Lititz Day Of Prayer Service Scheduled This year’s Lititz Day of Prayer service will be presented by the Warwick Association of Church Women at Lititz Trinity Church, 44 E. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. The annual event is a community service of prayer.

Area residents are invited to attend and to bring friends and neighbors along.

This year’s featured speaker will be Trinity associate pastor Ryan Taylor.

Taylor, who has served the church since 1997, received his Master of Divinity from Evangelical Seminary in 2002.

An ordained elder in the Evangelical Congregational Church, Taylor is

passionate about teaching Scripture and discipling others. He has worked specifically with youths, leading several retreats and mission trips for teenagers and coaching basketball for many seasons at the Lititz recCenter. In addition to spending time with his family, Taylor enjoys sports, reading, and board games.

Special music for the service will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be provided by the Lititz Moravian Trombone Choir and the St. James Folk Group.

Fellowship and light refreshments will follow the service. Nursery care will be available for young children.

MHA Plans Annual Pasta Fundraiser Dance Collective To Present “Bring Into Being”

One of the reasons Mental Health America (MHA) marketing coordinator Charlotte Leckow works so hard gathering items for the live and silent auctions held during the organization’s annual pasta buffet is that the fundraiser helps support the work of Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHA, in area schools.

“Gretchen goes into classrooms to talk about mental health issues,” said Leckow.

“She talks about what depression is and

encourages (students) to be open about these topics and to support each other and to advocate for themselves.” The goal, according to Leckow, is to remove the stigma associated with mental health issues and help the students feel more comfortable discussing them.

On Friday, March 8, MHA will hold the fundraiser, now in its third decade, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster.

Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the live and silent auctions will begin at 6:45 p.m. Silent auction winners will be announced throughout the evening.

When Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, work together to create a dance concert, they consider who might be in the audience. “When we create a show, we think of the dad in the audience who may not understand it,” said Kline. “ We want them to leave entertained,” she added. “If they were entertained, we feel we have accomplished something.”

With that goal in mind, Kline and

Faller plan to present “Bring Into Being,” the debut dance concert that will showcase the style and aesthetic associated with their contemporary company. The pieces in the show, which will be presented on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, will all be choreographed by Kline and Faller. The pieces will be performed by 10 company dancers, two apprentices, and a few students of Kline and Faller.

Delegates to the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs will attend the quarterly Lancaster County Division meeting on Thursday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m.

The monthly coffee hour for retirees and seniors will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 11, as will the club’s semiannual full-course breakfast for all. The unofficial kickoff of the local yard sale season will take place on Saturday, March 2, when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host an indoor yard sale.

Shoppers are invited to search for bargains at the 20th annual event, which will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church’s fellowship hall.

“Spring starts soon after (our event), so we are the first ones in the yard sale circuit because we have it inside,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers, noting that a variety of goods will be available for sale. “People bring all kinds of stuff from clothing, books, puzzles and games to collectibles - you name it.”

Gray noted that more than 40 standholders will participate in the yard sale.

“Most are church members, but we also have friends in the community that come every year,” she said.

Proceeds from standholder donations and the food stand will help fund the activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class at Ruhl’s UMC. “We have four adult Sunday school classes, and that is one of them,” Gray explained. “We use (the proceeds) for our ministries and mission work. We support a Compassion (International) child and local missions in our church and local projects.”

The Sunshine Sunday school class also purchases Bibles that are distributed during the church’s clothing giveaway, God’s Clothing Closet, held annually in August.

“We have a senior citizens banquet that we fund every year that we host, (and) we pay for mulch and flowers for the church cleanup day in the spring,” Gray reported.

On Sundays, Ruhl’s UMC offers a traditional praise service at 8 a.m. and a 10:30 a.m. contemporary praise service. Sunday school is offered for all ages at 9:15 a.m.

Free parking will be available during the yard sale and the church is handicapped-accessible. All stands are already reserved. No pets or smoking are permitted inside the building.

Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, has planned a grand opening for its recently renovated restaurant space, called Hearth and Harrow, located in Pleasant View’s Town Square North building.

Hearth and Harrow will offer a restaurant, a bistro, a coffee bar, and an outdoor patio. At the center of the restaurant area is a hearth oven. Pleasant View’s goal is to partner with Lancaster County food vendors to bring the farm-to-table movement to the reitrement community.

The youth basketball season will wrap up with a youth 3-versus-3 basketball tournament on Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9. Girls and boys divisions for third and fourth grades, fifth and sixth grades, middle school, and high school players will be offered.

