On Saturday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 7 p.m., Christmas in Quarryville will be held at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville. The event will bring an array of festive activities to Quarryville, including Christmas light displays, live music and fireworks. During the event, food trucks will be on-site, and activities will also be held at the adjacent Memorial Park, where parking will be available.

Several holiday games and activities will take place throughout the day. The Southern End Community Association will host a gingerbread competition and See Christmas Event pg 14

Agift

drive for families and children living in the Southern End will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 17, at Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. The event will replace the previously held Solanco toy drive and has been extended to include all children 18 years old or younger.

The Solanco School District will accept donations until Sunday, Dec. 11, at all Solanco schools, as well as the administration building. The drive is being coordinated by Avery Hill, Shanna Hecker and Amanda

Hill operates a concurrent Angel Tree project for students in Solanco and has made adjustments to the program to ensure that all students in need are taken care of during the holiday season. The Angel Tree program collects wish lists from over 100 students each year and acquires five items from each list to gift to students.

This year, the Angel Tree program will be limited to those experiencing homelessness; all other students will be covered under the new gift drive. “We’re expanding on what the toy drive has done for years,” said Hill. “Now that we’re

doing the drive in addition to the Angel Tree project, we needed to scale (Angel Tree) back. The gift drive historically covers the younger age groups.”

The Angel Tree project began around a decade ago, as an initiative to acknowledge students that are experiencing homelessness in Solanco and ensure they experience a nice holiday. The program has grown over the years and received a great deal of support from the community; it is now able to include children over the age of 12, as well as add basic necessities such as winter coats to the list of items given out.

“There has never been a year

where we’ve had a request that has gone unfulfilled,” said Hill. “I get requests up to the day before Christmas break for donations. Our community is so supportive of the students that we can always accommodate those in need.” If the change in the drive goes well, Hill said she hopes to continue the new system next year. Due to the larger scope of students covered, the drive needed to change locations to Memorial United Methodist Church to provide the needed space.

Mules Top Shippensburg - Advance to District Semis

In a game that appeared to be heading for a mercy rule induced running clock, the momentum suddenly shifted. After grabbing a convincing 28-7 lead by halftime, Josiah Forren opened the third quarter with an 18-yard touchdown run before Shippensburg, not ready to concede defeat in the District Three 5A quarterfinals in Quar-

ryville on November 12, mounted a comeback. That rally fell short and Solanco advanced to the district semifinals, for the second time in school history, with a 42-35 thriller.

Shippensburg’s Trae Kater scored twice in a span of 57 seconds, sparked by an onside-kick recovery, that cut the lead to 35-21 with 2:53 left in the third.

“I think the kids just got

too relaxed,” said head coach Tony Cox. “And when they realized that, they refocused.”

Cole Harris, who rushed 83yards on 22 carries, capped a nine-play drive and scored what proved to be the gamewinning touchdown, a threeyard run that opened the fourth quarter and pushed the lead to 42-21.

The Greyhounds quickly responded. Quarterback Tucker Chamberlin (ranked top 10

in the state) threw a 48-yard strike to his brother, Tory. Nick Defrancesco blocked the PAT, giving Solanco new life but the Mules could not convert. They drove the length of the field but turned the ball over on downs with 5:23 left.

“We thought about kicking a field goal at that point, but our snaps were a bit off,” said Cox. “And we haven’t kicked a field goal all year. I didn’t want the pressure of this one to be our first. So we went for it and fell short of the first down.”

Chamberlin (15-for-24, 225 yards) passed his way to the endzone, eventually finding Kater with a 5-yard score. Then, spinning his way out of a jam, he cut the lead to 42-35 with an impressive flip to Erby Weller for the two-point conversion with 3:25 remaining. He was 10-for-12 in the second half. Solanco was able to gain first downs to run the clock out on Shippensburg’s season, dealing the eighth seed a heartbreaking 42-35 defeat.

“We just couldn’t stop them in the first half,” said Shippensburg’s head coach Eric Fouse. “I think we panicked a little.”

“This was an eye opener,” Cox stated. “We have a lot of things to correct. We can’t just do our own thing. We have to execute more, and we can’t relax when we get a lead.”

That first half included a 63-yard, 16 play drive and a

six-yard carry by Brody Mellinger for the first score of the game. Mellinger added two more touchdown runs in the second quarter, pushing the lead to 21-0 with 5:19 left in the half. Forren capitalized on David Achuff’s fumble recovery, forced by Defrancesco, scoring from six yards out to make it 28-0.

