Singing has a way of centering you, of washing away worries, of making time stand still. Singing has the power to both spark memories and render them irrelevant all at the same time.
Landis Homes’ Sing for the Moment Choir can’t cure dementia disorders like Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. But it can help to manage symptoms and make life a little more normal.
Sing for the Moment Choir focuses on here and now
of the brain that’s associated with singing and music stays intact for a very long time. (Singing) doesn’t change their situations. They might not even remember that moment. But parts of the mind are being stirred for a while. They’re singing for that enjoyment.”

“Music just does so much for folks,” said Regina Cabezas, Sing for the Moment Choir’s coordinator. “It touches (some people) in a place they can’t speak about anymore. We know that the part
Landis Homes’ Sing for the Moment Choir - an exercise in singing for individuals with memory loss and their care partners - is currently gearing up for its next performance. Practice and rehearsals for Sing for the Moment’s spring concert will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Landis Homes’ West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz.
The hourlong practices will be conducted each successive
Wednesday through April 23 in preparation for Sing for the Moment Choir’s spring performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, also at the retirement village’s West Bethany Chapel.
Participation in the choir is open
to everyone and not limited to Landis Homes residents. Registration is not required but encouraged through email at sftm@landis.org or by calling 717-381-3599.
“We talk about socializing,” said Cabezas. “It’s a place where (the singers) can feel very comfortable. They are just there. Lots of hugs, lots of smiles. It feels safe. They’re having a great time. It’s their space, but we can be in it.”

Do you know about The Fridge? No, I’m not talking about a typical run-of-the-mill refrigerator that you can find in nearly every kitchen of nearly every home. If you swap the neglected Tupperware container of old leftovers with locally sourced bar bites and replace the shelf of half-used condiments with hundreds of craft beers, you no longer have a common man’s icebox; you have The Fridge, a bottle shop and pizza café located at 534 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster.
The Fridge joined Lancaster city’s eclectic roster of eateries and bistros in 2011, but to understand its role in the local community, we have to go all the way back to the very beginning of the 18th century (bear with me).
In 1709, German immigrants made their new home in Conestoga, the fourth settlement of its kind in Lancaster County. Among the many cultural traditions and customs brought from their European homeland, the first German-Americans arrived with a mighty thirst for beer. At first, beer was brewed

It requires a very specific set of communication skills to engage an audience, present information in an interesting way and spark imaginations. Diane Whitcomb possesses those abilities, as well as a captivating topic with which to work.
Drawing from a love of history and a love for medicine, Whitcomb will lead a discussion on medicine in the 1800s as part of the next installment of the
public lecture series organized by the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF). Medicine has been playing a key role in human beings’ pursuit of health ever since the onset of illness.
“When I read about the healing arts or anything associated with disease or traumas, everybody wants a pill to cure everything,” said Whitcomb. “Today, when we say medicine, we mean a substance we put into our bodies. If we say health care, hopefully we think about our entire situation,

Students from the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) Music, Worship and Performing Arts Department will present their winter musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” beginning Friday, Jan. 31. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on
Fridays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 1 and 8, in Good Shepherd Chapel on LBC’s campus at 901 Eden Road.
An adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1835 fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea,” the musical has endured on stages of all kinds for 65 years. The comedy first opened off-Broadway in 1959 and moved to Broadway the following year, starring Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred, played at LBC by Faith Willis. “Once Upon a Mattress” spins a tale of a kingdom where finding a true princess proves to be more challenging than expected.

inside taverns and inns, but breweries quickly began popping up to match the growing community’s penchant for pints. By the 19th century, Lancaster County was a well-known hotbed of breweries, earning the nickname Little Munich in 1868 after The Daily Intelligencer published a story that read, “Lancaster in America occupies the same position that Munich does in Germany,” citing the area’s rapidly growing brewing industry.
Now let’s fast-forward to 2019. On a warm spring afternoon, I was sitting beside a console television on a sidewalk in downtown Lancaster city. I had greatly underestimated the weight of the massive appliance - which I found on the sidewalk a few minutes earlier - and I was only able to carry it halfway to my apartment before losing my grip. I sat next to the TV in defeat, cursing my hubris and wondering how I was going to finish my poorly thought-out venture, when the friendly face of Wyatt Deutsch appeared. Wyatt, a Warwick High School alumnus and recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, was dropping off his resume at local restaurants and cafes. Instead of finding a job, he found a gargantuan TV and a sweaty fool. After Wyatt graciously helped me haul the TV to my apartment, I spent a few minutes talking to him and his now-wife, Alex Douglas-Deutsch, who told me about their dream of running a restaurant together someday. At this point, you’re probably wondering what this article is even
things: Beer has played an important role in communities across Lancaster County for hundreds of years, and Wyatt Deutsch is the kind of guy who helps you carry a 100-pound. TV down the block. In April 2024, Wyatt took over as owner of The Fridge, after he and Alex spent a few years learning the ins and outs of the local craft beer and food industry as it weathered the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
“It’s really something how in the blink of an eye your whole life changes,” Wyatt said. “That’s the thing Alex says all the time, ‘How many people can say they chased their dream?’”
Wyatt’s vision for The Fridge is reflective of the beer industry’s longstanding importance to the Lancaster community. Although he has no desire to change the formula that made The Fridge a cornerstone of the local craft beer scene, Wyatt said he’s brainstorming a few ideas to expand the restaurant’s role in the community, such as organizing public events and opening a neighborhood bar in the West End. “Lancaster’s a really tight-knit community, and we