Teams consist of three to five players.

Tournament times are March 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. for high school players and March 9 from 9 a.m. to noon for elementary players. Dayspring Plans All-School Open House Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host an all-school open house on Thursday, March 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. Families will be able to tour the school and visit with teachers of every grade level and subject. Additionally, Dayspring will host a visitation day for prospective students on Wednesday, March 20.

Founded in 1987, Dayspring is one of 25 Principle Approach schools in America. Of those, Dayspring is one of five model demonstration schools. The classical method of education aims to equip students to develop a biblical worldview, as well as excellence in academics and character. It seeks to help students apply biblical truth to life.

According to headmaster and founder Dr. Mike Myers, the school also offers a P139 program, which provides learning support for students who test into the academically gifted level and those who have disabilities.

DCA offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including Lower School and Upper School sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, track, crosscountry, and golf. A partnership with McCaskey High School in Lancaster permits students to participate in all of

Myers asserted that Bream and Gowdy have “strong Christian testimonies.”

Attendees will be invited to submit questions for a question-and-answer session that will take place after the speakers’ presentations. Myers will serve as the facilitator, and Dayspring alumni Carley Evangelista Bilindabagabo, Class of 2009, and Matthew Valverde, Class of 2012, will assist in the dialogue.

Current students will also be part of the program. The choir will sing several selections, and during one song, the vocal group will be joined by alumna and soloist Julie Stone. Additionally, junior Joey Engle will deliver an oration, which he composed last year for a school competition.

“My oration is (on the topic that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). Why wouldn’t I be? This is God’s plan, (however). I’m delivering God’s message.”

The doors to the venue will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m. Two sets of tickets are available for purchase. One set includes dinner, and the other does not. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.dayspring christian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

Myers noted that there will be an opportunity for attendees to invest in the future of Dayspring at the event, but the Remember America Speaker Series is not primarily a fundraiser.

“It’s an extension of our mission,” Myers explained. “It’s an opportunity for us to speak into the community about the importance of the biblical foundation of our nation.”

Church Announces Music Programs the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will be presented by local jazz combo Paul Murr and the Snowflakes on Friday, Dec. 20. UZRC Recognizes Employees United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) honored nine employees during its annual Service Awards luncheon and dessert social on Jan. 30. The nine employees have invested more than 112 years of service between them. Lititz Garden Club will present a program on Thursday, March 7, at 6:45 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.

Phil Williams will talk about permaculture, which got its start more than 35 years ago in Australia. This environmentally conscious science is founded on three main ethical principles: care of the earth, care of people and return of surplus.

Williams is a permaculture consultant from North Lebanon Township in Lebanon County. He formerly owned a landscaping business in Virginia. His initial interest in organic farming was sparked when he and his wife, Denise, bought their 5.6-acre tract of land in

Pennsylvania in 2009. There they constructed an energy-efficient home with a solar panel system on the roof and other environment-friendly features. Phil also took permaculture design courses and began implementing his newfound knowledge on the property.

MCC To Hold Quilt Preview Shady Maple in East Earl, attendees voted on their favorites in five categories - best use of color, best pieced, best applique, best nontraditional, and people’s choice with winners receiving prizes. Winning blocks were sewn into individual wall hangings while many of the other submissions were made into sampler quilts. More than 150 blocks were submitted for the challenge.

During the preview, quilt viewers will be invited to vote for their favorite quilt by donating money. Each cent counts as one vote and goes toward the Pennsylvania Relief Sale’s My Coins Count collection.

This year’s collection will support MCC’s peacebuilding initiatives, which aim to give people the skills they need to work for peace and understanding, to speak out against injustices, and to build resilience through trauma healing.

Preview visitors can also shop Quilter’s Corner for fabric, linens, spools, and related items, as well as upcycled items crafted from repurposed materials by volunteers.

Used books and other contributed items will also be available for purchase by donation.

In addition, tours of the Material Resources Center warehouse will be offered. The warehouse serves as a collection point in the U.S. for the receiving, packing, and shipping of material resources donated by people responding to aid requests from MCC partners worldwide.

as a legislator; and jewelry will all be auctioned by Tim Keller. Themed baskets that will go up for bids may include a chocolate-lovers basket, a cookie making basket, a bird feeder basket, a bath and body basket, and a treasure chest basket.

MHA of Lancaster provides a variety of services, including support groups, community support programs, advocacy services, and peer education. Compeer Lancaster, a program of MHA, matches adults in the community in recovery from mental illness with a volunteer friend.

