LADIES’ LUNCHEON

The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will host a luncheon at noon on Wednesday, March 6, at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. CHICKEN CORN SOUP

Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will host a homemade chicken corn soup sale on Saturday, Feb. 23. Preorders may be picked up between 9 and 11 a.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, with soup available from 10 a.m. until sold out. Freshly made soup featuring the previous summer’s corn may be purchased by the pint or quart, and containers will be supplied. Preorders can be made by calling the church office at 717-560-0321.

BENEFIT BREAKFAST

The Baron Stiegel Lions Club of Clay and Elizabeth Townships will hold a buffet breakfast and soup and barbecue sale on Sunday, March 3, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brickerville Fire Hall, located on Hopeland Road at Route 322. The all-you-can-eat meal will feature a large selection of breakfast items for a set fee, with children able to eat for half-price. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Lifetree Cafe is hosted at The General Sutter Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz, every Monday at 7 p.m. Lifetree is a weekly program that involves friendly conversations about various topics. When Personal Tragedy Doesn’t Make Sense,” will feature an original film depicting the true story of Thomas Vander Woude, who found his son struggling for his life after a backyard accident. WEF Schedules Annual Movie Night The Lititz community is invited to attend the Warwick Education Foundation’s (WEF) 12th annual Family Movie Night at Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

Showings will be held at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Family Movie Night is offered to area residents to provide family and friends with a chance to gather and enjoy a recently released movie at a nominal cost.

This year’s feature, which is rated PG, will be “How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World,” which is the third installment in the film series, based on the books by Cressida Cowell. In the latest story, main characters Hiccup and Toothless have rescued captured dragons and brought them to Berk, resulting in the island becoming overpopulated with dragons. To solve the problem, Hiccup wants to find a safe

place for dragons known as the “Hidden World.” Unfortunately, dragon hunter Grimmel is out to capture Toothless and discover the Hidden World before Hiccup can. According to Karen Horst, Family Movie Night chair, the movie was chosen because WEF organizers believed it would appeal to all family members.

Funds raised by Family Movie Night will help support the WEF Innovative Education and Expert in Residence grant programs, which are intended to enrich education opportunities for students in the Warwick School District.

The spring 2019 term of the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning at Landis Homes began with a kickoff reception on Jan. 31. More than 200 persons participated in the event, which was held at Calvary Church.

Pathways advisory board chair Richard Cook, who has also been a student and instructor, served as moderator for the short program. Following the opening remarks, class instructors and class titles were introduced by Landis Homes resident and Pathways board member Judy Sargent. The new Pathways Institute catalogs were distributed, and attendees were able to visit instructors at display tables around the room and begin registering for classes.

The more than 40 courses and learning opportunities, which will run from March through May, are open to all people age 55 and up who are residents of Lancaster County or neighboring counties. New class topics include “The Code Girls of WWII,” “Medical Choices of the 21st Century: Taking Charge of Your Health,” “The Underground Railroad in Lancaster County,” “Telescopic Viewing of the Night Sky” and multiple classes on nature, history and religion.

LEFC was started in the late 1970s by a group of Lancaster Bible College professors. The first official meeting was held in the Neffsville Fire Hall in 1980. The congregation later moved to the Lititz Rec Center and then purchased the Rome Mill Restaurant, now known as The Mill, in

1985. Ten years later, LEFC dedicated a new building at the current site on Pierson Road, across the street from The Mill.

Since then, several expansions have been completed. According to senior pastor Tony Hunt, the new expansion is scheduled to be finished and in use by Easter of 2020.

The Towne Club of Lancaster will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, at 1 p.m. Bill Rhoads, pianist and vocalist, will present “Oldies and Goodies.”

In addition, the Towne Club of Lancaster will accept applications for its vocational and technical school scholarships. The club will award scholarships to high school seniors who plan to pursue a postsecondary education as fulltime students at any accredited vocational/technical institution offering a two-year program.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need. The number and amount of the scholarships will be determined by the availability of funds raised through benefits held by the club during the year.

Scholarship applications are available at high school counseling offices or by calling Judy George at 717-808-5897.

Completed applications for the 2018-19 school year must be received by Friday, March 15.

The Lancaster Italian Cultural Society will offer Italian language classes this spring. The classes will be taught by Fiorella Spidaliere, a native-born Italian speaker who has an extensive background in teaching Italian to adults and children. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, March 5 to April 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster.

The classes are casual and will introduce students to the basics of the language. Students will learn greetings, pleasantries, terms relating to menus that can be used while dining in restaurants, shopping terms, directions, important words to know in Italian, and some basic grammar.

