Dear Friends,

A sense of renewal flows through the river towns of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. Development of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, revitalization of the three towns, and a renewed focus on promoting the local region have all contributed to this optimistic spirit. Possibility and potential are among the attitudes that help convince new businesses to locate in our area and become part of this renaissance. There is a positive energy within the area, and the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) is proud to be a part of it.

Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce serves area businesses located in Columbia, Marietta, Wrightsville, and beyond. Investment in SVCC membership is an investment in both local business and the local communities. SVCC provides a wide range of services to our members including assistance in promoting businesses, opportunities for networking, and coordination of grand openings and ribbon cuttings for new businesses. Member events such as mixers, breakfast meetings, and seminars serve to educate members while connecting members to one another. SVCC continually adds to its list of member benefits that will assist our member businesses in their growth and development. Community members are welcome to show their support of this mission by becoming Patron Members of SVCC.

SVCC’s Visitor Center greets over 10,000 guests to the region annually. The center welcomes visitors from nearly every state and from an average of 14 countries per year. Built by Lancaster County Vo-Tech students over 28 years ago and financed through the Chamber of Commerce, the Visitors Center has been maintained solely through local efforts including membership dues and fundraising initiatives. Interested volunteers are always welcome to join us.

SVCC staff coordinates the events which serve the dual purposes of raising funds for the Visitors Center and raising the communities’ visibility. Among these events are the well-known Bridge Bust, the Antique, Art & Craft Show, two 5K runs – the River Run and the MAG Fall Flash – and the popular Chiques Challenge. Promotion of monthly Fourth Friday programming as well as a collaborative effort to produce the Thunder on the River Car Show also serve to increase foot traffic in the local area. Join us for the returning Old Fashioned Christmas Holiday Home Tour. You won’t want to miss the Rivertown Hops, a popular craft brew festival, in August.

Partnerships among communities, their businesses, and their non-profit organizations serve to make all of us stronger and more successful. Chamber membership allows us to join together to accomplish more for our region. SVCC is proud to play a key role in this collaboration.

Chartered in 1928 as the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC) began representing the tri-borough region of Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville in the late 1980s. SVCC most visibly represents the area through its operation of the Visitors Center located along Route 30.

SVCC strives to improve the quality of life and to promote an atmosphere of business cooperation in Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. This mission is easily seen in the SVCC tag line “River Towns Working Together.” SVCC service reaches beyond these river communities on both sides of the Susquehanna River, extending into Lancaster and York Counties in south-central Pennsylvania.

The Chamber and Visitors Center functions under a Board of Directors and is operated by one full-time staff member, three support staff members, and one summer intern with the assistance of over 30 Visitor Center volunteers. Over 100 additional volunteers from the area give of their time at SVCC community fundraising events.

The Visitors Center is operated by the Chamber to provide information to the community, travelers, and tourists to the area. Members of the Chamber may place brochures, flyers, and other promotional items in the Visitors Center. Additional paid advertising is also available to members who wish to be featured in our Lighted Display Board and/or our exterior digital sign.

AFFILIATION

July 7, 1928 - Charter is created for Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is not organizationally a part of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the York County Chamber of Commerce, Discover Lancaster, or the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau. However, we do enjoy reciprocal honorary memberships with these organizations.

MEMBERSHIP

Almost two-thirds of our members come from the tri-borough area of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. Other areas of Lancaster and York Counties as well as regions beyond are represented in our membership. Most members join to create connections with other business people through the networking opportunities presented by SVCC; others have joined for member benefits such as insurance through Pennsylvania Chamber Insurance (PCI).

FUNDING

The Chamber is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization, fully funded by members of the community through contributions, membership dues, and community events. Currently, there is no funding from government organizations, nor are we affiliated with any other sponsoring chambers.

HISTORY

Early 20th Century until 1920 - Columbia Merchants and Manufacturers Association (CMMA) is active in the community. October 11, 1920 - CMMA changes name to Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

1984 - First full-time paid staff members (Secretary and Executive Director) are introduced to the chamber.

Around 1988 - Chamber is renamed Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and covers triborough area of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville.

1989 - Vo-Tech holds design contest and students build new Visitors Center at 445 Linden Street, Columbia, Pa.

PUBLICATIONS and WEB SITE

The Chamber publishes this annual Information Guide that is distributed through our member businesses, our Visitors Center, as well as in relocation and information packets. This Information Guide is also delivered to all residences in Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville through the services of Engle Printing and Publishing. All SVCC members are included in the Guide and have the opportunity to place an advertisement at a reduced member rate.

SVCC also works with Engle Publishing to produce Susquehanna River Towns, a guide geared to visitors to the region. This publication includes the history of the area as well as information on activities and events hosted by community organizations. This calendar of events appeals to residents and guests alike. All SVCC members have the opportunity to place an advertisement.

We are excited to announce that the SVCC website which can be found at www.parivertowns. com, is being redesigned in the summer of 2018. We expect to keep the popular member directory.

Rivertown Hops

The Susquehanna Valley of Commerce is partnering with CrocodileDog Marketing to announce... Rivertown Hops is BACK! Take to the streets of downtown Columbia for nearly limitless samples of craft beer, cider, wine, and spirits. Tickets also include small bites provided by local eateries, music, and vendors. "Hop" on over August 4th, 2018 from 4-8pm. Drink - 20 breweries alongside a smattering of wines, ciders, meads, and spirits for you enjoyment. Your ticket gets you a sample glass and samples until we don't think you should sample any more. Eat - Your ticket includes small bites from local eateries or you can purchase additional food and snacks from a variety of food trucks and vendors. Participate in this duathlon event that combines running and kayaking! Registration will begin in Columbia’s River Park. Participants will be transported to Vinegar Ferry Road and run along the river via the Northwest Trail and on through Marietta. There, runners will take to the river aboard a kayak and finish downstream at Columbia. We’ll be leaning on the expertise of Shank’s Mare Outfitters and Chiques Rock Outfitters, our partners in this event. This event is held rain or shine. Please, NO pets.

Over 300 vendors will offer their wares in the categories of antiques, art, crafts, food and specialty items in this unique and popular event. The venue is the Rt. 462 Veterans Memorial Bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville (Lancaster & York County.) The 1.25 mile bridge is closed to traffic for this event. Hours are 8 am – 4 pm. Free parking and free shuttle service is available from both sides of the bridge. Admission is $2 for adults; $1 for children 6 to 12; and children under 6 enter free of charge. Please, NO pets.

Located on Locust Street in downtown Columbia, this event will run from 10am2pm. Take a walk down memory lane with vintage cars, great music, good friends, and a variety of food. A collaborative effort of the Columbia Lions Club and SVCC, this event features show awards, with numerous trophies to be awarded including Best of Show. Oldies music will serve as a backdrop for a funfilled day. Admission for spectators is free. (NOTE: This event benefits selected local charities as well as the coordinating organizations. This is not solely an SVCC Event.)

June 29, 2019 • 38th Annual Antique, Art & Craft Show

This popular outdoor event runs from 8 am to 2 pm and features 200 vendors filling Locust Street Park and lining the main thoroughfare. Look for a mixture of crafts, antiques, food and entertainment. Free parking is available.

Purpose: Breakfasts can be scheduled March through November. The sponsor may showcase their business or sponsor a speaker or program. Sponsor has the option of selecting the topic for the program with prior approval of the Chamber, or the sponsor may accept topic suggestions from the Chamber. This opportunity affords those in attendance the ability to network and participate in discussions concerning current issues.