The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, also an MHA program, brings together community partners with individuals dedicated to reducing suicide rates. Other offerings include mental health screenings, a wellness program, and education services.

Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHA Lancaster, said that she is looking forward to the buffet because it brings a fun element to the work of the organization. “I love that this is a casual, fun event where all come together to support mental health and wellness in the community,” she stated. The organization hopes to raise $30,000 during the evening.

Tickets to the event are discounted for children ages 6 to 10, and children age 5 and under will be admitted for free.

Church To Present Bible Story Musical The next event in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church’s Musical Arts Concert Series will be a musical presented by the members of the church. The performance will take place on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary, with a reception to follow in the narthex. The church is located at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster.

This year, the families of St. Peter’s will present the story of Noah and the flood in “Noah’s RemARKable Voyage,” featuring words and music by John Folkening. The cast has been learning music and dialogue, choreographing dances, and rehearsing the production over the last couple of months.

St. Peter’s production includes original set pieces created by members of the St. Peter’s community and features the children and youths of the congregation.

This year’s show also includes a chance for the audience to participate.

This performance is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be received during intermission. Ten percent of the freewill offering will go to Music for Everyone, a nonprofit that raises awareness and resources to strengthen music education in local schools.

In addition to her duties with MHA, Gaudioso does much of the cooking for the pasta buffet. “We will have two kinds of pastas and offer meat and regular sauce,” said Gaudioso, who added that salad, as well as meat, sausage, and plain lasagnas, will also be on the menu, along with bread donated by a local bakery.

According to Kristin Labezius, assistant program director and intensive case manager with Community Services Group of MHA, volunteers of all ages will gather at the church on the evening of March 7 when the cooking begins. Gaudioso noted that 10 large chafing dishes of lasagna are prepared to feed about 300 guests, and Leckow added that nearly 40 volunteers coming from all professions will join in the effort.

The evening’s silent auction will include at least 100 items, including sports memorabilia, pottery, admissions to Rock Ford Plantation, tours and tastings, tickets to a summer concert series held in a vineyard, donations by local artists and craftspeople, and gift certificates for area eateries. “We have cleaning services, dental whitening treatments, (and) Hershey camping tickets, and we have participants who donate artwork as well,” said Leckow.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will hold a quilt preview from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Friday, March 1, as well as from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at MCC East Coast’s Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata. Admission is free. The preview will offer an opportunity to view the quilts slated for auction at the 63rd annual Pennsylvania Relief Sale. Thousands of hours have gone into creating the more than 100 quilts.

Unique to the preview this year will be quilts and wall hangings made from submissions to the Charity Block Design Challenge through The Old Country Store in Intercourse and Jaftex Corporation, a fabric manufacturer in New York City.

The Old Country Store won a Jaftex Facebook contest through the company’s CEO, Scott Fortunoff, and chose MCC and the Pennsylvania Relief Sale as the charity recipient. The store decided to hold an event, with Fortunoff as the main speaker, and paired it with the Charity Block Design Challenge, where registered participants received a mystery pair of fat-quarter fabrics beforehand from one of five featured designers from the corporation: Kaffe Fassett, Kim Diehl, Tula Pink, Tim Holtz, and William Morris. The corporation donated the fabrics.

Participants were then asked to use the two fabrics they received to create a 10.5-by-10.5-inch quilt block in any pattern. At an event on Nov. 29, 2018, at

Shreiner, Hnasko Compete in District Wrestling

Haydn Shreiner (145) and 170 pounder David Hnasko both represented the Warriors last weekend in the District Three 3A wrestling championship held at the Hersheypark Arena with Shreiner falling in the consolation bracket and Hnasko wrestling back to place fifth which places him as alternate to the upcoming PIAA championships.

With the top four in each weight class advancing, Hnasko could potentially make it to states should one of the four from District Three be disqualified for any reason. His path to fifth place was anything but easy and began with three-time District and PIAA champion Edmund Ruth of Susquehanna Township.

In that first round matchup Hnasko managed to avoid a pin, but like many before him who also fell to the perennial favorite, eventually succumbed to a 19-3 technical fall. In the consolations he racked up three straight wins with a fall over Daniel Boone’s Colby Pyle, an 8-2 decision over Darius Briggs of Milton Hershey and a 7-6 decision over Isaiah Auman from Cedar Crest before falling 8-0 to Tanner Schaller from Central York.

