Supping On Spaghetti To Support Post Prom

Readers are invited to take a break from worrying about what is for dinner on Saturday, Nov. 9, and instead attend a spaghetti meal fundraiser at the Hoffman Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville.

Between 5 and 7 p.m., individuals will be treated to spaghetti and sauce, salad, bread, applesauce, and cookies served cafeteria-style.

Diners may opt to find a seat and participate in the Southern End Community Association auction that will run concurrently, or they may take their meals to go. Separate prices for the meal have been set for adults and for children ages 2 to 10 and will be payable at the event.

The proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will benefit the Solanco High School post prom event, which will be held on

Saturday, May 16, 2020. The post prom committee, which is composed of the parents and guardians of Solanco seniors, plans to elaborately decorate set areas of the high school to transform it according to a theme that will remain top secret until the event. The committee is also planning games and activities and soliciting donations of prizes to be given away to post prom attendees. A budget of $20,000 has been set for the event.

“We’re planning more activities at post prom (than in other years),” said co-chair Sherri Bleacher. “The busier we keep (attendees), the more interested they are in staying.”

The goal of post prom is to provide a safe place for students right after prom, Bleacher explained. Traditionally, private afterparties often feature alcohol and other potentially dangerous substances. By providing an exciting See Spaghetti Dinner pg 10

Special Event Will Honor Those Who Served

Sacred Heart Craft Fair Set

Veterans Day, a federal holiday, is celebrated annually to honor people who have served the United States in the military in war and in times of peace. In accordance with the holiday, Martic MOST (Military Outreach Support Team) will host its seventh annual Tribute to Veterans on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Marticville Middle School, 356 Frogtown Road, Pequea. Refreshments will be served when doors open at 8:30 a.m. The program will begin in the school’s auditorium at 9:30 a.m.

The 18th annual Sacred Heart Fall Craft Fair is set for Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Oxford.

There are 75 vendors scheduled to attend the large event, which is organized by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus of Sacred Heart Church. “We have mostly all handcrafted things,” committee member Patti Cripps said.

Tickets will be available at the door only for the first half-hour of the event.

Trains and Troops activities are included in the regular museum admission. Proceeds from Trains and Troops and the 1940s Swing Dance will benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

The 20th annual Trains and Troops weekend event will be held at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Nov. 3. Its purpose is to honor American railroads and the United States military, including servicemen and servicewomen.

The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will present the colors at 11 a.m. on Nov. 2 and at 1 p.m. on Nov. 3. The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will perform a repertoire of Americana and patriotic music on Nov. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the Lancaster Trombone Quartet performing on Nov. 3 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

During Trains and Troops, an array of military and military railroad service-related vehicles, uniforms, equipment, field gear, maps, books, photographs, memorabilia, and collectibles will be on display from participating exhibitors, as well as items from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s archives. Visitors also will encounter military, civilian, and railroader living history re-enactors from various eras in the nation’s history throughout the museum.

Magician Brett Myers recently announced that the Magic & Wonder Show formerly located at the Bird-in-Hand Stage will move to a new location for its fifth season in Lancaster County. The theater previously known as Rainbow Comedy Playhouse is being transformed into the Magic & Wonder Theater and will offer multiple shows a week from April through December.

The magician explained that the new venue at 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, will allow for larger, more astonishing illusions. Additionally, his wife, Labrina, will be able to soar high in the air with her aerial act.

Mares Stun LD, Top Fleetwood in Penalty Kicks

Solanco’s Cinderella season lives for another game. Despite wrapping up the regular season with seven wins and two ties, the girls’ soccer team did not qualify for the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs. Their 12-4-2 overall record, did however, put them in the District Three Class 3A championships as the 16th seed.

Last Monday at top seed Lower Dauphin (17-2) the Mares, after 17 seasons, made their first-ever

appearance in the district tournament a memorable one. The underdogs stunned the Falcons 1-0 on a Sammi Jackson goal in the 65th minute. Kaylin Fowler got the assist.

Hannah Wood set up what proved to be the game winning goal with a free kick across the box.

Kendal Janssen headed the ball back across the goal mouth where Fowler deflected it to Jackson who came running through with a shot to the back of the net.

“Our defense was just amazing,”

praised head coach Ken Yoder. “Gabi Dolan (12 saves) easily played one of the best games I have seen her play in her great career here at Solanco.

And our back line, three sophomores and a freshman mind you, were amazing in shutting down one of the most dangerous teams in the district. Hannah Wood, Maya Dolan, Rilyn Saner and Ariana Sieberlich were phenomenal all night long.”

The Falcons held a 12-7 edge in shots on goal and led 5-1 in corners but the game played fairly even

throughout.

“In the second half we got called for a foul in the penalty box and their kick hit the post,” Yoder noted. “That missed chance was their biggest and was a huge momentum swing for us.”

