HDistrict title bodes well for future of Brody Reber’s swim success

ungry, humble and hardworking, Brody Reber had a very good scholastic swimming season overall. There were, of course, the requisite number of triumphs and challenges, ups and downs, ebbs and flows.

“I thought it was a pretty good year,” said Brody, a freshman at Lititz Christian School who swims competitively for Warwick.

But on March 2 at the Cumberland Valley High School pool, the stars aligned, and everything came together for Brody, who captured the District Three Class AAA championship in the 500 freestyle in exciting fashion. Brody swam a personal-best time of 4:37.86 to edge Chambersburg senior Jed Ritchie by .73 seconds to claim the gold medal. Brody also copped a bronze medal in the

100 butterfly at districts. Brody and Ritchie battled the entire distance of the 500 freestyle final before Brody outkicked him to the touch pad.

“I remember the guy in Lane Six (Ritchie) and I were in a pretty good race, neck and neck to the last 25 (meters),” said Brody. “I knew I had a chance to win, so I was going to bring it home. But I was really happy with my time.”

Brody’s winning time at districts represented a drop of five seconds off his personal best in the 500 freestyle from the beginning of the season. An experienced club swimmer, this winter was his first on the scholastic scene.

“I’d have to say the 500 swim at districts is the accomplishment I’m most proud of,” said Brody. “I remember my performance at leagues (Lancaster-Lebanon at Wilson High School in February) was my least favorite thing. But I

Yeah, it’s a competition, not a pageant. And sure, she’d really like to win it.

But the most important thing is the platform, because that’s what allows for a greater sharing of the message.

Lancaster Township resident Kristen Hertzog will participate in the upcoming Mrs. Pennsylvania America competition.

She’s using it as a way to promote her work for the education and gainful employment of underserved individuals, both here and abroad.

“I would like to win because then I get to expand my reach, my platform for bringing about greater access to education and employment to the underserved and the underempowered,” said Hertzog, who’s currently the reigning Mrs. Lancaster,

In line with a broader, more holistic approach, extracurricular activities like theater are extensions of the classroom, teaching life lessons in different settings.

Linden Hall School for Girls’ production of “Alice by Heart” is a living, breathing life lesson. If they looks closely enough, members of the audience will witness actresses growing up right before their very eyes.

“There are so many learning opportunities that come from being involved with the theater program,” said Denny Foreman, the artistic director of “Alice by Heart.” “I want (performers) to learn poise

Rediscovering Lancaster’s hidden treasure

In 1863, German woodworker Michael Dentzel sent his 17-year-old son, Gustav, to open a cabinet store the United States. Gustav began crafting carousels, including one that was installed in Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster in 1899. As improvements were made to the park over the years, the carousel was enhanced as well; a building was constructed around the carousel, and it was upgraded with mechanisms that run on electricity instead of steam. The attraction remained at the park until 1982, but few Lancaster County residents know what became of Gustav’s famous carousel since then.

the following year, where the carousel was active until the park’s closure in 1986. In 1989, the carousel was moved to Dollywood, an amusement park in Tennessee owned by country singer Dolly Parton. The carousel was rebranded as the Dollywood Dentzel Carousel, and it remained at Dollywood for nearly a decade. Finally, after being purchased by a group known as the Friends of the Rocky Springs Carousel in 1998, the historic ride returned to Lancaster, where it has hidden in storage ever since.

Despite the historical significance and rarity of the Rocky Springs Carousel, every attempt at restoring the Rocky Springs Carousel to its former glory and finding a new home for it has been unsuccessful. According to a 2020 census conducted by the National Carousel Association, the ride is one of 208 classic wood carousels in North America. Of these 208 antiques, only 18 were manufactured by the Dentzel Carousel Company.

The longer it remained at Rocky Springs Park, the more the carousel became intertwined with Lancaster’s history. In 1963, local residents began protesting at the park due to its segregated pool, and the attractions were closed to the public in 1968. Rocky Springs Park reopened more than a decade later, but attendance was heavily impacted by the nuclear accident at Three-Mile Island and a local polio outbreak. To ensure its safety, the carousel was removed from Rocky Springs in 1982. It was placed in Lake Lansing Park in Michigan

In 2021, Willow Street resident Eileen Gregg published a book to chronicle the story of the famous attraction titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel.” The book includes the history of the Dentzel

family and photos of the ride that have never been published before. On Jan. 29, 2024, Gregg organized the screening of the first half of a film at Willow Valley Communities that includes videos of the carousel in use during the ‘90s. The footage was taken by Robert Scuorzo of Henderson, N.C., who sent it to Gregg for safekeeping. Gregg plans to hold a viewing of the film’s second half in the near future.

and confidence. Most, if not all, of our performers will go on to professional careers where they will have to do presentations in front of groups of people. If students are involved with this, we see the confidence develop. Every time I see it, it’s like, ‘Yes, this program is working.’ Learning time management is also important. You’ve got to be good at managing time if you’re hoping to be successful.”

