OnOct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of

the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.

The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”

Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.

“W hen it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was

also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville f or five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record. “It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album.

There are quite a few tall tales surrounding Manheim resident Jack Fasig - literally. Jack, who was born in 1894, was famous for his height and strength. He was 7 feet tall and weighed 400 pounds. Despite his size, however, Jack was known for being a kind man. Author Mike Gerhard tells the story of Jack in a new children’s book, “Gentle Giant: A Story of Jack Fasig, Legend of Lancaster.”

Geared toward children ages 4 to 10, the book teaches a lesson about kindness. “Jack was very powerful and very kind,” Gerhard wrote in the story. “He was not a bully. He used his great strength to help others. Jack knew that with great power came a greater responsibility.”

To write the book, Gerhard did extensive research on Jack, working with Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation; the Manheim Historical Society; the Historical Society of Pennsylvania; and other people and organizations.

Although much of the book is historically accurate, the story begins with a disclaimer: “Some of what follows is true.” While Gerhard embellished some of the tales of Jack’s size and strength, he included facts such as Jack’s nicknames, including “Man Mountain” and “Lancaster’s Paul Bunyan.” The book also details Jack’s intelligence, noting that he was valedictorian of his high school, often quoted Shakespeare and was known for singing German operas.

Gerhard, who grew up in Lititz but moved to Manheim when he married his wife, Donna, worked at Raymark years ago. “Everyone there talked about Jack,” he recalled. “They said how big and strong he was, and there were all kinds of rumors about him.”

Over the years, Gerhard began collecting information on Jack. He thought he might write a novel about Jack but struggled to complete it. “Then my daughter said, ‘Dad, you like to draw. W hy not do a children’s book?’” Gerhard recalled. “One of the reasons I wanted to do this book was to tell Jack’s story and make sure he is not forgotten.”

Gerhard worked on the book during the height of the pandemic, some days spending 10 minutes on it, some days working for hours to write the story and draw the illustrations. Once the book was finished, he considered publishing it through a traditional publisher, but changed his mind once he realized that could take a while. “I’m 72,” he said. “Most of the publishers said it could be six

months till they got back to me, and I can’t wait that long.” Instead, he self-published the book, which was released in late 2022.

Depending on how this book is received, Gerhard said he’d love to write a sequel. He hopes that children will take away an important message from the book. “I wanted to teach a

lesson,” he said. “Kindness is its own reward.”

Gerhard will sign copies of his book at Stauffers of Kissel Hill, 945 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The book is available f or sale at Longeneckers True Value, 127 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and on Amazon.

Speaker To Examine Biblical Metaphor

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Rachel Gehman will share “Temple Talk,” focused on I Corinthians 6:19a. She will share what the body’s being a temple means for Christ’s followers and how one can protect his or her temple from invaders and decay.

Gehman resides in Elizabethtown with her husband

and two children. She is an author, writing under the name Rachel D. Lyne, as well as a homeschooling mom. She and her family attend Manheim Grace Brethren Church, where Rachel and her husband are youth directors and members of the worship team.

Classes are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up. “Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.

The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on

Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz; and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

B.R. Kreider & Son Acquires H.L. Wiker

B.R. Kreider & Son Inc., an excavating, paving and site management company based in Manheim, recently announced the asset purchase of H.L. Wiker Inc. Excavating in Lancaster.

The new team members will operate out of one of B.R. Kreider’s three locations in Manheim, Lebanon and Quarryville, according to Brent Kreider, president of B.R. Kreider & Son Inc. H.L. Wiker has been serving customers in southcentral and eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and northern Maryland since 1988. The company is led by second-generation owners Donna Shoff and Jeff Wiker. As the owners looked to transition their business, they felt that the values and culture closely aligned with B.R. Kreider & Son, and it made sense to join the two teams and exit.
