Lila Good won an art contest she didn’t know she had entered.
Her watercolor painting was chosen as the artwork featured on the front of Solanco School District’s Christmas card.
“I had no idea about (the Christmas card competition) until (teacher) Ms. (Shannon) VanGyzen told me in mid-November that mine was selected,” Lila said. “I was happy. I didn’t really understand what (the contest) was, but I do now.”
Lila used a photograph she had taken as a guide for the painting she made in February as part of a class assignment. “We had to do watercolor landscapes, so I chose a picture that I took that I liked of my driveway,” she said.
Humble by nature, Lila stated that she wasn’t sure how good the painting was. “I feel like when you make something, you can never truly look at it how someone else would, and you can’t tell how good it is or how bad it is or anything,” she said.
While Lila was uncertain about the quality of her work, no one else seemed to

Maya Dolan recently played her final game as a member of the Penn State Berks women’s soccer team.
Nittany Lions’ coach Adrian Munteanu won’t soon forget her contributions.
Maya, a 2022 graduate of Solanco High School, enjoyed a stellar senior season as a starting defender on the Penn State
Berks squad that finished the year with a record of 8-9-2.
“Maya brought not just a lot of quality to our program, but she was the type of player that every coach should be proud of having her as part of their program,” Munteanu said. “She brought team cohesion. She cares about her teammates. She bought in to what we did here, and then she got the opportunity to

Within the complex world of nonprofits there exists a separate, supportive world - the world of grants.
Subsidized by philanthropic foundations, organizations and businesses, financial grants serve a very practical purpose. But also associated with grants are this connectivity piece and a very specific affirming element.
“Anytime we receive a grant it’s a communication of trust,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of North Star Initiative (NSI) for three years. “It means that people and organizations see the importance of our mission. It means we can do amazing work for (human trafficking survivors), and they’re flourishing. It’s a vote of confidence and support for our mission.”
On Oct. 20, NSI, a Lititz-area nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals who have been victims of human trafficking, received a $15,000 grant for daily operations from B.J.’s Wholesale Club, which is headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and operates a local location at 110 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The grant process, which was initiated by a local supporter and volunteer of NSI, took about four months to complete.
After B.J.’s Wholesale Club invited NSI to apply for the grant, NSI composed a formal grant proposal and submitted it, after which the request was granted.

be. “Watercolor is known for being one of the most unforgiving of painting mediums because it builds with transparent layers, allowing little to no room for mistakes,” said VanGyzen. “In ‘Winter Driveway,’ Lila captures the quiet beauty of an overcast winter day with a really thoughtful sense of color. However, what stands out most is how she handled the snow. She used the untouched white of the paper to achieve its brightness, a choice that requires careful planning and an impressive level of restraint for an artist her age.”

said Lila. “I think she understands how to help us, and everything she teaches is for a reason, like learning how to do value with white charcoal instead on black paper instead of white paper with black charcoal, so you can understand how the light works and everything.”
Lila also enjoys other instruments besides a paint brush. “I really like to work with colored pencils, and I made a drawing of flowers with just red, blue, and yellow, and I like how it turned out,” she said.
Lila, who remembers being about 5 years old when she
discovered she enjoyed art, last year captured a Gold Award for a portrait she did of a friend. She is considering studying art in college and making a career out of it.
“I don’t know what else I would do,” she said. “I don’t want to be an art teacher, but I definitely want to have art somewhere in (my life).”

After attending Solanco High full time as a freshman and sophomore, Lila is being homeschooled in her junior year but does come to the school every other weekday for an art class. She noted that the school’s art teachers make the trip worthwhile. “I think Ms. VanGyzen is a really good teacher,”

not only experience a lot of success on the soccer field, but also creating friendships and bonding with her teammates.”
The Nittany Lions’ season came to a close with a 4-0 defeat to top-seeded Penn State Harrisburg Nov. 4 in the semifinals of the United East Conference.
In the quarterfinals on Nov. 1, Maya scored the game’s first goal by heading home a corner kick taken by Devin Deery in Penn State Berks’ 2-1 triumph over Lancaster Bible College. “Devin had a good cross from the corner, and there I was,” Maya said.
“She scored a great goal to get us the lead against Lancaster Bible,” Munteanu said. “She does exactly what we ask her to do, and she leads the team in big moments, and she’s just a prime example of the player that, as I said, exemplifies being a role model.”
Maya saw limited playing time as a freshman at Penn State Berks before breaking into the starting lineup in her second season and becoming a captain as a senior. “I’m really grateful for all opportunities,” she said. “I just really love my team, and I love everything we done together, so it means a lot.”
Munteanu said, “She came in every day to training with the mindset of trying to get better. Every day was a process, and then her evolution as a player from day one when we broke her in as a freshman to this day when she graduated as a senior, it’s huge, and we’re proud to have her part of our program. I think we’re not only going to miss her as a player, but we will miss her as a person and what she’s done her career.”
“I love Berks,” Maya said. “I

