Historic Weekend to Celebrate All-American Town of Lititz

It will be a Friday, a Saturday and a Sunday packed with learning, fellowship and community pride. The Celebrate Lititz Weekend organized by the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) will be a once-in-a-lifetime weekend that leaves indelible marks and creates unforgettable memories.
“The whole idea is to promote the rich history of Lititz,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, who’s been the president of LHF for 13 years. “We’ve had special events, live music and presentations
before, but not to this magnitude. We’ve never had this robust of a weekend. This is our biggest weekend. For the whole year, we’re
celebrating four big milestones. Throughout the year, we have a lot of special events on tap.”

Scents can trigger memories. Fragrances can repel insects. Smells can make you hungry. Perfumes can cause physical attraction.
In that same vein, aromatherapy affects the human body in similar ways, only more intensely, more medicinally. The science of aromatherapy uses the heightened sense of scents to treat, heal and promote healthier lifestyles.
“Generally, aromatherapy is the study of plant-based compounds,” said Ninette Jackson, a clinical aromatherapist. “Each plant has its own somewhat medicinal purpose. This is something that’s been around for thousands of years. Today, when we think of aromatherapy, we think of essential oils.”

There are few things as relaxing and inspiring as a day on the golf course. Unless of course it’s a day on the golf course for a great cause.
HOPE International, a local faith-based nonprofit designed to aid underserved individuals around the world experiencing financial difficulties, is gearing up this year’s edition of its annual fundraising golf outing.
On Friday, Sept. 11, HOPE International’s golf outing will be staged at 8 a.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall. On the same day at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the event will be conducted at Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford.
“For 25 years, this golf tournament has been about so much more than golf,” said Jeff Rutt, HOPE International’s founder and chairman of the board. “Every dollar raised has gone toward giving hardworking entrepreneurs in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities access to the small loans, savings and training they need to build a better future for their families.”
In addition to an enjoyable round of golf, participants will enjoy on-course activities and opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Currently, organizers of HOPE International’s golf outing are seeking players and sponsors for the event.

Venture Lititz Launches Survey

Motorsports Show Marks 25 Years

“This is just a great community- and family-oriented event, and we encourage everyone to come and check it out,” said Dean Hershey, describing the LCBC Motorsports Show. “There are things for everybody to experience and fun for everyone.”
The show will be held at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free for both guests and vehicle entrants.
The LCBC Motorsports Show will feature antique cars, classics, muscle cars, tuners, motorcycles, street rods, lifted trucks and scale model cars from across the region. This year’s featured theme celebrates pickup trucks, with a dedicated showcase area highlighting everything from restored antiques to custom offroad builds.
“We are one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast,” said Hershey, show organizer. “We average around 12,000 people here, and around 1,500 to 1,800 vehicles.”
This is the 25th anniversary of the motorsports show, which began through the men’s ministry at LCBC.
“Our first show was just a
couple of grills set up and probably 10 to 20 vehicles,” Hershey recalled. “It was just a fun idea we had, and it’s grown from that.” He noted that people come from as far away as Florida to participate in the show, adding, “We’ve had people come from 10 different states.”
The show is about more than vehicles, he said. It’s about creating a place where people can come together, enjoy the day with family and friends and experience community in a real and welcoming way.
Food vendors will be on-site, including Dog House Grill, Stacey’s Orangeade, Sittin’ Pickin’ Chickin’, Bricker’s French Fries, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Noel’s Café, Funcky Candy X-Press, Kreider Farms and the LCBC café.
Families can also enjoy free activities throughout the day, such as face painting, inflatables, mobile mini golf and RC Monster Trucks.
One of the day’s highlights will be a special appearance by the Life Lion helicopter team, Hershey said, noting that people will have the opportunity to watch the helicopter land on-site, meet the crew and experience a live takeoff later in the event.

Aromatherapy
15 years. She originally experienced the benefits of aromatherapy firsthand and was then inspired to share her findings with others.
Jackson is the author of three books on aromatherapy and even instructs courses on the basics of the science behind the healing.
“The only way to help people is to talk to people and have one-on-one conversations,” said Jackson. “Working with doctors and chiropractors has helped. It’s realizing one size doesn’t fit all. One-on-one consultations get you a lot of experience for working different angles and trying different things.”
Aromatherapy is both an alternative and complementary medical treatment. Essential oils extracted from aromatic plants are inhaled or applied to the skin and, when working with the body’s olfactory system, can produce medicinal effects.
Results may vary.
“An essential oil is made from the cold compressing of a plant until oils drip out of it,” said Jackson. “The nice thing with aromatherapy is that you’re bypassing the digestive system. You can target pain, and it’s one less pill. It’s a major, major benefit to some people.”
Aromatherapy is used in the treating of sleep issues, because it helps calm the brain and central nervous system; anxiety, due to its ability to activate the body’s happy hormones; and pain and joint issues, because of its anti-inflammation properties.
“They’re not cure-alls; they should be viewed as complementary,” said Jackson. “They’re really good at reducing inflammation. Some people wear them as perfume alternatives. Some people carry them around, and when they’re feeling stress, they’ll inhale them.”
Some of the most popular aromatherapy treatments originate from lavender, teas, eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary. Frankincense can be a treatment for mouth pain, peppermint can be used as an anti-inflammatory and oregano oil can treat toenail fungus.
When essential oils are combined, aromatherapy’s treatment options are multiplied.
“It really depends on what you’re trying to heal,” said Jackson. “When you smell the scents, it means you’re getting the constituents. Scents are naturally occurring in plants. A good scent can take you back to a childhood memory, but it’s not going to have the healing powers of essential oils.
“It’s becoming more and more popular,” continued Jackson. “I think it’s good that people know
about it. It’s a science, and I think the medical society is catching on to it. There are so many clinical studies right now.”
A mother of five, Jackson and her family moved to Lancaster from Bucks County around the same time she was studying to become a clinical aromatherapist. As part of her education process, Jackson studied clinical aromatherapy for more than 1,000 hours.
Jackson operates an aromatherapy shop in Neffsville that sells essential oils.
“I started studying essential oils, their applications and how to use them safely,” said Jackson. “Essential oils are very concentrated. Essential oils can really change your life if you use them wisely. Safety is a lot more important than you think when it comes to essential oils.”

