The GateHouse Lititz judges lightly. And when it does, the GateHouse Lititz judges people on who they are, not what they do or have done.
The GateHouse Lititz doesn’t give up on people; it doesn’t throw away souls.
“There is hope. We provide hope,” said Anthony Valentin, who’s been the program director at The GateHouse Lititz for four years.
“There are people out there who are willing to fight this battle and help. We want individuals to know it’s possible. We’re willing to walk alongside you. This is not meant to be done alone. It comes down to one person helping another.”
The GateHouse Lititz gives people second chances.

The Lancaster Chapter, National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), which aims to preserve history and railroad artifacts, as well as educate the public about railroading and its history, is in the middle of celebrating its 90th anniversary.
According to a history of the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, provided by chapter historian Linda Himpsl, it began in 1934 when a few young railroad and trolley enthusiasts met in an old trolley in Neffsville, forming the Lancaster Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. In 1935, the group merged with the Interstate Trolley Club and other organizations to form the NRHS. The Lancaster Chapter was the first charter organized in the NRHS, launching on Oct. 13, 1935.

Employment is not just about a paycheck. Jobs can affect our self-worth, our relationships and our confidence.
Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit (IU) 13 is in the education business, and at least two of its programs are specifically designed to prepare young people for the workforce.
“For these students, work is
especially important,” said Gina Guatta, who’s been the supervisor of IU13’s Lancaster secondary transition programs for 12 years.
“For some, they’ve been told they can’t work. They feel proud when they make a contribution. Part of it is growing up, going to school, going to work and taking the next step.”

Today, chapter meetings are held in the 1882 freight station in Christiana, which was restored by the chapter in 1998. Members, who come from various backgrounds, all share a love of railroading. “Most people have an interest in railroads, history or just trains in general. Very few of us actually worked for the railroad,” noted Steve Himpsl, second director. “Some have model trains. They are avid collectors.”
“Some have fathers or grandfathers who worked the railroad,” added Linda.

immersion programs and three school-to-work programs, all secondary transition programs created to teach specific work skills and soft skills and prepare students for life. The programs are designed for students with intellectual and learning disabilities.
“We do a lot of modeling,” said Guatta. “Work ethic is difficult to teach. But you can set expectations high and help (students) reach those expectations. For the most part, we’re getting them there.”
Both secondary transition programs require the entire school year to complete.
Participants in the work immersion programs spend part of their school days performing work assignments at business partners and the other part of their school days reviewing performances, correcting mistakes and learning curriculum in classroom settings. Among the participating businesses are Moravian Manor Communities in Lititz, Masonic Village retirement community in Elizabethtown, Willow Valley Communities in Willow Valley, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and Lancaster General Health in the city.
One of the missions of the school-to-work programs, which emphasize community-based training in real-world settings, is to prepare students for the work immersion programs. Some of the instruction performed in the introductory programs are performed at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster and at IU13’s Burle Business Park location.
“The work immersion programs are for students in their final years of school,
and the goal is to get them employed,” said Guatta, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We want these students to increase their skills to attain and maintain employment. We want them to be competitively employed. We want them to build confidence and experience.”
Currently, there are more than 80 students with disabilities enrolled in IU13’s work immersion and school-to-work programs.
The Lancaster secondary transition students are typically between 17 and 21 and reside in all 16 Lancaster County public school districts served by IU13.
Students are referred by their home school districts and then go through application and interview processes to gain entry into the programs.
“Some are students who fall through the cracks, and some are students who a typical high school setting isn’t going to help,” said Guatta. “They want to work. They want to make their ways in life. We want them to be successful. They want to be successful. Sometimes it’s hard for students with special needs to fit in. Maybe they didn’t have a dream, but they move forward when they see they can do something.”
Depending upon individual circumstances, secondary transition students receive instruction and guidance from IU13 job trainers and mentors from participating business partners. Students learn time management, problem-solving skills, teambuilding, enhanced communications, goal setting, independence, social skills, résumé preparation and customer relation skills.

Success breeds success.
“I see (students) come to us as new interns and leave as graduates,” said Guatta. “I see how they’ve grown, and it’s internal growth. It’s a very different student than the one you’ve seen from the beginning. I feel fortunate that I get to be a part of their journeys.”
One of 29 intermediate units formed across the state in the 1970s, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 serves as a bridge between local school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and provides educational services, business services, technology support and professional development. Across all of its job training programs, IU13 works with over 700 business partners.
“We talk about work
worth doing,” said Guatta. “This is work worth doing at its core. This is helping students become productive adults. We talk about trust and unity at IU13. We work together and build a team. I definitely see my programs as being at the core for what we do for society.”

Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, will serve a community meal on Wednesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. in the Family Life Center, accessed through the rear of the church.

She will provide an overview of OEP’s work, including prevention of gun violence, Kingian Nonviolence training, immigrant justice, and developing children’s peace resources. Eowyn Bailey of Lititz was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2025 semester at College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must pass four or more letter-graded courses with no failing grades during the semester and earn a GPA of 3.5 or greater.
The new tower, funded in part through the Pennsylvania Broadband Infrastructure Program, expands broadband availability to more than 31,000 residents and businesses across the region. Communities where service is now available include Manheim, Lititz, Myerstown, Schaefferstown, East Petersburg, Mount Joy, Ephrata, Cleona, Lebanon and other surrounding communities. In many of these communities, residents previously had limited high-speed internet options.
To celebrate the milestone, Upward Broadband hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 11 at the Schaefferstown Volunteer Fire Company, where community leaders and local officials gathered to recognize the impact expanded broadband access will have on the region.
Speakers at the event
The expansion represents another step forward in strengthening Pennsylvania’s digital infrastructure and closing connectivity gaps in rural and underserved communities.
The project was financed in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, administered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority. Residents and businesses can check availability in their area by visiting www .UpwardBroadband.com.

the milestone during a chapter meeting at the freight station where they enjoyed cake and ice cream and a display of memorabilia dating from 1934 to the present.
There was also a chapter banquet held at Hershey Farm Resort in November. Tony White, NRHS president, presented the Lancaster Chapter a Certificate of Recognition for its 90th anniversary and for being the first charter chapter of the organization. In addition to Steve and Linda, accepting the certificate were Tom Shenk, president; Glenn Kendig, first vice president; Cindy Kendig, first director; Richard Ruttledge, treasurer; David Stambaugh, second vice president; and member Gayle Stambaugh.
One of the chapter’s major accomplishments was the restoration of the freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Notably, the station was featured in the 1985 movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.
According to Linda, the two-story building was moved east 40 feet to its present location in 1903 to install additional track. Passenger service ceased in 1907, when the new Christiana passenger station on the opposite side of the tracks was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; it terminated
service in 1952. Amtrak now leases the 1888 freight station building, gang house, 1907 passenger station and trackside property to the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS. The chapter also maintains a Conrail caboose on-site.
In addition to a holiday open house held during Christmas in Christiana, the stations is open for tours by appointment.
“We have a deck and we often have people come and hang out on the deck and watch the trains,” Steve said. “We want to get people into the station and to view the caboose.”
The Lancaster Chapter, NRHS members have restored, preserved and donated many train- and rail-related projects to Lancaster County and surrounding communities through the years, including a trolley from Lancaster, a Reading Railroad Company crossing watchman’s box and various railroad cars. The chapter has also organized Amtrak rail trips to many places, including Horseshoe Curve; western Pennsylvania; and Mystic Seaport, Conn. “Amtrak would add passenger cars on their trains to accommodate how many tickets were sold,” Steve explained. “We would sell 18-car trains.”
The group generally meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings

usually feature a guest speaker or a slideshow of railroad history. Outings are also planned. “We (might meet) at Strasburg Rail Road and ride the train, and when it comes back we have our meeting on the train. We mix it up,” noted Linda.
Members pay a yearly fee, which gets them the Lancaster Dispatcher, the chapter’s monthly newsletter. New members are welcome. “Many young people are not interested in railroading anymore because they did not grow up with it,” noted Steve. “We are more than happy to have young people come in and join us.”
Additionally, the first floor of the freight station is available for rent and can accommodate 60 to 80 people. If interested, email cindykendig@gmail .com.

More information about the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, including upcoming meetings, is available at www.nrhs1.org or www .facebook.com/Christiana FreightStation. For more information or to schedule a tour of the freight station, contact Steve at shimpsl@aol.com.
The borough of Lititz and the city of Freeport, Ill., have entered into a Pretzel Sister City partnership. This unique collaboration celebrates shared heritage as well as opens new doors for educational, cultural and tourism exchange.
Tim Connors from Freeport, Ill., who first fostered the idea of a Pretzel Sister City partnership, will be the guest of honor in Lititz on Wednesday, April 15. After a private luncheon and guided walking tour of Main Street in Lititz, Connors will arrive at Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery at 2 p.m. to par -
ticipate in a special key exchange between the two sister cities.
Adopted by the Freeport City Council on Dec. 1 and Lititz Borough Council on Dec. 23, the resolution designates Freeport as an official Sister City, recognizing the mutual interests and cultural ties that connect these two communities. This initiative is rooted in a shared German-American legacy, as well as a deep appreciation for the pretzel - a symbol of craftsmanship and tradition that each city embraces.
Lititz is home to the first commercial pretzel bakery in America, while Freeport
is affectionately known as “Pretzel City U.S.A” in both reputation and via its high school mascot. Each community boasts vibrant Main Street programs, historic architecture and a commitment to fostering local pride and economic vitality.
The sister city idea originated from Connors after he discovered pretzel memorabilia that designated Lititz as the “home of the pretzel.”