Linden Hall will present “Alice by Heart” on Thursday, April 11; Friday, April 12; and Saturday, April 13, all at 7 p.m. at the campus’ Snavely Family Theater, 212 E. Main St., Lititz. While admission to the performance is free, attendees are encouraged to call 717-6268512 to reserve tickets.

“When the curtain goes up, there’s a certain amount of fear and excitement,” said Foreman. “When it comes down, there’s elation and tiredness. There’s a lot of stress for everyone involved. Individually, we’re learning how to handle that stress. But at the end of the day, everybody’s exhausted.”

There are a total of 25 Linden Hall students involved with the production of “Alice by Heart” - 13 cast members and 12 members of the pit orchestra and stage and technical crews. Senior Sara Holler plays the role of Alice Spencer.

“‘Alice by Heart’ is difficult and includes themes that many of us never imagined we would be working with at this level,” said Sara. “It’s empowering message of embracing growth and maturity has definitely brought us together as a cast and crew. We are so excited to perform for the community.”

“There are some adult themes,” said Foreman of the musical from Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater.

“It is somewhat based on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and it’s about a group of people hiding in London tube stations during the blitzkrieg of World War II. One of the characters has ‘Alice in Wonderland’ memorized. She tells the tale to help everyone else through the nightmare of war.”

Linden Hall began its work on “Alice by Heart” by learning the script before Christmas. Over the last three months, the cast and crew have been adding to, tweaking and fine-tuning the performance on afternoons after school.

“This is by far the most difficult musical I’ve ever attempted,” said Foreman. “It demands a huge amount of time, and some of the performers are playing multiple roles. These are highly intelligent and highly motivated students who are involved in other programs, everything from athletics to clubs and community service. They are well-rounded young women. It always amazes me how engaged these drama students are.”

Kristen Hertzog from pg 1

Pennsylvania. “For 30 years, my heart has been with the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It’s a place of desperate and dire need.”

“But as Mrs. Pennsylvania, my focus would have to be on the local community as well, working with local organizations who are focused on gainful employment,” added Hertzog.

“There are so many folks who are doing these amazing things here in Lancaster County.”

A contest for married women who want to make greater impacts on their communities, the Mrs. Pennsylvania America competition will be conducted on Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at Mickey’s Black Box Theatre, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. Hertzog is one of 10 women representing cities across the state and vying for the title.

“It’s very focused on com-

munity development, as well as professional development,” said Hertzog of the competition. “I would say that I’m very competitive as a businesswoman.

I’m very involved in making a difference in the lives of others. It’s more like I’m willing to do the hard work.

When you build five libraries in Haiti, you’ve got to have tenacity.”

The crowning of Mrs. Pennsylvania America is based on the competitors’ performance in three different disciplines: an interview focusing on the contestants’ personal and professional lives; grace and poise; and overall fitness, how each individual takes care of herself physically and mentally.

“We all have a purpose, and some of our purposes have a lightning bolt in them,” said Hertzog. “Sometimes we can overlook the message of the vision. It’s important to

me that people understand that we can all make a difference. Are we living for ourselves or are we living for other people?”

Hertzog’s life has been a journey, one filled with the typical challenges and rewards, the requisite number of ups and downs. But her life’s course was changed as a teenager, when she was struck by that proverbial lightning bolt during her first excursion to Haiti.

“When I was 16, I went on a church mission trip to Haiti,” said Hertzog. “I was with a group of Americans walking from point A to point B. A Haitian woman came up to me and handed me a filthy, crumpled-up towel. When I opened it up, inside was a beautiful little Haitian girl. I started screaming.”

“Later, we found the lady and she said, ‘I thought you could give my baby a better life in America,’” continued Hertzog. “It was a very transformative moment. There was something very meaningful about it for me, and it never left. I think if that hadn’t happened my life would’ve had a totally different trajectory.”

A free pre-concert lecture will begin 45 minutes before each performance time.

The program consists of music inspired by nature, featuring Stephen Lias’ “Gates of the Arctic,” Alan Hovhaness’ “Mysterious Mountain,” and Aaron Copland’s “Suite From “The Tender Land.’” Lias will join the LSO to showcase video presentations he developed for his com -

Additionally, the LSO is partnering with the Lancaster Farmland Trust to bring images and videos from Lancaster County to accompany the Copland piece and to highlight the mission of the Farmland Trust to protect and steward Lancaster farms. “You can’t replace getting together with people and being outdoors,” Samantha said. “Fresh air has so many benefits: boosting energy and mood, decreasing stress and getting Vitamin D from the sun.”

