The friend connected Gerth to Adam Gardner, director of campus services, and on Jan. 28, KPETS moved in. Gardner reported that the day care that had occupied a building near the edge of the campus had vacated in October of 2020. “ We weren’t looking for tenants, but it was also space that we weren’t going to use internally,” said Gardner. “It was a perfect space for (KPETS).” Not only is the space the right size, the building is nearly surrounded by a dog park used by Landis Homes residents. “Just having (KPETS) on the campus is a perk,” said Gardner. “They are close to home, and the service is available for our residents and our team members.” Gardner added that in mid-February, KPETS held a meet-and-greet Karen Gerth (left), her dog Kody, and Adam Gardner are happy to have KPETS in its with Landis Homes The dogs provide a welcome distraction and support to those who benefit from the organization’s services. They are close to home, and the service is available for our residents and our team members.” KPETS is currently seeking more volunteer dogs and owners. “There is a charge for (volunteer) orientation and insurance,” said Gerth. “We have a screening process (volunteers and dogs) go through.” The screening process includes an orientation, a group evaluation, and two visit evaluations. “We want to make sure the dog is enjoying (volunteering),” pointed out Gerth. “Just because the person wants to (volunteer) doesn’t mean the dog wants to.” “I am happy to have (KPETS as) part of the community,” said Gardner, a dog owner himself, who noted that he thinks one of his dogs might enjoy taking part in the program. “(Having KPETS here) sets Landis Homes apart a little bit.” Readers who would like to know more about KPETS may visit www.kpets.org or call 888-68KPETS (888-685-7387). Gerth noted that she hoped volunteers and their dogs would soon be visiting on a regular basis. “We have 340 volunteers,” said Gerth, who added that some volunteers have registered multiple dogs with the organization.

Even as a baby, Hunter Bristow loved trains. “We call him the train master,” said his grandma Donna Frias. In early March, Hunter got to experience the ride of a lifetime when Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley arranged for the 10-year-old from Lititz to spend the day as a train engineer with Amtrak. Hunter was born with osteochondrodysplasia, a rare hereditary bone and cartilage condition. After a surgical mistake three years ago, he was paralyzed and now uses a wheelchair to get around. Although he was eligible for his wish in 2019, he had to wait a few years due to the pandemic. When the big day finally arrived, Hunter was all smiles as he got ready to board the train at the Lancaster Amtrak station. “Ever since he’s been a little kid, we’ve been buying him toy trains and taking him on train rides,” noted Hunter’s father, Daniel Bristow. “He probably has See Make-A-Wish pg 2

Reider Earns Spot On Academic Squad Madeline Reider of Lititz was among the 15 field hockey student-athletes at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, named to the 2021 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad. The program recognizes student-athletes who had a
cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the current academic year and who were nominated by their NFHCA member coach. Reider is a graduate of Warwick High School. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in exercise science.

He’s always looking for new ones and different ones.” Hunter’s love of trains might come from his grandfather Herland Frias, who is a retired Amtrak worker. “From day one, Hunter got into trains,” Herland noted. “He’s taken train rides all over the place - to Chicago, to Boston.” Cara Feldman, vice president of development for Make-A-Wish, ex plained that Hunter’s wish included the opportunity to punch tickets on the train and blow the train whistle as the train traveled from Lancaster to Philadelphia, where Hunter and his family, including his father; his mother, Shannon; and his 5-year-old brother, Brooks, took a train to Newark, Del. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley has granted more than 7,500 wishes for local children. At his send-off, Hunter was greeted by many of his classmates from his fourthgrade class at Lititz Elementary School, who surprised their friend with posters and well wishes. “Hunter is a big part of our classroom,” said classmate Hadley Reed. “We’re really happy to be here for him.” Herland noted that seeing his grandson’s wish granted was very touching. “This is such a special day for us,” he said. “It’s very emotional. We hope this will lift up his spirits, because he’s been through a lot.”

