OnOct. 22, Lancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year.

The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.

The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”

Each year, the Josie Music Awards

recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.

“When it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville for five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record. “It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album.

Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her

musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up. “Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.

The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz; and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

Girl Scout Cadettes Isabella Wagner, Victoria Dunlap, Anna Marie Rineer and Ava Marie Martin received the Silver Award on Oct. 25 at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church. The Silver Award is the highest award Girl Scout Cadettes, or girls between sixth and eighth grades, can achieve.

The Scouts finished their applications for the award as eighthgraders and are now freshmen at

Solanco High School; the awards were first given by Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) via a virtual ceremony prior to the event in October at Chestnut Level. As a prerequisite for the Silver Award, each Scout needed to complete a journey award by selecting a community topic that is important to her. The Scouts needed to plan and coordinate their projects, and each spent 50 hours total on the planning and execution of her individual endeavor.

Throughout the year, a variety of churches and local organizations in the Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco areas help those in need by operating foods banks for the community, and demand often rises once the winter months arrive. Although the organizations share the same goal of meeting locals’ basic needs, each food bank can vary in

ular season runs through June, with playoffs running into July.

Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM), 13 S. Church St., Quarryville, offers assistance to families in crisis and allows them to use its food bank once every three months until they get back on their feet. Families can visit the food bank to meet with SNM volunteers, who will verify personal information and discuss what other needs the organization can assist with. For more information, call 717786-4308.

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, operates a food pantry that is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and the first and third Saturdays of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. The pantry functions similarly to a grocery store; visitors can browse its shelves and select the specific items they need, such as canned foods, meat, fruits, vegetables, pasta and cereal.

LUMC’s pantry also offers personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, deodorant and toilet paper, and it includes a section with diapers, formula and baby food for families with infants. During the holidays, the church stocks its pantry with seasonal items like stuffing and ingredients for pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. Visitors to the food pantry are able to take advantage of its offerings once per month, with no requirement for eligibility; LUMC only asks that the community reserve the pantry for those in need. If unable to visit the pantry during regular hours, people can set up an appointment by calling 717-464-4161.

“We find that more people come in during the winter months and over the holidays, and the sizes of families coming in are getting larger,” said Ivan Haines, a coordinator for the food pantry at LUMC. “The pantry gives people that come a lift; we want it to be a bright spot in the lives of people who are struggling.” LUMC also offers a free community meal on the first Wednesday of each month from 5 to 6:15 p.m.

Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, also runs a food pantry, with hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon At the Mission Church pantry, families are able

nonperishable food per household each month, and visitors must verify their name and address by presenting a form of identification.

Strasburg First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, operates a food bank on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. Similarly to LUMC’s pantry, visitors may select their own items, including dairy products, bread, personal hygiene items, paper items and occasionally meat.

A note from Brent regarding “The Roar Within”...

In these events I take the guys through their identity in Christ, where do the lies come from that we buy into, and how we untangle whose lies. I call it, “declawing the lies of the enemy.” I also take the guys through the Big 5 Man-Killers that destroy every man (lack of purpose, lack of respect, anger, lust, and shame), and I do this using the Big 5 African animals tying each one of those struggles to each one of the animals. It’s a powerful way to hold their attention and give them the tools they need to defeat the enemy.

When first deciding on their projects, the Scouts submitted their ideas to their troop leaders, who then provided feedback and assistance with developing the plans. After reviewing their projects with troop leaders, the Scouts then submitted a form to GSHPA to be considered for the award.

For her project, Wagner decided to collect backpacks and fill them with personal items to be gifted to children in foster care. Each backpack was filled with items the children would need if they moved to another home.

Rineer orchestrated Christmas in July at Chestnut Level Presbyterian for her project, bringing Christmas events to the church and children in the parish. Rineer and the children made Christmas ornaments, which were used to decorate the tree inside the fellowship hall.

Martin helped to teach young softball players about the importance of warming up and practicing sports safety while playing. As an avid softball player herself, Martin used her project as an opportunity to help young players prevent injuries early in their careers.

Dunlap coached a group of younger soccer players in Solanco for her project, helping them hone their skills and leading them through warmups and a variety of activities.

