Lancaster County has enjoyed a rich history of health, spirit and comfort. That prosperity is deliberate, nurtured and purposeful. It’s the type of prosperity that also helps form a community from a county.

As the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) continues the yearlong celebration of its platinum anniversary, it has now turned its attention to well-being and vibrancy. That universal concept of prosperity will provide the focus for

Rothsville is like many small villages across Lancaster County in that it features its own unique history. Sharyn Deater has her own history with Rothsville, a personal history.

Deater is Rothsville’s unofficial town historian, an accidental local expert, if you will. Not because she remembers everything, but because she has much to remember.

“I have my own history here in Rothsville,” said Deater. “I raised one child here. I lived here in this house with my husband for 54 years. I’ve lived here so long. I like

the land.”

After occupying two other residences in town, in 1970 Deater and her husband, Raymond Wolf Deater, moved into her current home, one of the oldest houses in Rothsville. Ray passed just last year.

Rothsville was founded in 1790 by Philip Roth, builder of the White Swan Tavern. The town was formerly known as Rabbit Hill for the abundance of bunnies in the locale.

Time has its own way of turning dreams into memories.

“I do care about the history of Rothsville,” said Deater. “It just enthuses me. I like the idea of

knowing it’s where I live. I just got involved in looking at the history of Rothsville. I wanted to know.”

“I’m not up on it like I used to be,” she continued. “There are some things I don’t remember anymore. Time has sure gone by. It goes so fast.”

Officially, Rothsville is a census-designated place and an unincorporated community located in Warwick Township 3 miles from Lititz. The total area of Rothsville is 2.5 square miles.

The 2000 census showed that 3,017 people resided in Rothsville.

“History has always been important to me,” said Deater. “I

Magic is mysterious. Magic is entertaining. Magic is illusion. But do you know what else magic is? It’s a great way to raise funds.

The upcoming Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale is truly a magical event. It’s the brainchild of organizer Tait Harbaugh - known in the magic realm as Papa Tater - and it

serves as a creative way to raise monies for the nonprofit Steps to Success, which his wife, Michelle, operates.

“Magic is creating wonder, amazement,” said Harbaugh. “What you do beyond that is who you are as an entertainer. If it makes someone’s eyes grow wide, you’ve done your job. When you make people forget about life for a moment, that’s magic. I have tricks to create amazement

didn’t do well in it in school, but I liked it. We can learn from history. There’s a lot to learn from history.”

Rothsville’s western boundary is located just on the other side of the “Y” that connects Route 772 and Newport Road, while the Cocalico Creek serves as its eastern boundary. Rothsville grew up around the 2.5-mile stretch of road once known as Rabbit Hill Road that still connects travelers from Lititz to Brownstown and Route 222 and back.

“Most of the houses are concentrated on Newport Road and Route 772,” said Deater. “It was mostly townspeople and people from Lancaster and the local vicinities. The lay of the land is pretty much the same as it was way back.”

Gone now are the post office, the general store, the butcher shop, Rothsville High School, small industry, Reading railroad passenger service, the popular sulky racetrack and Deater Cigar Factory. What remains are a mini market, the Rothsville Fire Company, a rail-to-trail, farms, churches and a couple of restaurants, including the White Swan.

Raymond Deater’s great-grandparents founded and operated the Deater Cigar Factory.

“Rothsville was known for cigars,” said Deater.

Rothsville is one of 94 unincorporated communities or census-designated places in Lancaster County.

“Stagecoaches used to go up the muddy road (Newport) and they’d get stuck,” she continued. “They’d have to get out and push the buggies up the hill.”

“It’s just another town in Lancaster County,” said Deater. “There are a lot of nice towns in Lancaster County. They’re all over the place. There are an awful lot of little towns like Rothsville. The towns grew and grew and grew, and they have history to them.”

Feet Feat: Eve Kirchner is driving to Hawaii

Heels, sneakers, dress shoes, boots, flats. All kinds of footwear.

Eve Kirchner likes shoes just as much as the next young person. But recently the Manheim Township resident developed a new and deeper appreciation for them.

Industrious Eve is waging her own personal shoe drive. It’s a mission whose nature is altruistic on a couple of different levels.

