ZacBauermaster lives in Quarryville, where he was born and raised, but his career has taken him across the county to work in many other school districts. After graduating from SolancoHigh School in 2005, he earned his undergraduate degree in secondary education from Millersville University as well as a master’s degree in educational technology from Penn State University. Bauermaster has also earned a doctorate in educational leadership and his

superintendent letter of eligibility from Drexel University.

Bauermaster worked in the Solanco School District for eight years, teaching ninth grade at Solanco High School for three years and serving as the principal and learning administrator for five years at Swift Middle School. Bauermaster then became the assistant principal at Manheim Central High School, followed by his time as the head principal of Kissel Hill Elementary in Warwick, where he currently works and will remain until the end of December. Over

winter break, Bauermaster will officially transition to Providence Elementary to fill the role of principal.

Part of Bauermaster’s philosophy and approach to life is perpetual motion; he loves to learn and constantly broadens his perspective with new experiences and undertakings. “I’ve learned a lot through my different experiences because I don’t get too comfortable,” Bauermaster said. “The past five and a half years outside of Solanco, I’ve been able to find my leadership voice and meet a lot of wonderful people.”

The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) will sell Christmas decorations and custom-made wreaths on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4, from noon to 3 p.m.

The sale serves as the organization’s largest yearly fundraiser and helps to cover its operating expenses, and it will be held in the small brick warehouse across from the birthplace of Robert Fulton, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will host an Advent service on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m.

The yearly event will include several festive Scottish traditions, performances from members of the congregation and local musicians and holiday treats.

“Even though (the service) has a heavy Scottish and Celtic theme, we want to promote the Christmas season through Advent,” said

Bauermaster also noted that Solanco taught him much as a both student and teacher, and he looks forward to returning. Aside from the added bonus of the much shorter commute, Bauermaster is excited to be deeply rooted in his community once more. Although he is grateful for his time in other parts of the county, Bauermaster can’t wait to teach in the district where his own children attend school, where he coaches youth sports teams and where he attends church.

In July, Bauermaster published his first book, titled “Leading With a Humble Heart.” He first began working on the book last year, when Jimmy Casas, CEO of ConnectEd, heard about the idea and contacted Bauermaster to learn more. Bauermaster shared his vision with Casas, and Casas decided to move it forward.

“Leading With a Humble Heart” is a 40-day devotional, with each section relaying a lesson Bauermaster has learned from people encountered throughout his career, which he ties in with Scripture. “It all goes back to the Bible,” Bauermaster said. “You can find some of the greatest leadership lessons in Scripture, both successes and failures.”

Bauermaster is donating all proceeds from his book sales in November to his former student Colin Buffington and his family, who are serving as missionaries in Western Honduras. “The best part of education is seeing kids you taught using their gifts to serve the world

and communities after school,” Bauermaster said. “It can be challenging raising mission funds, so I wanted to fnd a way to give back to (Buffington) and his family.”

Holiday Meal Delivery Set

The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant

Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution.

Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

Advent Service

Daniel Henry, vice president of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation.

Pastor John Barlow will give an opening prayer at the beginning of the service, and Henry will give a welcome to attendees. Musical acts will follow Henry’s welcome, such as performances from local accordionist Shirley Girvin and the Solanco High School jazz band. “I love the community integration of the service,” said Henry. “A lot of local families and kids usually come out to see the jazz band.”

Donald and Becki Henderson will sing traditional Gaelic Christmas songs, and Donald, who is on the board of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, will read the Christmas story in the Braid Scots dialect. Richard Keene, another member of the foundation, will sing “O Holy Night,” and bagpiper Ruth Fisher will perform during the service as well. Fisher also serves as a judge for the yearly bagpiping competition at the Covenanter Scottish Highlands Festival in Quarryville.

After the service, refreshments and holiday treats will be available in the social hall.