Classes will be taught by local performers and industry processionals and will focus on a variety of topics, including singing, acting, and different styles of dance, such as jazz, ballet, tap, and musical theater. Most classes are stand-alone. Two classes will be offered every Monday, with each geared toward a different age group. Monthly specialty classes will be offered on topics like improvisation, audition preparation, and vocal techniques. A partial schedule for upcoming Mondays has been announced. On April 4, A.K. Gallery To Exhibit Pastel Artwork Stepenaski’s artwork reflects her love of the outdoors, and she looks to bring a sense of serenity and healing to the viewer. A key piece in Stepenaski’s show at Trinity Art Gallery is “The Road Home - Weaver Homestead,” which features one of the oldest buildings still standing in Lancaster County. The piece was created from the point of view of a farmer returning home after working in the fields. A member of the Lancaster County Art Association, York Art Association and Maryland Pastel Society, Stepenaski often participates in the Lancaster County Art Association Show and the Historic Yellow Springs Art Show. Additionally, she teaches pastel painting at several locations in Lancaster County.

United Zion Retirement Community’s Trinity Art Gallery will present “Exploring Lancaster County” by artist Dot Stepenaski from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Friday, April 29. The exhibit consists of detailed pastel works highlighting many places in Lancaster County, including local parks and farms. Stepenaski began drawing at an early age and later became hooked on art when she learned more about the subject in high school. She attended Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Philadelphia College of Art, and she has trained with artists Maggie Price, Robert McKinley, William A. Schneider, Lynne Yancha, Albert Handell and Jeanne RosierSmith.

Sportsmen Plan Activities Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, 552 Oak Tree Road, Manheim, has announced its upcoming activities. The first installment of the trap shooting program will occur on Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. Weather permitting, shoots will be held every Saturday, with a few exceptions, until late October. Trap shooting will also be held from 5 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday starting on April 6. This program is open to the public. Participants must bring their own shells. For more information,
call Steve at 717-917-3174. The club will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the barbecue trailer located at the Manheim Pool entrance. The sportsmen’s club is sponsoring a BB team, which uses the indoor range each Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The Manheim Central rifle team has wrapped up its season of practices and matches at the Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, and these activities will resume in November.

OMPH School chose to aid Good Samaritan after learning that the organization keeps a wish list of everyday items it needs most. OMPH School families donated paper products, cleaning products, and food items. Donations were presented to Good Samaritan representative Juliana Dudley by OMPH principal Mrs. Snyder and OMPH students. OMPH School students also collected snack items and made cards for the local police department and fire station. The care packages were delivered at the end of Catholic Schools Week and accepted by Officers Rodriguez and Himeisen. Enrollment is open at OMPH School. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) welcomes its third music director finalist Michael Butterman to conduct its next masterwork series, “Awaken.” Performances will take place on Friday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 9, at 3 and 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster. A free pre-concert lecture will begin one hour before the performance times. Additionally, free/pay-whatyou-can performance will occur
on Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. as part of the LSO’s Neighborhood Series. The concert will feature Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis”; Richter’s “Spring” from his recomposition of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”; and Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 1.” The central work will be Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, in which the composer sought to honor Ukraine, incorporating numerous Ukrainian
folk songs and melodies. The LSO has retitled this work “The Ukrainian.” A portion of the concert’s ticket sales will be directed to Ukrainian relief efforts. The LSO will be partnering with the Ukraine War Refugee Aid Fund set up by Bethany Slavic Church in Ephrata to accept donations. Snavely Receives Academic Honors Corbin Snavely of Lititz was named to the dean’s list for academic achievements during the fall 2021 semester at The Citadel, Charleston, S.C. To be named to the dean’s list, cadets and students must be registered for 12 or more semester hours and have a grade point average of 3.20 or higher, with no grade of I (incomplete) and no grade below C for work in a semester. In addition, Snavely achieved gold star recognition. Gold stars were awarded to cadets and students at

The Citadel who achieved a 3.7 grade point average or higher in the fall 2021 semester. Cadets were recognized at the awards parade on Jan. 28, where they were presented their gold stars. Gold stars may be worn on recipients’ uniforms throughout the semester following the students’ academic achievement. A gold star recognition certificate is awarded to noncadet students who meet the requirements. Veteran and active-duty students are also awarded challenge coins.
