Art Of Recycle Flourishes In Ephrata Garden Club

When asked how she came to found the Art of Recycle in Ephrata with her husband, Josh Myers, art director Chelas Montanye quickly replied, “It (was) totally by accident.” The story of the founding of the arts entity, which has a goal of healing and growing the community, involves an undiagnosed medical condition, the inspiration to hold life drawing sessions, and teachers asking for free school supplies. While the story arguably has more twists and turns than a crime mystery, it is all true.

Montanye’s foray into the world of art began when she attended the Art Institute of Atlanta in Georgia for graphic design in the 1990s. Living in an area where many of her neighbors spoke Spanish, Montanye began to learn the language. When she was See Art Of Recycle pg 6

Concert Series To Feature “Paul And Friends” The Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series, named for a longtime Highland Presbyterian Church music director, is held at Highland, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. The series presents four concerts each year. According to current Highland music ministry director Paul Thorlakson, the series kicks off each fall with an organ concert. A second concert is held near Christmas, a third concert is held in the spring, and the choir and an orchestra perform a major work in June.

The Lititz Garden Club will welcome Barry Witmer of Donegal Trout Unlimited on Thursday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.

Witmer will present “Why Gardeners Should Care,” which will address the scope of water pollution in Lancaster County, the major causes of pollution, invasive species, and how gardeners can be better stewards of land and water resources.

After his retirement, Witmer joined Donegal Trout Unlimited (DTU) in 2015 to volunteer with the organization’s many coldwater conservation projects. His initial involvement was supporting DTU’s tree nursery at Millport Conservancy. He also joined the DTU board of directors as the fundraising chair, a position he has See Garden Club pg 5

LCHS from pg 1 Both plays will be presented at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, by a cast of 30 students on Thursday through Saturday, March 19 through 21, at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday, March 22. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will open the show with a 40-minute presentation, followed by the 90-minute “Joseph.”

“The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” is based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis. The plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Alexis Lenhart; Edmund, played by Xavier LeFevre; Susan, played by Maddi Lewis; and Peter, played by Jacob Fertal. The children have been removed from London as part of a wartime evacuation to the countryside home of a friend of their parents. The presentation begins with Lucy, the youngest sibling, opening a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch, portrayed by Natalie Knox, who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Peyton Sheaffer. A battle, for which Wagner has brought in fight choreographer Dan Burke, ensues as the children venture with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler.

LCHS students recently became International Thespian Society Troupe 8880, and student director Aria Yang will be at the helm for “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Wagner noted that video projection has been added to the backdrop and that she is especially impressed with the makeup that will be used to portray

the animals.

“Joseph,” created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a musical based on the Genesis account of Joseph, played

by Kameron Garcia. The son of Jacob, played by Jim Mikulski, Joseph rises to prominence from slavery in Egypt. Narrators will include Bernadette Fertal, Katie Lyle, Sheridan Riva, and Isabelle Titzer.

Pharaoh will be played by Oliver Klemmer and Potiphar by Xavier LeFevre. The sungthrough musical is similar to a rock opera.

Although the musical styles vary, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ’n’ roll, Wagner said that the music is not difficult.

Challenges of staging the show have included the fast-paced and nearly constant choreography, including a children’s chorus of 23 made up of students from area Catholic elementary schools, and adding the special effects to make the show feel more like a rock concert. Challenges for members of the ensemble include playing multiple roles, where they have to develop their own personalities for their characters, which Wagner said really adds fun for the audience.

Wagner said she had wanted to do “Joseph” for some time for several reasons. “It has a great story and theme of forgiveness,” she said. “You can really play with the quirky characters of all the brothers.” She hopes that audience members will leave feeling uplifted by the messages of both stories. “I hope they walk away singing the songs from ‘Joseph,’” she said.

More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting.

The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred.

Many LCCTC students competed in the district-level competitions at Franklin County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category.

by Highland following a worship and mission enhancement campaign that raised $400,000. “This will be the first Dorothy Rose Smith Concert that features that piano,” said Thorlakson.

