They still make Wilbur Chocolate in Lititz ... well, sort of
BY JEFF FALK
Thehistoric town of Lititz has always been associated with Wilbur Chocolate, or for at least as long as anyone can remember. The reminders are everywhere, the signs are all around, and with a little imagination, visitors can still make out the aroma of chocolate being made here.
In 2016, the production of Wilbur Chocolate at its longtime plant on
North Broad Street was ceased, ending the site’s celebrated 125-year run of creating the confectionery.
Present owner Cargill Inc. established the Wilbur Chocolate outlet store across the street at 45 N. Broad St. and opened a Wilbur plant on Lincoln Avenue in Lititz, where white chocolate is currently manufactured.
In addition to the sale of a variety of retail items, the outlet store creates some in-house delicacies that incorporate the use of Wilbur Chocolate. A lot of that chocolate, which has stayed true to the original Wilbur recipe, is being produced in Mount Joy, in Hazleton and at the Lincoln Avenue facility.
Erica Dixon, the manager of the Wilbur Chocolate store, said she is routinely asked if Wilbur Chocolate is still produced in Lititz.
“I’ll explain to them about the facility on Lincoln Avenue and the white chocolate,” said Dixon. “Here (at the store), we
create a variety of chocolate, kitchen-made items, but we don’t make the chocolate here.”
In many ways, the Wilbur outlet store connects Lititz visitors to the town’s chocolate past.
In the early 1900s, commercial success expanded the production of Wilbur Chocolate from Philadelphia to Lititz. Before Cargill purchased Wilbur in 1992, chocolate was produced in Lititz for the better part of the 20th century.

“Lunch with Luke” provides nourishment for body and soul
BY JEFF FALK
The feeling one gets from helping others is hard to describe. It’s like having your belly filled with warm f ood, under a welcoming roof engulfed in fellowship.
Although the weekly meals at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ (UCC) are not evangelistic, the church serves food that’s good for the soul. The church’s members call the meal “Lunch with Luke,” and everyone involved gets more out of it than they put into it.

with Lititz and Wilbur Chocolate,” said Dixon. “When people think of Lititz, they think of Wilbur Chocolate, and vice versa. They kind of coincide with each other.”
Dixon said the Wilbur Chocolate outlet store welcomes thousands of visitors each year, some of whom are local and some of whom are from out of town. They are drawn by curiosity, the Wilbur legacy and, of course, their love of chocolate.
“ Wilbur Chocolate is a brand
that’s been around for many years,” said Dixon. “People want to see the history. We have a lot of items made at the facility for sale at the store. People can also learn a little about history when they’re here. Our claim to fame, our signature item, is Wilbur Buds.”
“ We’re very proud of being a part of the Lititz community,” concluded Dixon. “We want to continue the tradition of serving the area. We want to continue to uphold the Wilbur legacy.”
Toward spiritual health
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Veronica Jimenez, lay counselor, volunteer prison chaplain, and author of the Sound Mind Awareness curriculum, is known for the classes she teaches at churches and recovery houses and for her counseling ministry. Jimenez’s journey to this place, however, has been hard-won and filled with twist and turns.
Originally from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City, Jimenez suffered abuse from an early age. “I learned shame and rage very early,” Jimenez recalled, noting her situation created the “perfect storm for mental
illness.” “I wasn’t a healthy kid,” she said. “My heart, soul, mind, and spirit were all affected.” When Jimenez was a teenager, her anger became such an issue, she was sent to live in a girls’ home for a year. “That’s where I developed a heart for the incarcerated,” she said.
Around age 11, Jimenez remembers attending a Metro World Child Sunday school run by pastor Bill Wilson. “That’s where I first heard that God has a son named Jesus who loves children,” said Jimenez, who noted that at that time the grace of God first touched her life. “I still lived in a bad environment, but I learned to pray,” she said.

Lunch with Luke
St. Luke’s UCC, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, serves a free lunch every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in its social hall and has been doing so for the better part of the last 14 years. Over that time, members of St. Luke’s have served an estimated 300,000 meals, with a spoon in their hands, a smile on their faces and love in their hearts.
“I feel great when someone says, ‘This was so good,’” said Linda Bushong, the director of Lunch with Luke. “I enjoy this. It’s a mission of the church. I think this program has been blessed. Every time it seems we have a need, it gets filled.”
Each meal served at Lunch with Luke is nutritionally balanced, featuring an entree, a vegetable, salad, fruit, bread, dessert, coffee and water. The meal program is operated by around 16 volunteers, who cook, serve and clean up.
The meal typically serves 60 to70 residents of Lititz and surrounding areas, no questions asked.
“They’re people from the community,” said Bushong. “We do have people who come here who are obviously in need of a meal, but I think a lot of them are looking for fellowship, and we provide a place where they can feel safe. Every week, we can interact with them,
frompg 1
and it’s blessings on each end. It’s worked out really well.”
Lunch with Luke is funded through grants and donations. Bushong characterized the program as “pretty self-sufficient” and said that it is not figured in as part of St. Luke’s overall operating budget.
“It’s free and it’s welcoming,” said Bushong. “And if someone comes to us with some sort of need, we can help them fill it. Sometimes they’ll want to talk to the pastor.”
St. Luke’s Wednesday meal program operates independently and is not officially associated with the Lancaster Community Meal Program, a loose collection of organizations and churches

When Jimenez met her husband, her life changed. She had been told she could not have children, but she prayed for a miracle because she saw how her husband loved children.
“That was the first miracle I ever prayed for and received,” said Jimenez, who eventually had five children.
In 2010, Jimenez and her family moved to Lancaster with the goal of making a fresh start, but Jimenez experienced flashbacks, nightmares, and migraines. Marital problems appeared. Jimenez prayed for God to bring her a friend she could confide in.
“God sent Brenda Green of Freedom Prayer Ministries and In the Light Ministries of Lancaster,” said Jimenez. Green worked in conjunction with a Christian doctor, and Jimenez responded positively to the treatment. “That combination … was so effective, I was healed in 2012,” Jimenez stated.
Green recognized Jimenez’s gift for teaching. Jimenez began to teach classes, eventually developing Sound Mind Awareness - based on the principles of repentance, renewal, reconnection, and retraining. In 2017, she began volunteering as a prison chaplain and branching into offering counseling by donation. She now teaches classes at ACTS Covenant Fellowship, 1927 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster. Her first online class will begin Wednesday, March 1. For information about Jimenez’s classes, readers may search for “Sound Mind Awareness” on Facebook or visit www.soundmind awareness.com.