3 ways to schedule your donation appointment:

• go to 717GiveBlood.org

• call 1-800-771-0059

“This involves a lot of work, and she’s learning responsibility in general,” said Antonella Kirchner, Eve’s mom. “When we heard about helping people around the world needing shoes, it struck at both of our hearts. That’s a big part of it. But it also involves a lot of organization. It’s almost like she’s had to learn how to run a small business. If we don’t keep up with it, it can be overwhelming.”

A homeschooled seventh-grader, Eve is collecting gently used shoes as part of a project that will raise money for a Girl Scout trip to Hawaii, where she and other members of Troop 70674 - which meets at Grandview Church, 888 Pleasure Road, Lancaster -

will perform more service projects. Eve’s collected shoes will go to Funds2Orgs, an international organization that supports small businesses by providing gently used shoes to sell.

“If I do this, I get to go to Hawaii, and that’s definitely a pro,” said Eve. “But we need people’s help to spread the word, just getting people to know about it. We need help to be able to reach our goal. We need the community to be part of our mission.”

Eve is employing a few different methods to collect the shoes.

In addition to using social media, she has placed empty bags on local residents’ doors and has set up drop-off boxes at four locations: Grandview Church; Popovsky Performing Arts Studio, 245 Butler Ave., Lancaster; Griddle & Grind Café, 20 W. Main St., Ephrata; and McKonly’s Garage, 3651 Horizon Drive, Mountville.

“A lot of people love shoes to match outfits,” said Antonella. “It’s estimated that 70% of the world depends on second-hand shoes and nearly 300 million people don’t even own shoes. We think that’s astounding. A simple pair of shoes protects feet.

People need to walk places. It’s more than fashion; they’re used for practical purposes.”

Eve needs to collect 100 bags or a total of 2,500 pairs of shoes to make it to Hawaii. Since beginning the shoe drive on Feb. 26, she’s collected a lot of shoes, but she still has a long way to go before it ends on Friday, April 26.

“We’re tracking really close. We are tracking where we need to be,” said Antonella. “We need about 10 bags a week. If we can get (the message) in front of enough people, it’s attainable. We do have the

support of the other troop members.”

Eve joined Troop 70674 when she was 5 years of age, and she’s already been a Girl Scout for seven years.

“It’s nice to see what running a business would be like,” said Eve. “You have to work to get what you need. You have to organize stuff and work with other people. It’s just fun getting together with girls who are willing to care for other people.”

To donate shoes, email girlscoutshoedrive@gmail. com or send a direct message to girl_scout_shoe_ drive on Instagram.

Food bank, breakfast slated

Peter’s Porch offers a free community breakfast and food bank at Lititz Mennonite Church, 165 Front St., Lititz, on the second Saturday of each month from 8 to 10 a.m. Even though renovations are continuing at the church, this month’s

event will be offered on Saturday, April 13. The food bank and breakfast is staffed by volunteers from several Lititz churches.

The free breakfast is available to all and will feature homemade pancakes, eggs, baked oatmeal

and more. The food bank offers groceries to attendees without proof of need. A free children’s clothing closet is also available.

For more information or to volunteer, contact the church at 717-626-8237 or lmcadmin@lititzmc.org.

LCCF’s next celebratory event.

“Lancaster County is a vibrant place to live, work and play,” said Val Schade, LCCF’s communications manager. “That’s why we want to make it more vibrant. We want it to continue to be vibrant for everyone who lives here. From a community perspective, it’s providing access for all people, whether it’s physical, financial or mental resources, to make that possible. It’s about investing in programs that are working in the community. Well-being and vibrancy are multifaceted.”

Touted as an afternoon of health and wellness activities, Cultivating Well-Being and Vibrancy will be presented as an outdoor tent event on Saturday, April 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Buchanan Park, 901 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster. The event is free, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

“We’re celebrating as an entire community,” said

Schade. “The question becomes, ‘What can happen in a community when we promote well-being and vibrancy?’ If we want our community to reach its full potential, we have to invest in it.”

Included in the afternoon’s activities will be presentations on writing from the heart, financial well-being, positive aging, health resources, collaborative art, nourishment and replenishment, core and gentle movement, alternative health and the sharing of voices with WITF. Keynote speaker Janine James, vice president of Work Wisdom, will deliver an address in the middle of the festivities.