Shippensburg got on the board with 29.8 seconds left in the half and carried that momentum through the second half.

Forren finished with 175 yards on 14 carries and led

the defense with nine tackles. Mellinger added 131 yards on 16 carries and Harris added 88 yards on 22 rushes.

“Josiah is a hard-nosed kid,” said Cox. “He’s the spark when we need it. The seniors kept us going,” he added. “We never gave up and kept fighting. I knew if we got the ball back, we’d be able to kill some time. It was a good win.”

The final score reflected Solanco’s last playoff game when they lost at Shippensburg in 2019. That time around the Mules had the ball late but failed to capitalize.

Celebrating The Season With Gifts That Give Hope

In 2021, Gifts That Give Hope founder Jenn Knepper made a few changes in the annual celebration. First, the event returned to its original venue, and second, it moved to a Sunday so that attendees could enjoy a little shopping following church. The formula was successful, and this year,

the gift fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas

will be present for pictures, visits, and interactive story reading, and a number of children’s authors will be on-site.

Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter. The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episco-

pal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness.

“There have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.

Gifts That Give Hope

Josiah Groff started Big Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. “We work with local leaders in communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster.

“We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.”

According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities. Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.

When dancer Libby Shan-

non Miller of Lititz was killed at the age of 10 in a car accident in February, her parents, Brooke Carlock and David Miller, knew they wanted to do something to promote dance in their daughter’s memory. “(Libby) was a competitive dancer,” said Brooke. “Dance was her life and passion.”

David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance studio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students.

Live Like Libby scholarships are available for eligi-

ble students as nominated by local dance studios. People who donate during the fair will support these scholarships.

Brooke said that the name was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was per-

fect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.

Souvenir Photo Book Available

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg will accept advance orders for its new souvenir photo book, which is due out in late December. This colorful souvenir photo book captures the excitement of the museum’s historic trains and what is in store for visitors when they explore the museum. The 6by-6-inch hardback souvenir book contains 88 color and black-and-white images over 96 pages.

Titled “The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Pictures,” the book features photos and informative captions that show the range of vintage railroad equipment on exhibit in the museum, including the nearly 100 locomotives and railroad cars spanning the mid-19th through the late 20th centuries. Photos and captions were generated and assembled by a committee of museum volunteers and staff. The foreword was written by museum director Patrick C. Morrison, and the book is being published by Schiffer Publishing of Atglen.

For more information or to preorder a book, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org and look under Visit and click on Store or call 717-687-8628. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Schreiber Pediatric Begins Expansion Project

emonial

construction project on Oct. 13 and officially began construction on Nov. 14. The

project will include a 14,700square-foot addition and renovation of Schreiber’s current facility.

The multimillion-dollar project will allow Schreiber Pediatric to offer a greater range of services to a larger number of children in the area with special needs and reduce the likelihood that patients will be placed on a waiting list for critical treatment. “We have waitlists that can be up to two years long. If a child has to wait that long to walk or speak, they may not overcome their challenges if their needs aren’t met in a timely manner,” said James DeBord, president of Schreiber Pediatric. “This new space will be a game changer; it will mean that more children will be able to walk, speak and live out their dreams like any other child.”

The project is estimated to take 15 to 16 months to complete and will wrap up in early 2024. The addition will be completed in the project’s first phase, followed by the building renovations in the second phase. The key benefits to the larger space include allowing Schreiber Pediatric to treat 500 more children a year and the ability to hire over a dozen new therapists to meet the increasing demand. The addition will include a new department for physical therapy, and the current physical therapy department will be converted into a facility for traumatic brain injury treatment. Upgrades will also be made to the occupational therapy department.

DeBord said the largest obstacle in the last 10 years is keeping Schreiber Pediatric financially independent and stable. “Most organizations don’t touch behavioral therapy because it loses money,” said DeBord said. Most therapy services are reimbursed

through health care programs like Medicaid, meaning there is little profit in the field. Nevertheless, DeBord and Schreiber Pediatric have remained committed to making behavioral therapy services available to the community. The organization began changing the way funds were raised and initiating more philanthropic efforts, as well as bringing in more therapy staff to reduce waitlists. After running out of room to host all of its patients and staff, Schreiber Pediatric began drawing up the plan for the expansion project.

Although Schreiber Pediatric has been able to raise a portion of the necessary funds, it still requires money to cover its regular yearly expenses on top of the project expenses. “No one else is doing what we do, and we’re committed to making sure we can do it. This project will allow us to,” said DeBord. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

Christmas Event frompg 1

the yearly festival of trees, where multiple nonprofit organizations display their decorated Christmas trees for attendees of the event.

