At Milton Hershey School, the Brands expand the concept of family

One is left with the distinct impression that parenting comes naturally to Javier and Emma Brand. But the Milton Hershey School also puts them in a position to succeed.

It is a mutually beneficial situation of the purest form. But the real winners are underprivileged children.

Residents of Lititz, Emma and Javier Brand have been married for 33 years. The Brands, who have two grown daughters

together, have been relief houseparents at Milton Hershey School student homes for 22 years.

“I come from a very large family,” said Javier. “For me, the Milton Hershey environment felt like home. Just cooking for 11 people, a lot of fun and a lot of play.”

“When I first heard about (the role of houseparent), I was a little apprehensive because it was something I wasn’t accustomed to,” said Emma. “We were considering having foster kids. We heard about it through a friend and decided to try it. It didn’t take a month for

me to fall in love with the kids.”

“It’s more than a job. It’s more like a ministry,” continued Emma.

“They are children who have been blessed. They are well taken care of. They’re given an opportunity to grow. Children need balance, and they need things to be consistent.”

“Essentially, what we’re trying to do is give continuity to what the full-time houseparents do,” said Javier. “It’s an enjoyable job because you get to make a difference in children’s lives, and you get to do it with your family.”

Downtown Lititz is also delicious.

The next event on Venture Lititz’s annual business-promoting schedule will celebrate the fifth of the five senses.

Historic downtown Lititz is easy on the eyes. Downtown Lititz is pleasing to the ears. The downtown business district has a welcoming, hometown feel. The downtown shopping district is filled with tantalizing aromas.

At ODC’s Food Truck Fest, eating is a savory adventure

The food truck fad is alive and well in Lancaster County.

Occupational Development Center (ODC) of Lancaster didn’t invent the phenomenon or even initiate it. But ODC has certainly proliferated it - and benefited from it.

“It was starting before the pandemic, and it’s still doing well,” said Ken Mueller, ODC’s

public relations and development manager for the last nine years. “The number of food trucks available in our area is unbelievable. It allows for a nice variety.”

“I like food trucks,” continued Mueller. “I think generally, the food you get from food trucks is good. When you put a group of food trucks together, it’s almost like a smorgasbord. I want to eat at all of them. We have a really

The Brands serve as relief houseparents at a student home at Milton Hershey every other weekend. They go to their assigned student home on Fridays at 6 p.m. and stay there until Sunday at 9:30 p.m.

Some of the Brands’ houseparent responsibilities, which are mainly supervisory and mentoring in nature, include cooking and making sure the students in their charge complete homework assignments and household chores. They are also in charge of weekend fun and recreational activities like movies, games, hiking, bicycling and trips to Hersheypark.

“The school is set up to teach the students everything,” said Javier. “Our primary job is to supervise. The children do the cleaning, set the table, sweep, load the dishwasher and they do their own laundry. We do teach them to take pride in what they do.”

“We’re stern but loving,” said Emma. “We’ve worked very hard to establish rou -

tines. They’re very adaptable children, and they’re very self-sufficient. (The job is) basically redirecting. The school wants them to be self-sufficient. They have small jobs, and they learn very fast. We’re the fun people. We show up on weekends when it’s time for recreation.”

Milton Hershey School serves more than 2,000 underprivileged children from prekindergarten to 12th grade from Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties and across the United States. There are more than 180 student homes sprawled across the 7,000-acre Milton Hershey School campus in Hershey, and the student homes are staffed by 324 full-time and part-time houseparent couples.

Eight elementary-age Milton Hershey School students live in the home where the Brands serve as relief houseparents.

“If you improve the life of one child, it’s so satisfying,” said Javier. “We want them to learn pride and effort.

Some children come from broken homes. My wife and I tell them that it’s good to dream. Some come from homes where no one went to college. It’s great to accomplish something big.”

“I love seeing (the children) being complete, being heard, being seen,” said Emma. “They know they have a support system. We want them to know their worth. When they come here, some don’t know about relationships with God. We like seeing them go to college and become somebody. There’s great satisfaction in that.”

The Milton Hershey School was established in 1909 as a vehicle for the chocolate baron and his wife, Catherine, to give back to a community that had blessed them. It’s a vision that resonates with the Brands.

and we wanted to be a part of that. We were trying to find a way to give back without compromising the life we had.”

“When I visited the campus for the first time, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was,” said Javier. “The school is wonderful. It’s amazing how the school has kept that vision and stayed consistent. They do so much for these children.”

For additional information, go to www.mhs kids.org.

“When we saw Milton Hershey’s vision, it didn’t feel like a job,” said Emma. “It was like, ‘We have so much; how do we give back?’ It’s aligned with Milton Hershey’s vision,

Food Truck Fest

good mixture of different types of food. That way, everybody is happy.”

ODC’s upcoming fundraiser is based on the popularity of food trucks. The organization’s seventh annual Food Truck Fest will be served up between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. There will be 16 local food trucks plying their dishes, and all the proceeds from the event will be evenly split between ODC and the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning (MTRPP) Department.

“We want everyone there to have a good time,” said Mueller. “We want the owners of the food trucks to have a good experience, and I think they do, because they come back. It’s just lively, but it’s not a carnival. We have music going. You see a lot of conversation. People bump into people they haven’t seen in a while.”

Visitors to the Food Truck Fest will be afforded an opportunity to vote for their favorite food truck, and the truck with the most votes will be recognized with a prize.

