NewProvidence Baptist Church, 2411 Beaver Valley Pike, New Providence, will host a service of remembrance on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. The service will offer a way for anyone who has lost a loved one or friend to honor his or her memory and discuss ways to cope with the grief that accompanies the holiday season without them.

The service will begin with a special musical composition, after which pastor Ron Rush will address attendees and speak about heaven and losing a loved one around the holidays. The event will also feature two guest speakers who will discuss the subject: Pam Zimmerman and Connie Kreider. Zimmerman and Kreider will sing a couple of arrangements, accompanied by harp, and the service will conclude

with a candle lighting and final prayer. After the service of remembrance, attendees will be invited to share light refreshments in the church’s fellowship hall.

Zimmerman lost her husband, Don Enterline, in August 1996 when he drowned at the age of 41 in the Susquehanna River during his annual fishing trip with his son. Kreider’s eldest daughter, Rebecca, died at the age of 27 after having a brain aneurysm in April 2010. Both Zimmerman and Kreider will share their stories and methods for navigating the holiday season and remembering their loved ones.

“The purpose of this service is to give those mourning the losses of loved ones an opportunity to experience a Christmas service where the absence of those loved ones is acknowledged,” said Trina Barr, organizer for the service of remembrance.

Barr began the service of remembrance five years ago and has held it at a different location each year. Barr first thought of beginning the program after the GriefShare program, which she also organizes, concluded for the year. The service of remembrance serves as a way for members of the community to continue to support each other through grief through the end of the year.

During the candle-lighting ceremony, each attendee will light five candles, each with its own meaning: one candle is lit for grief, one for love, one for hope, one for courage and one for memories. Rush will speak during the candle lighting and assist attendees. “It’s important that we celebrate the life that we have shared with each other and cherish the time we spend with loved ones,” said Barr.

Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, will host its third annual Journey to the Nativity re-enactment on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The holiday activity will be free to attend, but guests are encouraged to bring donations in the form of canned goods or gift cards, which the church will deliver to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank.

Upon arrival, a church member will greet attendees, and give a brief introduction to the activity and lead guests to a gathering area to wait for the journey to begin. Participants in the event will be assigned to different groups, which will take turns walking through the re-enactment. Groups will keep warm by a campfire and share cider, hot chocolate, cookies and Christmas stories as they wait for their turn. See Nativity pg 4

In October, Poiema Visual Arts introduced Sketch It! Sunday, a new program that partnered with multiple local churches to connect with members of the community via visual learning techniques. The organization invited churches across Pennsylvania to participate by providing the churches with drawing paper and writing utensils and encouraging them to invite members of their congregations to sketch and take notes during the service.

“We wanted to share a tool to reach visual learners,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “The activity has the potential to greatly impact creatives. For the analytical, they can take written notes, and those who don’t want to participate have nothing to worry about, as the services haven’t changed at all.”

Some churches elected to participate on one specific Sunday that aligned with their schedules in October, and others participated every Sunday of the month.

Poiema Visual Arts began by sending over 200 letters that invited churches to participate, and seven churches across four different counties stepped forward to use the technique. Miller noted that one participating church expressed a desire to integrate Sketch It! Sundays more frequently and asked about other creatively guided opportunities for its congregants. A member of Poiema’s board of

directors, who is a pastor at a church that utilized the program, said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of church members who participated and were excited to share their artwork after the service.

“I’m a pastor myself, and we like it when people look up at us during the service, but when that person leaves with that enthusiasm and realizes that this is an option for them to continue learning, what we’ve done is create a disciple of Christ,” said Miller. Miller has a background in the arts and Christian education, and for several years he struggled to combine his passion for art with his Christian faith.

Over two decades ago, Miller taught at Lancaster Bible College and first began to dream of creating a place for visual artists to engage with Scripture. He started laying the foundation for what he called “biblical creative theology,” as his life took him down many different paths. Miller

spent time teaching overseas, attended seminary in Virginia and briefly lived in Texas before returning to Lancaster County. As his sons grew older, Miller realized that he needed a new direction, as he would no longer need to homeschool them. “(God) gave me permission to take that box of metaphorical dreams off of the shelf and go through them,” said Miller.

Poiema Visual Arts was officially incorporated and opened its membership program in October 2021. The organization is currently based in Strasburg but is involved with churches across the county and beyond, including areas such as Hempfield, Manheim Township and York. First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, will host a concert of famous organ pieces on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. Held in the main sanctuary, the event will feature Peter Stoltzfus Berton, a recitalist from Rhode Island.

The purpose of the program is to dedicate the church’s new organ, a three-manual Allen instrument with the latest in computer sampling technology. The organ is actually five organs in one, emulating instruments from Philadelphia as well as several famous European organs. All of the available sounds of the organ will be utilized by Berton.

The program will include works by Bach, Elgar, Franck and Vierne, along with wellknown hymn tunes and patriotic numbers. The music was chosen to highlight the breadth of tonal color and flexibility of the instrument.

Berton is the organist and choirmaster at Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist, Newport, R.I., and the founding executive director of The Choir School of Newport County. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music and the Yale University School of Music. He is a published composer and has released

several CDs.

Light refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall following the concert. The event is free and open to the public.

A leader will take the groups to the first scene, depicting the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary and Joseph that they will bear a child. Mary and Joseph then embark on their journey with their donkey.

The next scene will depict the Holy Family arriving in Bethlehem and being denied a room at the inn, after which the group will walk to the field behind the church to witness the shepherds and their animals receiving the news from the angels of Christ’s birth. During the

final scene, the three kings will invite guests to join them and follow the star of Bethlehem to the Nativity scene. Each scene will include narration and conclude with a song.