At 2:15 and 2:30 p.m., the Elf Dash will occur. Participants are encouraged to dress up as elves for the race, and prizes will be awarded for best male costume and best female costume. Holiday movies and hot chocolate will be available in the senior center building for anyone who wishes to step out of the cold during the day.

From 2 to 6 p.m., live entertainment will be provided by multiple different acts sponsored by the Quarryville Lions Club. There will be performances from Flipside Jazz Band, Debbie School of Dance and Bravura Brass, among others.

Tractor-drawn wagon rides will be offered from 4 to 7

p.m., and mule-drawn wagon rides will be available from 4 to 6 p.m. For animal lovers, an indoor petting zoo will be hosted by Solanco FFA, and from 3 to 4 p.m., attendees may bring their own pets for “Yappy Hour.” Pet owners are encouraged to dress their pets in holiday attire.

The day before the event, on Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m., a Christmas tree lighting will be held at the veterans’ honor tree at the park’s entrance. Christmas in Quarryville will also feature a special appearance by the Shopper Chopper, a 10-foot-tall, motorized, street-legal shopping cart.

This is the first year that the borough will host Christmas in Quarryville. Although several community events and activities have been hosted throughout in the past, such as the fall photo contest,

chalk contests and St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt, borough administration decided to have a larger event during the holiday season that is open to more than local residents, in addition to its regularly scheduled events. “The events we’ve had have been very successful and have

received a lot of support from the community,” said Scott Peiffer, borough manager. “All of those events were for borough residents only, but this event will be open to everyone. We don’t care where you live; come enjoy yourselves and engage in free activities and community.”

PA Preferred Website Created

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently launched a website for the PA Preferred brand, accessible at www.papreferred.com.

The website allows people to search for Pennsylvania products and connect with farmers.

Items with the blue and yellow PA Preferred checkmark are grown, harvested, or produced in Pennsylva-

nia, and buying these products means consumers are supporting Pennsylvania farmers and producers and keeping their dollars local.

The Department of Agriculture encourages Pennsylvania residents to look for these products while exploring the commonwealth’s farmers markets and farm destinations this fall and winter.

Volunteering is a widespread activity, with participants coming from all walks of life and various age groups. Parents and guardians may want to introduce their children to volunteerism, and even very young children can participate. Dr. Joseph F. Hagan Jr., a clinical professor of pediatrics at Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, said that helping others during the toddler and preschool years helps to shape a child’s sense of morality.

Adults should focus on finding the right activity to match a child’s age. For example, a 3- or 4-year-old can fill bags or boxes with donated food or help gather blankets

and towels to donate to an animal rescue. However, a toddler or preschooler may not have the stamina to complete a 5K walk.

Volunteerism does not even have to be carried out in the traditional sense of working with an established charity. A youngster can pick flowers and deliver them to an elderly neighbor. A preschooler can invite a child playing alone to come play together with him or her. A toddler who loves sorting items can help sort recycling items at home and watch a parent deliver them to the recycling center.

Another way to engage kids

in volunteer work is to match their interests with the tasks. Many kids cannot get enough of animals, so they may want to help an animal organization or be involved with a conservation group. A child can collect change to “adopt” an endangered species.

Kids also can visit a children’s hospital and deliver gifts to youngsters battling illnesses. In such situations, children may be more engaged if they can help others their own age.

Children can begin volunteering at a young age, and finding the right fit can inspire a lifetime of giving back.

Production To Showcase C.S. Lewis

Families and children of all ages can step into the world of Narnia this holiday season via an adaptation of the classic C.S. Lewis story “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

The show is a co-production between Reverie Actors Company and The Trust Performing Arts Center, with performances taking place at The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 26 and Dec. 10 and 17, as well as Thursday, Dec. 15. An 11 a.m. show has been set for Saturday, Dec. 3, as well.

The production follows the

Pevensie children in their journey into the wardrobe, where they meet characters from Narnia. All roles are performed by two actors in this 45-minute adaptation created by Broadway actress Le Clanché du Rand and toured by the Lincoln Center.

The show features four upper-level musical theater majors from Lancaster Bible College’s Music, Worship, & Performing Arts Department: Delaney Bigley, Mackenzie Islip, Bradley Myer, and Alexander Vogelgesang.

Tickets for the performances can be reserved at www.lancastertrust.com.
