The Technology Student Association (TSA) at Smith Middle School is doing its best to prepare pupils for an ever-changing jobs market. Students are working on projects to get ready for the TSA regionals, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at Conestoga Valley High

School. Students who perform well there will qualify for the state competition with a chance to advance to the national event. There are 37 categories in the contest, including podcasting, children’s stories, robotics, digital photography, forensic technology, and website design. “I am looking forward TSA club members (front, from left) Lennon Zander, to competing and trying Michael Evans, (back) Laz Roten, J.J. The board of directors of the Quarryville Teenage Club faced a quandary. Being forced to cancel the Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant for two straight years had the group at a loss. Ultimately, they found another way to provide scholarship money to deserving young ladies. It could signal the end of girls earning the title of Miss Solanco, but it’s the beginning of opportunities for the students to be crowned Miss Southern L ancaster County or Miss Southern Lancaster County Teen. Scott Peiffer is the president of the Quarryville Teenage Club, whose purpose was to fund and operate the annual pageant that took place at Solanco High School the Saturday after Thanksgiving. “We haven’t had a (Miss Solanco) pageant now for the second year in a row,” he said. “The reason is there’s just a lack of contestants. We can’t have a pageant unless we have six contestants. It costs too much. We can’t do it. We’ve opened it up wider (to include high school juniors in addition to seniors) to try and get more girls, but there’s just not the interest in it.” So the club went back to the drawing board to brainstorm ways to rejuvenate the event. The first Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant was held in 1956, and the crown was contested every year except for 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025. Its future is in serious jeopardy. “It’s a shame because it was, we had many, many girls come back and say how valuable that was to them,”

For the competition, I can’t wait to show everybody the project me and my team have been working on these past few weeks, and I can’t wait to see everyone else’s project that they have

also been working on. One I can’t wait to see is dragster because they have been working really hard, and so have us all.” Club member Har per Ryan said, “I think it’s really enjoyable, and I am looking forward to getting to present my children’s story to elementary kids.” Shortes, a Millersville University graduate with a

were both asked to contribute. “(Crotti has) been an artist in the calendar for many years,” Epler said. “She said, ‘Well, you could do a pencil drawing instead of pen and ink,’ so then I said, ‘OK.’ They gave me two photos. That particular post office bounced around to different places over the years, because of the fact when somebody was appointed postmaster, it was usually a store owner, like in an old-fashioned country store. The store owner would be appointed postmaster, and then it would move to his store.” This iteration of May Post Office is not located on May Post Office Road. The building is still standing on the corner of Dry Walls Road and Pumping Station Road. Epler did not expect to have her drawing selected for the cover. “I was really surprised, because I know the artists that are in here, and I was thinking my stuff is not nearly as good as their work.” Stan White, the historical society director who does the calendar layout, said, “They were both very nice pictures taken by Mike Roth, and she couldn’t decide which one she wanted to do, so she did them both. At that point it became an easy decision. They were both lovely, and we asked her if she wouldn’t mind applying color to one of them.” Other artists are featured in each month of the calendar. January features Martie Brown with artwork of Reynolds/Brabson Farmhouse. Brown is a self-taught artist who specializes in colored pencil and watercolor. She is a member of the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) and was president at the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society through 2025. February is Marie Nickle, who highlighted Winter Hill School. She taught art for several years with the 4-H and was a member of the LCAA. March features Fr y ’s Store at McCall’s Ferry by Joleen D. Teenage Club from pg 1 Peiffer said. “They loved it.” T h e Te e n a g e C l u b attempted to recruit contestants through social media and by reaching out to local dance studios, but those efforts p ro ve d f r u i t l e s s . “ We finally got the point where like, what are we going to do here?” Peiffer said. “ We’re eventually going to run out of money because we pay insurance and the liability and that kind of stuff. It just costs us ever y year, and we don’t have a pageant. The ticket sales is where you get your money from and the advertising in your program.”

