Past the

Southern York County Organization Brings Regional Railroad History to Life

Historic trains are a reminder of simpler times.

Their leisurely journeys through the countryside invite passengers to slow down and ease into the rhythmic movement of the cars. The trees, like silent sentinels, create a canopy over the railroad.

A whistle blow reminds the passengers that the modern world has not completely ceded into the background, as the train crosses intersections with roads and vehicles must stop, almost at attention.

The Northern Central Railway in southern York County carries a smartly painted steam locomotive with three cars and a history unique to this region.

The William H. Simpson No. 17 locomotive, with its glistening black, red and gold paint, welcomes visitors to New Freedom, a tiny borough nestled among the contours of farmlands, hills and forests.

It is a replica of the Civil War steam locomotive that transported Abraham Lincoln to deliver his Gettysburg Address, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013.

Steam Into History Inc., a nonprofit educational foundation, operates the train and transports passengers back to 1863 when the Gettysburg Address occurred so they can explore the region’s Civil War history.

People in period costumes greet visitors as they enter the gift shop on Main Street and congregate near the train. Women wear hoop skirts while men don uniforms similar to those worn by soldiers during the Civil War. One woman sat in the shop spinning yarn from wool.

“The children love to smell the wool before it becomes yarn,” she said as she worked the wooden spindle, gingerly pulling strands of new yarn.

She pointed to some yarn dyed with various colors including blue, red and purple. “I use Kool-Aid to make the yarn colorful. Have you ever gotten Kool-Aid on your clothes? It never comes out,” she said, laughing.

Her presentation complemented the historical books, period clothes, trains and other items in the gift shop. She is among about 70 volunteers who bring to life the history of the region.

The duration of the train ride that begins in New Freedom depends upon the route chosen. The ride to Glen Rock is one hour, and the run to Hanover Junction is two and a half hours.

Each trip presents the natural beauty of the region: rolling hills meet swathes of farmland, houses of various sizes and colors peek out from behind trees, limestone rocks form compelling moss-covered formations and the Codorus Creek meanders along lazily.

“Locks & Canals Co. built the Original No. 17 in 1839 for the Baltimore & Susquehanna Railroad. Our York No. 17, also known as the ‘William H. Simpson,’ is a 4-4-0 standard gauge steam engine built by Kloke Locomotive Works in Elgin, Ill. Construction started in 2010, [and] the engine was delivered in May 2013.

The first public run was June 2, 2013, in Glen Rock.”

“As you look out the window … you will see a white marker with a capital W. This marker is very important to train safety. The maker tells the engineer that it is a quarter mile to the next road crossing. The whistle is blown to announce the arrival of the train and to clear the tracks.”

“As we pass through Railroad … you will see the 1859 Jackson House.

The owner had some new ideas for his hotel. His hotel offered hot and cold running water for your bath and steam heat! This was extremely rare at the time. Due to these wonderful amenities, the Jackson House became one of the finest hotels on the NCR.” The information was collected from primary sources and historical research. Phyllis Prodan, a longtime volunteer with Steam Into History, also narrates to passengers.

And each trip gives passengers an education into the region’s history during the Civil War through carefully scripted narrations. Once the passengers are seated on the train, the whistle blows and the story begins.

As the train moves at a steady speed of 15 mph, the narrator begins her story. Below are some excerpts from that narrative provided

“Each narrator provides different facts based on their research,” she said.

She said she particularly enjoys the dialogue she has with passengers about questions they have about the region’s history.

“I like finding the answers and making the changes, corrections and deletions that make my narratives accurate,” she said.

As volunteers dig deeper into the region’s history, more stories can join the narrative. The passengers’ attention to the narration as the train clatters along the rails suggests that everyone still enjoys being told a good story.

As the train ride comes to a close, the passengers disembark, chattering about their adventure. This rich experience is only one of many offered. Steam Into History also provides themed rides, including musical performances, staged train robberies (with proceeds going to a good cause) and murder mysteries. Other events focus on specific historic events and individuals.

