When medical needs arise, Sheila Hershey answers the call
BY JEFF FALK
Let’s face it. If student-athletes are going to practice hard and play sports at a high level, they’re bound to get hurt. Injuries are a part of the game.
But when those inevitable injuries do occur, we want student-athletes to receive immediate attention from qualified health care professionals. We need certified athletic trainers like Sheila Hershey.
“We are health care professionals who work in collaboration with team physicians,” said Hershey, who’s been Warwick’s athletic trainer for 14 years. “During a normal school day, we are seeing athletes for rehabilitation and the treatment of injuries. Then, we are covering games and practices. Being on-site helps us to respond to an injury, if it occurs, quickly.”
Athletic trainers are not doctors. Perhaps the best way to characterize their level of expertise is to relate them to emergency medical technicians (EMTs) with a totally different set of skills and scope of training.
“Athletic trainers are there to take that question off our coaches,” said Hershey. “(Coaches) might not be able to ascertain if a student-athlete has a concussion or concussion symptoms. Coaches are there to coach. But if a medical emergency happens, we’re also there for that.”
Athletic injuries come in all different shapes, forms and severity levels. Sometimes, Hershey’s duties involve taping ankles, helping shaken-up competitors off the playing field or simply providing a bag of ice. But she’s also trained to administer CPR and to diagnose serious injuries like broken bones and concussions.
It’s important for student-athletes to know that someone like Hershey is always there just in case.
“(Injuries) are definitely inevitable,” said Hershey, a resident of Lititz. “We’re seeing more injuries and more overuse injuries. We’re promoting the importance of being multi-sport athletes. But you shouldn’t be over-training. It takes a toll on (student-athletes’) bodies. There’s definitely an element of resiliency, but some of our younger athletes are more at risk for some injuries because their bodies aren’t fully developed yet.”
There are hundreds of student-athletes in the Warwick School District competing in dozens of scholastic sports. Similarly, Hershey attends hundreds of interscholastic events and practices each school year.
“But we can’t be at two places

There are different topics, different subjects. It’s a different kind of learning. It’s a different kind of teaching.
At the Brownstown campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), students are encouraged to explore fields they are interested in. That type of empowerment broadens horizons.
“I can walk through our school,
and I can go from one world to another,” said Justin Bruhn, principal at LCCTC-Brownstown. “It’s really amazing what’s under our roof. I like to walk into programs and say, ‘What are you doing today?’ It’s just a great environment. There’s enthusiasm. There’s ambition. There are a lot of students finding their ways. Some are finding how they learn best.”

Art can change demeanors. Art can spark imaginations. Art can develop personalities.
Elizabeth Roberts is using art to inspire others, in very much the same way that it has inspired her.
Elizabeth is a 17-year-old junior at Warwick High School, an artist and a philanthropist. She is the founder of Inspiring Brushstrokes, a licensed local nonprofit that distributes art supplies to children in the Warwick School District between the ages of 3 and 13.
“I really hope that (children) will feel appreciated and seen,” said Elizabeth. “Art supplies are expensive, so they’re not usually a priority. I want

of three LCCTC campuses supported by 16 Lancaster County public school districts. The Brownstown building houses 20 classrooms and adjoining laboratory workspaces, one for each of the LCCTC programs offered there.
“In order to have a forward-moving world, it’s important to have educated citizens,” said Bruhn. “That’s what education does for students. It teaches them how to be learners. No matter what the profession, that’s going to be something that stays with them for the rest of their lives. If you’re going to last, you’re going to keep learning. The public education system
tries to reinforce that idea. Having curiosity and ambition is something we can encourage in our students. Every student has a different journey.”
The Brownstown campus offers 12 LCCTC full-day programs designed mostly for seniors: cabinetmaking and wood technology, architectural CAD/design, electrical construction technology, heavy equipment operations and basic maintenance (HVAC/R), painting and interior finishes, plumbing, computer network and security, power sport technology, commercial art, digital design/ print media, interactive media and web design, and photogra -
phy and multimedia communications. The school also offers six half-day programs designed mainly for juniors: introduction to construction, introduction to culinary arts, introduction to health careers, introduction to manufacturing, introduction to transportation, and introduction to viscom.
“We are very outcome- and goal-oriented,” said Bruhn. “We take pride in teaching our students very specific skills. They leave us knowing how to do things. The students are able to develop very real-world skills. I think that appeals to a lot of students. It’s different than what they get at traditional high schools. They’re skills that their peers couldn’t normally do.”
There are currently 475 students enrolled at LCCTC-Brownstown. They reside in all the communities of Lancaster County, and they hail from almost every local public school district, as well as some private schools.
“They’re like any other student out there,” Bruhn said. “We get the same variety as everyone. They all have different backgrounds and different abilities. They’ve latched on to and identified a career pathway, and they’re getting more intense training.”
“There’s a perception that all of our students are going to seek employment right after high school,” added Bruhn. “The reality is that they’re headed in a ton of different directions. It varies from program to program. Some students have jobs lined up. Some pursue postsecondary educations. Some of it depends on the students and what their ambitions are.”
The Brownstown campus of LCCTC employs about 60 individu -
als, 20 of whom work as program instructors.
“Our staff is incredible,” said Bruhn. “Our staff came directly from their industries. They were experts before they came to us as teachers.”
LCCTC was originally established in 1966 as Lancaster County Area Vocational-Technical School before changing to its current name in the late 1990s. The school built campuses in Brownstown, Mount Joy and Willow Street in the early 1970s.
“We (the three campuses) all have similar goals, and our students attend for similar reasons,” said Bruhn. “What differentiates Brownstown is our programs are unique and not duplicated at the other campuses. I think each campus takes its identity from the programs offered at each place.”

