Casting appreciation for veterans

When he was 8 years old, Case Baccio had an inspired idea. Then, he brought that idea to life, committed to it and followed through with it.

Now, six years later, Clear Water for Heroes is still going strong.

“I guess my motivation would be something between gratitude and joy,” said Case, an eighthgrade student at Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “My goal isn’t to raise a large amount of money. My goal is for everyone to have a blast, for everyone to have a great time. I think part of it is the impact that the first veterans’ event I went to had on me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget it. It’s the reason I started this thing. There are people doing things today because these (veterans) help keep us safe.”

With the assistance of family and friends, Case is staging this year’s Clear Water for Heroes fishing tournament on Saturday, May 3, at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane,

Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township. The fundraising event for veterans and veterans’ organizations will be conducted between 8 a.m. and noon, followed by a complimentary lunch.

Participants and supporters can preregister by emailing clear waterforheroes@gmail.com or by

“This is such a small thing, but it’s made an impact on a lot of people.”

searching for “6th Annual Clear Water for Heroes” at Eventbrite. com. Same-day registration for the event will begin at 7 a.m.

“I believe anybody can be a hero,” said Case. “The way I look at it, if you do something kind, I would classify you as a hero. It means giving something to benefit others.”

“We just want to say thank you,” said Ali Bucher, Case’s mom. “We’ve been around this veteran community, and we want to give

back to people who have done so much for this nation. This is such a small thing, but it’s made an impact on a lot of people.”

The Clear Water for Heroes fishing tournament will offer prizes to the top three adult finishers and top three kid finishers determined by the aggregate weight of the three biggest fish caught.

“My favorite part is seeing adults stepping in and helping kids fish,” said Case. “We had one veteran who was helping a group of four or five kids who never fished before. He was there the entire time helping kids, and when they caught one, their faces just lit up.”

“I also love the connections we’ve made,” he added. “We’ve become friends with a whole bunch of people.”

“It’s a family event,” said Bucher. “My favorite part is the people and seeing the smiles on faces. There are people who have followed Case from year one and have come to every event.”

More than 50 fishermen, outdoorsmen and former servicemen from veterans’ groups

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared.

“Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

At the heart of the matter, it’s children helping children. Bethany Christian Services (BCS) simply serves as the mediator, the facilitator.

Appropriately enough, the organization’s upcoming event is being called Walk in Love.

“Kids are the motivation for what we do,” said Elaine Shenk, who’s been BCS’ director of family strengthening and empowerment for five years.

“We want to protect children in our community. Everything

Several of the vendors have

we do at Bethany Christian Services revolves around children and family. We want families to come out, have fun and enjoy spending time together, being together as a family.”

Bethany Christian Services of Central Pennsylvania is conducting its inaugural Walk in Love, a children’s walk/run and family festival, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The event is designed to raise funds and awareness for families in central Pennsylvania dealing

participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.

“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”

Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.

The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.

The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.

Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.

At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.

“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”

According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.

“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”

And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry.

more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

Clear Water for Heroes

and VFWs from across Lancaster County are expected to participate. Case is hoping to raise more than $10,000 through Clear Water for Heroes, and the proceeds will go to benefit local and national veterans’ organizations.

Case has acquired event sponsorships from 15 local and national businesses.

“I try to put as much time and effort into this event as I do with sports,” said Case, who competes in football, wrestling and track and field at MTMS. “We’ve seen it change people’s lives for the better.

I’d say (the participants are) family. They’re making that commitment to get up early and help people who have made sacrifices that no one can imagine.”

It was a trip to Ohio for a Warrior Weekend to Remember that provided Case’s initial inspiration for Clear Water for Heroes. Over the first five years, Case’s event has raised more than $50,000 for veterans, their families and veterans’ causes.

“The amount of support we get is through the roof,” said Case. “We’ve crushed our financial goals the last few years. When I

from pg 1

first started, I was shy to go up to people, but the connections we’ve made have gone through the roof. Now I go up to people and say, ‘Thank you for your service,’ and we’ve seen veterans cry.”

“He is just a kind soul who wants to give back to people,” said Bucher of her son. “He is just an incredible human being. ... He does this because he cares. He’s motivated. It’s all him. He does it all. We need more human beings like him.”

Walk in Love

with poverty, homelessness and health issues.

In addition to the children’s 1-mile walk/run and a toddler toddle, Walk in Love will feature food trucks, carnival-style games, a vendors’ market and resource tables.

“We’re hoping it’s going to be very celebratory,” said Shenk.

“People are worth celebrating, and I get excited to see people lean on each other and cheering each other on. I’m picturing joy and lots of smiles. I think it’s going to be a fun celebration.”

Central Pennsylvania children and youths ages 5 to 18 are eligible to participate in the 1-mile walk/ run, and they are asked to obtain

financial sponsorships from family members and friends. A 1-mile course will be created around the parking lot of LBC’s Horst Athletic Center.

Prizes will be awarded by age categories.

To register for Walk in Love, go to www.bethany.org/centralpa/walk or call 717-598-9971. The deadline to register is Friday, May 2, but late registrations will be accepted.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people, seeing old friends and seeing it all come together,” said Shenk. “I just picture a mighty, wonderful moment of energy. We’re hoping to make it an annual event. We would love to continue to

grow this event as a hallmark event for Bethany Christian Services. We really want it to be a family-centered event.”

“(The idea for Walk in Love) came from a big brainstorming time,” Shenk continued. “That’s what we really want to do as Christians, walk in love, love our neighbors as ourselves and God. It just got a lot of support as we talked about it. People should always come first, and they should take care of each other. We say, ‘Who is my neighbor?’ We all belong to each other.”

Organizers of Walk in Love are hoping to raise $15,000. The funds will go toward sustainability of BCS

Handbell ensemble sets concert

Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 36 Church St., Rothsville, will host the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble in concert on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. as part of its 2024-25 Music at Jerusalem Concert Series.

Established in 2003, the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble consists of auditioned, advanced-level handbell ringers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Under the leadership of artistic director Ron Bellamy, a well-known local handbell choir director and solo ringer, the ensemble currently plays on six and one-half octaves of Schulmerich bells. Handchimes and a large number of percussion instruments are also used.

The group’s repertoire spans original compositions, transcrip -

tions of classical literature, and arrangements from a wide array of musical genres. The spring program - titled “The Storm Shall Pass!” - will include works such as Jason Krug’s “Resounding Fury,” Cathy Moklebust’s “Thundersnow,” and William Payn’s “Prisms.” The concert will also feature the world premiere of a soon-to-be-published original handbell composition by the group’s associate artistic director, Bob Gardner. A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking is available on the right side of the building, with elevator access through the double glass doors under the canopy. For more information, call the church office at 717-626-8972.

programs like Safe Families for Children.

“(Safe Families for Children is) an amazing ministry started in 2003 for children all over the United States and here in Lancaster, Dauphin and York counties,” said Shenk. “It’s not foster care. It’s not changing custody. It’s providing parents support until they get back on their feet. So many families are facing really tough things. It’s a ministry, and churches get host families together. It’s not really our staff doing it.”

Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich., BCS was established in Lancaster in 1984. Since then, BCS has opened additional central Pennsylvania branch offices in Harrisburg, York, State College, Reading and Mohnton.

BCS, which provides adoption, foster care, counseling services, pregnancy support and family

strengthening programs, employs 12 workers at its Lancaster office at 1681 Crown Ave., Suite 201, Lancaster. BCS is funded through government grants, private donors and fundraisers.

“Our mission is to extend the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth and strengthening families through quality social services,” said Shenk. “We’re very pro-people. We want to make a difference by walking through life with people.”
