Night To Shine Event Set At Spooky Nook By Chelsea Peifer
The Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine is moving into the venue where event coordinator Joell Ketchum has always dreamt of hosting the event: Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. “It gives us a lot of space and growing room,” explained Ketchum, who has planned the event for the past three years. The Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine is one of hundreds of events sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and held each year on the first Friday of February to create an unforgettable prom experience for people with special needs. Night to Shine is one of several ministries led by the foundation established by Tebow, a former professional quarterback and current professional baseball outfielder and college football analyst for the SEC Network.
This year’s Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine will be held from 5:45 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, in Olympic Hall at Spooky Nook Sports, while hundreds of other events are hosted simultaneously by volunteers at sites around the world. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission is free. The Lancaster Collaboration originally hosted Night to Shine at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. According to Ketchum, 270 guests attended in 2019, and organizers are projecting 370 guests for 2020. When Lancaster Bible College (LBC) graduated more than 160 students on Dec. 13, 2019, Tracey Jones, who had earned her doctorate in leadership, was among them. Jones, daughter of Charlie “Tremendous” Jones and his wife, Gloria, is no stranger to LBC, but she was not an alumna … until now. “I have been a trustee of the school since 2010,” explained Tracey, who noted that she returned to Pennyslvania in 2008 when her father passed. She met Dr. Peter Teague and became involved in the capital campaign for the Teague Learning Commons, where the library named for her parents is located, and worked with development

Distinctive prizes and colorful ribbons will be given to the overall top three male and female finishers; the first-, second-, and third-place winners in different age and gender categories; and the first three finishers of any age group who race with their dogs. There also will be a packet pickup prize as well as door and dog prizes for this milestone-year event. A registration fee has been set and may be paid on race day. “It’s that time again for our Sierra Club - Lancaster Group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike,” said group representative Carl Kanaskie. “This is a very special year for us because it marks our 10th anniversary, which we’ll celebrate with (additional) unique prizes.” The event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Lancaster County Central Park. Participants and spectators may park for bus pickup at 826 Eshleman Mill Road, Lancaster. Race-day registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the park’s Pavilion 22/Kiwanis Lodge. The race will start at 10 a.m. Dogs on leashes are welcome to accompany their owners in the race. The course will follow the same route as last January, winding
the group’s free-to-the-public outdoor activities and educational programs. The Sierra Club is a national organization with each state having its own chapter. The Lancaster Group, one of 10 groups in the Pennsylvania Chapter, has about 1,500 members. Scores of volunteers also were on hand to oversee the event, and 47 well-behaved dogs either ran or walked with their owners. The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. The group uses the proceeds to support local efforts to end global warming, which is credited as the reason polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. The funds will help finance the group’s popular “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 44 Lancaster County organizations over the past four years. Tracey Jones from pg 1 was tumultuous. “I had just been through a shift with the business and lost my older brother,” recalled Tracey. “I came into it really broken.” Rather than becoming discouraged, Tracey found solace in her studies. “The dissertation program was a source of inspiration and encouragement and camaraderie,” said Tracey. “When you’re hurting as a leader (and) you talk to other leaders, and they say, ‘Keep the faith. We’re going through (this too),’ it is a sense of great comfort.” Tracey’s dissertation was titled “Leader Emergence in an Organizational Crisis - A Case Study of Follower Self-Efficacy.” “Selfefficacy (means) motivation,” explained Tracey, who, as part of her research, studied a merger that almost did not occur. “In the merger, 90% of what went wrong could have been seen with due diligence,” she said, adding that she had a revelation about halfway through the program. “(I realized that) if you don’t have self-motivated followers, (it doesn’t matter) if you’re the greatest leader in the world,”
Library Schedules Story Times Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, will open registration for its winter/spring story time sessions on Monday, Jan. 13, at 9 a.m. for residents of the library’s service area: Elizabeth Township, Lititz Borough and Warwick Township. Registration will be in person at the library, as phone registrations will not be taken on the first day. On subsequent days, people who live in other municipalities are welcome to register by phone or in person if openings are available, or they may be added to the waiting list. Online registration is not available. To verify municipality, adults who register a child for a storytime program on the first day of registration will be required to present their personal library card. Library memberships must be current and in good standing.
Story times to be offered will be Little Steps with Amy Moyer for children ages 6 months to 24 months with a caregiver, Toddler Story Time with Shannon Richard for children ages 2 and 3 (age 2 by Jan. 1) with a caregiver, and Preschool Story Time with Richard for children ages 3 to 5 (age 3 by Jan. 1). school and scholarships,” said Tracey, who also took over her father’s publishing and speaking business when she came back to the area. Tracey went to Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, N.Y., for a year after graduating from high school. She then attended Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., for a year before earning an associate degree at the New Mexico Military Institute. She received an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She finished with a Bachelor of Science, graduating as a commissioned officer and working on fighter jets. She served in the first Gulf War and the Bosnian War, and she lived in England, Italy, Germany, and Turkey. She followed her service career by working for Applied Materials in Austin, Texas, while she earned a Master of Business Administration in global management from the University of Phoenix. When LBC instituted its doctoral program, Tracey decided to earn her doctorate. She entered the program at the end of August in 2015. Unfortunately, the timing
she said. “Leadership is a dance. I learned that leadership is not as important as finding good followers.” Going forward, Tracey hopes to use what she has learned to work with organizations that are thinking of going through a merger. “I’d like to do premerger counseling,” she said. “(A merger) is a professional marriage,” said Tracey who plans to marry in early 2020. “I would love to do organizational reconnaissance, and tell (companies) which employees are on board, which need to get on board, and which will never get on board. As human beings, we don’t always see the big picture.” LBC’s doctoral program students can complete the 30-credit program in as little as two years. Courses are delivered in a blended format, offering the flexibility of online education and the benefit of only one three-week residency component. Students complete the program in a cohort community of about a dozen students. Tracey took part in the fifth cohort. McCracken Nets 23 Points in Win Over E-town by Vaughn Brown
Heading into Thursday’s road game with Elizabethtown (3-2, 7-4), Warwick (3-2, 7-4) was one game out of first place in Section Two. In the aftermath of the Warrior’s seemingly easy 76-54 victory, a logjam was created at the top with Lebanon (3-2, 6-5) joining them both at the top of the standings. Led by Joey McCracken’s game high 23 points, Warwick’s offense ran through the Bear’s defense, outscoring them in every quarter along the way. With Kai Cipalla (15), Conor Adams (13), and Ethan Minnich (11) dialed in as well, the Warriors just poured it on. Minnich also drained three from long distance with Tate Landis (6) hitting two from behind the arc. Leading 16-11 after the first quarter, Warwick extended its advantage to 33-25 by halftime and added another 43 in the second half while the Bears scored 29 during the same span. On Saturday the boys hosted Exeter in a non-league matchup and had to dig a little deeper to secure the 71-61 win after falling behind early in the first quarter. The Warriors found their groove soon enough, however, as Exeter’s David Heiser (25) and Cipalla (26) engaged in a high octane shoot out.

