Heknows Lititz is important. He knows history is important. And he knows Lititz history is important.
That’s what makes Cory Van Brookhoven a well qualified candidate for the job. So qualified, in fact, that they created a position for him.
At the onset of the new year, Van Brookhoven officially became the full-time president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. Born and raised in Lititz, Van Brookhoven had been a regular volunteer at the Lititz Historical Foundation until the organization combined the former parttime positions of event coordinator and museum coordinator.
“I like working behind the scenes and being anonymous,” said Van Brookhoven. “I’m thrilled about the new position. I still can’t believe it.
But I like to focus on the foundation. The Lititz Historical Foundation is alive, we work with the community, we’re out there. We’re real. We’re authentic.”
In a town as historic as Lititz, there are few things more authentic than the Lititz Historical Foundation. Supported by a board and a 45member staff made up of mostly volunteers, Van Brookhoven is responsible for duties including fundraising, event planning, marketing, guiding tours, changing displays and managing the general day-to-day operations of the Lititz Museum, the Johannes Mueller House, which is located at 137-145 E. Main St., just east of Lititz’s downtown business district. Van Brookhoven was already performing some of those duties as a volunteer. But his new position allows him to focus even more time and energy on their
finer details.
“A lot of my inspiration comes from my grandfather, who carried mail in Lititz,” said Van Brookhoven. “I guess you could say it’s in my blood. I always had hoped that someday I could make a fulltime career out of something I’m so passionate about.”
“I’ve been involved with local history and tourism since 2008,” added Van Brookhoven. “I learned as I went. I taught myself a lot. I did a lot of reading.”
Armed with a degree in video and television broadcast from Kutztown University, Van Brookhoven has held a number of employment positions over the last three decades of his work life, including a job at the Lititz Record-Express. But none have indulged his lifelong curiosity about local history the way that his current one does.
Warwick Band Recognized
BY JEFF FALK
You know it’s a big deal when a state senator pays a visit. But then again, state championships are always a big deal.
On Jan. 5 at Warwick High School, state Sen. Ryan Aument presented the Warrior marching band awards in
recognition of its recent state championship performance. Each of the band’s 85 eighth- to 12th-grade members received a certificate of achievement from Aument.
In addition, the students were presented with medals purchased by an anonymous donor recognizing the feat.

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful.

Sen. Ryan Aument (holding award) recently recognized the Warwick marching band for its state championship.
Three years.
Thirty-six months of exploring the differences and similarities between people.
One thousand ninety-five days of altering the world’s perception of a common condition.
Twenty-six thousand, two hundred eighty hours of helping people with Down syndrome function better in their world.
On Jan. 11, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster conducted its third birthday party, celebrating three years of serving the local Down syndrome community. It was a special milestone for the special place located at 2503 Oregon Pike.
Over those years, GiGi’s Playhouse has enhanced the lives of hundreds of participants from Lancaster, York and beyond. Yet in many
ways, GiGi’s Playhouse is just getting started.
“When we opened three years ago, it was exciting,” said Christine Hewitt, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s site coordinator, “because there were support groups, but there wasn’t anything in the area like it. The main goal is to change the way people view Down syndrome. Everything we do here is designed to help people with Down syndrome do their best. But we also support their families.”
More than a playhouse or even a school, GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome achievement center. The Lancaster location serves nearly 380 participants and their families through hands-on programs, tutoring, exercise classes, activities, arts and crafts and life skill-building sessions, all free of charge.
GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s participants range in age from infants to those 60 years of age. Hewitt is the lone paid employee, but she’s supported by a staff of more than 40 volunteers.
“We practice a lot of like skills here,” said Hewitt, a resident of Ephrata. “We focus so
much on little steps, on the next steps they can do. Here, we celebrate little wins. They’re little things we take for granted.”
“People often think people with Down syndrome can’t do things,” continued Hewitt. “The truth is they can. They’re just going to need more time or a little help. They’re so capable of so much.”
GiGi’s Playhouse bears the name of GiGi Gianni, who was
born with Down syndrome in Chicago more than 20 years ago. Since the first GiGi’s Playhouse was founded, 54 other locations have been opened, including the one in Lancaster, the only site in Pennsylvania.
“Since we opened, people have really come out,” said Hewitt. “How quickly we’ve grown is surprising. We’ve outgrown this building. But what’s also surprising is how
much of an impact it has had on our participants.”
“It’s allowed them to become their best selves,” added Hewitt. “I’ve seen so many participants come out of their shells. This is like a home to them. They are safe here. They take a lot of pride in this place.”

“Stage Brawl” Fundraiser Slated

Lancaster leaders will leap out of their comfort zones in this lighthearted competition, performing songs or stage or movie scenes to support Prima Theatre. The contenders are Dan Burkholder, Dawn Cox, Travis Eby, Justin Johnson, and Kevin
Ressler. Every dollar raised is a vote for the contender of the donor’s choice.