Before the service, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the school room museum on the property will be open to the public. Volunteers will be present at the museum to tell stories from the church’s history and several schools that used operate in the area. The museum also contains artifacts and memorabilia from the county’s earlier days.

“We’re pleased to be able to maintain and restore the museum and the old church,” said Henry. “We hope people come to learn more about our history and have a chance to hear traditional Scottish music and learn about the culture.”

The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation raised over $13,000 at the Highlands Festival in September and hopes to add restrooms to the historic Middle Octorara Church building to allow for services to be held there. In the meantime, the church will host events and services in the newer building.

Mules Fall in District Three 5A Semifinal

It’s always a challenge to play the same team twice in one season. That challenge becomes even bigger when it comes down to the ‘win or go home’ portion of the schedule. Solanco faced that exact scenario Friday, November 18 when they hosted No. 12 seed Cocalico in the District Three Class 5A championship.

The Mules, longtime rivals of the Eagles when they were in Section Two, defeated Cocalico 21-7 in a non-league game on September 2. But that was 11 weeks ago. The Eagles were in attendance when the Mules survived Shippensburg in the district quarterfinals.

“It is difficult to play a team twice,” said head coach Tony Cox. “It was a battle the first time. It was a chess match this time.”

And this time around, it was Cocalico with the upper hand. The Eagles ended the top seeded Mules’ historic run with a 32-8 victory, and their hope for a first-ever district final appearance.

The Eagles held a slim 7-0 lead at the half after a Josh Myer three-yard touchdown run.

Sam Steffey, however, was the deal-breaker in the second half. The junior rushed for a total of 251 yards on 31 carries, scoring a hat trick of touchdowns, including two in the third quarter. His rushing total is 1,728 to date.

Steffey opened the second half scoring with a 12-yard carry and added a 45-yard touchdown run later in the frame. Solanco (11-1) blocked the extra point kick and denied the Eagles on the twopoint conversion.

Holding a 19-0 lead to start the fourth quarter, the Eagles made it 25-0 before the Mules, who captured the school’s first-ever undefeated regular season, finally got on the board. Elijah Cunningham snagged a 35-yard strike from Brody Mellinger and Josiah Forren, who finished with 60 all-purpose yards, converted the two-point run with 4:46 left in the game, but it wasn’t enough. The Eagles, winning its sixth straight game and improving to 10-4 overall, capped the scoring on Steffey’s six-yard run. Forren and Nick Defrancesco highlighted the defensive efforts with 13 tackles each.

Despite the season ending loss, both Forren (1,008) and Cole Harris (1,001) capped their careers with over 1,000 rushing yards on the season. After the game, with the team huddled together, Cox said, “Don’t hand your heads. You had a phenomenal season. No one expected us to get this far.”

And then Solanco’s 22 seniors took their final walk across the field and handed the reins over to the underclassmen. “Now we get back to work,” said Cox.

Anti-littering Youth Contest Posted

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups.

The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video. In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.”

Projects include a poster for chil-

dren in kindergarten through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.

Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations.

The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. For more information, downloadable promotional posters, and an online entry form, visit www.keeppa beautiful.org and select Awards under Grants & Awards. For more details, contact Michelle Dunn at mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org or 877-772-3673, ext. 113.

Creative Works To Stage Sock Puppet Show

Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.

On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Sock-a,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.

“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard boats as five actorpuppeteers wield a cast of more than 30 customdesigned, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander

Bannon. Musical director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.

Creative Works’ pay what you decide (PWYD) ticketing model guarantees that no one will be turned away due to financial limitations. Audience members are asked to reserve a ticket in advance and pay what they think the experience was worth after the performance.

Tickets can be reserved at www.zoetropolis.com. Those who reserve a ticket will be sent a PWYD link after the performances. Tickets may also be available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.

Creative Works of Lancaster receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Learn more about Creative Works at www.creativelancaster.org.