If knocking off the top seed in the tournament wasn’t exciting enough, how about winning the quarterfinal round in penalty kicks! Thursday night the team traveled to No. 9 Fleetwood, a 1-0 winner over Northern York, where they prevailed with a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks.

After 80 minutes of scoreless regulation play and two 15 minute overtimes, the game was decided on penalty kicks.

“It’s kind of ironic,” said Yoder.

“We kept practice light yesterday so literally the only thing we worked on was penalty kicks. This was our firstever penalty kick situation,” he added. “You hate to see it come down to that but I’m happy we prevailed.”

Dolan, who was phenomenal in goal with 19 saves, scored Solanco’s first kick of the night and then stepped back into goal to defend

Fleetwood’s attempts. Fleetwood tied the score on their first kick.

Yoder stepped up to make it 2-1 before the hosts again tied it up at 2-2. Kayden Bedwell put the visitors in front with another successful kick. This time Fleetwood missed.

Round four saw both squads miss attempts while Grace Unger sealed the win, making good on Solanco’s final shot of the night.

“It was an unbelievable game,” said Yoder. “I felt they were on the attack a good portion of the game.

Lancaster Bike Challenge Set Lighten Up Lancaster County, in partnership with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, is holding its free annual wellness event, the Lancaster Bike Challenge. The Bike Challenge began on Oct. 14 and will end on Friday, Dec. 6.

Individuals who sign up to participate in the challenge will receive weekly facts and bicycle education to remain safe on the roads, suggested activities to get rolling through Lancaster County, and weekly surveys for feedback. The loss drops the Mules to 2-3 in section play and 5-4 overall. They are currently ranked 13th in 5A. “They did some things we weren’t prepared for,” said head coach Tony Cox. “They’re a ranked team and they’re very good. Their quarterback caused us problems all night. And we didn’t execute the way we wanted to.”

Cocalico’s Noah Palm completed 4-of-5 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 72 yards and two scores to lead the visitors. Palm hit Ronald Zahm with a 45-yard toss for the first TD of the night and Steven Flinton ran 2yards to make it 13-0. Flinton opened the second frame with a 12yard TD run then Palm took over. He raced 32-yards to paydirt, found Zahm with an 8-yard toss and then scored on a 29-yard run as time expired, pushing the lead to 40-0.

Two of those scores saw the Eagles take advantage of an interception and a fumble recovery.

Defensively the Eagles were just as impressive, holding the top rushing team in the league to just 96 yards in the first half. Nick Yannutz, who finished with 117 yards on 13 carries, was held to 36 yards on nine carries in the first half.

VisionCorps clients experiencing low vision and blindness were introduced to new, accessible features of Lancaster County voting machines ahead of the upcoming election. During a recent support group meeting for individuals experiencing vision loss, Randall Wenger of the Lancaster County Board of Elections and Registration demonstrated new key features that are designed to improve the voting experience for individuals living with low vision or blindness. Lancaster is known as the first Pennsylvania county to use the most recent voting system, though it has been available in other areas of the country.

Community volunteers from the Home Depot in Parkesburg worked to spruce up the Woerth It Hollow Farm in Kirkwood.

They painted, fixed the barn gutters, and repaired rotted wood sections of the barn.

Community volunteers from West Sadsbury Home Depot store in Parkesburg carried out a service project at Woerth It Hollow Farm on July 27 to spruce up the nonprofit equine rescue farm in Kirkwood.

Army veteran and Woerth It Hollow executive director Sara Hodgkiss runs the nonprofit farm where horses bound for slaughter find forever homes.

As part of the mission of Woerth It Hollow, Hodgkiss’

fellow military veterans who want to learn basic horsemanship and barn management skills spend time on the farm, honing their skills in the agrarian environment.

Maintaining the farm, which had been in Hodgkiss’ family for generations prior to the establishment of Woerth It Hollow programming, is a fulltime job, but because the nonprofit relies on community support and volunteer labor,

several long-standing needs have gone unmet. Home Depot volunteers stepped in to paint, fix the barn gutters, and repair rotted wood sections of the barn.

The PA Veteran Farming Project connects veterans, members of the military

Conference To Explore Native American, European Life A weekend conference staged at two western Lancaster County historical societies will explore the relationships among American Indians and the first Europeans to settle, farm, and trade in central Pennsylvania in the 18th century. A variety of programs will be open to the public without charge.

The conference will begin on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. with the Millersville Area Historical Society’s meeting at the Millersville municipal center, 100 Municipal Drive. Nicole Eustace, professor of history at New York University, will present a program titled “Murder and Mercy on the Susquehanna: Captain Civility of Conestoga Teaches Pennsylvania Colonists New Principles of Justice.”