OMPH School provides classes for students in preschool through grade eight.
In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students
can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”
Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email specific questions to company representatives.
Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue
using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”
JA Inspire is provided to
schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.
JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl .com/jainspirefair.
Grant Provides Truck To Power Packs Project
Using a targeted regional commitment to address food insecurity, the High Foundation has awarded Power Packs Project a grant in the amount of $55,000 for the purchase of a 20-foot box truck. Power Packs will now
be able to transport more than five times more fresh produce and other nonperishable food to families in need in the community.
Power Packs executive director Brad Peterson explained that the new truck
has the capacity to move up to five tons of food. In the past, he noted, Power Packs would need to make multiple trips to pick up or deliver food and sometimes had to turn down donations because of the lack of transportation. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
The truck will be operational immediately and will be used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner schools as well as pickups from food donors and pro-
duce farmers. Last year, Power Packs provided nearly 400,000 healthy meals to families struggling with hunger. More information about the organization is available at www.powerpacks project.org.
The High Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of people who live and work in Lancaster city, Lancaster County and other communities in which the High Companies provide economic investment and employment. In 2021, the High Foundation invested more than $3 million in local communities. For additional information, visit www.highfoundation.org.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Posted
County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.
There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to pur-
chase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.
According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.
For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www. lancastercountyparks.org.
On Nov. 12, 2022, at Hersheypark Stadium, the Warwick marching band captured the state championship in the Yankee Open Division at the Cavalcade of Bands’ competition, with a total score of 94.25 out of 100. The Warriors were judged to be the finest among five bands competing in the Yankee Open class. Warwick also took home top honors for best color guard, best overall effect, best visual and best music. The performance marked Warwick’s first state championship at the Cavalcade of Bands in 14 years.
“I am beyond proud of the work these kids have displayed this year, the growth they’ve achieved and their 100% complete buy-in of their pursuit of excellence,” said Matt Tenaglia, director of the Warwick High School and Middle School bands.
On and off the field, the Warwick band was led by students Hayden Milchanowski, the drum major; wind captain Maggie Turner; brass captain Jack Haught; and color guard captain Rose Grisbacher.
This year’s performance was titled “Reframed.” The show included an opener, a ballad, and a closer, and it incorporated members forming boxes on the field.
“Everyone this year did a really good job,” said Milchanowski. “We hit it hard our first day of band and our

Do’s And Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss
Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Cen-
ters for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.
DON’T go shopping while
hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.
DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking
Bicycle Club Grant Program Posted
The Lancaster Bicycle Club’s grant program provides funds to support bicycle-related activities and initiatives in Lancaster County. In 2023, the Lancaster Bicycling Club will provide $30,000 in grants.
Grants will be made at the
sole discretion of the Lancaster Bicycle Club. Grant funds primarily come from the net profits of the club’s annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic ride, which is held each August.
Grants can be requested by municipalities, schools,
and nonprofit organizations for four primary reasons. Grants are available to improve the bicycling experience in Lancaster County, including items like bicycle repair stations, signs, and markings; for repair or maintenance of bicycling
the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

Millersville University’s Tell School of Music faculty will open the 2023 academic year with “Creatures: Some Mythical - Visual Meets Sonic Art” on Thursday, Jan. 19. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the Owen Salon at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
“Creatures: Some Mythical - Visual Meets Sonic Art” is a work created by adjunct professor Rusty Banks, composer and guitarist; Dan Zdilla, collage artist; and Andy Babin, projections designer. Banks conceived the work as an instrumental piece for classical guitar and surround sound electronics. Each movement depicts a real or imaginary creature ever-present in Banks’ childhood conscience, such as the firefly,
hellbender and doodle bug. After viewing an exhibit of Zdilla’s collages in a local gallery, Banks approached him about creating works based on the creatures. The results are six works made entirely from pieces cut from copies of National Geographic Magazine. Zdilla deconstructed the original found imagery into scraps and bits of formal elements such as color, value and texture and then reassembled these elements into new images.
Babin, with tech support from 4-Wall Entertainment, created animations to be projected behind the performer using high-resolution scans of Zdilla’s works. The overall effect is like walking into the collages and exploring the landscape within. The music

Last year, tourists from 49 of the 50 United States and 43 countries visited the Lititz Museum.
“(Lititz has) more original standing structures than (Colonial) Williamsburg,” said Van Brookhoven. “People come to Lititz for the Norman Rockwell atmosphere. It’s one thing to have an historic town. But it’s a whole other thing to have one with a thriving mom-and-pop business district downtown. There are a lot of things to do here, and it’s affordable.”

ranges from ambient to experimental to lyrical, with the sounds of the classical guitar sometimes altered and moving throughout the space, such as from the front of the audience to the back of the room.
Banks was born in Jasper, Ala., and lives in Lancaster. His compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe, Canada and Mexico, as well as throughout the U.S. Besides writing concert music for ballet, orchestra, wind ensemble and other acoustic ensembles, Banks designs pieces that use traditional performers, userend electronics and video within dynamic audio/video installations.
Zdilla is an artist, musician and teacher from Lancaster.
He works in collage, creating naturalistic imagery that is at times representational or allegorical. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from Millersville University.
Known internationally as a lighting and video designer for live events, Ephrata native Babin has had his work included in performances by the Foo Fighters as well as The Weeknd’s halftime performance at the 2021 NFL championship.

Veteran To Share His Story
The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia, at 7 p.m.
The speaker will be Louis Cinfici, a native of Reading. Wanting to follow in the footsteps of his brothers who were in the military, at the age of 16, Cinfici forged his parents’ signatures so he could enlist in the Merchant Marines. In the Atlantic Theater, his job was to salvage what he could from destroyed ships and save as many lives as possible. He then traveled to the Pacific Theater, where he fought at Midway, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other locations. He and his shipmates shot down several kamikaze planes that nearly hit them. After he was old enough to legally sign up, Cinfici joined the Navy, and he fought in Korea and Vietnam. He was recently awarded the Gold Medal of Honor.
The meeting is open to all World War II veterans and anyone with an interest in W orld War II history. For more information, call 717319-3430.