YORK COUNTY Offers “Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail” … shall keep people from enjoying recreational activities in York County. While fairweather recreational activities abound and often span three - if not four - seasons, there are plenty of fun ways to stay active all year long. The following is a sampling of activities available to county residents and visitors:

Spring Horseback Riding: York County offers a number of public and private places to ride horses. Rocky Ridge, Spring Valley, and William H. Kain County Parks, as well as the Heritage Rail Trail, are all open to horseback riders, in addition to Gifford Pinchot and Codorus State Parks. Buffalo Springs Horse Farm offers public horseback riding at Codorus State Park, and places like Ridge Meadow Farm in southern York County offer trail rides with advance reservations to experienced riders. Park trails are closed to horseback riding in wet conditions, so it’s a good idea to check the park website before you go.

In addition, there is great fishing to be had in the Yellow Breeches, Conewago, Otter, Bald Eagle, Muddy, and Fishing creeks. And, of course, one cannot leave out the Susquehanna River, which offers some of the best fishing in the state.

Walking: The wonderful thing about walking is that it can be done just about anywhere. Those who like a leisurely stroll and do not wish to deal with automobile traffic should check out the Heritage Rail Trail, which features 21 miles of trail with three historic structures along the way. A number of entrances from York city to southern York County are accessible to those who wish to walk different portions of the trail. For those who want to find some walking buddies, Nixon County Park offers Sunday walks from April to October. For those who are serious about walking, the York White Rose Wanderers Volksmarch Club holds events in York County and beyond.

Gyms/Rec Centers: From tennis to tae kwon do and group exercise classes to personal training, the gyms and rec centers throughout the county have fitness covered, both indoors and out. Year-Round Summer

Golf: Golf enthusiasts will not be limited by season, but summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery that can be found at courses such as Cool Creek Golf Club, Springwood Golf Club, Royal Manchester Golf Links, Briarwood Golf Clubs, and Heritage Hills Golf Resort, which also features golfing of the miniature variety for the whole family. York County also has an Amateur Golf Association that offers tournaments and other perks to area golfers and members.

Bicycling: Although often associated with motorcycling due to its Harley-Davidson heritage, York County is a great place for bicycling, as well. For those who want to meet other cyclists, the York Bicycling meetup offers an online place for riders to connect and organize rides, and the Hanover Cyclers is a club that formed in the 1970s to promote bicycling and bicycle safety. The club sponsors rides year-round. For the last couple years, York County officials have also been working on a countywide bike route that will eventually stretch from one end of the county to the other. The Heritage Rail Trail is also bicycle-friendly to all ages and offers Sunset Scramble and Moonlight bike rides in spring and summer. Mountain bike trails are available at Rocky Ridge, William H. Kain, Apollo, Codorus, and Pinchot parks.

Swimming: There’s nothing quite like a cool, refreshing dip in a pool on a hot summer day. A swimming pool at Codorus State Park sits on a bluff overlooking Lake Marburg and is a popular summer destination.

There are a number of pools throughout the county

that offer memberships, such as Pine Ridge Swim Club, Green Valley Swimming and Sports Club, Penn Oaks Swim Club, and Lincolnway Swimming Pool and Sports Club, among others. The York Jewish Community Center has an indoor pool open year-round, and the YMCA’s Graham Aquatic Center offers both indoor and outdoor pools. There is no swimming allowed in the York County Parks, but visitors may swim at Pinchot State Park at their own risk.

Boating/Kayaking: Pinchot and Codorus state parks offer boating and kayaking opportunities, as do Lake Redman and Lake Williams in William Kain County Park. Each location may have guidelines about the type of watercraft allowed, so be sure to check the respective websites before visiting. The Susquehanna River provides quite the playground for boaters, jet skiiers, and paddle sport enthusiasts. When the weather is nice, Lake Clarke, a manmade lake along the Susquehanna, is filled with motorboats, pontoon boats, houseboats, and even sailboats taking advantage of the Long Level Marina and Safe Harbor Boat access areas and Susquehanna Yacht Club. Shank’s Mare Outfitters serves as a hub for renting fishing, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding gear, among other things, and also offers fun events, lessons, and sales of myriad outdoor equipment. No day on the water is complete without a stop at their café for ice cream.