Lancaster Moves will launch its first series of events on Saturday, April 6, at Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St. The kickoff will begin at 9 a.m., and it will include an hour of

cardio exercises and bodyweight workouts designed to suit participants of all fitness levels. Additional sessions will be held on Saturdays, April 13 and 27, at Village Park, 800 Village Road, Lancaster. All April sessions will be free to attend.

Samantha and Andrew’s decision to create Lancaster Moves was partially influenced by the couple’s shared passion for working out. Samantha works full time as a nurse, and Andrew’s career is in the accounting world; in their free time, the husband and wife participate in fitness programs at their local gym. Since their gym primarily offers indoor activities, Samantha and Andrew often workout in their own backyard, and they started to consider ways they could establish a consistent program for the whole community. In addition to their active lifestyle, Samantha and Andrew both have educational backgrounds in fitness; Samantha has an undergraduate degree in kinesiology, and Andrew studied sports manage -

ment in college. Andrew also has several years of experience as both an athlete and a coach.

Samantha and Andrew were also inspired to create Lancaster Moves as a way to honor Andrew’s late grandfather, Charles Gerberich Sr. Charles joined the Lebanon YMCA through its scholarship program in 1937, and he actively volunteered to teach after-school programs there for many years.

Charles also frequently covered membership fees for children whose families could not afford them.

Samantha and Andrew plan to donate 10% of all profits from future Lancaster Moves programs to YMCA youth scholarship funds. “Andrew has this vision to give back, and

Event to showcase zines

The second annual Lancaster Zine Fest will be held on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St. After a sold-out first fest that attracted hundreds of attendees, the event will expand to two floors at Southern Market and feature more than 60 independent artists and writers showcasing a variety of self-published works. Zines, pronounced

“zeens” - short for magazines or fanzines - are self-published booklets that often feature alternative perspectives and collaborations. Zines have a rich history within underground culture and provide a grassroots form of expression for artists to share their ideas with a wider audience. The Lancaster Zine Fest aims to provide a platform for this art form, celebrating and promoting zines and

the authors and artists who create them. Attendees may connect with creators and browse a variety of zines and art items available for purchase. Zine topics may include music, art, comics, poetry, politics, collage, and photography.

In addition to vendors, the event will include free workshops on zine-making, paper-making, book-binding, drawing, and writing for people of all ages, allow-

we’re hoping to carry on his father’s legacy,” Samantha said. “Our goal is to continue to offer outdoor sessions at different locations throughout the county.”

ing festival attendees to learn about the craft from experienced creators.

The event is free and open to people of all ages. For more information, email lancasterzf@gmail.com, contact Kim Holland at notthatkimholland@gmail. com, visit www.lancaster zinefest.com or search for @lancasterzinefest on Instagram. People may also search for #lancasterzine fest on social media.

Workshop to focus on native plants

Penn State Extension will host a Choose Native Mini-Workshop live webinar on Tuesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. The mini workshop will focus on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania in landscapes and water gardens.

Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to natural lands and waterways. Once established, invasive species

can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space, light, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants available for food sources, habitat, and shelter. The workshop will introduce participants to native species options and creative ways to include native species in landscapes and aquatic designs. This mini-workshop is

hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension with a special guest presentation by Native Creations Landscaping Services. The event is offered at no charge through funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Great Lakes Commission. Registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/ ChooseNativeMiniWork shop. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

bounced back and won on a bigger stage.”

Two weeks after the district meet at the PIAA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University, Brody finished 24th in the Class AAA 500 freestyle and 12th in the AAA butterfly.

“My main goal was to medal at states, which didn’t happen,” said Brody. “I wasn’t happy about that. Next year I’ll definitely do things differently, so I perform better at states. I guess it was OK for my first year.”

“I just like the competitiveness of the sport,” Brody added. “I can push myself to be the best I can be. When I see all the hard work I put in and the results that come from it, it’s all worth it.”

It’s the kind of hard work that originates from a fun and healthy team atmosphere. Even though he attends a different school, Brody was familiar with a lot of his Warwick teammates before the initial practice of the season.

“I had already known a lot of the kids on the Warwick team,” said Brody. “I was friends with them previously, so it wasn’t too much of a transition. It made it more fun. It wouldn’t be much fun swimming with a bunch of kids I didn’t know.”

In a very traditional sense, Brody learned to swim in

the same manner that many of us do. What’s different is what he did with it.

“I was 4 or 5 and my parents just wanted me to know how to swim to be safe,” said Brody, 15. “As I stuck with it, I started enjoying it more. I’ve grown bigger and taller, but it’s really just about putting in the work.”