Each year, members of the historical society and a group of volunteers meet to cut fresh greens from pine trees and other bushes and drop them off at the historical society’s archive building. “We rely on people to allow us to prune their plants for the material,” said Stan White, president of SLCHS. “It can be a bit of a dance figuring out where to send our volunteers.” The group will often gather the material from campgrounds, private nurseries and yards that people have offered to them.

The following Monday, the volunteers will arrive at 9 a.m. and spend the day assembling wreaths and other decorations. Each item is unique and handcrafted by the volunteers over coffee

Agency Offers 2023 Calendars

VisionCorps has largeprint 2023 calendars available now. The 2023 calendar is 21.5 by 17 inches when opened, and each date square is 2.25 by 2.75 inches.

The cover of the calendar is in color. The inside calendar pages are in black and white for contrast, and the numbers are large and in bold print, making them easier to see.

For more information on how to purchase a calendar, contact Linda at lconyers@ visioncorps.net or 717-2054116. Calendars will be sent out in the mail.

and lunch. “We always have a blast down there making stuff,” Stan said.

As a secondary fundraiser, SLCHS will also sell its yearly calendar. Each year’s calendar features a different artist’s work on the cover, along with multiple artists’ interpretations of the historic Southern End. This year, the committee selected artwork by Linda White, wife of Stan White, to feature on the calendar’s cover.

The piece on the cover of the calendar is Linda’s drawing of the Ankrum house, located on Furnace Road in Drumore Township. The house itself is now dilapidated, but the drawing depicts the home in its former glory. Linda was able to acquire old photographs from the descendants of the Ankrum family, which she used as a reference for her drawing.

“The house is close to my own, and I always think to myself that if I were younger and had the money, I would fix it up,” Linda said. “It’s a lot of fun to go through the calendar and see depictions of places that are no longer there or look very different today.”

The calendar may be purchased by visiting the SLCHS building at the birthplace of Robert Fulton in Quarryville, which is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and every second and fourth Saturday of the month,. The calendar may also be purchased at Kreider’s Market, 2396 Kirkwood Pike, Kirkwood, and Maplehofe Dairy, 799 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. SLCHS asks that those planning on visiting its location to purchase a calendar notify it ahead of time by calling 717-392-4633.

KPB Litter Summit Held In Lancaster

Stakeholders in the fight against litter convened on Nov. 1 and 2 for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s (KPB) 2022 Litter Summit hosted by the city of Lancaster. The summit was held in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

On Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, and Sundays, Dec. 4, 11 and 18, from 1 to 4 p.m., local model train enthusiast Al Strausner

United Methodist Church, 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. Strausner and Palmeri will also collect monetary donations and nonperishable food donations for local food banks.

The displays will be 6 by 20 feet in size and include extensions that are 8 by 10 feet. Each set contains multiple intricate models of structures and train cars, made to scale

as replicas of their real-life counter parts.

Palmeri, now age 14, took an interest in his grandfather’s model collection around six years ago, and Strausner himself began collecting models when he was around 6 years old. “My aunt and uncle used to get me a new Plasticville model building for every holiday and birthday,” Strausner said. “They got me quite a few authentic ones from the ’50s,

which I still have.”

Strausner remained an avid collector through his teen years but stopped collecting once he went off to college and got married. He and his wife had a son, William, who took an interest in the models at an early age, prompting Strausner to dive back into old hobby around 25 years ago. His current collection numbers over 300 units.

Originally from Danville, Strausner moved to Lancaster in 1962 to attend Millersville University, where he studied industrial arts. He has lived in Lancaster ever since and loves being in close proximity to the many local railroads, his favorite among them being the Reading Railroad, which runs directly past his house. Strausner is an active member of the Train Collectors Association, which meets every month at the Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks.

Strausner and Palmeri will collect nonperishable food donations as well as monetary donations, which they will give to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ and Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church’s respective food banks. “I’ve been involved with (Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’) food bank and decided to use the displays to help out,” said Strausner. “We saw during the (COVID-19) pandemic that people were in need.” Last year, Strausner and Palmeri received donations from over 300 people and several monetary contributions.