(the children) to feel like they can do anything. I want them to get a sense of what it’s like to be artistic and playful.”
“My favorite part is helping kids who were like me,” continued Elizabeth, noting that she experienced poverty as a child. “I want to make sure (other kids) don’t feel like I did. When I fill these boxes, it brings me to tears. It makes me so happy.”
Elizabeth’s plan for Inspiring Brushstrokes is to send out new or unused art supplies - paints, crayons, markers, canvases, coloring pages - to underprivileged local kids through the Lititz Warwick Community Chest’s food distribution system. She’s hoping to distribute enough boxes for 180 children four times a year, beginning in late April or early May.
“When people think of art, they think of canvases and painting,” said Elizabeth. “Art is all around us. Our clothing is a form of expression. You can dress how you feel. Art in society is a way of expression. Society can be tough on everyone.”
Elizabeth has already begun to execute the nonprofit’s mission by handing out basic art supplies at local events like education fairs, church functions and Stormers’ baseball games.
“We are delivering boxes of art
supplies to families with kids who live below the poverty line,” said Elizabeth. “A lot of them don’t have enough money, and their wants can be at the bottom of the priority list. It’s a way to take their lives into a creative way of thinking, a positive way of thinking. Those things can create joy. It’s so important to have a creative outlet. You need a sense of joy in your life.”
Inspiring Brushstrokes is overseen by an advisory board made up of family members and friends, and Elizabeth is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit, including packaging the art supplies in boxes, collaborating with Lititz Warwick Community Chest and collecting the art supplies through donation drives at schools and churches and through individual donations. Inspiring Brushstrokes is also considering applying for financial grants.
“I want people to understand that not everyone has access to things,” said Elizabeth. “We should be grateful to have a roof over our heads. A lot of people can go to the store and buy art supplies. But that’s not the case for everyone. We want to help people become as fortunate as we are.”
Before officially becoming a licensed nonprofit in March of this

at the same time,” said Hershey. “We hope our services aren’t required. There’s a chance we could be there, and our services aren’t required. A good athletic training day is a boring day.”
The nature of her profession requires Hershey to form a certain level of a personal relationship with student-athletes. But she is always diligent in approaching those relationships in a professional manner.
“We’re here to support (student-athletes). We get to build relationships,” said Hershey. “You present yourself professionally and as a caring individual and you’ve also got to project good boundaries. I always say, ‘Is it OK to touch you?’ I always ask. You’re not their buddy. You’re not their friend. But you are there to help them.”
Hershey graduated from Hempfield High School in 1999, and four years later she graduated from West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. From 2003 to 2005, Hershey was enrolled as a graduate assistant in the athletic training program at Millersville University; she came to Warwick in 2011.
“(Athletic training) has definitely changed over the years,” said Hershey. “I’m in this profession for 20 years, and
when I first started, there were no concussion protocols. There are more policies in place to protect our student-athletes. We also work more in different settings than the traditional settings.”
“People see athletic trainers on the sidelines of sports games,” she added.
“We are health care providers. We’re not a coach. We’re not another set of eyes on the sidelines. We want to be respected for that. We want people to know that their sons and daughters are in good hands.”

year, Elizabeth started solidifying ideas and raising funds for it in the summer of 2024. But the inspiration for Inspiring Brushstrokes can be traced to a childhood that was profoundly influenced by art.
“When I was younger, my parents split,” said Elizabeth. “My mom always made sure I had a creative outlet. I continued with art because she always inspired me to be creative. At one point I thought, ‘What if I used my experience
from pg 4
to help others?’ I know what a lot of people are going through.”
“I am an artist,” continued Elizabeth. “I’ve always loved art. When I got to high school, I became comfortable calling myself an artist. My favorite art is graphite drawings of still life. I also dabble in paintings and jewelry making.”