In addition to Thorlakson’s piano solos, Hall-Gulati noted that saxophone music and opera will be part of the mix. “(The concert) will be stylistically diverse,” said Thorlakson. “There will be some musical theater and art song.” The musicians said to expect up to eight numbers including piano and clarinet duets, piano and voice, and piano and voice and clarinet.

Thorlakson credited Dorothy Rose Smith with building the musical program at Highland. “When she passed away, the people at Highland decided to start a concert series,” he said, noting that the series is supported by a number of patrons. He believes the tradition of kicking off with a fall organ concert is based on the church’s purchasing a new organ in the fall at about the time the series began.

Exploring, Growing Together, a forum learning series at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, will offer a Very Beginners Knitting Class in March. The classes will feature four sessions from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 3, 10, 17 and 31.

The class will be an introduction to knitting. The instructor will be Barbara Elliott.

Participants will learn basic knitting skills, including knit, purl, increase and decrease.

A gauge swatch and a small project incorporating new skills will be completed.

The class will be limited to 10 people and registration began on Feb. 11. Registration will be in person. Phone and online registration will not be accepted.

Students will need to purchase their own supplies for the class and will receive a materials list at the time of registration.

Elliott, of Lititz, is a graduate of Mansfield University, with a Bachelor of Science in home economics education. She has been knitting since childhood and spinning for 37 years. Elliott owned and operated a knitting, spinning and weaving store where she taught classes in all three disciplines. She has demonstrated on a sheep-to-shawl team and holds membership in several local guilds. She currently mentors several knitting groups and also gives private instruction.

Thorlakson, who has been directing at Highland for a few years, was asked by concert organizers if he would put together a concert. “I said, ‘Yes, but I would like to bring some friends along with me,’” he said, noting that he and Hall-Gulati have been friends for quite some time. “Abbigail and Jeffrey are new friends (of mine) because they just came to Lancaster a few weeks ago,” said Thorlakson, who introduced Jeffrey as a new professor at Lancaster Bible College. Jeffrey and Abbigail met at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute when they were assigned the same opera to study. “…

And the rest is history,” said Jeffrey.

“Music brought us together.”

The group is looking forward to playing together at Highland. “Highland’s acoustics are wonderful,” said Hall-Gulati.

Thorlakson echoed her comments, saying that it will be a good venue for the concert, which he called a “potpourri (of music) heavier on the romantic side.” As a

Humankind Water sells bottled water, organic tea, and lemonade with a greater purpose in mind: funding clean water projects for people around the world. “We exist to get people clean drinking water,” stated Meg Foltz. She serves as vice president of marketing for Humankind and as director of missions for the kindHuman Foundation, the nonprofit organization set up in conjunction with the company specifically to provide wells or water filtration or rain catchment systems to communities where people desperately need it.

One hundred percent of net profits from Humankind sales goes toward funding clean water projects. Foltz explained that every bottle of Humankind Water that is purchased helps make it possible to get clean water to one person for 100 days. “Similarly, every gallon of our lemonade and tea that is sold gets 50 gallons of clean drinking water to people in need,” Foltz noted.

Based in Manheim, Humankind is actively involved in projects in Uganda and the Dominican Republic and has worked in Malawi, Tanzania, India, and Haiti in the past. Humankind has also provided clean water as part of disaster relief efforts in locations including Nepal, Texas, and Flint, Mich. “While our focus is primarily in meeting international needs, we are more than happy to help locally as needed,” commented Foltz.

For the past four years, the kindHuman Foundation has hosted a fundraising event for the public, but this year organizers have upped the ante and are hosting not one, but two fundraisers, themed “Made For This,” at locations in Lancaster County and Philadelphia.

People will be treated to entertainment

by celebrity sand artist Joe Castillo, who appeared on season seven of “America’s Got Talent.” Castillo will present an artistic interpretation of a life impacted by the efforts of kindHuman. Foltz shared that organizers chose the theme “Made For This” because it speaks to the purpose and ability of all people to be difference makers and impact the world together.

The Lancaster event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim.

In addition to entertainment by Castillo, the evening will include an open bar and a buffet dinner catered by Simply From Scratch. Signature cocktails incorporating Humankind beverages will also be served at the bar.