The recipients of LCCF’s next round of Shaping Tomorrow awards will also be announced.

“We’re hoping for a big crowd,” said Schade. “It’s community-led, and folks can choose their own adventure. People will be there checking it out. You can engage in what you

want to engage in. We’re making these events so they’re open to everyone.”

Cultivating Well-Being and Vibrancy is the second in a series of four LCCF-sponsored events celebrating the nonprofit’s 100th year of stewardship in conjunction with the county’s endowment. The first, Celebrating Creative Expression, was held on March 27 at Rock Lititz.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St., Lancaster, LCCF will present Elevating the Next Generation, an event centered on youth and looking ahead. Then, at the Farm at Eagles Ridge, 465 Long Lane, Lancaster, on Thursday, Oct. 17, LCCF will conclude the series with Protecting Our Planet, an evening of nurturing and celebrating nature.

“The community foundation exists because in 1924, visionaries in Lancaster County were thinking about all of us,” said Tracy Cutler, LCCF’s executive vice pres -

Young musicians to present recital

A spring recital will be presented by members of the Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA), a local organization of young classically trained musicians. The event will take place on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, located on the property of Homestead Village.

WYPA is a student organization sponsored by the Musical Art Soci -

ety that meets once each month, giving students performance experience in preparation for recitals, competitions, auditions, and other music opportunities. The group presents public programs in April, December, and June. The counselors are Margaret Marsch, Dora Zlatkin, John Zielinski, Chris Prestia, and Sean Skinner. This year’s junior counselor is Candace Mbugua. On April 14, members

will present piano, violin, flute, and vocal works, including piano concertos by Beethoven and Shostakovich. Other selections will include a Beethoven sonata, a flute concerto by Devienne, a Puccini opera piece, a fiddle piece, and Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz” on the piano.

The concert is free and open to the public, and the venue is handicapped-accessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.

Church sets meal, program about recycling

Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., will host a community meal on Wednesday, April 17. The meal will be served at 6 p.m., and Brian Snader from the Mennonite Central Committee’s Material Resources Center in Ephrata will speak at 7 p.m. The program will be about Earth Day and recycling. It will focus

specifically on items that are not accepted in curbside, residential recycling programs but are still recyclable. Attendees may bring the following items to the event for recycling: newspapers, office paper, magazines, and clean, flattened cardboard and paperboard, including cereal box-type. Waxcoated boxes such as juice or ice cream cartons are

not accepted. Attendees should sort their items before the event or be prepared to separate them when they arrive. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted. No reservations are needed. The meal and program will be held in the Family Life Center, and attendees should use the entrance at the back of the church.

ident. “As a community, we have an opportunity to spark ideas and to consider commitments we can make and action we can take today to set Lancaster on a path for future generations and the next 100 years.”

“At Lancaster County Community Foundation, we care for the county’s endowment,” said Schade. “We are inviting folks to be a part of that. Everybody is invited to help shape the future of Lancaster County. We get together with folks from the county and form partnerships that create opportunities to help shape a better future for all of us.”

Kids Fishing Derby will encourage outdoor fun

Fishing offers an opportunity for people to learn more about nature, try their luck and have fun.

That’s the goal of the annual Kids Fishing Derby, hosted by the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). The event will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, from 8 to 11 a.m. All youths age 11 and under as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license are invited to participate.

“The Fishing Derby is important to the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association because it gives local kids an opportunity

to catch trout in an area that has been stocked with fish specifically for them,” said Scot Harlacher, DFCA volunteer, who added that more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout will be available to catch. “Our hope is also that this event will create a bonding experience for kids with their family and friends. Fishing can also give children a reason to learn specific skills then have a chance for success by putting those skills into action.”

He’s hoping programs like the Fishing Derby encourage participants to pursue the pastime. “Many kids will enjoy learning about nature then wish to continue in outdoor activities as they get older,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to teach and model the

ideals of conservation and stewardship so that those values can be continued in the future.”

In addition to the Fishing Derby, Donegal Presbyterian Church will host a pancake breakfast that is open to the general public. The breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. Proceeds will benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York.

