A Colorful Vibe Students Complete School Mural BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Warwick High School (WHS) art teacher William Cifuni approached senior Liz Buige with a request for her to create a mural in the art department hallway, Buige took Cifuni’s ideas and drew some sketches. “He liked (my design),” said Buige, who soon asked her friend and fellow senior Monica Dull for help with the project. The students began painting in October 2021, working on the mural during one period a day when they both had study hall. By late March 2022, the walls outside Cifuni’s classroom sported bright flowers, insects, and plants against a backdrop of yellow, pink, and orange stripes arranged in a rainbow pattern on the wall. According to Buige, Cifuni is a fan of Peter Max, a GermanAmerican artist known for his brightly hued works reminiscent of 1960s pop art. “He said he really liked (Max’s work), and he

Visitors to Taste of Lititz will be able to sample food and beverages from local restaurants.

Celebrating A Taste Of Lititz celebration highlighting all things Lititz, including its food, music, and artistic community, will take place on Friday, June 3, from 5 to 9 p.m. as part of the annual Taste of Lititz event, presented by Venture Lititz. The neighborhood block party will be set up on Main Street in downtown Lititz, which will be closed from Water Street to Broad Street. “The event was canceled in 2020 and reimagined as a 10-day event last year,” said Rebecca Branle, executive director of Venture Lititz. “Put simply, we really haven’t had a

full-blown Taste of Lititz in two years.” During the event, Lititz-area restaurants will sell small “tastes” of their most popular dishes, allowing attendees to sample menu items from multiple vendors. Beverages, including beer, wine and spirits, will also be offered for sale. “All the restaurants will be outside on the street,” Branle explained. “ We plan to have between 20 and 30 restaurants represented. Taste (of Lititz) includes our downtown restaurants, as well as other restaurants and food vendors within the 17543 ZIP code.” New this year, there will be no

charge to attend the event. “We’ve committed ourselves to creating events that don’t require payment for access. We want everyone to feel welcome without barriers,” said Branle. “The only cost will be for the tastes of food and drink.” Multiple bands will play at several locations throughout the night, and family-friendly games will be hosted by local nonprofit organizations. The Lititz Rotary Club will have a special table where members will share information about their relief efforts in Ukraine. The Lititz Rotary has paired with a Rotary Club in Poland to provide funding for food, shelter, and medicine for refugees.

The Lititz club will offer a special dish, a “Taste of Ukraine,” and will accept donations for relief efforts. Lititz Rotary president Igor Kuzmenko is from Ukraine and has welcomed his sister and her daughters to his home since the war began. His niece Anya plans to sing some Ukrainian songs at Taste of Lititz. Another aspect of the event that is new this year is the Lititz Art Association’s plein air art event. On the morning of Taste of Lititz, artists will paint Lititz scenes around town - outside in the open air - and then bring their work back to Church Square for judging. Their work will then be offered for sale. See Taste Of Lititz pg 5

Transit and Highway Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP outlines the county’s federally funded transportation improvement priorities and is required for the county to receive and spend federal transportation dollars. The public will have the opportunity to provide comments on the TIP and related documents until Monday, June 13. The TIP is a listing of highway, bridge, transit, and miscellaneous transportation projects that are expected to move through the project development process over the next four years. The accompanying Air Quality Conformity Analysis (AQCA) document demonstrates project conformity to federal air quality standards. The draft TIP, the AQCA report, and related documents are available for review at www.lanc ompo.org/2023-tip. These documents are also available for review at the Lancaster County Planning Department at the Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster. wanted me to pull ideas from him,” said Buige. “But he let me keep an open mind.” Buige added that much of her work has had a similar look to that of Max, so she suspects that is why Cifuni chose her to design the mural. “I wanted it to be bright,” said Buige of the planets and flowers that light up the dark hallway. “I centered it with the orange and yellow lines and the sun. Then I came up with ideas on top of that. It took long to figure out how it would look,” she recalled. Buige has been considering an art career since about eighth grade, and when she became a WHS freshman, she started taking art classes. “I have taken about every art class (that is offered),” said Buige, who added that by the time she was a junior she knew she wanted to go into art education. After graduating from WHS, she plans to take a gap year to earn money to pay for college and then to possibly attend Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia or a university such as Millersville or Kutztown. Dull said that her family has art history. “I have always been really into art,” she

