Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Lancaster will present a program on “Hate in Lancaster County” on Sunday, June 2, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. The program is free and open to the public. The program will address the Lancaster community’s response to hatred directed at individuals and groups in Lancaster County. Lancaster-area students are rehearsing to present “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” in four shows at Lancaster Bible College on May 18 and 19. The all-teenage cast will perform songs from the 1950s through the present. Broadway show tunes and songs from the 1980s will be included.

The Lititz EL Spring Festival will take place on Friday, May 17, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Lititz Elementary School, 20 S. Cedar St. The event will offer face painting, free carnival games, and a bake sale, along with a dunk tank featuring teachers. A sidewalk chalk competition, which there is a nominal fee to enter, will offer prizes, and Family Night Bingo will take place at no cost, although donations will be accepted. A gaga ball competition will be held, with kindergartners and first-graders from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m., second- through fourth-graders from 5:15 to 6 p.m., and fifth- and sixth-graders from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Lititz Elementary PTO.

When 170 Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) seniors gather with their family members, their friends, and faculty members in the school’s Berger Gymnasium on Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. to graduate, Class of 2019 valedictorian Sebastian Klemmer and salutatorian Ben Ryan will be prepared to give speeches. Klemmer is the son of Edwin Klemmer and Karen Mertzman, both of Lancaster. At LCHS, Klemmer has been involved in the music program, serving as student director of the marching band during his senior year. Long’s Park Concert Series Women’s Leadership Forum To Highlight Well-Known Music Honors Former Lititz Resident

Celtic band Réalta will join a lineup of a variety of musical groups to play at Long’s Park as part of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series. This year, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will emphasize familiar tunes, with a tribute weekend scheduled in June. By Ann Mead Ash

Steve Deck, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that the group had a specific goal in mind when choosing performers for this year’s schedule. “Getting more music

everybody knows was key,” said Deck. “This year we will have several bands that will play more familiar music.” With that aim in mind, the committee has lined up an Eagles tribute band, an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other See Long’s Park pg 3

In May of 2016, when Natalie Miller was a freshman at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), she became aware of the part Major Marybelle Johns Nissly played in the history of the MTHS marching band. “I noticed Major Nissly had tripled the size of the band and created the middle school band,” recalled Miller. “She did so many things to help MTHS, but we didn’t have anything in the school to recognize her accomplishments.” Nissly was raised in Lititz and was a member of the U.S. military who initiated and directed the first armed forces band composed of women - the Women of the Air Force Band. She served MTHS for several years beginning in 1947. To bring recognition to Nissly, Miller See Forum pg 4

has announced that space is still available for its bus trip to Ambler Arboretum and Highlands Mansion and Gardens on Thursday, May 23. Attendees are asked to arrive by 8 a.m. at the parking lot at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 Market St. The bus will depart at 8:15 a.m. and will return by 5 p.m. The set cost, which is discounted for club members, includes bus transportation, the driver’s fee/tip and guided tours. 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, will present a concert by the Ragtime Willi Band on Thursday, May 23, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. The Ragtime Willi Band is a four-piece funky folk ensemble featuring Americana music. The group presents an eclectic mix of traditional music, country blues, bluegrass, old-time country music, original tunes, and more.