The GateHouse Lititz, which is located at 649 E. Main St., Lititz, is an accredited residential recovery facility - a type of halfway house - which is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. The local nonprofit takes a holistic approach to addiction and recovery.
“Our mission is to help individuals transform their lives that have been centered around drug and alcohol addiction,” said Valentin. “We encourage them to be part of the community. We encourage them to volunteer. We want to show them it’s about community and what it’s like to give back.”
The GateHouse Lititz’s live-in 90-day recovery program includes one-on-one therapy sessions, group therapy, employment support services, life-skills training, accountability, chores, routine development, mental health awareness and mentorship
programs. Some clients complete the recovery program, while others don’t, but everyone benefits in one way or another.
“It’s teaching them to live life on life’s terms,” said Valentin, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “Some of our individuals come to us defeated. But we tell them (addiction) doesn’t have to define you; it doesn’t have to affect your future. Sometimes individuals have blinders on and they can’t see the bigger picture. That’s when we step in. We also get them set up with (Pennsylvania) CareerLink.”
The GateHouse Lititz serves about 150 men each year. Currently, the residential recovery house is hosting 25 individuals, 19 of whom are employed throughout Lancaster County.
The GateHouse Lititz’s residential extended care is designed for males between the ages of 18 and 60. All of the individuals are from Pennsylvania - a handful from Lancaster County and from as far away as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Erie.
“These individuals have struggled with addiction in their lives,” said Valentin. “Some have had traumatic

experiences. Some are trying to put their pasts behind them. Some are looking for encouragement. I look at individuals like if they were my child, are they being guided the way I’d like my child to be guided? They’re human beings.”
“Everyone has a story; everyone has a past,” continued Valentin. “There’s a lot more to them than what we’re seeing on the outside. The question is: ‘Why are they struggling? What is holding them back?’ I have met some really good people who have struggled with addictions.”
The GateHouse Lititz employs 15 staff members, 12 of whom work full time.
The GateHouse is funded primarily through Medicaid, but it does participate in fundraising and grant programs.
“An individual has got to want it,” said Valentin. “We will engage them in different modulates of recovery. Hopefully, they will put their best foot forward. But at the end of the day, they’ve got to do it. You can’t do it for them. Kind of like, ‘You can live a better way of life and here are some examples.’ We hope they choose a productive way of life. All we can
do is provide the information and know-how.”
“When you’re in addiction, it becomes natural, it becomes normal,” he added. “It’s a choice, and that’s what makes it hard. Relapse is part of addiction. You’re fighting a battle. We try to look for the good in people.”
Established in Lititz in 1972, the GateHouse now also offers similar long-term residential recovery programs for men in Mountville and for women in Marietta. The GateHouse also operates eight transitional houses throughout Lancaster County and offers outpatient services in the city.
“Data shows that the longer individuals are involved with treatment, the better chance they have of recovery,” said Valentin. “We want to establish a foundation for recovery. As they’re hitting these benchmarks, the insurance company will say they’re no longer at great risk, so they can step into outpatient services. Some individuals may not be from this community, but they want to stay here for employment.”

St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, is preparing for its spring bazaar, also known as the Spring Thing, which will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 2, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors may start setting up at 6 a.m.
Organizers are seeking vendors who would like to
sell crafts or garage sale items. There is a fee to rent a space measuring 10 by 15 feet. Vendors must provide their own tables, chairs and tents.
Peters’ BBQ will be present to sell meals, and St. Luke’s will sell breakfast sandwiches, coffee, hot dogs, and baked goods.
Vendor reservations are due by Monday, April 27.
To receive a reservation form, call the church office at 717-626-7100 on Mondays through Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Spring Bazaar will also include basket giveaway drawings, hayrides, and music by Clyde Spangler. Heirloom tomato plants will be available for purchase, and haircuts will be offered for a donation.

The Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank (CPBB) will hold a community blood drive at Fairmount on Thursday, April 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the community room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata.
Those who wish to donate may schedule an
appointment by calling 800-771-0059 or visiting www.717giveblood.org and clicking “Donate Now.” Walk-ins are welcome, but those with scheduled appointments will be given priority. Donors should bring a photo ID. All donors will receive various gift certificates and a movie theater pass.
