“(The Race Against Racism) is another way to forward the mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” explained Bob Hebert, Lancaster YWCA director of communications and community engagement. “It’s a fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute four times per year.”

This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. More than eight models will appear in the fashion show. Models will include members of Eastern Star and their daughters and granddaughters. Among them will be Brenda Long, Hanna Mckennon, Moira Donegan, Linda Shoemaker, Marissa Greathouse, Kendall Hunsicker, Dorothy J. Becker-Drumheller, and Helen Row. In addition to the Lititz Springs Chapter, members of the Robert Fulton Chapter of Quarryville will also model clothing. According to Watson, the designs have already proven to be popular. “Our members went for their fittings, and they were thrilled,” she said. “They (were) excited about wearing these (clothes).”

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest international fraternal organization open to men and women. The Lititz Springs Chapter, which draws more than 100 members from Ephrata, Lititz, and Manheim, meets in the Manheim Masonic Lodge on the fourth Thursday of each month. “We have a lot of fun,” said Watson. “We have parties and state events.”

Watson also noted that organization members hold a variety of fundraisers, including a food stand at the Manheim Farm Show Parade and a community garage sale. The fashion show will be a new fundraiser for the chapter.

“Our main focus is charity, and we

do a lot for our communities,” explained Watson, who said that local groups that serve the community, including police, food pantries, and local social services agencies in Ephrata, Lititz, and Manheim, are the main recipients of funds raised by the chapter, but she added that the organization also donates to nonprofits that work to fight multiple sclerosis.

The local chapter welcomes new members who meet certain criteria. “There is an ethical component, and we are looking for community leaders who want to be involved in service,” said Watson. Readers who would like to know more about membership may call Darlene Bechtel at 717626-9912.

Exploring, Growing Together, a book discussion group at Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC), 201 E. Market St., Lititz, will continue its 2018-19 series, which aims to help people explore beliefs in a safe discussion environment.

Landis Homes Celebrates Student Artwork Members of the Landis Homes resident art committee recently selected the 25th student work to become part of the retirement community’s art collection. Siyu Wang received the 2019 Art Student Scholarship Award. Wang, a Lancaster Mennonite High School senior, was chosen for her intricate depiction of a squirrel in colored pencil.

Wang is from Beijing, China, where she lives with her family, including her parents and a younger brother. Wang, who lives with the Steve Cornell family during the school year, is completing her third year at Lancaster Mennonite School and plans to graduate in May. Each year since 1995, Landis Homes has selected a piece of artwork from the Lancaster Mennonite High School Fine Arts Festival to become part of

a permanent art collection on the retirement community campus. In return for the work, Landis Homes makes contributions to the Lancaster Mennonite School art department and to the student to help further their education.

To mark the 25th year milestone, a special reception will be held on Sunday, March 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the new Crossings Gallery at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The public is invited to view all 25 works of art which will be on display. The winners from the previous years, many of whom are now in their 30s and 40s, have been invited to attend this event. Current and former teachers

Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee.

The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race.

Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts.

“Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert.

“The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.”

The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in

the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training.

Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg.

The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes.

The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome.

Auction, Paint Night Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has posted two events.

Landis Valley will hold its Spring Benefit Auction on Saturday, April 13. The silent auction will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the live auction will start at 5:30 p.m. Food will be available for purchase at 4:30 p.m.

Many of the objects at the auction were made by artists who demonstrate, teach, or sell their works at the museum.

Each spring, the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) participates in a one-day local tour, singing at schools, retirement homes, and community centers. The singers learn about and build connections with the local community as well as share music with those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to hear MCCL. On Friday, March 29, the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir, both consisting of students in grades six through 12, will sing at the Water Street Mission, Calvary Homes, and Faith Mennonite High School.

On Friday, April 5, the Carol Choir, consisting of children in grades two through five, will share music at Fairmount Homes Retirement Community, Hinkletown Mennonite School, and Ten Thousand Villages. The choirs are directed by Sarah Wingard and Rosemary Blessing.

Penn State Extension will offer a free virtual walking program and virtual tour of some of Pennsylvania’s natural wonders. Everybody Walk Across PA is a program for worksites, schools, community groups or any other group, split into teams of up to five people.

