Warwick sends Class of ’23 off in style

Everystudent is different. Every class is different. Every graduation is different.

During the evening hours of June 2, within the confines of Calvary Church in Lancaster, the Warwick School District conducted its 67th commencement exercise. Surrounded by family, friends and support staff, 270 members of the Class of 2023 received their high school diplomas.

It was an emotional night, a joyous night, a sad night, a night filled with pride.

“Each kid brings their unique talents to the building,” said Warwick High School principal Kristina Szobocsan. “One might flourish in one area, and one might flourish in another. But when you put them all together, it makes them so special. They’re kind. They want to represent their school.”

“This is their school,” continued Szobocsan. “This is their commencement. This is what they want to make it. I tell the kids all the time, ‘I’m here to serve you.’ We try to make commencement a reflection of them. It’s all about the student spotlight.”

The more Lititz Library changes, the more it stays the same

The Lititz Public Library is known as a space that’s both traditional and evolutionary. That’s a direct result of the library consistently adapting to the needs of the residents it serves.

In that same vein, the Lititz

Public Library is a great many things to a great many people. A gathering place, a safe haven, a community hub, the local library has also quenched the local citizens’ avid thirst for knowledge. Yet perhaps the best thing about the Lititz Public Library is that almost everything that goes on there is free.

See Lititz Library pg 2

The two-hour celebratory program began with an informal gathering of students, after which the soon-to-be graduates processed to their designated seats. Szobocsan opened the formal portion of the event with remarks, and other speakers followed. After various groups of students were honored with awards, each graduate formally received his or her diploma.

“After all the ups and downs our class has been through during our time at the high school, I couldn’t be more excited and proud to see all my classmates walk across that stage at graduation,” said Warwick’s Class of 2023 president, Piper Hepler. “It’s stereotypical to say, but graduation is bittersweet and the nostalgia levels are very high, but I couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter. The title of my speech is ‘Tied Together in a Nice Little Bow’ because it’s my best attempt at saying everything I wanted to say in the neatest way possible.”

During the middle of the ceremony, senior members of the Warwick High School choir sang the alma mater.

Christopher Stauffer was honored as the Class of 2023’s valedictorian, and Seth Graybill was recognized as the salutatorian.

More than 30 Warwick staff members - teachers and administrators - attended commencement to honor the graduates.

“It’s a celebration of one chapter closing and one beginning,” said Szobocsan. “It ends the publicschool journey but begins the life journey.”

“I really enjoy the part before the show begins when the kids get to mingle with their peers and members of the staff,” added Szobocsan.

“The other part I really like is the throwing of the caps. It’s a great way to see them moving on.”

After graduation, members of Warwick’s Class of 2023 will go on to colleges or trade schools or join the military or workforce.

“It’s one of the most proud moments I’m able to take part in,” said Szobocsan. “Everyone’s been a part of this child’s journey, and you’re just beaming with pride. We’ve all had some sort of impact.”

“For many of our kids, it’s their first major accomplishment,” Szobocsan continued. “For some, it may be their only graduation. I say to the kids, ‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk across that stage.’”

At Lancaster Science Factory, kids experiment in fun

More than some complex theory or fancy equation, science is a living, breathing application that helps us understand the world around us and how all of its moving parts interact.

At 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, science is manfactured, produced, nurtured. But it is also prodded, played with and learned.

This haven for experimentation is called the Lancaster Science Factory.

Housed in a repurposed industrial

building, the Lancaster Science Factory is an interactive, hands-on center designed to spark an interest in science for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families.

“Science is everything. It’s everywhere,” said Amanda Bakay, Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “It is the stuff that makes the world work. It’s about being curious and asking questions about the world around you. That’s what we’re doing here - letting kids discover science.”

For those in search of knowledge, the Lititz Public Library is a welcoming place.

“Yes, we do have quiet spaces,” said Diane Guscott, the Lititz Public Library’s community relations and development coordinator. “At the library of old it was like, ‘Shhhh!’ But that’s not the library of today. It’s not a quiet place anymore, and we don’t want it to be. There’s something going on in our community room every day.”

Located at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, the 16,200-square-foot public library is home to 70,501 books, audiobooks, films and music CDs. The Lititz Public Library also offers newspapers, magazines, puzzles, games, databases, a telescope, a ukulele, memory kits and even printing services.

In 2021, 111,594 local residents visited the library, a total of 300,232 physical items were checked out and 10,720 people attended 507 programs. The Lititz

Public Library employs a staff of 13.

“Libraries aren’t just a repository for books,” said Guscott. “It’s gone beyond that. Our goal is to serve the community through access to information, books and materials, but also programming. It’s just a community place. We try to have something for everyone.”