noted, adding that her mother teaches art, mostly acrylic and watercolor techniques, to groups of children and individual adults in the gallery at their home. Dull said that, like Buige, she has taken a lot of art classes. She noted that she and Buige, whom she called her best friend, also take Advanced Placement classes together. “I am thinking of majoring in art and minoring in fashion,” said Dull, who is considering attending Albright College in Reading. Dull especially enjoyed working with her friend on the mural. “This project was lots of fun to do together,” she stated. Buige agreed, noting that she likes the idea that their art and ideas will be in the school hallway well into the future. “It’s a great senior year kind of thing to put my art out there, but it was a lot of work, too,” she stated, adding that since Cifuni will retire soon, she was grateful for the chance to do this for him. “(Cifuni) encouraged me to (continue with art) after high school, and I can’t thank him enough for it,” she said. “I wanted to do something special and leave something that will be dedicated to him.”

United Zion Retirement Community’s Trinity Art Gallery is exhibiting the impressionist pastel works of Kathryn Reis in May. The exhibit will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through May 30. This exhibit will showcase Reis’ diverse body of works from still lifes to animals and landscapes to portraits. Reis developed a love of creating in childhood, when she enjoyed drawing. She became an artist after realizing she was looking for a new direction in life and finding that art gave her peace and contentment. In her art, Reis explores her love for nature, trees and light, and she seeks to instill joy in viewers. She is also interested

in the intensity of colors and contrast. She believes that her artwork is an extension of herself as she puts a bit of her personality and self into each piece she paints. Reis has an associate degree in computer science from Penn State University and has taken many classes at York Art Association. She is mentored by Phyllis Disher Fredericks. He was surprised with what he found, however. “It was a California kingsnake, a nonvenomous species from the West Coast,” he said. Viola, temporarily named the snake Zeebee while the owner search is underway. “He has a black and white pattern that she thought sort of looked like a zebra, so she came up with ‘Zeebee,’” Rothacker noted. The small snake measures just over a foot long. “If I had to guess, I would say it probably hatched in the summer of 2021,” Rothacker explained. The snake likely hibernated through the winter and recently woke up. He doesn’t think the kingsnake has traveled far from its home, but he can’t be totally sure. “It most likely wouldn’t have moved more than a few hundred yards from its original location,” he said, but since there isn’t much development around where the snake was found, Rothacker suspects it could have hitched a ride on the undercarriage of a car and ended up far from home. Rothacker noted that when he rescues reptiles, he typically won’t post pictures of the animal but will publicize some basic information, hoping the rightful owner will reach out. In Zeebee’s case, pictures had already made the rounds on social media by the time the snake was rescued, so Rothacker will use the snake’s markings to help identify it when it’s claimed. Rescuing a snake is just part of a typical day’s work for Rothacker. He’s rescued snapping turtles stuck in concrete basins and snakes trapped in

Many times, the animals can just be released once they are freed, but in Zeebee’s case, it was likely the snake was someone’s pet. “We would appreciate any help … locating his family, who are probably worried sick about him,” he said. While Zeebee waits to go home, he’s in good company at Forgotten Friend, where two other California kingsnakes have a permanent home. Rothacker emphasized that it’s common for people to see snakes throughout the region as the weather warms up, but

that there’s likely no cause to worry. “We have so few venomous snakes in Pennsylvania,” he said. “If you see a snake, you are welcome to take a picture of it and we will ID it for free. We’ll remove your anxiety about it.” He also noted that he’s made a few videos of Zeebee, which can be viewed on the sanctuary’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/Forgotten FriendReptileTV. The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Historical Society Sets Program The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will hold its next educational program, “Artistic Features Enhancing Stove Plates,” on Wednesday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata. Richard Martin, a historical researcher from Penryn, will return to share his knowledge of the artistic designs used to enhance iron stoves. Martin will offer information on iron masters’ identities, manufacturing data, and more. The program is free and open to the public.
