work. “ They were very caring and kind, and they always wanted what was best for us,” said Hendricks of the staff at HOHC. “When I first moved in, I was the first mom there. Then after that another mom moved in, and

then another mom moved in. Their situations were similar to mine.”

Hendricks is a 21-year-old mom to Mateo, a 17-monthold bundle of joy and energy.

HOHC is a Christian-based n o n p ro f i t m i s s i o n a n d maternity home that’s been part of the Lititz community for 20 years.

Hendricks gave birth to Mateo during her 10-month stay at HOHC between July of 2024 and April of 2025.

“When I was at House of His Creation, I did a lot of activities,” said Hendricks.

“I went to parenting classes.

We did a program called 'Stepping Up,’ where we learned different things and did things that were really nice.”

Before you can teach students, you must first reach them.

Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) has the curriculum, the forward thinking and the professors to challenge active minds.

“People often know PCA&D as an art school, but what they may not realize is how deeply connected we are to workforce development, community partnerships and the regional economy,” said PCA&D president Andy Barnes. “Our graduates work across industries because creative thinking is valuable everywhere. Employers increasingly need people who can communicate visually, solve problems collaboratively and think innovatively. We’re also proud to be an active partner in downtown Lancaster. PCA&D contributes to the city’s cultural energy, supports local organizations and creates opportunities for community engagement through exhibitions, events and educational programming.”

PCA&D, which is located at 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, offers eight undergraduate degree programs, as well as continuing education opportunities and certificates in a wide array of design, art and creative disciplines. This fall, the college will be offering a new course in creative writing. “ E d u c at i o n h e l p s p e o p l e develop not just knowledge, but perspective,” said Barnes. “It teaches us how to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with others and adapt to

Gardens can be both practical and aesthetically pleasing. A bird-friendly garden explores the nature of both those worlds.

Penn State Extension Master Gardener Colleen Emmerling will provide instruction and tips for creating a bird-friendly garden during her upcoming informational presentation. “ E ve r yone c a n le a r n about better plant choices that make a positive local impact,” said Emmerling.

“Pe ople mig ht already place water or birdseed in their space to attract birds, even bird boxes for nesting. But in a bird-friendly garden there are plants, shrubs and trees that support high-protein insects, especially cater pillars, which in turn supports most birds during breeding season. Water and food are the primary attractors for resident and migratory birds, with shelter being very important for resident birds.”

Ephrata Public Librar y, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata. The speech is free to attend and open to the public, but this particular presentation is geared toward adults over the age of 18.

“It’ll be an informative experience for every level of garden enthusiast,” said Emmerling , a resident of Conesto ga . “ Simple actions on our part can help birds thrive through habitat improvement via native plant choices and less use of pesticides. Wise native plant choices are foundational and can slow down insect decline and improve bird populations.”

Emmerling’s presentation on creating a birdfriendly garden will last about an hour and will conclude with a ques tion-and-answer session.

Her talk will be guided by a PowerPoint presentation and informational handouts.

“I enjoy the variety you see in nature; seasonal

changes amaze me,” said Emmerling. “I am still working and learning to get that elusive expert designation.”

Emmerling earned the distinction of Master Gardener in 2020, after finishing coursework and the volunteer time required by the Penn State Extension.

“Penn State Extension M a s te r G a rd e n e r s a re volunteers who have an interest and enthusiasm for gardening and are trained in a broad range of horticultural topics,” Emmerling said.

Grants Awarded for Programs Aiding Youths

A d voz : Me d i at ion & Restorative Services and the Touchstone Foundation were awarded $500,616 in grant funding to help expand their youth programs aimed at reducing student conflict and improving student mental health, respectively.

The competitive grants, approved by the School Safety and Security Committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, are part of more than $64 million awarded to organizations across the state. The Advoz and Touchstone grants were recently announced by state Rep. Nikki Rivera.

Advoz will use its $244,850 to expand its Restorative School Program at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster city.

practitioner. Additionally, funding will be used for advertising and marketing expenses, rent, a laptop, general operating expenses, and information technology support. The program serves approximately 750 students annually, teaching them skills in communication, problem solving, emotional regulation, and constructive dialogue.

The Touchstone Foundation will use its $255,766 aw a rd t o e x p a n d a n d strengthen Rise Above, a youth mental wellness initiative serving approximately 1,120 students and young adults ages 12 to 26 across Lancaster County.

The funds will pay a partial amount of the current program manager’s time, pay for a program assistant and an operations manager and accountant, and support employee benefits and travel to school districts within Lancaster County.