“I wanted to create ambience,” said Diane Herr, who started the Journey to the Nativity at Mechanic Grove three years ago. “I want people to feel like they’re on that journey with the Holy Family to Bethlehem.”

Herr began the holiday reenactment after she noticed people weren’t able to go to church as much due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the churches that were still open had limited space. “It seemed like we were losing touch. I

thought, ‘There has to be something we can do,’” said Herr. She began researching what it would take to have a live, interactive Nativity event at the church with the help of her six committee members.

Herr’s idea was emphatically received by the community.

Actors volunteered to play the roles of shepherds, angels and the Holy Family, and the committee acquired the live animals needed to make the activity feel authentic.

“There’s no way I could have done it myself,” said Herr.

“It’s been an amazing experience.”

Presentation To Focus On Ancient Carvings

The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next program on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s archives building, located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The program is free and open to the public.

The program will be “Native American Carvings on the Lower Susquehanna River.”

Adam Zurn, founder of Uncharted Lancaster, will recount his expeditions down the lower Susquehanna River to explore the mysterious Native American petroglyphs hidden on the ancient river at Safe Harbor. He will discuss their significance and possible meanings as well as share some local legends surrounding the pictographs.

Zurn is a 21-year veteran technology education teacher in Lampeter-Strasburg School District, an amateur historian,

and a Lancaster County resident since 1997. Zurn enjoys exploring off the trail, searching for forgotten locations, and documenting those experiences online. He gives presentations on various local history topics and guided tours in the Conestoga Township area. He serves on the boards of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and the Conestoga Area Historical Society.

State Police To Offer Law Enforcement Training Program

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplines - marching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenariobased training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We

try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As

troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Football Association Honors Snider

The Solanco Midget Football Association recognized Jack Snider at the football game on Oct. 21. The Solanco Midget Football Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary, as the Midget Mules was launched in August 1972 under the direction of the Quarryville Jaycees. Snider was the acting president of the Quarryville Jaycees when the football organization was formed, and he served as the youth program’s first president. In his role as president and B team coach, Snider helped to raise the first dollars to support the program. Today, Snider and his family continue to support the program with the Founders Trophy, which is awarded annually to the Solanco Midget Football Association’s Outstanding Player at the conclusion of the season.

More than 6,000 football players; 3,000 cheerleaders; and countless volunteers have participated in the Midget Mules program since its inception.

UDS Seeks Volunteers, Sponsors For Fundraiser

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Volunteers wrap gifts to raise funds for UDS.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation - a nonprofit committed to helping seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives - has announced its 52nd annual gift-wrapping fundraiser. UDS’ gift-wrapping booth can be found at Park City Center in Lancaster from Black Friday, Nov. 25, through Saturday, Dec. 24.

The gift-wrapping booth is one of UDS’ largest yearly fundraisers. In order to staff this year’s booth through its entire 30-day run, UDS is seeking 500 volunteers. Those interested in volunteering should contact Radha Davé at 717-715-8921 or radhad@udservices.org. They

may also learn more and contact UDS at www.ud services.org/gwbvolunteer. Although volunteers who sign up early have more choice of the time slots, UDS will continue to accept volunteers throughout the holiday season until Dec. 24.

UDS also welcomes new and returning sponsors to help cover the costs of giftwrapping supplies; for more details, contact Larry Aubrey at 717-682-5575 or larrya@udservices.org. Both local businesses and individual donors are invited to sponsor the booth.

To learn more about UDS and the gift-wrapping fundraiser, visit www.ud services.org.

Pack 76, Troop 76 Offer Fun, Learning For Youths

When Madison Juarez joined Scouting, she was simply looking for something to do. However, once she got started, Madison found she enjoyed the activities, and she began encouraging others to join.

Madison started Cub Scouting in second grade as a Wolf Scout in Pack 76 in Quarryville. She was the first girl to join Pack 76 and last spring became the first girl to cross over into the newly formed Scout Troop 76G in Quarryville, which has since grown to include six Scouts. In Troop 76G, Madison has earned the rank of Scout.

During her years of Scouting, Madison has gained skills in camping, including building a campfire and pitching a tent, and she has developed the confidence to try new things, like shooting with a BB gun and bow and arrow. During hikes on the Conestoga Trail, at Muddy Run Park and at other local trails, she learned about edible and poisonous plants as well as trees and other plants that are native to the region.

Madison learned about aerodynamics, practiced safety through participation in bike rodeos, earned many badges and adventure belt loops, and developed her leadership skills. Throughout her years in Scouting, Madison has taken part in a variety of community service projects, including assisting a food bank, trout conservation efforts, and Wreaths Across America.

With Troop 76, she traveled to Camp Bashore for a week of exploration and earning merit badges as a Blue Mountaineer. Activities included chopping wood with an ax, learning about wildlife and environmental conservation, practicing first aid, learning about science, swimming, weaving baskets, learning about fingerprints, and joining in a patrol chant and camp songs. Together with her unit, Madison helped to design and fly the Troop 76G flag.

Cub Scout Pack 76 is open to children in kindergarten to fifth grade. The group meets on Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at the

SECA cabins in Quarryville, and more information is available by contacting Jen Feltch at 717725-4131.

Troop 76B for boys and Troop 76G for girls are open to youths from sixth grade to age 18. Both groups meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the SECA cabins in Quarryville. To learn more, contact Kandi Sharp, Scoutmaster of Troop 76G, at 717-201-4677, or Howard Urbine, assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 76B, at 610-842-8862. Children may join Scouting at any time during the year. Troop 76G and Troop 76B are chartered through the Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, a nonprofit organization in New Providence. The charter organization representative for Troop 76 is Don Wilson.