There is a cost to participate.

Members will receive a discount.

Lancaster Evangelical Free Church (LEFC) held a groundbreaking celebration on Feb. 10. The congregation cheered as temporary modular buildings were demolished to prepare the way for a significant expansion. The modular buildings housed the church office and other ministries for more than two decades.

The vision behind the expansion is called Creating Space/Expecting Harvest.

In addition to new office space, LEFC will add a 1,100-seat worship space, a large lobby, secure classrooms and large gathering spaces for children, a youth ministry space, additional classrooms for adults and community groups, and a permanent baptistry.

Warwick Released Time (WRT) teachers and John R. Bonfield Elementary students who are part of the WRT program are preparing for an open house and student program on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at Lititz Moravian Church, Church Square, Lititz. WRT students are asked to arrive at 6:45 p.m.

The theme for the open house is “Joy - Faith, Fun, Friends,” based on John 15:11-12. All are invited to see WRT students as they share what they are learning through the WRT program.

Second-graders from Warwick School District and their families are especially invited to attend since they are eligible for WRT classes next school year.

They will receive a small gift. The event will include a time to visit the classrooms.

The group singing will be led by Dori Resch and will include the songs “Love the Lord Your God” and “God Is Watching Over You.” Resch practices each week on the bus with the students as she escorts them to class.

“Soup And Story” Series Slated Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians, 29 Green Acre Road, Lititz, will host Soup and Story: Stories of Resilience, a fiveweek process to help attendees write their sacred story. The program will be offered on Tuesdays, Feb. 26 to March 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Soup and bread will provided on Feb. 26. For the remainder of the evenings, participants will be asked to provide soup and bread; groups can do this together.

The series will focus on helping participants rewriting their life stories in ways that illustrate God’s presence in their experiences. As they write, they will consider the function of story as a gift used to create and maintain a relationship with God. Jane Clark, who has a doctorate in English composition and linguistics and a Master of Arts in spiritual formation/spiritual direction, will facilitate the process.

“Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. When Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins

Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.”

Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said. “There are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically.

The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig. Students mention “Put on a Happy Face,” “Honestly Sincere,” “The Telephone Hour,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” as standout numbers.

Schnabel noted that he hopes to see audiences enjoying the show. “With a musical like ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ (you can) a bring your (children) and parents (because it’s) fun for the whole family,” he said, adding, “It’s fun for the cast (too).”

Warwick Tops Blazers, Falcons in LL Playoffs

Go big or go home. Warwick’s boys’ basketball team is certainly claiming that as their mantra in a season for the ages, or at least the past three decades. That is how long the Warrior’s drought of not winning a single game of the L-L League tournament ran, but the dam burst Wednesday night when Joey McCracken’s coast-to-coast layup barely fell through the net before the final buzzer sounded on Warwick’s

64-62 quarterfinal victory over Lancaster Mennonite.

Playing on their home court, the Warriors trailed by seven after the first quarter before shaving one point of that deficit by halftime where they trailed 25-19. But whatever transpired in the locker room during the break brought out an inspired McCracken who was held scoreless in the first half but opened up for 17 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the foul line, in the second to lead the team.

With the score tied and Lancaster Mennonite controlling the final seconds of the game, the Blazer’s Elijah Terry, with McCracken contesting, put up a three-point shot with only seven seconds remaining. Standing in the key, McCracken gathered the resulting rebound of Terry’s failed attempt and with just under six seconds showing on the clock dribbled the length of the court to deliver the game winner.

Warwick followed a lackluster first half, in which the Warriors only scored eight points in the second quarter, with 22 in the third and 23 in the fourth. Brock Fassnacht tallied 16 followed by Colby Martin and Ryan Shirk who each scored nine, Trysten George with seven and Conor Adams, Caleb Schmitz, and Broden Price contributing two apiece.

With that win, the Warriors advanced to Thursday’s semifinal matchup against Cedar Crest at Conestoga Valley. Playing the late game following Manheim Township’s 63-52 victory over Elizabethtown,

Warwick continued its winning ways with a definitive 72-47 win over the Falcons to earn a finals showdown with the Blue Streaks which was played on Saturday following press time.

The trio of Martin (16), Fassnacht (13) and McCracken (12) led the Warriors who jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. With a barrage of treys raining down on them, 11 to be exact, the Falcons couldn’t find traction and wilted under Warwick’s offensive attack as its top three scorers accounted for nine of those three-pointers alone.