Fall

Hiking: Fall provides a brisk, colorful backdrop for a day hiking in nature. Hiking is available at almost all of the county parks and at all three of the state parks within York County. Pinchot Park offers 18 miles of [17]

trails, and the 196-mile Mason-Dixon Trail passes through it. Codorus Park features 19 miles of trails.

Samuel S. Lewis State Park has just 2 miles of trails but is a great place to fly a kite. The York Hiking Club is always looking for people to attend its hikes or to help with trail maintenance.

Hunting: Fall coincides with the beginning of several Pennsylvania hunting seasons. Small game season runs October through November, and deer archery season starts in early October and runs through the middle of November. The rifle season for deer starts the Monday after Thanksgiving and runs for two weeks. Limited hunting with special permits may be done at Rocky Ridge, William H. Kain, Spring Valley, and Apollo County Parks, as well as at Codorus and Pinchot State Parks. York County offers State Game Lands 242 and 243 near Dillsburg and 83 near Brogue for public hunting, as well.

Running: Running is another sport not bound by season, but the fall brings with it some fun races, like the York White Rose Run and the Sasquatch Preservation Trail Run, both in September, and Wrightsville’s Fall Flash 5K in November. The Heritage Rail Trail is also a popular place for running; John C. Rudy County Park has a 5K cross-country course; and Rocky Ridge County Park hosts the On the Rocks Trail Run, which offers different length routes up to a 45K, in August. York County is also home to the York Road Runners and a chapter of Moms Run This Town, a free running club for women.

Winter

Skiing/Snowboarding/Tubing/Sledding: The best-known place to ski and snowboard in this area is, of course, Roundtop Mountain Resort in Lewisberry, which offers slopes of varying difficulty for all skill levels. Roundtop also offers snow tubing, as well as activities outside of the winter sports season, like paintball, camps, and a ropes course, among others. Avalanche Xpress at Heritage Hills offers snow tubing once cooler temperatures arrive and provides two powered tow ropes, fire pits, and lighting. In addition, cross-country skiing is available at Apollo, Pinchot, and Codorus parks.

When it comes to sledding, York County residents may have their own favorite local hill, but Samuel S. Lewis and Codorus state parks provide exhilarating 600- and 500-foot long runs, respectively.

Park Programs: York County Parks and Recreation’s full slate of programming does not stop just because the weather gets cold. Hikes, nature and wildlife programs, and maple sugaring events, among other offerings, are held throughout the winter months when many people are longing for a dose of Mother Nature.

Ice Skating: The York Ice Arena allows for yearround public ice skating at its two NHL-size rinks and is home to the York Ice Hockey Club and the White Rose Figure Skating Club. The arena offers banquet rooms, skate rental, and a snack bar. For outdoor enthusiasts, when winter conditions are right, Pinchot and Codorus state parks allow ice skating on the natural ice of their respective lakes.

Bowling: For some, bowling is a rainy day activity for the whole family; for others, it’s a year-round pastime that can get quite competitive. York County is home to a number of bowling alleys, which offer leagues, special promotions, and fun events like glow bowling or cosmic bowling. Skating is permitted only when the ice is posted as safe. Avalanche Xpress at Heritage Hills offers an outdoor skating rink overlooking the grounds.

Snowmobiling: Those who enjoy snowmobiling mostly have to enjoy it on private lands in York County; however, Codorus State Park permits snowmobiling in late December after antlered deer season. Six and a half miles of trails are open to registered snowmobiles in the mountain biking area on Bankert Road.

Throughout the York Fair, the fairgrounds will be jam-packed with fun attractions. Visitors may view a variety of livestock, and attendees may also visit the Animal Birthing Center and the Farm Animal Learning Center. Other popular attractions include the annual butter sculpture, circus shows, draft horses, antique tractor and steam engine displays, various races, model trains, helicopter rides, and much more. The Kids’ Place will offer daily activities for children.

There will also be plenty of rides and games for people of all ages. Varied and unique food offerings will delight any palate.

This year, the York Fair will continue its tradition of providing world-class entertainment. The 2015 performance schedule includes Brantley Gilbert with special guests A Thousand Horses on Saturday, Sept. 12, and an evening with Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 19. Local performers will be the stars of the high school bands parade on Sunday, Sept. 13.
