The return of the annual PA Family Travel Fair will offer opportunities to see mascots, experience magic, and even meet a few Keystone State cowboys.
The last time Clair Leaman planned a “Messiah” Sing-along to be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, it was the spring of 2020. “We canceled that one,” said Leaman, who, along with others, organizes the Sing-along at Westminster, as well as a Christmas event in Chester County. The Chester County presentation was held again in December of 2021. “We didn’t know what to expect,” said Leaman. “We had a pretty good turnout, and I was amazed

The workshop will be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. Cruisin’ For Ukraine BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Like many people, Bob Rudy watched the events unfolding in Ukraine and wanted to help. “I wanted to fly over there and carry children and pets to safety,” he recalled saying to his wife, Debra, while watching the news one evening. “This obviously wasn’t a brilliant decision, so my wife suggested using the talents and resources I have right here at home to help out.” Inspired by his love for music and cars, Rudy organized Cruisin’ for Ukraine. The event will be held at Root’s Country Market and Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, on Saturday, April 23. Although Rudy had the idea, he knew he needed help to make it happen. “Putting a car show together isn’t something an individual can do,” he noted, adding that he recruited his fellow members of a local car club to
help. “I couldn’t possibly do it without my brothers and sisters in the Lancaster County Cruisers.” Registration for the show will be by donation and will take place at the event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and dash plaques will be given to the first 200 vehicles registered. More than 30 trophies will be awarded in the “Anything on Wheels” category, based on the highest amount of donations submitted, and all proceeds will be donated to the Mennonite Central Committee to help the people of Ukraine. The event is a family show, and children are encouraged to enter their own vehicles, including pedal cars or Power Wheels. Family pets will also be included in the festivities, with trophies for the three highest donations in both the kids’ and pet categories. The J.C. tion of trophies will take place at 2 p.m. Rudy acknowledged the support of Root’s Market for allowing the event to take place on-site and noted that a variety of the market’s vendors will be available during the show. Rudy encouraged participants to show their support for the Ukrainian people by displaying flags, signs and banners. An additional trophy will be awarded for the entry that shows the most support. Acknowledging the help he’s received in putting together a big event in a short amount of time, Rudy recalled evidence of divine intervention. He connected with someone on Facebook who was giving away tro-
phies, which Rudy plans to retrofit for this event. On his way to pick them up in Maryland, he passed a church. “It was so beautiful and at first, I thought it was a mosque,” he remembered. “Then I saw the sign. It was the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. That was another sign to me that I was doing the right thing in organizing the car show.” In the event of rain, the show will be postponed to Saturday, April 30, and information will be posted on the Cruisin’ for Ukraine Facebook page as well as on Rudy’s internet radio station at www.mypetradio.com. began in 1998. “We start with ‘Behold the Lamb of God,’” explained Leaman. At first, the concert was held at Neffsville Mennonite Church, but in the spring of 2000, it was moved to Westminster. New soloists for the event are soprano Sarah Shafer and bass Steven Condy. Returning soloists
are contralto Heidi Kurtz and tenor Timothy Bentch. Shafer has sung with the San Diego Opera and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Condy is on the roster of The Metropolitan Opera, as well as a number of national operas. Kurtz is a core member of the Philadelphia Singers and has performed solo with the
Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia. Bentch served as a missionary in Hungary, where he also sang at the Hungarian State Opera. Frank Dodd, who oversees music at Westminster, has joined the board of the organization as special adviser to the director. He will play the harpsichord in the

The sing-along is unique because area vocalists are invited to purchase or rent “Messiah” scores and then take part in the presentation. The event is also open to those who would just like to listen. The tradition has its roots in the founding of the Chester County Christian Chorale by Leaman in 1976. The Lancaster version of the sing-along, which only includes the second and third parts of Handel’s “Messiah,”

Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host an outdoor Family Easter Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, April 16. Participants may check in at the welcome table anytime between 9 and 11 a.m. to receive their checklist and instructions. Children and families will then walk the church grounds at their own pace in search of Easter eggshaped posters. Each poster will direct participants to do a different fun activity related to the Easter story. Each child will receive a goodie bag. Local Author Event Slated Local historian Darvin Martin will present portions from his book, “Family Record of Lester W. Martin and Hannah Elizabeth Fisher Martin,” on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. Admission is complimentary. The book spans the life of his grandparents, Lester W. and Hannah Fisher Martin, from when they were children in the 1920s and 1930s until they built a rancherstyle house in 1964 beside the ruins of an old church near Napierville. The book and presentation will include new never-before-published family background information on the earlier ancestors of the local Martin, Fisher, and Weaver/Weber families, including photographs of many of the 144 quilts Hannah E. Fisher Martin created during her lifetime. The author will be available to sign books after the presentation. Books will be available for purchase at the event. For more details, call 717-393-9745.

Honrade Earns Sports Honor Four student-athletes at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, were named conference Player of the Week for their performances for the week ending Feb. 27. Local students include Louise Honrade of Lititz. Honrade was named Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Player of the Week. Honrade dropped just five games total between singles and doubles to earn a pair of wins in the Dutchmen’s 5-4 loss at MAC Freedom power Wilkes University. The junior teamed with Jacquelyn McBride to win their No. 1 doubles match 8-2 and then swept her No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Zoe Klein. Honrade is a graduate of Manheim Township High School. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in exercise science at LVC.
