VisitSusquehannaValley.com Dear Friends, Renaissance, revitalization, and renewal are all words now describing the momentum found in the Susquehanna Riverlands including the boroughs of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. With the development of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, outdoor enthusiasts are visiting the area and discovering its charm. Visitors find the area a treasure trove of history, unique shops, and culture. Young professionals, retirees, and those in between are choosing to settle down here. The region was recently named a National Heritage Area which will open up new and exciting possibilities. The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) is proud to be part of the excitement and growth.

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce serves area businesses located in Columbia, Marietta, Wrightsville, and beyond. Investment in SVCC membership is an investment in both local business and the local communities. SVCC provides a wide range of services to our members including assistance in promoting businesses, opportunities for networking, and coordination of grand openings and ribbon cuttings for new businesses. Member events such as mixers, breakfast meetings, and seminars serve to educate members while connecting members to one another. SVCC continually adds to its list of member benefits that will assist our member businesses in their growth and development. Community members are welcome to show their support of this mission by becoming Patron Members of SVCC. SVCC’s Visitors Center greets over 15,000 guests to the region annually. The Center welcomes visitors from nearly every state and more than 15 countries each year. Built by Lancaster County Vo-Tech students over 29 years ago and financed through the Chamber of Commerce, the Visitors Center has been maintained solely through local efforts including membership dues and fundraising initiatives. Interested volunteers are always welcome to join us.

SVCC staff coordinate the events which serve the dual purposes of raising funds for the Visitors Center and raising the communities’ visibility. Among these events are the well-known Bridge Bust and the Antique, Art & Craft Show. A collaborative fundraising effort with the Columbia Lions Club, Thunder on the River Car Show has become one of the most popular car shows in the region. A new favorite event is Rivertown Hops which evolved from a partnership with CrocodileDog Marketing. This brewfest features food trucks, breweries, distilleries, and a variety of vendors. All these events serve another purpose – that is to bring increased foot traffic into the local area.

Partnerships among communities, their businesses, and their non-profit organizations serve to make all of us stronger and more successful. Chamber membership allows us to join together to accomplish more for our region. SVCC is proud to play a key role in this collaboration.

Chartered in 1928 as the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) began representing the tri-borough region of Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville in the late 1980s.

SVCC most visibly represents the area through its operation of the Visitors Center located along Route 30.

SVCC strives to improve the quality of life and to promote an atmosphere of business cooperation in Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. This mission is easily seen in the SVCC tag line “River Towns Working Together.” SVCC service reaches beyond these river communities on both sides of the Susquehanna River, extending into Lancaster and York Counties in south-central Pennsylvania.

The Chamber and Visitors Center functions under a Board of Directors and is operated by a small staff, college student trainees, and volunteers. Over 100 volunteers give of their time to make SVCC fundraising events a success.

MISSION:

The Visitors Center is operated by the Chamber to provide information to the community, travelers, and tourists to the area. Members of the Chamber may place brochures, flyers, and other promotional items in the Visitors Center.

Additional paid advertising is also available to members who wish to be featured in our Lighted Display Board and/or our exterior digital sign.

AFFILIATION The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is not organizationally a part of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the York County Chamber of Commerce, Discover Lancaster, or the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

However, we do enjoy reciprocal honorary memberships with these organizations.

MEMBERSHIP Almost two-thirds of our members come from the tri-borough area of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. Other areas of Lancaster and York Counties as well as regions beyond are represented in our membership. Most members join to create connections with other business people through the networking opportunities presented

by SVCC; others have joined for member benefits such as insurance through Pennsylvania Chamber Insurance (PCI).

FUNDING The Chamber is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization, fully funded by members of the community through contributions, membership dues, and community events.

HISTORY

Ea r ly 20th Century until 1920 - Columbia Merchants and Manufacturers Association (CMMA) is active in the community.

Oc tober 11, 1920 - CMMA changes name to Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

Jul y 7, 1928 - Charter is created for Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce is a memberdriven organization dedicated to preserving and strengthening the Susquehanna Valley’s business and tourism environment by providing programs and services which promote civic, cultural, business and economic growth and development.

Thunder on the River Car Show

The Chamber publishes this annual Information Guide that is distributed through our member businesses, our Visitors Center, as well as in relocation and information packets.

This Information Guide is also delivered to all residences in Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville through the services of Engle Printing and Publishing. All SVCC members are included in the Guide and have the opportunity to place an advertisement at a reduced member rate.

Antique, Art & Craft Show Rivertown Hops Bridge Bust and Small Business Saturday Kick-off of the Christmas Season in the Riverlands

SVCC also works with Engle Publishing to produce Susquehanna River Towns, a guide geared to visitors to the region. This publication includes the history of the area as well as information on activities and events hosted by community organizations. The calendar of events appeals to residents and guests alike.

Outdoor events may be cancelled or postponed to a rain date due to adverse weather conditions.

The Lighted Display Board is a lighted advertising unit that displays an 11 x 14 photo of your business. The size and location of the Lighted Display Board make it a prominent feature of the Visitors Center and give its participating membership a visual presence with real impact. Your rack cards are displayed at your photo, increasing your brochure presence 300%. Our convenient location along Route 30 is often the first stop for visitors to the area; the map at the center of the Lighted Display Board is used by staff and volunteers when giving directions to visitors, again drawing attention to the businesses promoted through this membership category.

SVCC Events August 10, 2019 • 8th Annual

Chiques Challenge Participate in this duathlon event that combines running and kayaking! Registration will begin in Columbia’s River Park. Participants will be transported to Vinegar Ferry Road and run along the river via the Northwest Trail and on through Marietta. There, runners will take to the river aboard a kayak and finish downstream at Columbia. We’ll be leaning on the expertise of Shank’s Mare Outfitters and Chiques Rock Outfitters, our partners in this event.

This event is held rain or shine. Please, NO pets.

From 4:00 p.m. — 8:00 p.m., The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce is partnering with CrocodileDog Marketing to announce… that we hope you will join us at Columbia’s old carnival grounds, home of the new Columbia Animal Shelter, for nearly limitless samples of craft beer, cider, wine, and spirits. Tickets also include access to food trucks, music, and vendors. 25 breweries alongside a smattering of wines, ciders, meads, and spirits for you enjoyment.

Your ticket gets you a sample glass and samples until we don't think you should sample any more. We will make sure there are plenty of food trucks and snack vendors throughout to keep your tummy in prime festival condition. The event is in the grass, so plan accordingly. Columbia Over one mile of vendors will offer Fraternal their wares in the categories of Association antiques, art, crafts, food and specialty items in this unique and popular event. The venue is the Rt. 462 Veterans Memorial Bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville (Lancaster & York County.) The 1.25 mile bridge is closed to traffic for this event. Hours are 8 am – 4 pm. Free parking and free shuttle service is available from both sides of the bridge. Admission is $2 for adults; $1 for children 6 to 12; and children under 6 enter free of charge. Please, NO pets.