love the team and the coaches. Everyone’s really supportive.”
Maya closed out her college career by helping the Nittany Lions win four of their final five contests. “We were good,” she said. “We started off a little rough, then it got better.”
Maya enjoyed a successful season despite playing with a slight tear in her left knee. “It just kind of felt worse over time,” she said. “There was a little tear in it, so just like a little tweak, but it’s OK. We got a good athletic training staff, so it’s all right.”
Maya will graduate either in December or in the spring with a degree in hospitality management and a minor in business, and she plans to pursue a job in the event planning industry. “It’s kind of crazy,” she said of her college years. “It went really fast.”
Maya also left a legacy at Solanco. A four-year starter, in 2019 she played an integral role on the first Mules’ team to qualify for the district playoffs. Sixteenth-seeded Solanco shocked top-seeded Lower Dauphin in the first round and then defeated Fleetwood in a penalty-kick shootout in round two. Maya’s sister, Gabi, a senior that year, was Solanco’s starting goalie.
When Maya was a senior, the Mules posted a playoff win at rival Lampeter-Strasburg.

Maya noted she is grateful for the encouragement from her family and coaches, including Ken Yoder and Matt Jansen at Solanco and Munteanu and assistant Tom Gosselin at Penn State Berks. “They’re really supportive,” she said. “They have a lot of really good advice. They’re always there to help out.”

“It’s a big part of our annual budget and a grant we haven’t gotten before,” said Clark. “To have a local tie to a national business is meaningful. I’d say that it’s larger than average. It’s a really big deal to us.”
“B.J.’s has a deep commitment to supporting families in the communities where we live and work,” said Kirk Saville, B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s head of corporate communications. “We are honored to continue supporting the organizations our team members care about most and to live our purpose of taking care of families who depend on us.”
With assistance and input from Clark, NSI development director April Miller wrote and composed the B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant application in about six hours.
To this point of 2025, NSI has applied for 13 total financial grants, five of which were approved and four of which were declined, while the status of the other four have yet to be determined. NSI is planning to apply for three more grants before the end of the year.
“April was primarily responsible for this B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant,” said Clark. “We want to make sure it’s a match. In B.J.’s case, we were recommended to them; they invited us to provide an extensive application of what the money would be used for. We had to be clear we were doing things that fit their purposes. By their bylaws, they have to make donations. We have to be a committed nonprofit doing good work in a cause. We want human trafficking to end. If we can show we’re truly making a difference, we’re also providing an opportunity that grant makers are looking for.”
Grants represent about 10% of NSI’s annual operating budget. The largest source of NSI’s funding - about 50% - comes from the local community, including business donations, private donations and fundraising efforts.
Typically, the grants that NSI receives range between $3,000 and $50,000.
“There are so many grant-making entities,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “There are a lot of philanthropists who have some funds and are looking for specific causes. They have a heart to be generous to the causes that matter to them. It’s become competitive because there are so many nonprofits. There are always opportunities for generosity to causes that
matter to you.”
“The grant programs are important to us, and they can come in chunks,” added Clark. “Grant funding is exciting, and it makes a difference, but a lot of grant makers don’t fund daily operations.”
With a focus on assisting survivors of human trafficking in Lancaster and Berks counties, NSI provides services like job training, an emergency shelter, restoration and

The 2025 Solanco CROP Walk took place at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood in October. The walk had 93 participants representing 11 community churches and organizations.
Walkers who arrived early had the opportunity to paint messages of hope on small rocks that were placed along the trail for others to find. Many participants in the 5-mile walk also carried signs featuring messages of hope. Before the event, Teresa Dolan from Solanco Neighborhood Ministries spoke to attendees and shared an update on the work being done by the organization. Participants also enjoyed a time of fellowship and refreshments before and after the walk.
The funds raised totaled $21,390, the third-highest amount raised since the Solanco CROP Walk began in 1980. The Solanco CROP Walk has raised more than $501,000 since it began. This year, Church World Service will receive 75% of the funds, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries will receive 25%.

But everything we do is because of community funding. Most of our funding comes from local people. We exist because the whole community is behind us.”
