Bigger Lititz Library Will Be Better

If indeed a library is only as strong as its community, then the Lititz Public Library (LPL) is flexing its muscles. LPL’s current expansion project signifies health, growth and evolution. It is a literacy expansion.

“We get to reach so many people,” said Carolyn Reiste, the executive director of the LPL over the last two years. “I love being able to welcome people into the library, just being able to serve people. Lititz is something so special. Everyone loves the library. They’re so supportive, and we love them. I enjoy being able to make their day and give them something to look forward to.”

Some of its offerings aren’t exactly what one might consider traditional Olympic sports. But what makes Special Olympics so special is that it unlocks potential, it explores the therapeutic nature of athletics, and it enhances lives.

“My favorite part is watching the growth of athletes as people,” said Lynn Lopez, a team lead for Special Olympics Lancaster.

the structure will take shape during the summer, interior work will be performed during the fall months, and the entire expansion project could be complete by December.

In the developmental world of nonprofits, the Lancaster Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (LHCC) is in its infancy; it’s a newborn. But in a short period of time, LHCC has laid a stable foundation upon which growth can be nurtured.

Essential for continued maturation are public awareness and community support. Once it does blossom, LHCC will connect resources to those in need, unlock the economic potential of the local Latino community and make Lancaster County a better place to live.

“It’s in its baby stages, but people are beginning to reach out,” said Esther DeWoody, the founder and president of LHCC. “The mission is to reach the Latino business owners and educate members of the Latino community about the community resources available to them, so they can do better in education and financially. We want Latino business owners to know that it’s possible, that they can do it. People are willing to go the extra mile to welcome the Latino community and work with them.”

After putting thoughts into motion in April of 2025 and launching the organization’s website in November, DeWoody formally founded LHCC in March of this year. DeWoody is currently operating the fledgling organization from her Manheim Township home but hopes to move into a more permanent brick-and-mortar office by the end of this summer and then eventually add staff.

Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction Set

The 13th annual Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction will take place on Saturday, May 16, at Metzler’s oneroom school, 535 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. It will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the final item is sold. The family-friendly event will feature live and silent auctions, a bake sale, homemade food, children’s activities, and spikeball tournaments.

dreds of volunteers and donors in support of the Hope Library and Christian Training Center in Portau-Prince, Haiti. The library provides business training rooted in Christian ethics, along with access to literature in French, Creole, and English. As Haiti continues to face political and economic challenges, support for these grassroots initiatives continues to be sought. All day-of-event proceeds will directly

benefit the Hope Library and Transformation Haiti’s Paradigm Shift Program, led by Pastor Nelson and Sue Martin.

The auction will once again be facilitated by Beiler-Campbell Auction Services and auctioneer Curvin Horning, with support from more than 125 volunteers. The items up for bids will include a small greenhouse, a newly equipped man cave or she shed, swing sets, a fire pit, coolers,

“It’s coming. I’m out there. I’m networking,” said DeWoody. “We want people to know we’re here and we’re not going anywhere. We’re going to build a strong Chamber.”

“We have to unite,” she added. “We have to want to make things better as a community, and not just Latinos. Everybody sees the need for this. It’s something people have been looking for.”

Part of LHCC’s immediate future is a culturally based, Latino-themed event in Lancaster city on Friday, June 5. Though some of the details are still being finalized, LHCC has already secured sponsorships for the event.

In addition, LHCC is also planning a community outreach gathering in August.

“My favorite part is that (LHCC) will help people in the Latino community,” said DeWoody. “This will better their lives because of the resources they don’t know exist. The only requirement for membership is that you have to be able to give back to

the community in some way. I want people to work together as a family. I don’t want them to look at each other as members; I want them to look at each other as family members.”

As part of its organizing, LHCC has been working with similar organizations, like the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Currently, LHCC counts 25 individuals as part of its membership.

“They’re leaders who can be mentors and who can be teachers,” said DeWoody. “They’re strong leaders from Lancaster County who are willing to work with the community, and they don’t have to be Latinos.”

According to census data, more than 65,000 Latinos reside in Lancaster County, and Hispanics represent about 12% of the county’s total population. The highest concentration of Latinos resides in the city, where they make up about 40% of Lancaster’s population.

Data about the number of Latino-owned businesses in Lancaster County is less clear.

“I feel like there are voices that

aren’t at the table, and I want to be their voice,” said DeWoody. “I want to elevate their voices. It’s about community opportunities for our community. I want to build something where people feel supported and where they can grow together.

I want people lifting each other up. There are big organizations out there who are helping the community, and I think we can work better together.”

“I want to be a bridge between systems,” continued DeWoody. “I ask people, ‘What do you need? What

is the community looking for?’ I ask people, ‘How can I help you?’” Passion provides fuel for the entrepreneurial spirit.

“We’re very proud people,” said DeWoody. “We’re very into our culture. You have to look at each of us as from different cultures, and we’re all very proud of our cultures. That’s something that’s very important for us to get people to understand. We’re also very family oriented.”

Decades Opens Ice Cream Bar

The Ice Cream Bar at Decades opened its second season with a celebration on April 17. The Ice Cream Bar features a variety of ice cream flavors, alcoholic and nonalcoholic milkshakes, frozen treats, savory snacks, Decades cocktail pouches, beer on tap, new iced coffee, Decades margaritas, Shifty canned cocktails, and more. Jared Byas, a popular podcaster whose show has nearly 80,000 followers, will preach on the “Seven Moments That Changed How Scholars Saw the Bible” on

Special Olympics

“Not just as athletes, but as individuals,” said Anne Phillips, a sports team leader for Special Olympics Lancaster. “I have one particular athlete who was shy and reserved, and now he’s not afraid to speak with anybody. He’s developed quite a bit of confidence.”

