For Bernie Hendricks, Flowers Are More Than Business

“Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul.”Luther Burbank.

Work to Bernie Hendricks isn’t a chore; it’s an opportunity to help others.

Age to Hendricks isn’t a number; it’s experience and wisdom.

Flowers to Hendricks aren’t merely beautiful; they’re gifts from God to be nurtured.

“I never get tired of looking at flowers,” said Hendricks. “It doesn’t

take

much to make me happy. We grow flowers with a little help from Him (God). Look what God created. It doesn’t get better than that.”

Perhaps the most important thing to understand about Hendricks is that she’s a unique individual who’s living her best possible life. No regrets. No looking back. No excuses.

“The main thing is to be honest and forthright,” said Hendricks. “I won’t beat around the bush. I just want to be remembered as an upfront and honest person.”

But at 84, Hendricks isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

Hendricks remains firmly

entrenched as part of the management team at Hendricks’ Flower Shop, 322 S. Spruce St., Lititz, a local business her husband’s parents started. She still works 65 hours a week, because “it’s what I want,” even though she handed off the day-to-day operations of the mom-and-pop shop to her daughter, Sue Ellen Hendricks, five years ago.

“I feel great. I’m busier than ever,” said Hendricks. “I think you should appreciate everything you do. I’m a consistent worker. I do things and lift things most 84-year-olds can’t.”

The third-generation Hendricks’

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.

scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.

The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer

from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.

Dibartolo and Heagy would

like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.reallancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.

Film Screening, Discussion Planned

The Arts at Millersville University’s On Screen/In Person Film Series, in partnership with the MU Disability Film Series, will present “I Didn’t See You There” on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Cen-

ter, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will feature a panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., a screening of the 90-minute film at 7 p.m. and an in-person question-and-answer session with filmmaker Reid Davenport.

In “I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport shows how he sees the world, from either his wheelchair or his two feet, without having to be seen himself. The unexpected arrival of a circus tent outside his apartment in Oakland, Calif., leads him to consider the history and legacy of P.T. Barnum’s Freak Show.

“I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport’s first feature film, won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, the Grand

Jury Prize at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the McBaine Bay Area Documentary Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. It was scheduled to have a national broadcast on POV in January.

Panelists in the community discussion will include Jaclyn Nagle, executive director of the Disability Empowerment Center; Blue Guckert, a Millersville University (MU) student and president of MUADAPT; Jessica Hughes, assistant professor of communication and disability studies at MU; and Marco Di Giulio, associate professor of Hebrew language and literature at Franklin & Marshall College.

The event is free and open to the public. To obtain tickets, call the box office at 717-871-7600,

Lititz Winter Funderland Set

Winter Funderland will take place on Monday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park in downtown Lititz. The event will take place during the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, which will run from Thursday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, Feb. 26.

The event will feature outdoor activities and games for kids, including a 60-foot-

Flower Shop was founded in the early 1900s. Over the years, Hendricks’ Flower Shop gained two greenhousesfrom the original four to sixand a reputation around town for being a fair and caring purveyor of nature’s beauty.

Hendricks is much more comfortable talking about the business’s place in the community than she is about herself.

“It’s not a business to me,” said Hendricks. “I love it because it’s helping other people. It’s a one-of-a-kind place and that makes me happy. I want to be known as a person who helps people, not one who just grabs money.”

Born and raised in Lititz, Hendricks has never strayed too far from the town, maily because home is where the heart is. Thoughts of retirement never enter her mind, not because she wouldn’t know what to do with herself, but because she’s never known anything else.

“I think one day a hearse will pull up next to the shop, and I think they’ll come to get me with my shoes on,” she said.

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West.

“We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Meetings are conducted by

volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.

GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 par-

ticipants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.

“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”

The Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF), 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz, will host Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, during the Lititz Fire and Ice event. The LHF, Lititz Museum, and gift store will be open to the public. During the event, tours of the 1792

Library Recognizes Donors

The Lititz Public Library recently honored the Wengert family for its support in memory of Cliff and Joan Wengert.