Funding will also be used to support program evaluation led by Millersville University’s Carrie Smith, as well as communications-related costs such as photography and video documentation.

Rise Above responds directly to community needs documented in the 2023 Pennsylvania Youth Survey and the Touchstone Foundation’s 2023 Needs Assessment, which showed high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, exclusion, and barriers to mental health access among Lancaster County youths.

Through partnerships with local school districts, mental health professionals, and community organizations, the program blends mental health education, creative self-ex pression, youth leadership development, and mentorship to address gaps in early identification, access to support, and trusted adult relationships.

The staff at PCA&D is made up of 19 full-time faculty members, 76 parttime or adjunct faculty and 36 staff members.

“Our faculty combine technical instruction with mentorship, collaboration and hands-on learning,” said Barnes. “Students learn through studio practice, critiques, real-world projects and interdisciplinary experiences. Our faculty are working artists too, so they integrate their real-world experiences into coursework

and class discussions. We also emphasiz e ad aptability. Creative careers continue to evolve rapidly, so students need to know how to learn, pivot and apply their skills in different environments.

Faculty work closely with students to help them develop both creative confidence and professional readiness.”

PCA&D was established in 1982. Over the past 44 years, the institution has added more academic offerings, developed community partnerships and participated in and promoted public events.

Resource Sharing App Launched Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide. The mobile app allows registered food pantry volunteers to list surplus inventory directly from a smartphone, request needed items from partner organizations across Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries,

and view real-time shared inventory for better planning and distribution. Needs may include food and personal care products. As of May 5, the Lancaster County Food Exchange served 32 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers.

Future plans include expanding partnerships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors; integrat-

ing additional features for reporting and logistics; and onboarding more community groups that serve local families.

A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources, reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”

Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an overage of 4,800 clamshells of blueberries.

Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intelligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was beta-tested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.

In May, PCA&D graduated 93 students. There are currently more than 400 students enrolled in PCA&D programs for the fall of 2026, about 70 percent of whom hail from Pennsylvania.

“It leaves an imprint on you for s ure,” said Oakly Buscarino, a 2026 graduate of PCA&D. “It’s a wacky collective of students from a variety of backgrounds and identities - you’re bound to have common interests with someone else. Socially, it’s very fun and supportive classes have a different v i b e . and strengthening longterm stability for families facing homelessness across Lancaster County, Chester County, and beyond.

Originally launched with an $8.4 million goal, the campaign was expanded as economic pressures increased the number of local families experiencing housing instability. At the same time, new opportunities emerged to secure additional homes and respond more urgently to the need.

In L ancaster County, campaig n investments resulted in six affordable housing units located in Lititz, Manheim, Paradise Township, and Lancaster Township - communities where rising rents have i n c re a s i n g l y o u t p a ce d wages. The locations of several of the homes will help children remain connected to their schools, routines, and support systems during times of transition.

The campaign also helped launch the Bridgeport Housing collaboration with Chestnut Housing, Forest Hills Mennonite Church, and Conestoga Valley SEEDS. The partnership aims to add 12 to 15 affordable homes by 2027-28, expanding the

community ’s long-term capacity to respond to family homelessness.

Beyond individual homes, the Making Room campaign strengthened Lancaster County’s housing ecosystem by expanding creative strategies that help families facing homelessness move more quickly from crisis into housing, such as growing landlord partnerships, using master leasing and lease guarantees, strengthening cross-sector collaboration, a n d i n c re a s i n g re n t a l assistance.

The campaign also reinforced the supports that help families remain housed. Families often enter permanent housing after months or even years of instability, carrying the weight of prolonged stress and uncertainty. Through strengthened whole-family suppor t , Br idge of Hope has sought to reduce isolation, address the emotional toll of homelessness through mental health-informed care, and surround parents and children with neighboring volunteers who walk alongside them as they stabilize, heal, and rebuild.

Together, these efforts

co n t r i b u te d to a 6 5 % increase in Bridge of Hope families ser ved in Lancaster County. While the campaign was a success, the work continues. Bridge o f Ho p e co n t i n u e s to expand housing solutions, strengthen pathways to employment and financial stability, mobilize more neighboring volunteers, and prepare for a new phase of work focused on longterm community impact.

Bridge of Hope National is a Christian faith-based nonprofit organization working to end family homelessness across the United States. Bridge of Hope partners with families facing homelessness to help them achieve safe, sustainable housing by strengthening financial stability, providing whole-family case management, and fostering suppor tive neighboring relationships with volunteers from local Christian churches who offer ongoing relational and practical suppor t.