The Miss Solanco competition had ear ned a sterling reputation in the state pageant community. Several Miss Solanco winners went on to fare well in the Miss Pennsylvania contest. Peiffer’s daughter, Marla, was a state r unner-up. “ T he M iss America Organizations (MAO) has approached us already before about becoming a Miss America Organization scholarship pageant ,” Peiffer said. “We avoided it because I didn’t really want to do that.” But the steep decline in the number of Miss Solanco contestants caused the Quarr yville

Teenage Club to reevaluate. The club had already developed a strong relationship with Miss Lancaster County system directors Reji and Audra Woods. “The idea resurfaced again, so we reached out and explained that we don’t really know what els e to do here ,” s aid Peiffer. “ They said, ‘We would love to have you help in some fashion.’” Peiffer suggested the creation of a Miss Souther n L anc aster Count y title, with the scholarship money furnished by the Quarryville Teenage Club. The Miss Lancaster County system was happy to accept. Miss Southern

L ancaster County and Miss Southern Lancaster County Outstanding Teen titles were awarded during the Miss Lancaster County pageant in Ephrata on Sept. 27. Christina Herman was crowned Miss Southern L ancaster County, and Susannah Schelling was named Miss S outher n Lancaster County Outstanding Teen. “It seems to work, and I think we’re going to continue to do this,” Peiffer said. State residents are elig ible to compete in any Pennsylvania MAO competition, and neither winner is from the South-

ern End, but Christina and Susannah will attend local activities. “We had a little reception, and they are two wonderful, wonderful girls, and they’re willing to try and represent the Southern End at events,” Peiffer said. “We tried to salvage what we could, rather than just say, ‘OK, we’re done.’” Peiffer is hopeful that students from Solanco will enter future Miss Southern Lancaster C o u n t y co m p e t i t i o n s . “Hopefully we can get some girls from Solanco High School,” Peiffer said. “I think that’s the thing that what I would want to stress, that the girls in

the district can compete next year. Hopefully from here on out, you know, a couple of kids from here will go and try. That’d be great. We’d love it, and the club would be ver y supportive of them.” He is pleased with the debut of the new titles. “ We’ve known Reji and Audra because our girls were in the system b e f o r e ,” s a i d Pe i f f e r. “Our daughter was in the system. I audited at their pageant one year. They are super nice people, really good with those kids. It was a good fit, and they were absolutely ecstatic that we would support them with that.”

E v e r y N e w Ye a r ’ s Day, the roar of engines becomes a rallying cry for local veterans as hundreds of motorcycle riders hit the road for a cause. The tradition will continue on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, with the 17th annual benefit ride, an energetic kickoff to the year that blends camaraderie, charity and a 25-mile scenic convoy along the Susquehanna River. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Walter S . E bersole Amer ican L eg ion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Riders will depart at 1 p.m., traveling the river route before ending at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Before the engines rev, members of the auxiliary will serve breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion. After the ride, participants can enjoy a pork and sauerkraut dinner at the Elizabethtown post. Years ago, a group of friends got together and decided the best way to ring in the new year was by doing something they love - riding their motorcycles. They put together the event to raise funds for veterans at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “All of the money we raise goes directly to the veterans,” shared Michael Hehnly, finance officer for the Mount Joy American Legion. “They can use that money to buy hygiene items or other things they may need.” Last year’s ride raised $40,000, he said. Over the years, the event has garnered almost $350,000 for veterans. Even with its serious mission, the day is full of fun and fellowship. Each year, one participant is

named Baby New Year and arrives in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Mike Kaylor. Although motorcycles make up the majority of the convoy, the event is open to all types of vehicles, and no Legion affiliation is required for participants. More than 450 people joined the ride last year, Michael said, noting that one of his favorite aspects of the event is experiencing the waves and shouts of encouragement from people who watch the convoy as it travels past their house along the route. Local businesses also contribute to the event. Hummer’s Meats donates the post-ride meal, and Hummelstown Print House makes the event T-shirts. “A ny b u s i n e s s t h a t would like to donate is invited to,” Michael said. “We’ll be collecting donations up until the day of the ride.” For Michael and his wife, Lori, the ride is personal. Both are veterans, a nd b o t h u nd e rs t a nd the importance of giving back. While Michael will ride in the convoy, Lori, who also rides, will not join the group that day but will instead help to prepare the post-meal activities at the Elizabethtown Legion. “We do this ride in any kind of weather,” Michael said. “It’s a really fun tradition, but more importantly, it’s a way to support our veterans. They’ve given so much to us, and we just want to give back to them.” For more information or to register in advance for the ride, visit https://bit .ly/3D3WAZb or call 717629-7754. Participants may also register on the day of the event.