Each team member will try to average walking or exercising 15 miles per week for eight weeks, walking with their team or on their own at a time and place convenient for them. Individuals with all levels of physical ability are encouraged to participate.

Weekly emails to the teams will include the area to virtually visit

the world and through time.

In addition to the choirs that will go on local tour days, MCCL offers a Men’s Ensemble directed

by Jonathan Shoff; Prelude Music, for children in kindergarten through grade one, led by Shoff, interim director; and Choristers, for children in grades two through seven, directed by Kit Baker.

The mission of MCCL is training children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The choirs and the Prelude Music and Choristers programs are open to children from all church backgrounds and are sponsored by Lancaster Mennonite School as a service to the community.

The late Milton Haldeman genealogy collection will be available. Haldeman was a librarian and genealogist who researched local and Mennonite family history. He printed his family’s history and helped others print family history books as well. Haldeman liked to visit and study cemeteries, and he also worked on maintaining them.

Jewelry Sale from pg 1 time. “We have a tote full of donations, and we have shoeboxes full of donations we have been sorting out,” said Arnold, who noted that most items come from estates and from individuals who are downsizing. She noted that she donated a number of items she had not worn for some time, and she confessed to purchasing a number of items last year.

The Friends work to divide the items into groups and display them in an attractive manner for the sale. “We sort them out so it’s nicely (arranged),” said Arnold.

“This year we will have room dividers with fabric covers and pins to display the necklaces.” The Friends also removed the glass from large picture frames to create displays. Arnold estimated that a dozen tables were filled with items at the 2018 sale.

Among the items that will be offered for sale will be watches that will be sold as is. Categories have been created for clip earrings, vintage jewelry, children’s jewelry,

and holiday jewelry. Arnold noted that both cufflinks and belly-button rings have been part of the sale in the past. All items will be nominally priced, and jewelry sets will be sold at special prices. “We have scads of earrings, necklaces, and bracelets,” said Arnold.

The Friends will continue to collect gently used pieces of jewelry right up until the start of the event.

Following the sale, Arnold said the items that are left will be boxed up and stored for next year. “That gives us a headstart,” she said.

Last year’s sale raised a record $1,900. Funds raised by the event will be donated to the organization’s general budget to be used at the discretion of the library. The Friends’ next fundraiser will be a book sale, which will be held at the library from Thursday, May 2, through Saturday, May 4.

The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place from July 21 to 27 at the Northern Lancaster County Fish and Game Protection Association in West Cocalico Township.

Through its participation in the the Veterans and Family Memorial Care (VFMC) Operation Valentine program, Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory collected hundreds of valentines from individuals, classes and clubs throughout Lancaster County. The business reported this was one of the largest responses it had experienced. The valentines were delivered to the Lebanon and Coatesville VAs on Feb. 13, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Nearly 1,000 VFMC providers nationwide sponsor the annual VFMC Operation Valentine initiative.

Lecture To Focus On Women Of The White House LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a presentation about “Surrogate First Ladies” on Thursday, April 4, in Ryder Hall. USA Field Hockey Posts Games The USA Field Hockey women’s national field hockey team has announced it will return to Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim, for the remainder of its FIH Pro League home games.

The team returned from the Southern Hemisphere earlier in March following two close defeats against No. 3 Australia and No. 6 New Zealand. USA will host No. 13 Belgium on Friday, March 29, and No. 2 Great Britain on Sunday, March 31.

Additionally, USA Field Hockey and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) will hold a joint press conference between the U.S. women’s national field

hockey team and opponents Belgium and Great Britain on Thursday, March 28, at 1 p.m. at Spooky Nook Sports.

The FIH Pro League is a new annual global home and away league that features 13 different nations between men’s and women’s national field hockey teams. In honor of its 250th anniversary, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC) in Manheim will present Piercing Word’s “Passion: The Musical” on Sunday, March 31, at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to the show, which will be a Scriptural retelling of Jesus’ journey to the cross.

We Can Do So Much “We had 500 attendees last year and are hoping that number is higher this year,” said program support liaison Linda Swisher, speaking about the 26th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Education Conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, at LampeterStrasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster.