Celebrate Lititz from
America’s 250th birthday, the 270th anniversary of the town’s founding, 65 years of LHF’s existence and 30 beautiful years of the organization’s Mary Oehme Gardens. To celebrate the momentous occasion, LHF is conducting and sponsoring four distinct events on the weekend of Friday, June 12, to Sunday, June 14.
LHF is located at 145 E. Main St., Lititz.
“It’s a celebration of Lititz and our history and our town,” said Van Brookhoven. “The vibe is family friendly. All four events are free.”
LHF will kick off the patriotic weekend with its Founder’s Day celebration, which recognizes the exact date Lititz was officially named, on June 12 beginning at 5:30 p.m. within the confines of
Mary Oehme Gardens, 137 E. Main St., Lititz. The 90-minute event will feature a flag ceremony; addresses from local leaders and government officials; refreshments, including a special birthday cake; and live music.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
Then, on Saturday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., LHF will conduct a history festival in and around its museum at 145 E. Main St. As many as 800 visitors are expected at the festival, which will include 10 different local history organizations, demonstrations, re-enactors, artisans, guided tours and food trucks.
The festivities will continue from 3 to 5 p.m. on June 14, with a Moravian Sing Sturde at Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz. That event will offer a singing hour in the church’s sanctuary followed by a tour and demonstration of two Colonial pipe organs in the church’s fellowship hall.
Donations benefiting LHF will be accepted at all events that weekend.
“We’ve never had a weekend where we’ve done four events back-to-back-to-back before,” said Van Brookhoven. “I’m looking forward to the Founder’s Day and the history festival. We had the Colonial festival before, and it was well attended. We’ve never had a Founder’s Day celebration before.
“They’re all community events,” continued Van Brookhoven, a resident of East Petersburg. “People will see neighbors from the community, and they’ll learn about local history. Lititz has a rich history. Hopefully these events will get people more tuned into their history and their local neighborhoods.”
LHF’s Celebrate Lititz Weekend will reach a crescendo at 6:30 p.m. on June 14, when the Lititz Community Band will perform patriotic tunes as part of its “A Star-Spangled Salute to America” at Mary Oehme Gardens. A couple hundred residents of Lititz and surrounding areas are expected to enjoy the 90-minute toe-tapping concert.
LHF, which preserves, promotes and advocates for local history, conducts dozens of programs, tours and talks annually, including presentations at the Lititz Public Library.
“Lititz is a Colonial town,” said Van Brookhoven. “Lititz is older than the country. When people think of America250, they think of July 4 and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I think people should remember that this is a yearlong celebration.”

Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories for motorcycles, model cars and other vehicles.
“Our trophies are completely unique to all car shows,” Hershey said. “They are created by one of the guys on our show team in the design of an old gas pump with the show’s specific theme vehicle on it. People that are into car shows, they love our trophies.”
All entrants will also be eligible to win a grand prize NAPA oneof-a-kind toolbox, which will be awarded by random drawing.
The general public will have the opportunity to win grand prizes of a Hershey Antique Auto Museum package and a trailer from Keystone Trailers. People can scan a QR code on-site and choose to enter for either prize or for both.

“You’re going to see some of the coolest vehicles around,” he said. “And if you’re not as into cars, we have tons of stuff for the whole family to enjoy. Originally, this was strictly focused on car show people, but through the years, we’ve grown it and cultivated it to be a family event with lots of cool things for kids to experience.”

Dog Wash
Faith United Methodist Church (UMC), 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will host its annual community dog wash on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is designed to offer a simple, friendly service for dog owners while supporting the church’s ongoing ministries. Volunteers will wash and towel-dry dogs of all sizes, and reservations are not necessary. The church will not provide grooming services.
New this year, World of Dog Café and Supplies will offer paw painting, giving attendees the opportunity to create a keepsake with their dog. This activity is open to friendly dogs of any size. There is a fee, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Charlie’s Crusaders Rescue.