Initiated by Cliff’s son, Rich, just weeks before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, discussions with library leadership led to a timely contribution. Cliff and Joan particularly valued the learning and enrichment activities and resources provided by the library to the community.

Joan was an avid reader and frequent user of the library’s resources, while Cliff enjoyed a nearly 50-year career as vice president of his family’s dairy business, Wengert’s Dairy, which served the region and the Lititz community for many decades.

Rich’s discussions with the library’s director, Ryan McCrory, led to a list of projects, which the library board decided to carry out. These enhancements included out-

fitting one of the meeting rooms with audiovisual equipment, which allowed for fully remote conferencing. These additions were useful during the pandemic, as was the purchase and deployment of mobile hotspots and Chromebook laptops for patron use. To enhance patrons’ experiences within the library,

leaders chose to replace the aging public computers with new models and convert to LED lighting throughout the building.

The library commemorated the benefits provided by these technology improvements with a recognition plaque in memory of Cliff and Joan. The plaque was contributed by Pots by de Perrot.

Country Band To Perform

The classic country band Elisha Grant and Common Ground will perform on Friday, Feb. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Elisha Grant and Common Ground’s country repertoire includes outlaw and honkytonk styles, and the group also plays light classic rock and ‘50s music.

Elisha Grant, lead vocals and acoustic guitar, got his inspiration to play music when he was a boy, listening to his father and uncles play Appalachian music on guitars and the banjo during hunting season at the family’s hunting

camp in Potter County. Grant later became an enthusiast of rock bands such as CCR, Deep Purple and Johnny Winter before rediscovering the country music of performers such as Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. He became a songwriter as well as a guitar player, performing throughout Pennsylvania.

Force’s musical influences included the James Gang and Buddy Rich. Pedal Steel guitarist Bob Herr shared the stage with performers such as the Charlie Daniels Band and Clint Black.

The Feb. 24 show will be the second entertainment show of 2023 hosted by the nonprofit Eicher Arts Center Inc.

There will be a cover charge. Food and drinks will be available on-site from Brewster’s Bar-B-Que and TMD’s Traveling Bar.

AHA Advocates Handsonly CPR

During American Heart Month, February, the American Heart Association (AHA) is urging at least one person in every household across central Pennsylvania to learn hands-only CPR.

If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, make sure the scene is safe, then call 911 immediately and ask someone to get an AED, if available. Next, place one hand on top of the other and push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, until the AED or emergency services arrive.

Performing chest compressions to the beat of a familiar song is a good way to ensure they are done at the correct rate. Songs at the required tempo include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. More songs are available on the American Heart Association’s “Don’t Drop the Beat” Spotify playlist.

Anyone can learn handsonly CPR from a 60-second video available at www.heart.org/handsonly cpr.

Frederick Swarr, a resident of the Warwick Woodlands in Lititz and a member of the Lititz Art Association (LAA), will be the LAA Artist of the Month for February. Throughout the month, his artworks may be viewed at Purple Robin Reserve, 47 E. Main St., Lititz.

Swarr will exhibit his latest series, “Famous Visionary Artists.” He created each piece by reconstructing and enhancing a reproduction of artwork by a favorite artist and then adding the artist’s portrait in the foreground. Swarr, who has a teaching background in art history, created the pieces after researching photos and paintings done by the artists.

Swarr will also exhibit his “Musical Celebrities” series at a Makers Market on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Linden Hall gymnasium during the Fire & Ice Festival in downtown Lititz. Linden Hall is located at 212 E. Main St.

He began each of these collage-type paintings with a background depicting sheet music for a song made famous by the celebrity he planned to paint. Swarr was inspired by the celebrities’ facial expressions, and his goal was to portray a visual image of the feelings that people have in their hearts and minds when they first get to know a celebrity or legendary personality.
