Rescuing Reptiles
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Likemany 8-year-olds, Viola Rothacker loves animals. She even has a favorite pet, but it’s not furry or four-legged. It’s a Mexican kingsnake named Dandelion. She’s completely comfortable around snakes, lizards, turtles and other creatures, handling them like a pro, because loving reptiles is in her DNA. Her father, Jesse Rothacker, operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary out of his home in Manheim.
Jesse started Forgotten Friend in 2004. “I knew there were a lot of people looking for a place to rehome reptiles,” he said, noting that many people underestimate how large reptiles will grow as well as their long lifespan. He realized that places like Humane Pennsylvania couldn’t easily take in reptiles since their shelters were already full of cats and dogs. “I know people love reptiles, and I knew there was a need for a rescue,” Jesse recalled. “I thought, ‘I can start one.’”

More than three years ago, Jason and Katherine Horst, owners of Horst Arts in Manheim, were working out of their home when they came up with an idea. “We were watching ‘The Great British Baking Show’ and decided to try a similar craft-based version with us and our two young children,” Jason recalled. “It was a lot of fun, and we tried to figure out how to host a full-fledged event out of our home with friends.” Although that idea never came to fruition, just a few months later, the couple opened its business at 17 N. Main St., Manheim, and the location became the perfect venue to host The Great Create. The first event was held in January of 2020. The next Great Create will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m.

Jesse, who grew up in southern California but moved to Lititz as a teen, has been a lifelong reptile fan. “In the ’90s as a teenager, I got my first pet snake, Leon,” he stated. “I loved him, and I took him everywhere.” In fact, he even got a detention at Warwick High School, where he graduated in the Class of 2000, for bringing Leon to school without permission.
In the early days of Forgotten Friend, he took in every reptile he could, with the hopes of rehoming them all. As the rescue grew, he shifted gears to refer people or provide information on their reptile, although he still takes in some animals. His business, now a nonprofit, receives most of its funding from the live shows Jesse offers - often accompanied by Viola and her
brother, Kenny, 12 - at local schools, churches, libraries and birthday parties. “We did 275 live shows this past year,” Jesse said.
Although both kids help with the shows, and Jesse’s wife, Kim, is a patient supporter of Jesse’s passion, it’s Viola who has really blossomed in the business, Jesse said.
“She shares my view on reptiles,” he stated. “Ever since I was little, if I saw a reptile, I wanted to get closer.”
By age 1, Viola was making television appearances with her dad, and he proudly shows off a video of Viola at about age 3, crying while Jesse records a large blood python. “She’s crying because I wouldn’t let her pet it,” he said.
Viola loves helping her
father with reptile care (they grow their own roaches and large mealworms for feeding their brood) and visiting the reptiles that live in the family’s basement.
“I really like to hold the animals,” Viola shared, noting that she also enjoys teaching others about the often-misunderstood creatures. “I like to tell people, ‘It’s OK. It’s not going to hurt you.’”
Jesse cautions that reptiles require respect when interacting with them and noted that he’s been bitten “thousands” of times, but that hasn’t dimmed his desire to help reptiles.
“Reptiles are magical and mysterious,” he said. “They’re quiet, but if you look into their eyes, there is a light on in the attic.”

Christine Kolanda, CDCE program specialist for the VA, accepted donations from Post 56 representatives (from far left) Mike Wert, service officer; Rodney May; and Russ Hogg, officer and ALR president.
As Jason explained, the event is an opportunity to indulge in creativity, get competitive and have fun. “This is a two-hour event that includes three rounds of artand-craft-based competition,” he shared. “The first round is fairly simple and very crafty. The second challenge involves cut paper and is a bit more technical. The third challenge is more freeform and involves a canvas and collage.” Instructions and guidance are provided at the beginning of each challenge, and no artistic knowledge or experience is required to participate. “A winner is chosen for each round, and at the end, an overall winner is chosen and receives a prize,” Jason stated.
The most recent Great Create was held in March of 2022, when participants were sets of mothers and daughters who were all friends, Jason said. “When friends do
this event together, there’s always more smack talk and that’s a lot of fun,” he remarked. “In fact, friendly ribbing is encouraged.”
He noted that artistic skill is not required to enjoy The Great Create. “This event is for people who watch reality television competitions and think it would be fun to experience a similar event in a fun
setting,” he said. “While it is a competition, that’s actually secondary. It’s about enjoying a challenge with friends or making friends while exercising your creative muscles.”
For more information or to purchase tickets for The Great Create, visit https://hor starts.com or stop by the studio. The deadline for registration is Saturday, Jan. 21.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets and senior members from the Pennsylvania Wing, including members of the Jesse Jones Squadron 304, Lititz, participated in Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville on Dec. 17.
During an hourlong ceremony honoring veterans from each branch of service, Squadron 304 cadets participated in the Line of Patriots to honor the procession. Following the ceremony, cadets and senior members assisted with laying wreaths at the graves of United States veterans.
The remembrance wreathlaying ceremony aims to express honor and respect for veterans. More than 2.7 million wreaths were laid countrywide at over 3,700 locations, with over 42,000 wreaths laid at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. When volunteers lay the wreaths, they are encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their
service and sacrifice and take a moment to reflect on that person and their life.
Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach future generations about the price of freedom. This mission is carried out all year.
Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday except holidays at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, located at the Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome. Service to one’s community, state and nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within CAP.
The Civil Air Patrol is the all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary. For more information, visit www.GoCivilAir Patrol.com or www.CAP.news. Details about the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 are available at www.JesseJones.cap.gov and by searching for “Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304” on Facebook.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups.
The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video. In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education
campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.”
Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.
Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations.
The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