“It’s a family-friendly event. It’s a pet-friendly event,” said Mueller, a resident of Neffsville. “Everybody has fun, and there’s stuff for the kids to do. From an Occupational Development Center standpoint, we’re a small nonprofit in an area that has a lot of big nonprofits. It’s not just about the money. We’re getting our name out there and letting people know who we are and what we do.”

In addition to the taste bud treats, ODC’s Food Truck Fest will feature music and family-oriented activities. Kids can receive tours and have their

The food trucks will be offering culinary treats like ice cream, wood-fired pizza, funnel cakes, waffles with ice cream, beef jerky, bacon and other smoked meats, gourmet cupcakes, fresh lemonade, brewed drinks, West African diaspora fare, Cambodian offerings, Caribbean/Latin American fusion, authentic Mexican dishes, Southern-style soul food and Middle Eastern cuisine. The food truck operations originate from Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Red Lion, New Holland and Columbia.

photos taken with MTRPP Department construction vehicles, a Manheim Township fire truck and a Manheim Township police cruiser.

“It’s a great event,” said Mueller. “People get excited about it. People tell us they love the food truck event. There’s a lot of really good word of mouth going on with this event. We’ve raised more money every year.”

More than 5,000 people are expected to attend ODC’s Food Truck Fest. Organizers are hoping to raise $7,000 for ODC, a social services organization located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, which provides job training and occupational opportunities for local individuals with developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities.

ODC is funded through personal and business donations, foundation grants, Medicaid and labor

fees charged to participating businesses.

“(Proceeds from the Food Truck Fest) allow us to keep doing what we’re doing,” said Mueller. “During the day, our participants are volunteering in the community or exploring work opportunities. A lot of that money helps us do those things.”

ODC’s nearly 40 participants range in age from 20 to 83, and they reside in all parts of Lancaster County. The organization’s staff is made up of 13 mostly fulltime employees.

“We are providing (participants) with vocational skills training,” said Mueller. “They could be utilized in the marketplace. Hopefully, we can find them work in the community. We want them to find a job or help them find a job. The push is to get our folks into the community.”

Pickup will be available from Christ the King Community Church, 2449 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, from

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from the Lord’s House of Prayer, 133 E. Vine St., Lancaster, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost of a meal includes a half-chicken from Peters’ BBQ, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce, and water.

To order by Tuesday, June 3, call or text Dani at 717-283-7851, Rosene at 717-940-3418, or Marilyn Hollinger at 717-723-1094.

Visitors to last year’s ODC Food Truck Fest line up to sample a vendor’s wares.

Taste of Lititz

Venture Lititz will present its annual downtown block party, Taste of Lititz, on Friday, June 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. Four blocks of East Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic - from Broad Street to Water Street - and opened to foot traffic, as visitors are afforded an opportunity to sample small portions of dishes being offered by 30 food-related local businesses.

“As time has gone on, we’ve had more and more options for good food downtown,” said Emily Allen, who’s been Venture Lititz’s executive director for two years. “There’s just a wide variety of things that taste good. These (business owners) pour their hearts and soul into it. They are passionate about making foods that you might not otherwise experience.”

Taste of Lititz is free to attend, but there are some costs associated with samplings. Other downtown businesses will offer extended shopping hours that evening.

“It feels homey,” said Allen. “You can get in and out of the streets easily. It’s a fun way to experience Lititz in a slightly different way. It’s also a way to see what

some of the businesses have to offer. Restaurants come out and sell small things, little samples. It’s kind of like, ‘Oh, I’ve never been here before. Let’s try this.’ It’s a different atmosphere downtown.”

During the event, Venture Lititz will celebrate its 20th anniversary of supporting downtown businesses and bringing people to Lititz.

“People love to eat,” said Allen. “This is an excuse to try a lot of different restaurants at one time, which is kind of great. Everyone in town sets up something, not just the eateries.”

“It’s a good opportunity for businesses to introduce themselves to people,” added Allen. “This is a good chance to taste something and then maybe go back and experience a full meal.”

The mood of the event will

be stoked by live music, and visitors will be afforded an opportunity to contribute to Venture Lititz’s 10,000 flowers mural project. About a dozen local nonprofits will be there operating information booths highlighting their services and the roles that they play in the community.

“It feels like summer is getting started,” said Allen. “You get to see everyone interacting. It just kind of kicks off summer in a cool way. You don’t get to experience that in every small town. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year.”

As many as 9,000 people are expected to savor a Taste of Lititz.

“Everybody’s welcome,” said Allen. “Each of our events is a totally separate thing. This is our one and only event in the warm

Varner finished 23rd in the 100 breaststroke, 24th in the 50 freestyle and 27th in the 100 butterfly, along with swimming on four relays at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. This is his second consecutive season earning Academic All-District honors.

months. This is another time to bring everyone together and celebrate the community and everything that Lititz has to offer.”

Between setting up, tearing down and cleaning up, the work of some 40 volunteers is required to make Taste of Lititz a reality.

“Venture Lititz has one full-time employee and one part-time employee,” said Allen. “Every other hour is a volunteer hour. We report hundreds of volunteer hours to the state throughout the year. We have an incredibly active board. Without our board and all the volunteers, we’d be dead in the water. It’s what makes Lititz so amazing, all these people putting time back into their community.”