Every Tuesday night, over 80 kids from kindergarten to 12th grade meet at Chestnut Level Presbyterian, and each of the four recently honored Girl Scouts have been involved with the program since kindergarten. “It’s exciting to see the younger kids come in and learn from the older kids as they go up through the ranks,” said Amy Rineer, one of the leaders of Troop 71266. Once the girls reach 10th grade, they will have an opportunity to earn the Gold Award, the highest achievement available to Girl Scouts in high school and the equivalent of an Eagle Scout Award.

Experience the journey that led Mary and Joseph to the stable where Jesus was born. A group leader will take you along a lighted path to four different scenes. You will hear and see the story of the angel with Mary and Joseph, to the Inn of Bethlehem and to the Shepherds. The wise men and you will follow the same star to the stable. - Begin your journey by a campfire with a cookie and a cup of hot chocolate or warm cider. - No cost for the journey. Canned goods/gift cards to Solanco Food Bank would be a gracious donation. These will be collected at the welcome area, if you so choose to donate. - Golf carts will be available for those not comfortable or able to walk. - In case of inclement weather, the Journey will take place inside the church.

Solanco Earns Six Medals at Mule Classic

Solanco’s matmen hosted the Annual Mule Classic on Friday and Saturday, December 2-3. Six of ten wrestlers competing earned medals, contributing to Solanco’s 7th (96 points) place team finish, edging Penn Manor who settled for 8th place (88.5 points) out of 25. Central Dauphin earned the team title with 206 points.

Jared Fulton (145), a state qualifier last season, was Solanco’s top finisher. The senior pinned his way to the finals, decking Downingtown East’s Scott Zhang (:25), Kennett’s Michael Pepe (1:25) and Blue Mountain’s Payton Fasnacht (1:17). In the finals, Fulton faced CD’s Matt Repos, a state runner-up last year, and was dealt a 13-0 major decision.

“Repos is tough,” said head coach Tony Mendez, “but Jared had a good tournament. He wasn’t really challenged until he met Repos.”

Caden Rutt (107) and Blaine Plastino (172) chipped in with a pair of bronze medals.

Rutt opened against CD’s Thunder Beard, the eventual second place finisher, and suffered a 15-1 loss. He bounced back with four straight consolation wins to medal.

“Caden had a tough first match but recovered and wrestled very well through the consolation rounds,” said Mendez.

Plastino’s journey was similar. He opened with fall and a 5-1 decision before suffering a 4-2 loss to Dallastown’s Isaiah Feeney, the eventual 172-pound champ. He rebounded with a 4:38 consolation fall and then survived Mason Keller (Pennsbury) 6-5 to get the bronze.

Next to medal was Andrew Smith. The 139-pounder fell just short of fifth place, suffering a 3-2 loss to Blue Mountain’s Owen Woll.

“That was disappointing,” said Mendez. “Andrew was up 2-1, working an armbar pinning combo and was called for stalling. I was pretty upset with that call, but that’s sports sometimes. It changed the momentum. Woll got a point and then on the restart escaped with 14 seconds left to win.

“He also had a tough second match, losing to Oxford’s Austin McMillian, the eventual champ,” Mendez added.

Earning a seventh-place medal was Ben Williams (152) while Aidan Ruiz (127) settled for eighth place.

“Ben lost to Tyler Maiers, the eventual second place winner, in a match he probably could have won,” said Mendez. “He wrestled very well and improved as the tournament progressed. If he wrestled Maiers at the end of the tournament, it could have been a different outcome.

“And Aidan was in one of the tougher weight classes,” he continued. “He’s a first-year starter but comes in with high expectations. He went 2-2 but I was happy to see him place considering who was in this weight class.”

At the Mule Classic on Friday, December 2 Solanco’s Ben Williams, wrestling at 152, opened the touranment with a 7-2 decisioin over John Carroll’s Trevyn Suskowicz. Williams went on to earn a seventh place medal.

Also competing was Bradeon Bickford (114), Nathan Smith (121), Cole Harris (189) and Jamar Moore (285).

“Overall, everyone feels that starting a week earlier this year, after just 10 practices, is too soon. But we’re all in the same boat. We still have things to work on and expect to fill two more weight classes in the near future so it’s still hard to know what to expect,” the coach said.

