Thespians To Stage Comedic Play By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We want to get the word out: It’s a funny play,” said John Biles, director of Solanco High School’s production of “The Imaginary Invalid” by Molière. “It’s a farce. It’s all comedy. It’s not a tragedy whatsoever.” Although written in French in 1673, the play has been translated into English and adapted by Milles Malleson, and it now takes place in America in the 1920s. Wealthy Argan (Patrick Hodgson) imagines himself an invalid. He is fixated on his physical condition and hopes that by arranging for his eldest daughter, Angelica (Beth West), to marry a doctor, he will receive free medical care. Meanwhile,
Angelica falls in love with the artist Cleante (Gabe LaMonaca), and Argan’s second wife, Beline (Abby Golden), cannot wait for Argan to die so she can seize his fortune. “I’ve never played an antagonist like this before, but she’s so fun to play,” Abby said of Beline. “I try to be kind all day, but it’s fun to come to practice and play the villain.” Biles noted that in the time period in which the play has been reset, the influenza epidemic has just subsided and at that time, folks were more likely to be killed than helped by a doctor. Argan’s maid, Toinette (Emily Herr), toys with her employer and enacts trickery by pretending to be a male doctor. See “The Imaginary Invalid” pg 9
Solanco High School thespians will perform Molière’s “The Imaginary Invalid” on Nov. 14, 15, 16, and 17.