That loss set up his fifth-place victory over New Oxford’s Luke Larderello.

Shreiner, meanwhile, lost his opening round bout to Spring Grove’s Thomas Dressler via a third period fall

and dropped into the consolation bracket where he then defeated Exeter’s Connor Lender 5-4. In his next bout with Cedar Crest’s Christian Prestil, however, Shreiner came up short in an 11-1 defeat.

Both wrestlers used strong showings at the District Three sectional tournament in the week prior to Districts to earn their berths with Shreiner locking up a third-place finish and Hnasko finishing fourth with the top four from each weight class advancing. In addition, Roland McClune placed fifth at 195 pounds as did Haydn Benner at 220 while at 132 pounds, Mateo Chacon took sixth.

Using both an aggressive defense and a strong offensive effort, Manheim Township stopped the Warriors 69-58 in the L-L championship game that was played on Saturday, February 16 in Neffsville.

In that contest, Warwick’s normally potent long-distance game was held in check as the Warriors only connected on four three-pointers and trailed the Blue Streaks for almost the entirety of the night.

Township’s Tyler Crespo exploded for 26 points to lead both teams, while Joey McCracken (17) and Ryan Shirk (11) led in scoring for Warwick.

Falling behind 26-22 by halftime, Warwick tied things up at 34-34 near the end of the third quarter, but after a 12-4 run by the Streaks to end the frame, the Warriors faced an

eight-point deficit, trailing 46-38 to begin the fourth, and couldn’t find an answer in the 11-point loss.

Trysten George, Colby Martin, and Caleb Schmitz all scored eight apiece for Warwick, while Brock Fassnacht put up four and Conor Adams added two.

Three days later Warwick’s dream season officially ended when Central York defeated the Warriors 82-51 in the first round of the District Three 6A tournament. Unable to keep pace with the Panthers on offense and succumbing to a slow start in the first half, Warwick quickly fell behind 42-16 by halftime and despite putting up 35 points in the second half, were outscored by four points during that span.

BOWLING Warwick’s bowling team completed another successful regular season which ended in a Section Two title for the Warriors as they were able to edge out Elizabethtown in the final match of the year. Now, well on their way into the post-season, several individual bowlers have shown continued success through last week’s District Three Championship as well as helping the team to secure a League Title in the weeks prior.

Isaac Erickson has led the way for the boys all season and in the individual League championships held on Friday, February 15 he battled his way into the finals versus Kolby Bennet of Cedar Crest. As the number one seed

with a 1,950 total pinfall through nine preliminary games, Erickson waited through the three step ladder matches for Bennett who defeated Cameron Zwalley of Ephrata in the semifinals.

In the finals match against the second seeded Bennett, Erickson began with an open frame while Bennett opened with a strike which he turned into a string of four on his way to a 214-177 victory and the League crown. Tyler Miller finished sixth overall for the Warriors as well.

The L-L team championship took place the following Monday, February 19 at Cains Lanes in Manheim where a showdown between Warwick and Penn Manor, respectively coached by brothers Neal and Chris Vital, was almost inevitable. The two have faced off for the title the past three years, including this one, with the Comets taking the first two before Warwick was finally able to nab the crown with a 2-0 victory in the best of three format.

“Overall, it was a total team effort, with all five bowlers coming through in big moments throughout the day,” stated brother Neal who now has stature as top dog at the family table. Three years ago, he took over the reins at Warwick after coaching with his brother at Penn Manor where the two won three consecutive titles, and the friendly rivalry has been alive ever since.

Down 0-1 after dropping the first game 1029-1013, Sham (247) and Erickson (232) led the charge in the second for a 1015-897 Warrior victory, forcing a third game where Carter Snavely (233) helped put them over the top, 1026-981 against a top rival. “We finished second to Cedar Crest in the last four tournaments we bowled. They have a very strong team, and it was a big relief to clear that hur-

dle and get that monkey off our backs,” commented Vital.

In the final, both teams struggled to maintain consistency but it was a strong ending by Erickson (202) in the first game that helped put Warwick in the driver’s seat with a 922-907 advantage.

“The first game went down to the last bowler on each team,” noted Vital.

“Penn Manor’s anchor bowler suffered a very bad break on his first ball, leaving the 10 pin and Isaac Erickson’s spare sealed the win.”

With both sides scores dropping in

the second game, no bowler topped 200, it was Warwick that prevailed with an 852-778 result that gave them the longawaited title. “Game two saw both teams succumb to the pressure of the moment, and the challenging lane conditions, stated Vital. “Again, seniors Sham, Lutz and Erickson came through in the end to secure the championship.