The Eagles pressured in the fourth, though they could not find enough in the tank to make it all the way back despite outscoring Warwick 30-26 in the frame. WRESTLING To everyone in the gym at Warwick High School on Thursday night for the Section One wrestling showdown between Penn Manor and the
Warriors it appeared as if the rout was on. Following Johnathan Hackett’s decision over Dylan Wenger in the opening bout at 126 pounds which gave Warwick a 3-0 lead, the Comets reeled off seven straight victories, five of which were falls, to take a commanding 36-3 advantage. However, the night was far from over as the Warriors capitalized on three forfeits, a 3-2 decision by DeVonte Hess over Pedro Gomez at 195, and a Hayden Benner pin over

Penn Manor’s Tanner Stefanick and Warwick’s Owen Heffner took to the center of the mat and from the whistle it was Stefanick who took control of the action. Scoring the first takedown, Stefanick recorded near fall points of two, two, and three to go up 9-0, contorting Heffner to the point of an audible grunt at one point. Heffner weathered the storm and was able to score a late reversal to end the period
9-2. Starting the second in neutral Stefanik again scored a takedown, but midway through the period Heffner reversed him to his back, sending his teammates and the gym into hysteria. Stefanik survived, however, and surrendered three near fall points to make it 11-7. With Heffner on top in the third, a clearly winded Stefanik first took a warning and then surrendered a penalty point for stalling while the two continued battling for position.