want to get more involved,” added Wyatt. “Whether you’re in Lititz, Strasburg or down in Solanco, you want a good community, and we’re fortunate to have that backbone.”
In addition to the closeness of the Lancaster community as a whole, Wyatt attested to the camaraderie between the area’s growing number of craft breweries. “That’s my favorite thing about this community specifically; we’re all trying to help each other out,” Wyatt said. “There are more than 30 breweries in the county now, and we like to recommend them to visitors. Each brewery is getting better and better every year.”

Medicine of the 1800s
our families. Medicine is used to stay healthy or become healthy. The study of medicine is what I find fascinating.”
A family nurse practitioner for several decades, Whitcomb will speak on “The Healing, the Harmful, and the Quackery: Medicine in the 1800s” at the Lititz Public Library (LPL), 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. The discussion is free to attend, but registration, which will begin on Saturday, Feb. 1, is required at https://calendar.lan casterlibraries.org/event/lititz-%20 historical-foundation-74715 or by calling LPL at 717-626-2255.
Whitcomb will wear a replica of an 1800s-era dress during her presentation.
“I want to speak to people’s
interests and give them something to think about in a way that they haven’t thought about before,” said Whitcomb. “I’m going to talk about some of the items on display at the (LHF) museum. It’s history presented in a really cool and interesting way. I want to benefit the museum. I want to make history come alive.”
As many as 100 local history enthusiasts are expected to attend.
“I want to make sure the discussion stays in a place of somewhat comfort for everyone,” said Whitcomb. “But I still want the audience to have that sense of wonder. We’re picking up a time in history that many audience members’ great-grandparents lived through. That kind of brings it home for me. It was a world my ancestors
Sing for the Moment
Sing for the Moment Choir is currently made up of 45 singers, including residents of Landis Homes, residents of Brethren Village Retirement Community, members of the surrounding communities and their caregivers. Many of the songs that will be sung are hymns and old love songs.
“It’s also a place for family and friends to get involved with their loved ones,” said Cabezas.
She noted that while medications can help to manage the symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, these conditions have no cures. Through activities such as the choir, family members, friends and others can focus on making daily lives better for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
lived in, and how did they survive? It’s not just medicine. Everything flows together.”
Whitcomb’s 30-minute, interactive presentation will feature a slide show, visual aids and opportunities for audience feedback.
“We will have a great time,” said Whitcomb, who has gained her knowledge through books, lectures and historic trips. “I like to ask people to time travel with me and think about how medicine was then. For the most part, they were kind people who wanted the best for everyone. But why didn’t they wash their hands when they performed medical procedures?”
Some of the medical practices of the 1800s may seem out of date, maybe even archaic today. But the
medicine of the 1800s paved the way for the advances of 21st-century health and well-being.
“They tried,” said Whitcomb. “What are people going to say about our medicine 150 years from now? We think of (past medical procedures) as antiquated. At that time, they did the best they knew how to do.”
Whitcomb, a resident of Mount Joy, has presented a number of similar historical medical discussions in a variety of settings, including to small medical groups, gatherings of paramedics and EMTs (emergency medical technicians), historic sites and museums.
“I don’t want to go backward,” said Whitcomb, “but I want to know where we came from.”

“The reality is that the cases of Alzheimer’s and dementia are going to grow because people are living longer,” said Cabezas. “Families are a huge part of this, just knowing their loved ones are being cared for.”
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 280,000 Pennsylvania residents age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s, or about 11% of the 65-plus population. But there are also many people living with Alzheimer’s who haven’t been diagnosed.
“People get nervous when they get older and start forgetting things,” said Cabezas. “I tell them not to worry, that we all have memory loss. But if you can’t find your way home or you don’t know how to brush your teeth, you
Discussion group to meet
The Exploring, Growing Together Discussion Forum will meet on Thursdays, Feb. 13 and 27, to discuss “My Side of the River: A Memoir” by Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez. The discussion will be led by Evie Bergey. The group’s meetings now take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the conference room at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. The EGT series aims to offer a safe learning environment where people
may discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs.
Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussion. Each person must obtain the materials for the course unless specified in the group’s schedule, which is subject to change. Those planning to attend are asked to contact Linda at 717-626-0745 or raven303@ptd.net. The schedule may also be obtained by contacting Linda.
might have dementia. People with dementia might not remember that someone has passed away. We don’t try to bring them back to reality. We go to where they are. As we’ve learned about dementia, we don’t go to what makes sense for us.”
Sing for the Moment Choir was established in 2018 through the cooperation of Landis Homes employee Faith Hoover and the Alzheimer’s Association. Since its inception, the group has performed publicly seven times.
“Just offer (individuals with memory loss) assurance,” said Cabezas. “For families with loved ones with memory loss, just being with someone can be special. They want your time. They want your attention. Make them feel
comfortable.”