Special Olympics Lancaster uses sports to serve local residents with intellectual disabilities and delayed development issues. Athletes are mentored by coaches, learn the finer points of sports and are afforded opportunities to interact with peers and other members of the community.

Those opportunities that Special Olympics Lancaster provide are free to participants and their families.

Special Olympics Lancaster does not maintain a brick-and-mortar office space, but its management team meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at Keystone Custom Homes, 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.

“Many times, after high school, our athletes don’t have ways to enjoy sports,” said Phillips. “We’re able to bring joy to the athletes and their families. They’re able to compete with peers. That’s important,

mentally, physically and socially.”

“We want to extend an opportunity to everyone to try a sport maybe they haven’t tried before,” said Lopez.

The sports offered by Special Olympics Lancaster are seasonal and correspond to those offered by Special Olympics Pennsylvania. Softball is offered in the summer season, which runs from June through August, while the fall season features volleyball, bocce, power lifting and long-distance walking/running. Special Olympics Lancaster’s winter season offers bowling and snow shoeing, and the spring season includes swimming, basketball and tennis.

Seasons consist of learning, practicing and competing on the local, area and state levels. Special Olympics Lancaster utilizes athletic venues at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster Bible College, Lititz recCenter, John Beck Elementary School in the Warwick School District and YMCA of the Roses in the city.

“(Athletes) develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship,” said Lopez, a resident of

“When I asked staff what we need for the patrons, basically they told me we need more space,” said Reiste. “There’s been a 17% population growth in the community since we built this building. We’ve had to wait list some of our programs, both for kids and adults. We see ourselves as a community space, and we haven’t been able to be a community space.”

provide enhanced programming space for kids, for activities like educational projects and arts and crafts. In addition, the new addition will include two small study/tutor rooms, a small conference room and a new office.

The project will add 1,865 square feet to LPL’s existing 16,200-squarefoot structure.

“People are coming, they’re using the library more and they’re doing it in different ways,” said Reiste. “The library is evolving to meet the

“It often helps parents,” said Phillips, a resident of Manheim borough. “Some parents are feeling very alone and they learn information like, ‘My athlete does that too.’

It’s helpful for parents as well as the athletes. Some parents think their children couldn’t do anything, and they’re finding out they can play the sports they love.”

Currently, about 165 individuals are registered across Special Olympics Lancaster programs. They’re Lancaster County residents between the ages of 8 and 60.

“They are people. They are to be respected just like anyone else,” said Phillips. “For some, it’s social. But we have many serious, competitive athletes. Some are even elite athletes. They train year-round.”

“These are people who love playing sports for the true love of it,” said Lopez. “They are doing everything they can to compete at the level they’re at. They’re going to do their best.”

Special Olympics Lancaster benefits from the contributions of

about 40 volunteers. Because of safety guidelines, Special Olympics Lancaster maintains a one-to-four coach-to-athlete ratio, and there are currently waiting lists for athletes in some sports.

Right now, Special Olympics Lancaster is seeking volunteer coaches for its summer softball season.

“The name ‘Special Olympics’ is as popular as Coca-Cola,” said Lopez. “We’re one of the most recognizable brand names. But do people understand who we are? No, not always. Some people think it’s a one-day or two-day function. We are that program targeting people with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. We’re much bigger than people think we are.” Special Olympics was established in Lancaster in 1975. There are more than 50 active Special Olympics programs across Pennsylvania.

“We’re giving athletes a place to fit in, be competitive and learn a sport,” said Phillips. “We need volunteers. We train volunteers. We could be so much bigger and meet so many more needs of the people of Lancaster County.”

Discussion about the expansion project began in February of 2025, and about two months later, LPL launched fundraising efforts to support it. Currently, LPL has raised about $1.35 million of the $1.7 million needed to finance it, through generous business partners and community members.

“Donors have been very supportive of us,” said Reiste, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s kind of a combination of grants and businesses and private donors. We also sent out campaign letters. We’re still working on it.”

LPL offers patrons free WiFi, receives more than 175,000 visits each year and has an information collection that includes 66,000 items - books, audio books, largeprint books, DVDs, games, music and educational and activity kits.

The local public library also sponsors dozens of programs, like story times, summer reading programs, concerts, Lititz Historical Foundation presentations, technology assistance and outreach to local retirement communities.

LPL is one of 14 independent libraries that operate as part of the Library System of Lancaster County and serves the areas of Lititz

Borough, Warwick Township and Elizabeth Township, where a total of more than 33,000 locals reside.

“A lot of our patrons are families,” said Reiste. “They’re lifelong learners. Little ones come, but we also have the elderly coming to learn.”

“I think reading is the foundation of everything you do,” continued Reiste. “We focus on different literacies at the library - health literacy, recipe literacy, information literacy, social literacy, arts and humanities financial literacy. To do any of those, you need basic literacy as a start.”

After its founding in the 1930s, LPL moved to its current location from Main Street in Lititz Borough in 1999. LPL, which receives state and county government funding and funding from the municipalities it serves, employs 28 workers - three on a full-time basis and 25 part-timers - and benefits from the support of 50 dedicated volunteers.

“I think a lot of people think of us as a book depository, and we are that, but I see us as a community hub, a community meeting place,” Reiste said. “Everything we do is for our community, and we’re so grateful for our community. We really want and value feedback. We want to answer the calls we’re receiving. I want us to be a trusted entity.”