At 10:30 a.m., conference participants may enjoy a self-guided historical driving tour to refresh their memories of the William Penn land area and the Native American use of that land. The tour was created by local historians Darvin Martin and Christine Brubaker. The tour will stop at notable sites along the Conestoga River and Indian Creek and conclude at the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, where lunch will be served.

The tour will also include a stop at land owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners, which has public access and is a Lancaster County Historic Preservation Trust site. Brubaker, who organized the conference, is spearheading a movement to have the abandoned house and its surrounding land designated as a cultural and historic heritage park, with a proposed name of PennLogan Outdoor Education Center.

The park would be dedicated to the indigenous people and provincial settlers of Pennsylvania and highlight the Native Americans’ Great Conestoga Road, Pennsylvania founder William Penn, and Penn’s secretary, James Logan, who owned land in Conestoga and Manor townships.

At 1 p.m., Barry Lee, a board member and song leader for Circle Legacy Center, a local Native American advocacy group, will share his wampum belts and heritage stories.

The conference will continue on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., when the CAHS hosts Will Fenton, director of scholarly innovation at The Library Company of Philadelphia. Fenton will introduce a new graphic novel, “Ghost River: The Fall and Rise of the Conestoga,” which was produced with assistance from Circle

Legacy Center, Pew Charitable Trust scholars, and public school teachers. Lancaster newspaper columnist and author Jack Brubaker will discuss the aftermath of the massacre of Conestoga Native Americans in 1763.

The conference has been designed to promote awareness of early Native American and European relations and, especially, of the major role Logan played in connecting the two groups.

Logan, whose primary home was in Philadelphia, owned about 500 acres along the Little Conestoga Creek and the Conestoga River.

He also established a trading post that served the Conestoga Native Americans who lived in Manor Township. The Conestoga wagon originated in the area and

carried trade goods throughout the commonwealth and beyond.

“We hope this program will launch a new awareness of (Native American)/settler relationships,’’ said Brubaker. “We also hope it will help build momentum for a recreational and educational public cultural heritage park to be created on Logan’s historic land. We want to emphasize the unique nature of the relationships he helped forge in William Penn’s Pennsylvania.’’

Pursenalities Party from pg 1 The American Heart Association, an organization focused on heart and brain health, invites women from across Lancaster County to the ninth annual Pursenalities Party. The silent purse auction to raise funds and awareness for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Residents of southern Lancaster County who receive emergency services provided by Wakefield Ambulance Association (WAA) should expect to receive new subscription information soon, as the association is conducting its annual membership drive for 2020. Subscription letters are slated to be mailed in early November, and they must be returned by Saturday, Feb. 1, for yearlong benefits. WAA is the primary Basic Life Support (BLS) and Intermediate Advanced Life Support (IALS) emergency medical service for Fulton, Little Britain, and Drumore townships, as well as part of East Drumore Township. Each year the company receives nearly 700 dispatches in the local area.

For 2020, separate membership dues have been set for single memberships, for couples, and for families of three or more.

The company will continue the additional benefits of free CPR and bleeding control classes for all members, provided by Wakefield’s instructional staff.

The main benefit to being a subscriber is having zero out-ofpocket expenses for any BLS, IALS, and Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance service during 2020 from Wakefield as well as Lancaster EMS. “There’s a job that fits everybody,” Bleacher said. “No help is too big or too small. We’ll take them all.”

According to www.liberty warbirds.com, the UH-1 aircraft flew for the 170th AHC and Company C 101st Avn Bn 101st Airborne in Vietnam during 1968 and 1969. It was brought to Lancaster in the mid-2010s and was restored in order to educate the public about the impact of the machines, honor Vietnam veterans, and serve as a catalyst for veterans to tell their stories, some for the first time.

by Tim Wright, a veteran who served in Vietnam, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. He will once again exhibit his Wall of Fallen Heroes of the MidAtlantic States. Wright began the project in 2003 to ensure that those who lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts are recognized and remembered.

The program will also include Solanco High School alumnus Col. Philip Atkinson; a “Fireside Chat” with

Afghanistan conflict veterans Staff Sgt. Jake Crowder, Sgt. Shawn Coe, and Spc. Luke Thorsen; the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard; the Solanco High School chorale; Central York Middle School Fifes and Drums; state Rep. Bryan Cutler; chaplain Maj. Kyle Brown; and others. Exhibitors at the event will include Quarryville VFW Post 3575, Wreaths Across America, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, and more.

All members of the public are invited to attend the Tribute to Veterans free of charge.

“There are lots of things for Christmas shopping; there are always Christmas crafts,” Cripps said.

Cripps estimates that 85% of the vendors return from year to year. “We have a winning plan that everybody likes,” she said.