“We also know that we couldn’t host this tournament without the wrestling association and all the alumni, volunteers and parents that help out.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

After a season with just two wins, the boys’ basketball team took a step in the right direction, opening the season with a solid 53-40 victory over Oxford in the first round of the Octorara Tip Off tournament, Friday, December 2.

After three closely contested quarters, the Mules took control when they buckled down in the fourth, outscoring the Hornets 19-6 to break a 34-34 game.

“I thought we came out a little nervous but in the third quarter we started executing more on offense and buckled down defensively to put them away,” said head coach Anthony Hall.

Senior captain Tyler Burger, after a year off, tossed in a game-high 16 points, including 6-of-13 from the foul line, an area in which both teams struggled. Solanco went 15for-31 from the stripe while the hosts were a slim 8-of-26.

Noah Baber followed with 14

points and Noah Bailey, with three triples, also hit double figures with 11. Brock Osborne (6), Jadon Yoder (5), Austin Wenger (2) and Manny Himes (1) also reached the scoring column.

In the championship game against Octorara one night later, a slow start played a key role in Solanco’s 65-55 loss. Despite outscoring the Braves 32-27 in the second half, the Mules could not overcome a 38-23 first half deficit. Three pointers were also pivotal as Octorara canned eight shots from downtown while the Mule hit three.

“We basically lost to experience,” said Hall, “but we didn’t give up. They just executed better. They did not outwork us. They got up by 20 and we cut it to ten.”

Burger went 4-for-5 from the free throw line and netted a teamhigh 18 points. Yoder followed with 17 points, including two of Solanco’s three-pointers, and Bailey rounded out the double-digit scorers, netting ten.

“Both Ty Burger and Jayden Yoder played very well,” Hall added. “We’re expecting even more from them. And Elijah Cunningham did a great job defending.

“Our main goal is to compete every night and we did that. I was very happy.”

In just the third game of the season, Solanco matched last years’ win total. Last Wednesday the Mules jumped out to a 38-23 halftime lead and cruised to a 61-35 victory over N. Lebanon. Solanco was 14-for-17 from the free throw line in the first half and 18-of-23 for the game. Bailey dropped in a gamehigh 19 points, 14 in the first half. He knocked down three triples. Cunningham and Burger each added seven points while Baber hit all nine of his in the first half.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

After winning just three games last season, the girls’ basketball team opened the 2022 season with a 4241 thriller at Twin Valley Friday, December 2.

Tied at 9-9 in the first quarter, Solanco took a six-point lead with a 12-6 second frame advantage. Jenna Ehlers knocked down a pair of triples and hit a free throw to spark the scoring and her team-high 13 point night. And Sarah Landis, taking a diagonal pass from Kara Peace, scored a layup at the halftime buzzer to gain some momentum at the break.

Neither team gained much ground in the third quarter, but the hosts rallied down the stretch, outscoring Solanco 13-9 to make for a thrilling finish. They canned 8-of12 free throws over the final minutes to keep things interesting. Solanco struggled at the line, going 10-for21 on the night and 5-of-10 in the fourth quarter.

“We held the lead for almost the entire game but in the middle of the fourth quarter we went cold and could not find a way to score,” said head coach Chad McDowell.

Twin Valley forged ahead 41-39 but that was short-lived as Ehlers hit two free throws to tie the game. After a defensive stop, Arianna Seiberlich got out in transition and was fouled with 2.8 seconds left. She made one of two in the double bonus putting Solanco back in front.

“They had one last shot but missed,” said McDowell. “We did make three free throws in those last 30 seconds to secure the win.

Ehlers led a balanced scoring attack with Sarah Landis (8), Arianna Seiberlich (7), Frances Northern (6), Josie Janssen (4), Paige Althoff (2) and Madison Harnish (2) also contributing. Landis also hauled in six rebounds with Althoff and Peace snagging three steals each.

In another thriller last Wednesday, Solanco fought off a 24-18 first half deficit with a 16-7 run through the third quarter but fell short down the stretch. York used a 19-13 fourth quarter advantage to steal a 50-47 victory at home.

Solanco shot just 8-of-19 from the free throw line and was outscored 18-3 from three-point range.

Ehlers netted a team-high 13 points and Landis added 12 as the double figure scorers.