“We have been running this (mission) project for about 25 years and expect to take about a dozen volunteers this year to work on several handicapped ramps for multiple families,” said Harlacher, who is also a member of the church. “We truly appreciate any donations for this effort because the funds help us with building materials, gas,

food, etc., and allow us to have an immediate positive impact on the lives of a few needy families.”

The DFCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the DFCA has raised more than 3,000 trout annually since 1964 for stocking in the Donegal Creek.

“I encourage families to bring their kids to the Fishing Derby because they will have a reasonable chance to catch some trout,” Harlacher commented. “Even if you don’t intend to fish, it’s a great opportunity to be outside and watch how excited and happy the participants will be.¬†We do hold the event rain or shine, so please be prepared

Bricker Village to host Young Makers Market

Bricker Village, in collaboration with Roots to Wings Studio & Designs, will present the second Young Makers Market, which will offer a platform for children under age 16 in the community to showcase their talents and interests.

The first market, held last autumn, showcased the talents of 10 young crafters, budding entrepreneurs and musicians, allowing them to display their handmade creations, enhance their customer service abilities and gain valuable business knowledge.

Thanks to popular demand, the event is back with nine junior makers already on board. The event will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bricker Village courtyard, 2 E. 29th Division Highway, Lititz. The venue is situated at the junction of routes 501 and

322, just behind the Brickerville House Restaurant. The event will be held rain or shine.

Spaces are limited. For more information or to register, visit www.bricker village.com/young-mak ers. Those with questions may email Brickerville Marketing@gmail.com or call 717-626-0377.

for the weather and cold temperatures.”

All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help fishermen, but all fishing will stop at 11 a.m. All participants must register

with no street parking.

designed to raise awareness of its work with people with disabilities and individuals who are aging. But at the heart of it, the gala is a celebration of life.

Sure, UDS’ upcoming gala is a fundraiser

“Can you imagine being up in the morning and not being able to get out of bed?” said Larry Aubrey, UDS’ director of development. “Our caregivers help with those basic needs. That’s what UDS is all about. Our clients just want to be regular, normal people like everybody else. We help them lead the best lives they can.”

The 15th edition of UDS’ annual gala will be presented on Friday, April 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. It will be a night filled with refreshments,

“When I hear gala,’ I think of a party,” said Aubrey. “It’s a special occasion. It’s set aside for a special purpose. It’s really people wanting to have a fun time. (The UDS event is) not a black-tie gala. It’s about raising funds and raising awareness. We try to show the folks in attendance how their donations will be used to impact our clients.”

About 300 clients, family members, sponsors, community members and UDS advocates and supporters are expected to attend the gala. UDS is hoping to raise $60,000, a sum that will be directly applied to in-home living personal care, one of 14 programs that UDS operates.

“People are always going to need the services we provide,” said Aubrey. “People with disabilities and people who are aging in their homes are always going to need these services.”

The gala is one of three major fundraisers that UDS conducts annually. UDS’ holiday gift wrapping station at Park City Mall involves 250 volunteers and raises about $50,000, and its annual golf outing at Crossgates Golf Club in August brings in nearly $30,000.

“We get a tremendous amount of our program funding from the state, but it doesn’t cover all the costs,” said Aubrey. “The rest has to come from fundraisers. We want our

programs to be as impactful as they can be. Not only is it for our clients, (but) it’s also for our caregivers. We want to make sure the people who are providing these services are making a living wage.”

The origin of UDS can be traced to 1965 when a local girl in a wheelchair named Anna was unable to attend a showing of “Mary Poppins” because of her disability. Last year, 350 UDS employees provided quality-of-life-improving services to more than 6,000 individuals.

“There are a lot of folks out there who continue to need our help,” said Aubrey. “UDS is changing lives every day for people with disabilities and for people who are aging. We feel very blessed that we’re able to provide these services to our friends and neighbors, and we can be depended upon. We’re here to help people lead full lives.”

and wonder. But for me personally, I want to make people laugh.”

The 10th edition of the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale, billed as a micro magic convention, will be presented on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. About 40 magicians from Lancaster County and beyond will be there plying their trade, selling and trading their wares and captivating curious onlookers.

The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Concessions will be available, and all proceeds from their sale will benefit Steps to Success, which has served the community for 30 years through early child care and education.