There are always some new vendors, including one that Cripps is particularly excited to see. Mary Lou Burton will sell and sign copies of her children’s book about cats, titled “Fluffy’s Tales.”

In addition to the crafters, there will also be the popular Grannies’ Attic section, where shoppers may purchase gently used items that have been donated for the sale. The section features housewares, jewelry, Christmas decorations and more.

When visitors need a break from shopping, they may enjoy lunch, which will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day’s menu will feature pulled pork sandwiches, grilled cheese, hot dogs, chili and zesty tomato soup. Soup and chili will be sold by the quart.

Homemade wrapped baked goods will be available in the Sweet Shop. “We have a really lovely bake table,” Cripps said.

“We decorate everything seasonally and beautifully. Everything’s almost like a gift when you take it out of there. It’s just a beautiful display.”

Organizing the craft fair is a big project. “We really hit the ground running. We do a lot of preparation all year long,” Cripps said. “We have student volunteers. We could not do it without them; they are such a big help.

All our volunteers wear our blue Ladies Auxiliary shirts, and we’re circulating all day long. If anybody has any questions, they can always (ask) us that day if they’re looking for a particular vendor.”

Proceeds from the craft fair will be used to contribute to the general needs of the parish and the community.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, North Star Initiative will host a Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. North Star Initiative began operating The Harbor, Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, in 2017.

“The common remark I get from people is, ‘Trafficking is really happening here in Lancaster County?’ And it is,” shared Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative director of development. “It’s important to become aware of what’s going on and to know the facts so you can share them with other people.”

Esbenshade said that the Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. will help people to understand more about the issue and how they can support the ministry of North Star Initiative. Attendees will hear stories from survivors of trafficking and learn about the organization’s vision for the coming year. That vision is covered in the acronym R.I.S.E.: Renovating existing structures, Innovating through programming, Sustainability through transitional living, and remaining Established in Christ for all of the restorative services offered. The vision is also reflective of the declaration in Scripture from Micah 7:8: “Do not

Though I fall, I will rise; though I sit in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.”

The Harbor is designed to provide a safe haven for women ages 18 to 40 who are survivors of sex trafficking. It has capacity for up to 10 residents at a time. Esbenshade explained that The Harbor Restoration Program aims to provide psychological, physical, emotional, and spiritual care with a holistic, Christ-centered focus. Through the traumainformed, strengths-based residential program, the needs of each survivor are assessed and an individual care plan is implemented. The Harbor can provide access to trauma therapy and supports, life skills and other education classes, and assistance with preparing for safe, healthy, and independent living in the future.

Tapas Shindig ticket proceeds will go toward providing equineassisted therapy for residents of The Harbor. “All of our residents get individualized therapy, and (equine therapy) is something that has been extra beneficial for them,” explained Esbenshade.

Doors for the Tapas Shindig will open at 5:30 p.m. for an evening of sharing, tapas, a silent auction, and live music performed by country musician Ryan Mayersky. Tickets are limited and may be purchased by visiting https://northstarinitiative.org

Because “Emma” is a novel of more than 400 pages, Slaymaker realized from the outset that it would only be possible to present a small part of it at Rock Ford.

The production focuses on the first of the three volumes that make up the novel. According to Slaymaker, “Emma” takes place circa 1800, which was also Edward Hand’s era.

Previous collaborations between Rock Ford and Theater of the Seventh Sister include “Sleepy Hollow: The Legend Comes to Rock Ford,” which ran for six years, and “Tales From the Caretakers,” which was presented in October 2018.

To maintain an intimate atmo-

sphere and to allow the play to be performed within the house, tickets will be limited to 20 per performance. Reservations are required.

Guot immigrated to the United States, where he completed his GED, became a citizen, and answered God’s call to serve his people in Bor, South Sudan.

A chance meeting with Lancaster’s First United Methodist Church minister Kent Kroehler, who is now retired, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years. He graduated from Lancaster Bible College before moving to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. In addition to the SRM, Guot founded a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot has recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.”

Senior Center Hosts Entertainer

Sword swallower David Peyre-Ferry performed for a crowd at the Solanco Senior Center on Sept 26. Along with swallowing swords, he demonstrated plate spinning, standing in broken glass and laying on a bed of nails, along with some jokes.

Daniel-Morales Earns Recognition Lenfest is a $12,000 annual scholarship renewable for four years.

Daniel-Morales is interested in attending Swarthmore College and plans to study either foreign language or comparative literature.

Solanco High School senior Brandon Daniel-Morales has earned recognition for his academic achievements. The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) has honored DanielMorales as one of the top scholars in the United States, as he scored among the top 1% of students who took the PSAT last school year.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program recognizes approximately 5,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors each year from among the more than 400,000 juniors who take the PSAT. As with the National Merit Scholarship Program, NHRP uses the junior year PSAT/NMSQT as the qualifying test.