A strong second half, in which they held a 39-21 advantage, helped cement the Warrior’s dominant effort as did a solid showing by Warwick’s bench in a total team effort. George, Adams, and Kai Cipalla all tallied seven points each, while Shirk and Schmitz each had five.

Neighbors Group To Meet

Art Association To Meet Jef Kaufhold will be the presenter for the Lititz Art Association meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Kaufhold will discuss “Using an ‘Off-Color’ in Painting.� The program is free and open to the public.

Kaufhold has been drawing and painting since high school. While most of his professional career has been spent pursuing technical careers as a draftsman, a technician, an engineer, a teacher, a network administrator, and a manager, he found creative fulfillment in his spare time through acting, singing, dancing, set design, and building in local theater.

He now paints and draws in watercolor, oil, and charcoal.

Kaufhold’s formal training began with private lessons with Dorothy Hollinger, an East Petersburg artist. He ended up pursuing a minor in art at Millersville University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Bachelor of Art in mathematics education from Millersville University. He has shown his work at local venues and outdoor art shows.

The purpose of the Lititz Art Association is to foster fine arts and to cooperate with other associations having similar purposes. Membership is open to all interested persons age 18 or older. Heart Ball Raises More Than $247,000

Dr. Andrew Mitchell will present the lecture, titled “Hungry Souls in a SelfAffirming Culture: Rediscovering the Beauty of Food and Feasting.” Parents, teachers, and community members are invited to attend.

Mitchell will address a hunger that needs to be satisfied, different than stomachs seeking to be filled or personalities seeking affirmation. Mitchell earned his bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College and his master’s and doctorate degrees from The Ohio State University. He is an associate professor of history at Grove City College.

RTCM Dinner from pg 1 Molls grew up in Wisconsin, fishing, trapping, and hunting with his father and grandfathers. The experiences prepared him for exploring the wilds of Alaska. Molls attended guide school in Montana and completed a two-year apprenticeship in the Alaskan bush to become a licensed Alaskan big-game hunting guide. For the past 20 years, sportsmen from around the world have followed him through some of the most remote regions of the largest state in pursuit of a variety of native game. Molls, who is married with three daughters, continues to appreciate the rewarding time he spends with nature. He is grateful to be able to share those experiences with others.

Santiago noted that auction and door prize items worth a total of $22,000 have been gathered for the event. Among the live

auction items will be a Mathews bow, a muzzle loader, and a deer shanty. The Chinese auction will feature a TenPoint crossbow, an Elite compound bow, and a Kids Package Carbon Express Blade Pro. Door prizes will include hunting and fishing gear and the grand prize of a 10 point Nitro crossbow. Santiago explained that the items will be sold or given away throughout the event.

“We will sell a (live) auction item, then (announce) a Chinese auction item (winner), and then announce a door prize,” he said.

Santiago will also give an update on the ministry, which strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. “The

purpose is to bring men out of their addiction and heal them from their trauma, so they can become productive citizens in the community,” said Santiago, who noted that by bringing a relationship with God into the students’ lives, the program aims to restore the men to their families. Santiago noted that he plans to have a program graduate share his story at the banquet. “When you see (a graduate share his testimony), you thank God for letting you have a small part in that,” he noted.

Tickets are required for individuals to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Friday, March 1. Organizers dedicated this year’s Heart Ball and Open Your Heart appeal to longtime Heart Ball committee member and American Heart Association volunteer Kim McNabb, who passed away in December of a heartrelated illness. McNabb had been a volunteer for the Heart Ball since its inception 34 years ago. In his honor, American Heart Association, Lancaster Division board president Shawn Hart presented the Kim McNabb and Glenn L. Myers Friend of Heart Award to two other longtime volunteers and American Heart Association supporters, Brian and Sandy Brightbill.

Funds raised from the Lancaster Heart Ball will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in lifesaving research.

Exploring, Growing Together, a book discussion group at Lititz United Methodist Church (UMC), 201 E. Market St., Lititz, will continue its 2018-19 series, which aims to help people explore beliefs in a safe discussion environment.

The group meets on Thursdays on the lower level from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Attendees should use the lower-level parking lot entrance to the building.

On March 7, 14, and 21, Gerry Gwinn will lead the discussion on “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row” by Anthony Ray Hinton with Lara Love Hardin. The story of hope, love, justice, and the power of reading tells of Hinton, who spent 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. Arrested and charged in 1985, Hinton won his release in 2015.

In the case of inclement weather, the group will follow the Warwick School District schedule; if there is a delay or school is closed, the group will not meet that day.

Individuals do not have to be readers to join in the discussions. Each person must acquire the materials to read.

Participants are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat during discussions, if they wish.