The Philadelphia event is planned for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Merion Tribute House, 625 Hazelhurst Ave., Merion Station. Attendees in Philadelphia will experience the same format and entertainment as those at the Lancaster event, with a catered meal from Catering by Rich.

asked to help translate at construction sites, she became fluent in Spanish construction terms. Around 2001, Montanye moved to Asheville, N.C., where she met an architect who offered to teach her what she needed to know to work with masonry companies fabricating building facades. She learned to read plans and began traveling around the country to job sites. After moving to Maryland in 2005, she attended Hagerstown Community College in hopes of learning better ways to help her son, who has developmental differences. In 2007, she moved to an area outside Washington, D.C., where she discovered a town filled with art galleries.

“They had First Fridays,” she recalled.

“You could just walk into a studio, and there would be a model, and you could just sit and sketch. As an artist, I just loved it. It was therapeutic for me.”

In 2008, at an art festival, she met Myers, whom she affectionately calls “Nobie” because he likes to be known as Mr. Nobody Special. “We immediately connected,” said Montanye, who moved to Ephrata, where Myers was living, and took a job helping to build the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. It was at this time that her undiagnosed medical problems became an issue. Instead of driving to Philadelphia to work, she decided to go back to her artistic roots, renting a 10-by-10-foot booth in a Lancaster co-op and later moving to the Stahr Armory. She and Myers began holding art classes.

“I started having life drawings, and we would get 30 or 40 people at these workshops,” Montanye said. Working with a ballet school, she was able to have models hold ballet poses for artists to draw.

“They were gorgeous,” recalled Montanye. “I had never seen a life drawing workshop where there were ballet

dancers doing poses.”

In 2012, the first Art of Recycle opened at 27 N. State St., Ephrata. “We taught children’s and adult art workshops,” Montanye said. “We had a craft castle, and after school, children would come and we would have games, snacks, and crafts for them. It was a lot of fun.”

The store sold donated art supplies, which attracted teachers from urban areas who asked for supplies for free. “If (students) come in without (pens and pencils), they can’t do any schoolwork,” said Montanye, who learned that many teachers were purchasing supplies with their own money. She told the teachers to take what they needed. As word started to spread, she opened a Free Teacher Resource Area, now located in the basement of the current Art of Recycle at 27 Cloister Ave., Ephrata.

Because the Art of Recycle is dedicated to raising the sense of community, people are welcome to volunteer or take part in activities that encourage socialization.

“Anyone with a disability is welcome,” said Montanye, who noted that area organizations that aid those with special needs visit the store and senior centers bring memory care patients for classes.

Injured workers volunteer at the center as part of their recovery program.

A variety of free clubs meet in the evenings, and classes, workshops, teas, and a variety of other activities are offered for a nominal cost.

Precompetitive swim lessons will be offered for children ages 5 to 14 in March and April. Experienced swimmers and coaches will provide instruction. The Lancaster County Conservation District is planning its 46th annual tree seedling sale. All trees and perennials are preordered, and orders are due Monday, March 9. Orders will be ready for pickup during a one-day distribution on Wednesday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The tree sale order list includes conifers and evergreens that would make a good wind break, hardwoods that offer shade and wildlife food and cover, as well as groundcover and pollinator-friendly perennials.

Some new selections are offered on this year’s list. Descriptions and photographs illustrating full-grown species are provided with the order form at www.lancaster conservation.org. Order forms may also be requested by phone at 717-299-5361, ext 5.

structure, with two water slides, two diving boards, and a floating lily pad walk also planned. The wading pool for young children was retained and expanded to also have a zero-entry area. The competition lap pool remains and will be in use by Lititz Springs Waverunners for the summer swim meet season.

Large trees and the lawn have been retained, and shade structures will be added. The poolside pavilion will be available for daytime rental use. Bathhouses have been fully renovated and now include a separate family/handicappedaccessible changing and shower room.

Concessions will not be offered at the pool, but vending options will be provided and patrons may bring food.