“I want people to come out and have a good time and explore magic,” said Harbaugh. “The goal is to support Steps to Success. Michelle saw this need in the community and put together four after-school programs in Conestoga Valley. Steps has grown immensely since COVID, and every time (it has), it’s been to help someone out. She tries to look out for the community. I really care about Steps, and I really care about the magic community.”

could do for the kids.’ The little lovelies loved it so much that I brought more. I realized I love making people laugh. That’s when I got serious about magic.”

Those who attend the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale can expect to be treated to card tricks, puppets, clowns, face painting, vintage and rare magic, sleight of hand, the unexplained, and maybe even a bed of nails.

Steps to Success is hoping to raise $700 through the event. In addition to the concessions, the nonprofit will accept direct donations and participating magicians donate a nominal fee to operate their table stations.

Last year, 200 magic enthusiasts attended.

“I’m a very late bloomer, and I was in my 30s when I started getting into magic,” said Harbaugh. “At one point Michelle said, ‘Hey, that’s something you

“It’s a room full of magic. It’s a room full of magicians,” said Harbaugh. “There’s definitely excitement in the air. If you ask the magicians to see a trick, they’re off. They love to perform. We really like seeing young people have an interest. Magic is so much more than a trick. It’s theater. It’s public presentation.”

For Harbaugh, magic has sort of become an accelerant for his journey’s second act.

“I’m a comedy magician,” said Harbaugh. “I’m trying to get into comedy. I’m trying stand-up. All of my shows end up being comedy shows. I just love laughter.”

At open house, Aviation Venture Crew will spread its wings

Maybe it was a way to conquer a new frontier. Maybe it was the desire to defy gravity. Maybe it was a response to a need for faster transportation.

But humans have always maintained a certain healthy fascination with flight. Not only is the Aviation Venture Crew continuing to explore aspects of flight, but it’s also seeking to promote them.

“It’s like a freedom thing,” said Doug Eadline, a co-adviser of the Aviation Venture Crew, as well as a licensed pilot and a ground maintenance supervisor at Chester County Airport. “When you’re up in the air, you feel like you can do

anything and go anywhere.” In an attempt to further its cause and attract new members, the Aviation Venture Crew will conduct an open house and drop-in on Saturday, April 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Smoketown Airport, 311 Airport Drive, Smoketown. The event will serve as an opportunity to meet current members, hear about some of the activities that the Aviation Venture Crew engages in, and generally learn what the crew is all about.

There will be an airplane to explore, as well as a flight simulator.

The open house is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

Fairmount posts sandwich fundraiser

A ham and cheese sandwich fundraiser, held jointly with the local Youth for Truth group, is underway at Fairmount, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata. To place an order by Friday, April 12, call 717-354-1800 or stop by the front desk at Fairmount.

The sandwiches may be picked up on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. just inside the front door of the Wheat Ridge building. Payment is due at pickup. Proceeds will go to the Fairmount Sharing Fund to aid Fairmount residents in financial need. Directions may be found at www.fairmount homes.org.

“The atmosphere should be pretty light,” said Eadline. “We’re trying to attract new youth to the organization. We’re kind of unique to Lancaster County. A Venture Crew that’s specifically focused on aviation is pretty rare. We’re the only one in the county.”

Chartered by New Holland American Legion Post 662, the Aviation Venture Crew meets every other Sunday in Smoketown Airport’s community room.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 6 p.m.

“We take a wide view of aviation, including planes and flight,” said co-adviser Beth Katz. “But we also consider airport operations, weather, astronomy, navigation and trip planning. We have visited the Air and Space Museum at

Dulles Airport, but we have also visited Coatesville Airport and Lancaster Airport to see their operations and some of the planes housed there.”

The Aviation Venture Crew was founded in 2012 and currently has five members, who are males and females ages 14 to 21 from Manheim, Lancaster

city and Leola. More are always welcome.

“Most come from a Scouting background,” said Eadline, a New Holland resident. “We explore anything and everything related to aviation. For most of our members, it’s probably a hobby, but it could blossom into a career. If these kids are intent on going beyond

Venture Crew, they can learn to fly.”

“When I started (flying), it was the excitement of being free. Now it’s a job. To me, it’s still neat to see the (planes) taking off,” said Eadline.

For additional information about Aviation Venture Crew, go to www .facebook.com/watch/ AviationVentureCrew52.
