Moravian Manor Warriors are different type of support group

There aren’t too many better ways of staying active than becoming involved in the community. And for a group of Moravian Manor residents, there aren’t too many better ways of getting involved in the community than by supporting local athletics.

That’s the simple premise. But the backstory of how the Moravian Manor Warriors acquired their nickname is far more engaging.

“One of Moravian Manor’s mottos is, ‘We’re a community within a community,’” said Donald Lund, one of the unofficial founding members of the Moravian Manor Warriors. “(Moravian Manor officials) like us residents to get involved with the community as much as possible. We feel like it’s a great thing to support (Warwick High School athletic

teams) in what they are doing.”

“Sports are important, no matter where you go,” added Lund. “It’s just a big part of our present day and age. It’s a big part of life. For high school kids, (athletics) is where it all starts.”

The Moravian Manor Warriors are a group of 10 to 18 residents of the local retirement community located at 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz, within walking distance of Warwick High School and the downtown business district. The group of local sports enthusiasts - some of whom are originally from Lititz and Lancaster County and some of whom aren’t - attend Warrior sporting events in football, volleyball, field hockey and soccer, but they especially seem to have taken a liking to the Warwick boys’ basketball program.

“You have to keep active or you’re going to end your life earlier than you want to,” said Lund,

Lancaster County A.A. provides help for sobriety

Alcoholism is a medical condition that, if left unaddressed, can wreak havoc and ruin lives.

The first step in treatment involves recognizing and acknowledging a problem exists. Lancaster County Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) treats the condition through empathy, communication and human support.

“Figures suggest that one-third of the (country’s) population has a drinking problem,” said Rick S.,

a central service office volunteer for Lancaster County A.A. “For me, an alcoholic is someone who is drinking against their own will. There’s something in their mind and body that’s making them drink. They’re literally from all walks of life.”

“I’ve been very good friends with lawyers and doctors,” Rick S. continued. “I’ve been very good friends with people who are a step away from living on the streets. Everywhere you run across these people. They’re people who just want to live a better life and be

If Warwick students are fire, WEF ignites the flames

“Great teaching lights the fire. Great communities bring the kindling.”

That’s not the Warwick Education Foundation’s (WEF) official mission statement. But it is a catchy phrase shared by Barb Mobley that encapsulates what WEF does and what it’s all about.

“The education foundation enriches education for students, over and above what the school district is able to provide through its budget process,” said Mobley, who’s been WEF’s executive director for 13 years. “We do that by providing grants to teachers. They’re creative people. They

Alcoholics Anonymous from

better people. It’s not just willpower to stop drinking; it’s getting along with yourself. That’s what’s kept me sober.”

Headquartered at 313 W. Liberty St., Lancaster, Lancaster County A.A. has a mission that revolves around meetings and bringing people together to address drinking problems in a therapeutic environment. Lancaster County A.A. offers about 148 hourlong meetings each week all over the city and county. Meetings are held mostly at churches, but also at its unofficial clubhouse, the 521 Club, 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, and at community centers in areas like Lititz, Neffsville, Ephrata, Millersville, Gap, Elizabethtown, Willow Street and Denver.

Lancaster County A.A. also conducts seven meetings a week at the Lancaster County Prison and offers Zoom meetings.

The meetings are free to attend, but donations, which go a long way in funding Lancaster County A.A.’s

work, are accepted.

“What a lot of newcomers say is, ‘I can’t believe how happy everybody is. What are all these people so happy about?’” said Rick S. “There are people who come in who are really suffering. But I think it helps to see people who have long-term sobriety. There’s a very light and friendly vibe. When the meeting starts, it can be very serious. There can be tears, tears of joy and tears of sorrow. Ultimately, the vibe is unconditional support. For the most part, there’s nothing more than love and support.”

Lancaster County A.A. offers individuals two kinds of meetings: open meetings for anyone, including spouses, medical professionals and students, and closed meetings for only people who identify as having a drinking problem. The meetings are led by a volunteer - many times people who are recovering alcoholics themselves.

On the average, about 20 people attend each Lancaster County A.A.

meeting.

“Each meeting has a similar format,” said Rick S. “After an opening or a greeting, we read the Alcoholics Anonymous preamble. Most meetings will have announcements about events and happenings. Typically, we read the 12 steps and the traditions, and we celebrate any A.A. anniversaries. Then it just opens up. If people want to share, they can share, or if not, they can just listen. At the end of the meeting we say, ‘Thanks for being here and thanks for helping each other.’ We tell them, ‘Keep coming back. It works if you work it.’”

Lancaster County A.A., which was established locally in 1947, is operated entirely through the efforts of volunteers. The organization also operates a 24-hour phone help line, 717-394-3238.

“There’s no doubt that there’s a genetic component to (alcoholism), and there can be a traumatic piece to it,” said Rick S., a resident

The festival will take place on Saturday, March 29, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Luther Acres Towne Center, 250 St. Luke Drive, Lititz. The Luther Acres Book Fest will feature more than 20 authors of both fiction and nonfiction, including a wide variety of genres. The authors will present book talks, in which they will speak about their books as well as a

The authors and their presentation topics include Kelly Barr, “My Journey to Writing Historical Romance”; Jane Clark, “The Importance of Collecting and Writing Ancestral and Family Stories”; Michael Dobson, “Managing Your Career as a Writer”; Don Helin, “From Army Regulations to Thrillers: A Writer’s Journey”; Kathleen King, “Adding Fantasy to Historical Fiction”; Carolyn Kleinman, “How Local Events Inspired a Historical Fiction Book and a Murder Mystery”; Melissa Nordhoff, “My Characters Are Large and In Charge!”