In order for the conference to serve a broad range of people, an equally wide-ranging list of topics will be addressed in morning and afternoon breakout sessions. A sampling of subjects includes drug and alcohol prevention and current drug trends; anger management for adolescents; mindfulness; eating disorders, specifically anorexia; how to help bereaved students; special education law; diversity; helping students with anxiety; planning for retirement; and effectively managing language barriers. There will also be classes on literacy, behavior, math, autism, technology, and preschool/Early Intervention.

“Two sessions that we are very excited about this year are the sessions on Phenomenal Science Instruction and Stopping the Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have offered a STEM-related topic, and the Stop the Bleed session is a national

He will also focus on establishing an environment in which student rapport and academic success can be cultivated, using his story to tie in strategies to engage at-risk students. During the morning breakout sessions, Anderson will lead a discussion on building allies in the classroom in order to help troubled students recognize their full potential.

The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be available. Tayler Harris Prima Theatre Company, 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, will present “Godspell” in April. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, April 5, 12, 19, and 26, and Saturdays, April 6, 13, 20, and 27.

The musical by Stephen Schwartz loosely follows the parables of Jesus with humor and playful storytelling.

Instead of a religious or historic focus, the musical centers on the building of a community out of an eclectic group of people. The show features wellknown songs such as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” and “By My Side.”

The show began as book writer JohnMichael Tebelak’s thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970. It reached Off-Broadway in 1971 and was made into a major motion picture starring Victor Garber in 1973. In 2012, a Broadway revival showcased contemporary references and new musical arrangements, in which Prima’s production is based.

The Prima show will feature an intimate, in-the-round seating arrangement. The cast includes Tayler Harris as Jesus and Christian Harward as John the Baptist/Judas, as well as Ashley Coia, Monica DePaul, Ellie Faggion, Joshua Kramer Keefer, Kayla Klase, Miley LoBalsamo, Donté Wilder, and Wendy Yellin.

J. Scott Lapp is the production’s director, with Chelsea Lapp as choreographer and Scott Williams as music director.

All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together … We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

“When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through innovative approaches to teaching. IU 13 welcomes everyone who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’”

In conjunction with April being National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, YWCA Lancaster has slated its annual campaign to address sexual violence and promote the prevention of sexual violence in the local community. The 2019 theme is “I ASK.” YWCA Lancaster will hold its fifth annual Clothing and Comfort Drive during April. Community members are invited to make donations of new clothing items or monetary donations to purchase new clothing for victim survivors of sexual assault who are given a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) at local hospitals. Many hospitals provide donated clothing to patients in order to replace the clothing collected for evidential purposes.

Items needed include undergarments, sweatshirts, T-shirts, yoga pants, and sweatpants for people of all genders and ages, as well as comfort items such as small stuffed animals, fidget toys, coloring books, and stress toys. Items may be dropped off at YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays from Monday, April 1, through Tuesday, April 30.

Take Back the Night will take place on April 1 at 6:30 p.m. at YWCA Lancaster. The survivorcentered event will focus on uplifting and supporting those whose lives have been impacted by sexual violence. It will feature Jennifer Storm, Pennsylvania Victim Advocate and survivor, as well as a survivor speak-out, during which survivors may

share their stories, how they healed, and how they have moved forward.

Body Safety Story Time and Craft events will be offered at Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St. Sexual assault counselor and educator Danielle Perez will lead the interactive and family-friendly programs, which will focus on raising awareness of body safety and boundaries. Programs for prekindergarten-age children will be offered on Mondays, April 1 and 15, at 10:30 a.m., with programs for school-age children on Wednesdays, April 10 and 24, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Not Alone: Uniting Stories of Survivors will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at Zoetropolis, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. YWCA Lancaster, in collaboration with Lancaster Story Slam, will host a night of storytelling and spoken word sharing survivors’ stories. Registration is required for the pay-asyou-can event.

On Wednesday, April 17, a fundraiser will take place at Rachel’s Creamery and Creperie, 201 W. Walnut St., Lancaster.