Lititz Springs Pool will be open daily from noon to 8 p.m. Season passes will be available for purchase beginning Sunday, March 1, at the center, as well as online or by calling the center. Daily guest passes will be available at the pool gate when the pool is open. Warwick Hoop Teams Fall in District Openers

Warwick’s boys’ basketball team ran through a stellar season, one in which the Warriors claimed a Section Two title, made it to the L-L League championship final and qualified for the District Three AAA Class 6 tournament. Unfortunately, a shortage of manpower led to the end of Warwick’s run as they lost to Governor Mifflin 77-70 in double overtime of their first round match up.

With lead scorer Joey McCracken done for the season, the Warriors received unexpected help from the bench in the form of Chase Yarberough and Chase Krall while Conor Adamas, Kai Cipalla, and Tate Landis continued to roll on leading up to last Tuesday’s showdown with the Mustangs. In a game where the Warriors led by nine at halftime and had three players with double digit scoring, in the end it was a lack of depth that hurt them. Both Yarberough, who had 24 points, and Landis fouled out in the second overtime period as Governor Mifflin outscored them 11-4 to seal the victory.

After cutting Warwick’s lead to six at the end of the third quarter, the Mustangs, who were led by Bryce Harman (26) and Greg Suber (19), went on a 17-11 run in the fourth to force the extra time. Along with Yarberough, Adams (14) and Cipalla (13) helped fuel the Warriors on offense as well with Cipalla’s lone three-point shot tying the game at 66-66 to close out the first OT. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Just as the boys had their season put to rest, so too, did the lady Warriors at the hands of Red Lion in their opening round of districts. While Warwick led briefly in the first quarter, the fifth seeded Lions quickly took over the game and never looked back on the way to a 52-29 victory.

Struggling against a well stacked Red Lion team, the Warriors were outscored 29-14 in the first half and 23-15 in the second. Lauren Pyle put up a team high 11 points and drained two from long distance and was 5-8 from the line.

WRESTLING Five Warriors made the trip to Spring Grove High School over the weekend to take part in the District Three Championships with the hopes of qualifying for the PIAA tournament to be held in two weeks. Out of the five, only two reached the medal stand as Haydn Shreiner at 152 pounds and Matt Woolley at 220 both placed sixth but neither will advance as only the top four wrestlers make the cut.

Shreiner, who forfeited his fifthplace bout on Saturday, faced adversity right out of the gate with a round of 16 loss to South Western’s Ethan Baney via first period fall which dropped him into the consolation round. He rebounded well, however, putting together consecutive falls over Robert Rodgers from Red Land and Cedar Crest’s Jeremie Prograis to reach the consi-quarters where he pieced together a 13-2 major decision of Sam Druck from Dallastown to get to the consi-semis and one win away from punching his ticket to states.

Waiting for him was a familiar face in Baney who also wrestled back into a position to advance. Looking to return the favor from their first meeting, Shreiner turned a late takedown in the first period into near fall points and took a 5-0 lead into the second.

Unfortunately, Baney was able to escape and hit a five-point maneuver to tie things up heading into the second.

From there on out it was all Baney as he hit a reversal and three near fall points to go up 10-5 before scoring a takedown in the third and earning a late fall to end Shreiner’s chances of extending his season.

Woolley pinned his way into the semifinals beginning with Cocalico’s Jacob Humphrey whom he finished off in the first period to reach the quarter finals where Layton Schmick of Carlisle was waiting. After surrendering a takedown to start the bout, Woolley was able to hit a reversal, putting Schmick straight to his back and recording the fall at the 1:07 mark.

state tournament appearance, but proved too much for him to handle as the Spartan took him to his back for the fall in 1:12. With one more opportunity to make the cut, Woolley squared off with Cumberland Valley’s Dontey Rogan in the consi-semis but was unable to mount any offense as Rogan ran out to a 5-0 lead before recording the fall in 3:18. Woolley then succumbed to Chambersburg’s Wyatt Hull who scored a quick fall in their fifth place bout.

(138), and Hayden Benner (285) also competed in the tournament, though none were able to earn medals. Both Heffner and Woolley dropped their round of 16 bouts before rebounding with win in the first round of consolations and then bowing out in the second round. Benner lost his round of 16 bout and was eliminated in the first round of consolations.

While the round began well for both bowlers, neither Miller who finished 10th with a 1232 series and led the field after two games, nor Snavely who was 31st with a 1024 were able to hold steady. “Both Tyler and Carter, who had a solid 208 first game, got off to good starts,” said coach Neal Vital.