Beyond its philanthropic work, the Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster serves as a social bridge

for both fresh arrivals and long-term residents of Lancaster County. By hosting various events and interest groups, the club aims to foster deep community roots and lasting friendships among its members.

Refresh Lancaster Reaches Fundraising Goal Refresh Lancaster, a program that operates a mobile hygiene unit, has secured the funding needed to sustain operations for the next year.

In May, Lancaster EMS announced that the Refresh Lancaster program was facing termination without additional funding support. The goal was to raise $100,000 by June 30 to keep providing two deployments a week for the next year. Refresh Lancaster offers two private, hot shower stalls and a medical office for discreet, on-site consultations and care provided by an experienced health care professional. Each person who uses the Refresh Lancaster unit is offered clean towels and toiletries, and handheld hair dryers and shower seats are available

in each of the rooms. The showers are cleaned after each use, and the rooms are heated.

During each deployment, individuals may receive clothing items, including socks and underwear, as well as hygiene supplies like shampoo and feminine hygiene products. Lancaster city site deployments may include laundry cards for Festiva Laundry, as well.

Refresh Lancaster also provides referrals for other community-based services, including housing, food, clothing , medical and dental, counseling, and financial planning.

Zimmerman Appointed as EMM Board Chair Lisa Zimmerman began serving as the new board chair of Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) on May 8.

Lisa has been a member of the board of directors since 2019.

Lisa and her husband, Lee, served with EMM in Kosovo from 2006 to 2009.

Prior to serving with EMM, Lisa served with Mennonite Central Committee in Akron from 2002 to 2006.

In addition to ser ving internationally, Lisa has also assumed several roles on Mission Support Teams for other EMM workers.

Church to Host Parade Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, will host a patriotic parade on Saturday, June 27, from 9 to 10 a.m. The event will celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday.

The neighborhood children are invited to wear red, white, and blue and decorate their trikes, bikes, scooters, and roller blades in the same colors.

The Clinic for Special Children (CSC), a nonprofit medical practice that provides affordable health care to children and adults with rare genetic disorders, will hold its 35th annual L ancaster County Benefit Auction on Saturday, June 20, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. The auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. A breakfast buffet will open at 6:30 a.m.

The items to be auctioned include handmade quilts, handcrafted furniture, new bedroom suites, toys and collectibles, storage sheds, lawn furniture, crafts, farm supplies, and gift certificates. The event will also offer a silent auction with

unique items for bids. A variety of food will be available, including barbecue chicken, pork sandwiches, subs, french fries, freshly made pies, doughnuts, whoopie pies, and ice cream.

The funds raised from the annual benefit auctions provide nearly half of the CSC’s annual operating budget and allow the clinic to continue to provide affordable, specialized care to families facing ra re g e n e t i c d i s e a s e s .

was 19 when she became pregnant with Mateo and heard about HOHC. “My life when I was living with my parents wasn’t the best,” said Hendricks.

When she became pregnant with Mateo, her relationship with her parents became strained. Once she moved out, she was not in a healthy living situation.

Hendricks found out about HOHC, applied for admission, was interviewed and was accepted.

“Everything is turning around,” said Hendricks.

“My relationship with my parents has gotten better.

I’m in a healthy relationship with another guy.”

C ur rently, Abby and Mateo reside at the Milagro House in Lancaster,

support for mothers facing homelessness.

Abby is pursuing a nursing degree at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, after earning a medical assistant certificate in November.

Her current grade point average is over 3.0, and she hopes to graduate in late 2028 or early 2029 and work in the medical field as a registered nurse.

“Beforehand, I wasn’t religious at all,” said Hendricks. “As a kid growing up, I was a Catholic. When I was trying to find who I was as a person, I kind of grew away from God. After House of His Creation, I follow Him. I put trust in God and let Him lead me and let Him motivate me.”

“Mateo is this adorable 17-month-old,” said Hendricks. “He doesn’t know quite how to walk yet. He’s very clingy, and I love that he’s clingy. He is the sweetest little kid. He’s so polite.

Hendricks’ life is not easy; it is filled with challenges. But because of her hard work and the opportunities she has been given

by HOHC and the Milagro House, she has a future and she has hope.

“In my head, my future is living in a nice home, having a nursing degree, being able to spend time with my son and provide him with everything I didn’t have,” said Hendricks. “I have to

Three Lancaster County high school seniors were named finalists at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which was held in Phoenix from May 9 to 15. This achievement was a first in the 73-year history of the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair (NMSEF), which ser ved as the qualifier for the national competition.