The All Things Home Fair will have a new home this year. The annual event, which was held at Brightside Opportunities Center in previous years, will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Rec Center, 525 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, and its next-door neighbor, Price Elementary School, 615 Fairview Ave. The host sites are anchor organizations in SoWe, the southwest quadrant of Lancaster city bordered by Fairview Avenue and Prince, King, Manor, and Seymour streets.

SoWe is a larger revitalization effort driven by Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and neighborhood residents, explained SoWe neighborhood director Jake Thorsen.

Residents of the southwest quadrant are especially encouraged to attend the home fair, but everyone else in Lancaster County is welcome to attend.

The fair is organized by LHOP and SoWe and will aim to provide helpful information for renters, homeowners, and buyers and sellers of property.

Mortgage lenders, real estate

agents, home inspectors, attorneys, and insurance agents will be among the exhibitors. Title companies and pest control agencies, along with the City of Lancaster, Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, and Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat, will also be represented.

“We (will encourage) people to talk to each of the vendors and enter door prize drawings,” said LHOP director of development Laurie Moir. Among the prizes is a family pass to Conestoga Pines Pool.

“There are lots of giveaways just for coming,” added event cochair Carole Kirchner. She noted that while giveaways are fun, the real prize is the knowledge folks will glean at the event.

“My daughter came two years ago, and afterward, she said, ‘What a really neat event,’” Kirchner related. “You will walk away with something you didn’t know.”

The event is open to everyone - not just first-time homebuyers - and children will be welcome.

There will be activities for the youngsters, including the opportunity to decorate Easter bags and go on a scavenger hunt.

There is also a playground

behind the rec center and near the school for outdoor play.

The seminar topics will cover the pathways to home ownership, real estate investing, rental etiquette, and how to be an attractive rental candidate.

“We’re emphasizing being your best advocate and having the

tools to navigate the (rental or homeownership) system,” Moir said. She noted that the seminar “Rental Candidate to Rental Tenant” is a preview of a program LHOP is developing. Topics discussed will be how to build credit and how to get to a position where one is ready to rent.

Founded in the fall of 1976, the Keystone Brass Quintet has performed programs for churches, colleges, schools, and numerous summer music series in the tri-state area. Iron Furnace Walking Tour Planned tour will begin with an overview of the role that the Susquehanna River played in the Industrial Revolution during the mid-1800s to early 1900s.

The walk will include tours at the Henry Clay Furnace and the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The Musselman/Vesta was nominated and received the Community Initiative Award from the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that exhibited excellence in the field of historic preservation. The awards are presented by Preservation Pennsylvania, a

Several changes have taken place recently at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center.

The center has been given an extension of its lease to include the furnace ruins. This will allow Rivertownes to clear more of the ruins. Also, Rivertownes has installed eight self-guided panels in the area. These panels will guide visitors through the ruins when the center is not open.

The Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Furnace Exhibit is a new

addition at the Iron Center. The exhibit houses many of the artifacts dug up during the 1989 to 1994 summer field studies conducted by Evans and students from Millersville University.

The walking tour will be led by David Haneman, Rivertownes president, and Lenny Droege, director of the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization committed to serving people with disabilities in Pennsylvania, has been accredited by the Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a worldwide coalition of nonprofit programs that train and place assistance dogs.

ADI’s objectives are to establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of assistance dog acquisition, training and partnership; facilitate communication and learning among member programs; and educate the public on the benefits of assistance dogs and

ADI membership. Assistance dog organizations that pass ADI’s accreditation process become ADI Accredited Member programs and are assessed every five years to ensure they meet the highest standards in the industry.

In 2018, UDS moved its corporate headquarters to a new location, allowing for substantial growth in its service dogs program. UDS Service Dogs specializes in dogs to assist individuals, including veterans with mobility disabilities. The dogs are trained to provide services such as

LancasterHistory will present the second installment of its new artifact-focused programming series, the Material Culture Forum, on Thursday, March 28. Curatorial staff will present in-depth object studies of Lancaster County portraiture and clothing, followed by a presentation by Zara Anishanslin, Ph.D., who will discuss her book “Portrait of a Woman in Silk: Hidden Histories of the British Atlantic World.”