Lititz is one of 14 libraries that make up the Library System of Lancaster County. The Lititz Public Library is funded through contributions from 10 sources, the largest of which - private donations - accounts for about 53% of its operating funds.

“In my opinion, the best thing about the library is watching all the types of people, of all age groups, coming here and enjoying themselves,” said Guscott. “Our doors are open. We’re welcoming to everyone. If you haven’t been here in a while, you really need to check us out. We’re also doing outreach to the community as well.”

The Lititz Public Library first opened in 1936 with 541 books on its shelves. From 1965 to 1999, the library occupied five different sites in the borough. It moved to its current location on 4.3 acres of land in 1999.

“Libraries really began to change in the early 2000s,” said Guscott. “The ’90s was about the internet, and then libraries began keeping pace with technology. We’re still evolving and keeping up with the technology that people expect a library to have.”

Ryan McCrory is the current executive director of the Lititz Public Library.

The Lancaster Science Factory is 17,000 square feet of 65 engaging exhibits that fall into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) category. Those exhibits specifically target areas of mechanics and motion, structural engineering, fluid dynamics, light and vision, acoustics, electricity, math and robotics and sustainable energy, just to name a few.

The main exhibit hall is supported outside by a 4,000-squarefoot, three-season courtyard.

But the Lancaster Science Factory also hosts classes, workshops, after-school programs, summer camps and social events.

“We actively seek to make our programs accessible to everyone,” said Bakay. “The hook is that everything’s hands-on. I love seeing kids being super curious. It’s a really cool space, and the secret is that all of the stuff is fun for adults as well.”

In 2022, the Lancaster Science Factory hosted 50,000 guests, and Bakay estimated that number will rise to 60,000 this year. She also said that about a third of those visitors can be attributed to tourism, a third have resulted from school field trips and a third

were local residents.

Lancaster Science Factory’s work is funded through admission fees, retail sales from its gift shop and donations from individuals and foundations. The museum staff is made up of 10 full-time employees.

“We’ve been working hard to build the brand of the Lancaster Science Factory and make it a place to come,” said Bakay. “It’s truly a place for the community. It’s an asset for the community to take advantage of. It’s a resource.”

Through the inspiration of founder and former local advertising executive Jim Bunting, the Lancaster Science Factory opened in 2008. The opening was financed through a $1 million capital campaign and supported by the work of volunteers. In 2019, the museum doubled the size of its exhibition hall.

St. Luke’s posts summer hours

“We’re still relatively young,” said Bakay. “When he was a kid, our founder, Jim Bunting, wished he had a place like this to help him learn. Over the years, our programming has grown a lot. We’ve added programs because that’s the demand we’ve been seeing.”

For additional information on the Lancaster Science Factory, go to www.lancasterscience factory.org.

St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 222 N. Broad St. (Route 501 North), Lititz, switched to its summer hours on June 11. Worship services are held at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. Assistance for people with hearing impairments is available during worship, as is nursery care.

St. Luke’s has also resumed its free lunch program, Lunch With Luke, every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. The event is open to the public. For more information, call the church office at 717-626-7100.

Youth summer program to benefit from Rotary festival

Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz, will again be the site of the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s Wheels & Wings Festival and 5K. The sixth annual event will take place on Saturday, June 24, rain or shine, and will include a classic car show, an aircraft fly-in, and a 5K race.

The festival will begin with the 5K race at 7:30 a.m. The lightly traveled race route is entirely on the roads of the 5K host sponsor, Brethren Village. Medals will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in six age categories, with registered participants receiving a race T-shirt.

The “everything on wheels” car show, sponsored by Boyd Wilson, and the fly-in will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Pre-Show Coffee Cruise - a self-guided cruise designed by Michael Rowen of Michael’s Motor Cars - will depart at 7:30 a.m. Show trophies will be awarded, as well as numerous door prizes.

New this year, the festival’s airshow will include a World War II-era warbirds showcase, with rides provided by the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and sponsored by Liberty Financial Strategies. Advance reservations are recommended and can be booked at www.capitalwingwarbirdrides.org.

The festival will also feature food trucks, participation of Big Dog Craft Brewing, music by Baker Event Company, inflatable obstacle and bounce houses and giveaway drawing prizes.

The event is free, and no registration is required for spectators. Onsite parking will be available for a fee. To register for the 5K and for event tickets, visit www.lancaster rotary.org/wheels-wings-and-5k/.

The festival is the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s primary annual fundraiser, and proceeds go toward the Summer Youth Experience. Funded in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, this summer program supports more than 2,600 city youths ages 5 to 16. The program encourages students’ summer acceleration through projectbased learning, social-emotional development and out-of-school environments. The programs are structured to help Lancaster youths learn and grow through enrichment, including opportunities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).
