very winter, the Southern End community rallies together for Solanco Coats For All, a collection drive that aims to keep every neighbor warm during the most frigid time of the year. But the annual event doesn’t just help local residents ward off the cold - it serves as an opportunity to strengthen the area’s sense of community. “Our goal is to get coats to people who need them, but we also welcome them in,” said event organizer Hannah Erdvig. “It’s about seeing more of a person than just a need for a coat.” Donations collected through the drive will be distributed on Friday, Nov. 20, at Oak Hill Fellowship Church, 1 W. Fourth St., Quarryville. From 3 to 7 p.m., individuals and

families in need of winter wear may browse items as if they were shopping at a clothing store. Each shopper may choose up to two coats per household member, and Oak Hill Fellowship Church keeps track of requested items and sizes to best meet the community’s needs. Visitors may enjoy light refreshments as they peruse the collection of coats, including cookies, hot chocolate and fruit. A kids’ area will be available for children to play in as their parents shop, and members of the church will be present to help guests pick out clothes or share a conversation. “We have people arrive hours before it opens, and a lot of them have said that they love being able to talk with us as they look for coats,” Erdvig said. “We want everyone to feel welcome, and we get to build relationships with people every year.”

behind the annual banquet has remained unchanged, the community tradition has continued to grow larger ever y year. T he average number of attendees has climbed from less than 20 to more than 150 individuals in recent years. Certain small changes have been made; this year, the banquet will begin 30 minutes earlier than normal to accommodate guests who dislike driving at night. The event will also highlight more live music this year in place of its typical guest speaker. The Quarryville Lions Club will award a gift card donated by C.R . Lapp’s Family Restaurant in Quarryville to the oldest veteran who attends the banquet. Guests are encouraged to br ing donations of unwrapped toys, which Lions Club members will collect for the Toys for Tots program operated by the United States Marine Corps. “ The banquet accomplishes what we set out to do, which was to show veterans our gratitude instead of just saying thank you all the time,” said Wagner. “People that come are really appreciative, and the ceremony is always a nice way to start the night.”

Coat Drive from pg 1 L a s t y e a r, S o l a n c o Coats For All gave away more than 340 coats and received 60 visitors at the distribution shop. After the shop closes, any remaining items will be donated to local elementary schools and other clothing drives in the area to make sure every donation is put to good use. “We’ve put more effort into more advertising for the shopping event itself in recent years,” Erdvig said. “ We get tons of donations in, but we want to make sure they can all find a home afterwards.” Donations of winter coats, hats, gloves, snowsuits and new socks may be dropped off at several participating locations until
Friday, Nov. 13. Drop-off locations include local businesses and nonprofit organizations such as Dewald Funeral & Cremation Services, Neff Physical Therapy, Dolce Vita Pizzeria & Grill, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries and Solid Rock Youth Ministries. “The coat is just an external need we can fill. That relationship with them is important, but we want to fill those physical needs first,” said Erdvig. “Once they’re here, we can learn more about their stories, who they are and how we can further support them in a community-minded way.” For more information, search for “Solanco Coats For All” on Facebook or Instagram.

Because of that experience and inner strength, officials at L ancaster Bible College (LBC) have entrusted Chambers to lead the college into the future. “Education is the second most important thing that God has allowed me to experience,” said Chambers. “None of my family members went to college. For me, going to college was the first time I could sit and not be judged. I didn’t feel like I had to survive. I owe so much to education. It’s hard for me to think where I’d be if I didn’t go to college.” Recently, Chambers was selected to become the new president of LBC, which is located at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Chambers will officially assume his important responsibilities as the nondenominational college’s sixth president on July 1, 2027, when current president Tommy Kiedis transitions out of the position. Program to Focus on Orchids The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will hold a program on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The speaker will be author and orchid expert Arthur E. Chadwick. Art and his father, A. A. Chadwick - who began growing orchids in 1943 founded Chadwick & Son Orchids Inc. in 1989. The duo’s first book, “The Classic Cattleyas,” was released 20 years ago, with an updated second edition printed in 2022. A second book, “First Ladies and their Orchids: A Century of Namesake Cattleyas,” was released in 2024. In addition, for 20 years, Art wrote a monthly orchid advice column that was carried by newspapers around the country. Art and his father operate 13 greenhouses in rural Powhatan County, Va., as well as two retail stores in Richmond, and they board more than 13,000 orchids for local clients. The company has been featured on television shows and in magazines and newspapers. In addition, the
Chadwicks have named Cattleya hybrids after the wives of the six recent U.S. presidents and personally presented the flowers to most of the honorees. Art regularly presents to orchid societies and has spoken at three World Orchid Conferences. Recently, Chadwick & Son Orchids had two highprofile orchid exhibits: one at the 2025 Chelsea Flower Show in London, where the company won a silver medal from the Royal Horticultural Society and a visit from Queen Camilla, and one at the 2026 Philadelphia Flower Show, where the company received best artistic design, best educational exhibit, no. 1 mustsee exhibit, and a visit from Martha Stewart. Signed copies of both the Chadwicks’ books will be available for purchase at the event. Blooming orchids will also be available for purchase using cash, a check, or a credit card. Light refreshments will be available. Guests may attend for a fee. For more information, contact K athy at amishville2@yahoo.com.