“A bad second game led to Carter’s downfall and Tyler hung tough the last four games, but the quality of the district field overtook him as he couldn’t muster any games over 190.”

Next up is the Eastern Regionals singles and team championships with Dutch Lanes hosting the girls’ individuals and Leisure Lanes the boys’ this Friday while the team competition will take place on Saturday at Leisure.

The second session will provide an introduction to the Stephen Series, a system of lay caring ministry through which congregation leaders can equip members to provide oneto-one Christian care to people in need. Since 1975, more than 13,000 congregations representing more than 170 denominations have implemented the Stephen Series.

Since 1986, more than 50 members of Palm have undertaken 50 hours of training to

become Stephen Ministers. Palm usually has an average three to five active Stephen Ministers at any given time. Each meets weekly with someone who is experiencing a life crisis or challenge, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, hospitalization, the loss of a job, loneliness, or relocation.

“Being a Stephen Minister has been a blessing to me,” said Kitty Wolf, Stephen Minister and Leader for over 20 years. “I have grown so much spiritually through the experience of seeing God work through me to touch the lives of my care receivers.”

The final session of the workshop will focus on “How to Care in a Distinctively Christian Way.” Participants will learn what makes Christian caregiving unique and how they can use resources like prayer, blessings, and Scripture in their caring for others.

Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra, will host a Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and refreshments will be served.

The half-day workshop consists of three sessions designed both to enhance participants’ caregiving skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry.

“The needs for ongoing care in congregations and communities are often much more than pastors can handle alone,” said pastor Carl Rabbe, one of four Stephen Leaders who oversee Palm’s Stephen Ministry. “Palm has been enrolled in Stephen Ministry for over 30 years and has been equipping our members to provide quality one-to-one Christian care for decades.”

The workshop is sponsored by Stephen Ministries, a St. Louis-based Christian organization that has been providing congregations with training and resources for Christian caregiving since 1975. The workshop will be led

by Kathy Hollenbeck, a trained Stephen Minister and Leader. Since 2012, Hollenbeck has been a member of the staff at the Stephen Ministries Center in St. Louis, where she is a key member of the operations team. She communicates with pastors and lay leaders, conducting research and providing consultation for their ministry needs. Prior to joining Stephen Ministries, she, along with her husband and three sons, ministered in Uganda in East Africa for more than 10 years.

Women’s Club Will Award Grants The Women’s Club of Manheim has announced its 2020 grant program. The club will award grants of up to $1,000 to nonprofit organizations serving Manheim and the Manheim community. The Women’s Club of Manheim, which began in 1937, is an organization of Manheim women committed to friendship, community service and civic responsibility. The club is a nonprofit organization that contributes more than $10,000 a year to the Manheim community. Projects funded in the past include the Manheim Library Summer Reading Program, Secret Santa gifts for children, Aaron’s Acres, Manheim Central Post Prom, Manheim Food Pantry, scholarships for Manheim Central senior girls, Manheim Central Elementary Run For Fitness, Manheim banners, Pleasant View bingo and activities for residents at the Danner Home.

Artist To Display Work At Library During the month of March, Jane Wolf, a member of the Lititz Art Association, will display a selection of her artwork at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road.

Wolf is an acrylic mixed media artist who creates semi-abstract to abstract explorations of pure color and texture. She enjoys the process of layering and letting the paintings unfold intuitively. She taught art for 25 years in the School District of Lancaster.

The mission of the Lititz Art Association is to foster and promote the fine arts and to cooperate with other organizations sharing similar purposes. Membership is open to all adults with an appreciation for the fine arts. Guests are always welcome to attend the programs held at the library.

The public is welcome to view the display of artwork during the library’s normal hours of operation.

Historical Society Plans Meeting The East Petersburg Historical Society will hold its first public meeting of the year on Monday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in the East Petersburg Community Building, 6051 Pine St. The guest speaker will be Allegra Sensenig, who will discuss her ancestors, the members of the Brubaker-Sensenig family, who lived on Stevens Street in the borough. Sensenig will share her genealogical research and her collection of early family photos during the program.