This past Saturday marked the District Three tournament held at ABC Lanes North in Harrisburg and those three seniors showed that they

deserved to be there as Sham finished second in the girl’s individuals and Lutz and Erickson placed second and third, respectively, in the boy’s competition.

Sham rolled a combined total of 1212 in the six qualifying games to finish as the fourth seed with the top six advancing into the step-ladder formatted championship brackets. Once there, she first faced off with Central Dauphin’s Desiree Dent in the quarterfinals whom she topped 196-173 to reach the semifinals against the number one seeded Paige

Boyd of Cedar Crest.

Taking advantage of an average game by Boyd, Sham left no doubt as she blasted through to the championship match with a 234-175 result. In her finals appearance, she took on number two seed Charlize Wanner of Muhlenberg who topped her by a score of 256-207.

Both Erickson and Lutz finished near the top of the boy’s preliminaries with respective scores of 1309 and 1265 with Erickson securing the number two seed and Lutz the third spot. Meanwhile, teammates Carter

Kehler, of Manheim, was previously director of dining services at Foxdale Village in State College as well as regional operations support manager for multiple senior living accounts in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He has been employed with Sodexo for more than 12 years. He previously served as managing partner for Avado Brands in Altoona.

Kehler graduated from Hollidaysburg High School

According to Faller, “Bring Into Being” is designed to introduce Emme Dance Collective to the community. Kline noted, “We thought we’d create a show that (demonstrates to the audience) who we are … as artists and as choreographers.” The show will include a mixture of new pieces and those created in the recent past.

Kline pointed out that the nine pieces that will be included in the show will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques that pull from modern dance. “I would describe it as moving in the moment,” she said, adding that the music will be current and contemporary and even include lyrics.

Faller added, “We try not to use music that is mainstream or recognizable because we’re trying to create something new, fresh, and different.”

Kline noted that dances for the familyfriendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. Costuming will include a variety of earth tones and jewel tones, and Faller described the dances as quick moving and engaging.

“Our choreography could be described as colorful and upbeat,” said Kline.

Faller and Kline, who first met when they attended school together in Manheim Township School District at the age of 6, both took lessons at a local dance

Triathlon Training Classes Slated Orchestra To Perform Works By Wagner Hempfield recCenter’s 2019 TRI for Life triathlon will take place on Sunday, April 28. The annual sprint triathlon event will feature a 300-meter indoor swim, a 16-mile bike ride with rolling hills, and a 3-mile run on a relatively flat course.

The top male and female finishers will receive cash prizes, and awards will also be given to the top three age-group finishers and top three relay finishers.

Individuals and relay teams that sign up before Sunday, March 31, will receive discounted entry fees. Registration is through www.active.com.

Individuals who are interested in attempting a triathlon but would like guidance with training and conditioning are invited to take part in the rec center’s PEAK TRI Training Sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. Attendees will receive customized training and handson coaching and will also learn about proven race strategies. Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present a concert titled “Ride of the Valkyries” on Saturday, March 2, at 3 and 8 p.m. at the historic Fulton Theatre, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The program will be the fourth concert of the LSO’s 72nd season.

The predominantly Wagnerian program will feature “The Ride of The Valkyries.” The piece is the prelude to Act III of “Die Walküre” (“The Valkyrie”), the second of the four operas by Wagner that constitute “Der Ring des Nibelungen” (“The Ring of the Nibelung”). Commonly known as “The Ring,” the opera cycle is based on a Norse saga focusing on a magical golden ring and the history of a family of gods. “The Ring” began as a single opera focusing on the death of Siegfried, and it expanded as Wagner worked to combine literature, theater and music into a total artwork. Production took place from 1848 to 1874.

The program will also include Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll,” known as a musical love letter to his second wife, Cosima Wagner. It was a combined Christmas and birthday gift to her, as well as a celebration of the recent birth of their son, Siegfried, nicknamed Fidi. Wagner did not originally intend for “Siegfried Idyll” to be performed publicly, but he decided to sell the score to the publisher B. Schott in

In addition to the works by Wagner, the LSO will present Dmitri Shostakovich’s first concerto, the Concerto in C Minor for Piano, Trumpet and Strings. Shostakovich wrote the piece with the intention of performing it himself to showcase his strengths as a pianist. LSO’s performance of the piece will showcase pianist Asiya Korepanova and LSO principal trumpet player Luis Engelke.