Warwick Education Foundation

know what’s needed in the classroom. We’re investing in the future of our community.”

WEF, which does not operate out of a brick-and-mortar building or office, provides teachers throughout the Warwick School District with two opportunities each year - once in the spring and once in the fall - to apply for monetary educational grants that are used to enhance their students’ learning experiences. WEF reviews and evaluates the grant proposals before approving them.

“Education is about creating a foundation so kids can be successful and solve problems,” said Mobley. “It can give them experiences that make them productive citizens in our world.”

“I think my favorite part is seeing the grants implemented,” added

Mobley. “My personal passion is seeing kids get experiences they might not otherwise get. Our role is to bring opportunities to kids. That’s what it’s all about.”

To this point of the 2024-25 school year, WEF has approved 57 educational grants throughout the school district, some as large as $150,000. During the 28 years of its existence, WEF, which is overseen by a 15-member board, has awarded grants totaling more than $3.8 million.

Those grants have been used for things like expert presentations, speakers, extracurricular programs, technology resources and equipment.

“We work well together, but the education foundation is completely separate from the school district,” said Mobley. “We’re definitely part-

ners. They’re the experts. They know how to teach. Our role is to provide resources above and beyond.”

There are currently more than 3,700 students in kindergarten through 12th grade enrolled in the Warwick School District. The school district operates six schools: Warwick High School, Warwick Middle School, Lititz Elementary, Kissel Hill Elementary, John Beck Elementary and John R. Bonfield Elementary.

“It’s important that people understand that we can strengthen not just the individual students, but also the community,” said Mobley, WEF’s only paid employee. “Hopefully, we’re making the school district stronger and making the area more attractive. The thinking is larger.”

WEF’s work is supported through fundraising events, business contributions, private donations

and Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.

“Many people support us,” said Mobley. “We have very supportive businesses in our area who have been generous over the years. There are people who believe in our mission and want to help make things happen.”

WEF’s practices differ from some other education foundations in Lancaster County.

“I think most school districts (in Lancaster County) have education foundations, but they’re not all the same,” said Mobley. “It’s just the way they’ve evolved. At Warwick, we don’t have specific scholarships for students. To us, it makes sense for the money to go into their education while they’re at Warwick. With other education foundations, the money is utilized in the stu -

Partly through the vision of former Warwick School District superintendent John George, WEF was established in 1997. Some of the original WEF board members donated money out of their own pockets to fund the modest grants of that time.

“It’s really a grassroots organization,” said Mobley. “Since then, the education foundation has changed in several ways. The amount of connections we’ve made and the money we’ve been able to make has increased over the years. The number of grants that we have has ballooned.”

Camps begin at 9 a.m. each day and run until 3:30 p.m. Lunch is provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme. Although the themes for this year’s camps have not been chosen, Roth noted that Wacky Wednesday is always a favorite. Each day begins with worship featuring a worship band and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The speaker at the New Holland camp will be Petra pastor Brian Coles,” reported Martin. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group

competition, enjoying a snack, and joining in a closing assembly. Volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school, college, or club coaches, and many serve for both weeks. Interns assist the directors and coaches. According to Roth, interns who have helped out at camp previously “know the drill,” so they will be given more leadership responsibility. “They will lead debrief time at the end of each day and be in charge of group competitions and games,” explained Martin. Huddles, groups of five to seven students, are overseen by a huddle leader. Huddle leaders are high school students who lead, guide, and encourage campers. About 50 huddle leaders are needed for a camp of 120 to 150 students, which is the number expected at both camps this year.

Student participants are also given the chance to take part in Coins for Campers, a competition between boys and girls to raise funds for similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar. Martin stated that in 2024, the goal was to raise $5,000 for the other camps and that the goal was surpassed. There is a cost to attend camps. A sibling discount is applied

Moravian Manor Warriors

an 84-year-old native of Haddonfield, N.J., who moved to Moravian Manor in 2019. “We don’t want to age and get old. That’s how you keep yourself young. Anything Warwick offers, we’re a part of it. That’s the key when you come to a retirement home.”

The Moravian Manor Warriors are more than a collection of casual local sports fans. They are staunch Warwick supporters.

The Moravian Manor Warriors even attend select Warwick away games, courtesy of transportation provided by the retirement community.

“We have our own little section behind the team (bench),” said Lund. “We’re very boisterous, and we’re cheering them on. We don’t just sit there. We’re (the teams’) good luck charm.”

“We have a good old time,” Lund continued. “The team actually looks for us in the stands. I think

(the players) really appreciate the support we give them. It’s fun to get to know the kids, and we’ve gotten to know their parents and grandparents. It’s like one big family.”

This winter, the Warwick boys’ basketball team certainly gave the Moravian Manor Warriors something to cheer about. Warwick captured the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two championship with a 9-1 league mark and finished its season 20-4 overall.

“We knew they were going to be good because they had some returning players,” said Lund. “They had a terrific season. The kids have a lot of chemistry. What impresses us is that one of the players leads the team in prayer before the games start. It’s just been wonderful following the team.”

ward to spring sports, including boys’ volleyball.

Not long after Lund moved to Moravian Manor Communities in 2019, he and a small group of fellow residents started attending Warwick home football games. When word got out about what they were doing, more residents joined in.

“It’s fun. It makes for a good winter with games twice a week,” said Lund. “It breaks up the routine. Before we go, we all have dinner together. We like watching the team, and it’s like a little activity for us.”

“We are part of the community,” Lund continued. “The rapport we get from going to these games means the world to all of us. But we’re appreciated too. It just feels good being part of that. We don’t plan to stop. I think community involvement is very, very important.”