Moving forward, we’re aiming to limit turnovers and continue to improve free throw shooting on the offensive end, and continue to force teams into tough shots and continue to win the rebound battle in games.”
The next show of the Jack Frost Jubilee Fun Show Series by Crescendo Training Centre of Ephrata is in the final planning stages. The last show was held on Dec. 7 and 8, 2019, and money was raised for the Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center. Following the new format for this series, Dec. 7 featured Roxanne Baldwin of Millers, Md., judging the Dressage and Western Dressage with 49 rides. For the Dec. 8 show, 43 horses and riders competed. There were a total of 63 Hunter Over Fences rounds, 79 Western/Ranch entries, 25 English and 31 Gymkhana goes. The Dec. 8 show was judged by Tricia Sullivan of Pottstown, while Kriss Phelps judged the Games/Gymkhana division. Free Throw Championship Slated The annual Knights of Columbus free throw championship, sponsored by Council 6810, will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at St. Leo the Great School, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate. All contestants on the local level will receive a certificate of participation. Additionally, winners in each age group and in each gender category will receive a Council Champion certificate and a trophy or plaque. Participants are required to furnish proof of age, such as a birth certificate, and written parental consent. A contestant’s age category is determined by his or her age as of Jan. 1. Competitors will register at the door by filling in a brief entry form. There is no entry fee. Contestants may only participate in one

Ephrata (3-2, 7-4) leads the division while Elizabethtown (2-3, 7-3), Warwick (2-3, 4-5), and Lebanon (2-3, 3-7) are all bottlenecked behind. “We got off to a 1-4 start but have been 3-1 since and I believe we’re beginning to hit our stride,” commented head coach Danny Cieniewicz, “We still need to put a complete game together, as we’ve had games in which we’ve played solid halves, but haven’t really put together a complete team effort.” Friday’s game with defending section champ Elizabethtown is a perfect case in point as the lady Warriors went into the break down 24-10 but outscored the Bears 29-15 in the second half, used a buzzer beater to force overtime and scored the only points of the period on five free throws to win 44-39. Lauren Pyle and Jess Williamson led with a game high 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Warwick tried and failed to find any traction in the first half. Elizabethtown outscored the Warriors 11-5 in the first quarter and 13-5 in the second

control. He confessed to his wife and three daughters, and the family began packing to leave Hawaii. Packing, however, was only the beginning. The journey of healing began when James’ daughters came to him and hugged him, and the couple started to see God’s grace in the middle of the pain and anger. They began to focus on allowing God to restore their brokenness, putting their entire lives into rebuilding the family. The Conquer Series helped James understand what was happening in his mind and impacted his movement forward away from addiction. In 2014, Santiago worked with Petra Church in New Holland to bring Roberts to Lancaster County. Roberts taught a seminar at the church and then served as a speaker at a banquet for an addictions ministry Santiago was directing at the time. In his work at RTCM, Santiago strives to help individuals who have turned to addictions often to overcome a past trauma. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Santiago uses The Conquer Series with the clients at RTCM because he says
Roberts’ book “Pure Desire” addresses the principles of sexual addiction. “I ask (clients) to tell me what a chapter was about, what (they) learned, how (they) can apply that in (their lives),” said Santiago. “That helps them (because it) starts transforming them from the inside out. I want them to develop accountability. I use (the series) because it’s effective.” Santiago emphasized that the seminar can be useful for couples that are experiencing any kind of marital strife. “(They may ask) ‘Is it how we communicate? How we manage our finances? Childhood trauma that we haven’t addressed?’ It could be anger, verbal or physical abuse, or emotional abuse,” said Santiago. “There are all kinds of things that can be wrong in a marriage, and (the seminar) will address all of that. Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will kick off its 100year anniversary celebration in 2020 by bringing together volunteers to make 6,500 comforters on one day - Saturday, Jan. 18 during an event known as The Great Winter Warm-up. Locally, the MCC East Coast office has set an additional goal of collecting 5,000 comforters during January, so events are scheduled before and after Jan. 18. The region has many MCC supporters who donate comforters throughout the year, including members of the Plain community, which spurred the added challenge. The Great Winter Warm-up January events will jump-start MCC’s supply of comforters, which are sent to people in crisis around the world each year. In 2018, MCC sent more than 53,000 comforters as a practical message of love and compassion in the name of Christ. East Coast supporters generated nearly 30,000 of those comforters for MCC’s ministries. During The Great Winter Warm-up events, volunteers are invited to help knot comforters as they celebrate MCC’s centennial. Participants will work together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting and sturdy backing fabric into warm, durable and beautiful comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops

Bondelandet Lodge To Meet The Bondelandet Lodge, the local connection with Sons of Norway, will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. Members will celebrate the installation of officers for 2020-22. Maritime Night will feature a DVD on Norwegian immigrant Thea Christiansen Foss. Foss founded Foss Maritime, now the largest maritime company on the West Coast. There will be a show and tell of Lodge members’ maritime belongings. Following the Norwegian tradition of hospitality, visitors are welcome and invited to share in the special dessert table. The Sons of Norway is a fraternal organization for those interested in the culture of Norway. The Bondelandet Lodge serves Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties.