To donate food or money, pay the two train aficionados a visit during the hours the display is open.

The event began with a walking tour of Lancaster’s sustainable community, including two projects funded by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the Tiny Cans Project and Lancaster Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project. The Tiny Cans Project provides free trash cans for neighborhood residents to install on their porch railings to reduce littering. The Lancaster Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project allows the city to add new compost bin locations throughout the city.

Other stops on the tour included the Storm Water Rain Garden and Art Mural at Musser Park, the Urban Forestry project, and the new Bike It Lancaster Bike Share. The tour was followed by an evening reception featuring an “Upcycled Art” exhibit curated by Red Raven Art Company. Keynote speaker Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster, spoke about how clean and beautiful communities support strategic priorities for the city: strong neighborhoods, safe places, sustainable economy, and sound government.

Keep America Beautiful (KAB) recognized the PA DEP and PennDOT for their support and collaboration with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s programming, including Pick Up Pennsylvania and the new Young Ambassadors Program. KAB also recognized Gov. Wolf’s office with a State Innovative Partnership Award for the state’s first Litter Action Plan. The summit also featured the state’s new anti-littering campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, which was developed as part of Gov. Wolf’s Litter Action Plan and outlines strategies for all Pennsylvanians to help in the fight against litter.

Find Unique Gifts At St. Phillip’s Craft Fair

St. Phillip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, will host dozens of vendors for its yearly holiday craft fair on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will offer food available to be purchased in addition to different handmade crafts. Parking will be offered in the church’s upper and lower parking lots, the latter of which is handicapped-accessible.

Fifty-eight unique vendors will sell their crafts at the fair, including pottery, woodworking items, jewelry, candy, gift baskets, stainedglass décor, Christmas ornaments and holiday cards. The vendors will be spread across both the church’s upper and lower levels.

Dona Antonelli, one of the vendors, has been participating in the event for over six years. Antonelli fashions jewelry out of recycled materials and items that would otherwise end up in a landfill, such as aluminum cans, credit cards and Styrofoam. “I wanted to do something different,” Antonelli said. “My daughter is a strong proponent for recycling and environmental awareness; we came up with the idea together.” Antonelli has a degree in studio art from West Chester University

and has worked as a graphic designer since graduating. For more information Antonelli’s work, visit www.desert dreamsdesignstudio.com.

The Lancaster Public Library will also sell books at the fair, and the church’s Knights of Columbus will sell breakfast and lunch from the parish kitchen. “It’s a nice way to spread Christmas cheer,” said Jackie Roberts of the women’s club. “(The fair) gets you in the holiday spirit, and it’s a great time to buy unique Christmas gifts.”

The craft fair is organized by the St. Phillip’s Women’s Auxiliary group, which has

been coordinating the annual event for 27 years. “We started (the craft fair) to fundraise for our group and allow us to make donations to the church and different local charities,” said Anne Marie Dunn, a member of the women’s group. The group itself will operate two stands; one will sell handcrafted items made by group members, and the other will sell baked goods such as cookies and brownies.

Over the years, the women’s group at St. Phillip’s has assisted with several projects within the church, such as purchasing a new refrigerator for the kitchen and funding

remodeling in the building. The group also supports the community in different ways by buying flowers and gifts for residents of local nursing homes around the holidays and making meals for the homeless twice a year at St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster city. After cooking the meals, members will bring them to St. Mary’s and distribute them alongside multiple other churches in the county.

“Our goal is to provide fellowship to women of the parish and financially support the church through its projects and community outreach,” said Roberts.

Grandparents Support Group To Meet

The Alienated Grandparents Anonymous (AGA) support group will meet on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Park City Community Room, located on the first floor near the entrance to the Park City Center

offices in the Kohl’s wing, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster.

AGA provides information and support to grandparents who have been cut off from access to their grandchildren. For more information, email aga.lancaster@gmail.com.
