What possesses the power to bring a tap to your toes, to put a bounce in your step, to bring a snap to your fingers?
Swing music. And the performers of Servant Stage.
“Swing originated in the 1920s and was popular in the 1930s and ’40s,” said Johnathan Bauer, who founded Servant Stage in 2013. “It came from the American community, specifically Harlem. It’s higher-energy, joyful music. It swings on and off the beat. It has a fun energy to the rhythm, and the dancing highlights that as well.”
“Even though it’s from a specific time period, the energy of the music makes it still popular today,” added Bauer. “I love that it’s still going strong.”
Over the next three months, the local traveling theater troupe Servant Stage will bring its rendition of the Broadway musical “Swing!” to a venue near you. From
early June to early August, Servant Stage will conduct nearly 40 performances of “Swing!” at local schools, churches, parks and retirement homes.
The 90-minute shows are free to attend, and good will offerings will be accepted. Interested individuals are asked to reserve tickets at www.servantstage.org/ shows/2025/swing.
“I think it’s a show that will put a smile on your face,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “All the singing and dancing is contagious. The wonderful swing band is going to be fantastic. We have five incredible vocalists. Their storytelling brings the show to life. We have these incredible dancers who employ the joyfulness and playfulness of the style of swing. It’s also a community event. We’re hoping the audience will join in as well. I hope people can sense what fun the show ‘Swing!’ is going to be.”
Servant Stage will perform “Swing!” publicly at Lancaster Alliance Church on select dates from Friday, June 6, to Sunday,

A World of Wonder Awaits Inside the Bookmobile
BY JEFF FALK
It’s more than books on wheels.
The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy. The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul.
“Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s important for kids to be reading. It’s important for them to be
able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.”
When not on the go to multiple locations all across Lancaster County, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. The bookmobile is a 22-foot-long box truck with a single entrance and

A couple of bean bags. Two inclined boards. Twenty-seven feet of lawn.
For the Junior League of Lancaster (JLL), cornhole is more than a game. Cornhole is an avenue for bringing neighbors together to help fellow neighbors, a vehicle for feeding the hungry and a fun fundraiser.
“Cornhole is one of the fastest-growing sports in America,” said Tesla Atkins, one of the organizers of JLL’s upcoming
cornhole fundraiser. “It’s easy to set up a tournament. It’s something everyone could do and
enjoy. It’s a summer fun activity. We’ve gotten a lot of community (support) in the past. They come

equipped with a wheelchair lift and portable book carts.
“If we can fit into the space, we’ll come to it,” said Lilley. “When you get up in there and turn to your left, it’s just walls of books. We can tailor the materials to the crowd we’re going to see. We have shelves of cool stuff. It’s a neat operation. I really love it.”
In an effort to provide reading materials to local citizens who experience difficulties getting to their community libraries, the LSLC bookmobile visits more than 45 unique locations each month, places like schools, retirement communities, churches, local events and child care centers. The stops are typically an hour to 90 minutes in length and usually well attended.
“We want to serve patrons in the community who might struggle to reach their brick-and-mortar libraries,” said Lilley, a resident of West Lampeter Township. “We’re able to meet them where they’re at. We’re always looking for new
places to go. We want to talk to patrons. We want to hear what they want to read. That’s how we build our collection.”
“A lot of it is people reaching out to us for bookmobile services,” continued Lilley. “Most of the communities will reach out to us and let us know they’re interested.”
The bookmobile has the capacity to house 2,000 pieces of reading materials, including fiction and nonfiction books, New York Times bestsellers, children’s books, young readers’ book series, the works of local authors, books about local history and events, religious books, holiday and seasonal books, and large-print books. But the bookmobile also rolls with DVDs, music, audio books, kits, puppets and brain teasers.
In 2024, 1,600 LSLC bookmobile patrons checked out 15,539 pieces of material.
“We offer all kinds of services,” said Lilley. “We can help people look up something. We can print

on-site. We can refer people to their local libraries. People can check out books and return books, even if they didn’t get them from the bookmobile. However we can help to bridge that connection.”
“I really love when someone’s not sure what they want and I can help them find it,” Lilley continued. “Then having them come back and tell me if they liked it or not. Just getting to know patrons in that way is really fun.”
The birth of the LSLC bookmobile can be traced back to the 1960s. The current bookmobile is the sixth vehicle to serve the program.
While the bookmobile is one-ofa-kind, it’s not all that famous.
“Some people do know about the bookmobile,” said Lilley. “A lot of people will tell me they visited the bookmobile when they were kids. There is an element of nostalgia to it. I’ve also talked to people who said that they didn’t know the bookmobile was still running. I also meet people at a lot of stops who haven’t been to their closest libraries in a while. We’re always trying to get the word out about it.”

The fourth edition of JLL’s annual Cornhole Classic will be staged from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 15 - Father’s Day - at the Lancaster Polo Club’s Forney Field, 70 Church St., Lititz. The rain date for the family-friendly community event is scheduled for Sunday, June 22.
Players are encouraged to register for the tournament at www .jllancaster.org/the-cornhole -classic/ or in person up until 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded

An admission fee will be charged to cover all the activities that day.
“Some of the (cornhole) players in the advanced group travel to events and they’re the crowd to beat,” said Atkins. “I think my favorite part of the event is getting to play cornhole with people you care about. It can be a spouse, a friend or a loved one. Spending quality time with a loved one, you

In addition to flying bean bags and polo, JLL’s Cornhole Classic will also feature eight food trucks, music, a silent auction, games, beverages and local artisan vendor stands.

The 40 local individuals involved with the staging of “Swing!” include rotating performers, musicians and production team members. They hail from a variety of Lancaster County communities, like Lititz, Ephrata and Quarryville.
“We have seasoned performersphenomenal singers and dancers,” said Bauer. “We have students who love singing and dancing. Then we’ve got amateurs who do it for the love of it. We have performers who are incredibly talented. They love theater, and we’re able to work around schedules.”
Over three long weekends between Thursday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 28, Servant Stage will perform “A Tale of Two Cities,” based on the novel by Charles Dickens, at Warwick High School. Rehearsals for that show will begin in July.

JLL is self-funded through sponsored community events and dues paid by members.
“We are trying to raise funds to fight food insecurity,” said Atkins. “We are women-led, but we are supporting everyone in Lancaster who is struggling with food insecurity. “We are trying to promote and perpetuate social change in Lancaster,” said Atkins. “We’ve kind of

“The Junior League of Lancaster is doing wonderful work,” continued Atkins. “Even if you don’t know about cornhole or polo, come out and learn about us. It’s going to be a great day. Just get to know us a little better.”
