Julius Sturgis Pretzel
BY JEFF FALKBecauseit’s all around and everywhere you look, anyone can appreciate the beauty of Lititz. But Tom Roe perceives it in a much different way - through the lens of a camera.
Roe, a local professional photographer, is a self-professed visual storyteller. And of all the subjects he captures, one of his favorites to portray is his adopted hometown of Lititz.
“Essentially, Lititz is very photogenic,” said Roe. “But what separates the work I do from taking pictures with a cellphone is planning and execution. I want to show off the beauty of Lititz in the best possible way. Yes, Lititz is a beautiful town, but that makes it even more important to capture it in the right way. You’ve got to give it the respect it deserves.”
Through his photography, Roe has engrained himself in the Lititz community.
Roe works closely with the tourism-oriented organization Venture Lititz and helps promote local

businesses and people through his commercial photography. He estimated that 80% of his paid work originates from the Warwick and Ephrata areas.
Recently, he published the “Tom Roe Photography Presents 2023 Lititz Community Choice Calendar,” which features familiar shots of the town presented in a uniquely artistic fashion.

“Since I moved here in 2018, it’s been my main focus, the town,” said Roe, a graduate of Solanco High School. “Photography is an art. You can’t learn to be an artist. You can learn the art. Learning how to be a photographer from an artistic point of view was what I was missing.”
It was that evolution as an artist that allowed Roe to become a professional. After 20 years of honing his craft, Roe ditched his job in retail and took the full-time leap into the world of professional photographyproducts, portraits and promotions.
“It’s my profession. It’s what I do,” said Roe. “It’s more work than people think. What I do is very complicated.
Every single photo I approach, 98% of the work is done before I take the shot. It’s the execution that’s important. It’s a long process and every step is connected.”
Roe has learned a lot on the job through repetition and trial and error, building on his education at Hallmark Institute of Photography in Massachusetts. However, his photography education began long before that, as
he grew up around the art form.
“When I was a kid, we’d go on camping trips, and I was always the first one to grab the disposable cameras,” said Roe. “My mom would always bring three or four cameras along, and she’d have to hide them from me. At one point, I was like, ‘You mean you can do this for a living?’ I set my mind to it. I decided to go to school for it and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
BY JEFF FALKHe didn’t invent the pretzel. But Julius Sturgis did help it take a leap forward.
The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, located at 219 E. Main St. in downtown Lititz, is part museum, part local attraction, part gift shop, and part living history. But it’s all about pretzels, all the time. The local landmark celebrates the tasty, salty snack, while paying homage to its heritage. Over the years, the original site of Sturgis’ pretzel bakery has evolved into a must-see destination for both locals and tourists alike.
“ We’re America’s oldest pretzel bakery,” said Kurt Van Gilder, general manager of Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery. “We have history written all over our building. We consider ourselves an anchor of Lititz. But to me, it’s just a fun place to be.” See Sturgis Pretzels pg 4

The Lititz Historical Foundation will host a presentation on the Conestoga River on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.

Local historian, author and photographer Donald Kautz will give an overview of the history along the Conestoga River. He will examine the historic conditions along the Conestoga, the effects that settlement of the county has had on the river and steps that can be taken to preserve the waterway.

The Conestoga River meanders for 60 miles through the farmlands of Lancaster County. From early Native American inhabitants to the European settlers who made the Conestoga Valley their home, local residents have found sustenance and transportation in the river. Victorian-era resorts and hotels were built along the river, providing new recreational activities as steam power drove innovative forms of transportation and waterpower.
As the region developed and the population grew, the river experienced increased pollution from sewage runoff and industry. Conservation efforts from the end of the 20th century through the present day have aimed to restore the river’s beauty and recreational reputation.
Copies of Kautz’s book, “The Conestoga River: A History,” will also be available for purchase with cash.

This program is free, but donations will be accepted. Registration is required by calling the Lititz Public Library at 717-626-2255.

The bakery treats guestsnearly 350,000 annually - to a 25-minute tour of its modest facilities, then rewards them with a complimentary bag of pretzels at the conclusion. Included with the tour is an instructive hands-on session, where visitors are taught the fine art of twisting pretzels.
Sturgis’ famous soft pretzels are still made on-site, daily.
“Most people have no idea, but you’ll never look at pret-

zels the same way again,” said Van Gilder. “They walk in not knowing they’re going to get a learning experience. It’s a fun family adventure where kids will learn and adults will learn.”
In the 1850s, Julius Sturgis was employed at a Lititz pretzel bakery cleaning up the day’s leftovers, which at the time were either thrown away or fed to livestock. Sturgis approached his boss with the idea of selling the leftovers commercially, and after he
was twice turned down, Sturgis went into business for himself.
“In 1861, he opened his own bakery,” said Van Gilder. “He had 14 children and put them to work here. It’s the American Dream, because he was turned down twice. His first building burned down, but he was persistent and the rest was history.
“Pennsylvania produces 80% of the consumable pretzels in the country,” added Van Gilder. “We’re (central

In the early 1950s, the Sturgis pretzel-producing operation was shifted to Reading, and then 20 years later moved to its current location in Shillington. Maintaining its original location in downtown Lititz is a way for Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery to remain true to its roots.

PeoplesBank Supports YMCA

PeoplesBank recently donated $50,000 to the Y Community Development Corporation, which is part of the YMCA of the Roses’ community development work to lift up local neighborhoods through projects ranging from establishing affordable housing to improving public safety infrastructure.

PeoplesBank is a key partner of the Y Community Development Corporation and the YMCA, with this year being the fourth year of a five-year commitment in the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Program. Through the program, millions of dollars have gone toward improving the quality of life of thousands of individuals, youths and families.
The YMCA and its partners have transformed blighted properties into low-income housing; installed and main-
tained streetlights; implemented security camera systems, which have been used to assist law enforcement; maintained the appearance of local neighborhoods through façade improvements; and been part of ongoing street sweeping efforts.
To learn more about the YMCA’s community development work, contact Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@roses ymca.org.
