“A
Christmas Carol” is a stor y most people are well acquainted with; Charles Dickens’ timeless tale has been reimagined many times and adapted for nearly every medium. At Solanco High School, the cast members of this year’s fall production are pushing their physical and creative limits to put on the familiar fable as you’ve never seen it before. Solanco High School Drama Troupe No. 1004 will present “A Christmas Student actors rehearse for this year’s production of “A Christmas Carol.” Carol” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19; Friday, Nov. 20; comedic elements as it tells the Maurer, as an influence, and he and Nov. 21, in the school’s audi- story of Ebenezer Scrooge. What does it look like when members of a community work together to meet the needs of every person in it? Maybe it looks like a largescale fundraising campaign to support public resources and programs, or it might be a group of volunteers who spend their weekends handing out canned goods at their

local food bank. Sometimes, supporting the community is as simple as a good pair of sneakers and a clean pair of socks. Every year, Dewald Funeral and Cremation Ser vices partners with Solanco School District to organize a sneakers, socks and underwear drive to benefit local elementary school students. For veterans, navigating all of the resources available in the community can be a complicated process. American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy wants to help. The Legion will host a Veterans Benefit Information Session at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. It will feature representatives from 12 agencies that support veterans and their care and recovery. Although the event will take place in Mount Joy, it’s open to all veterans and their caregivers throughout Lancaster County. “If you are a veteran or have a veteran family member, this event will bring many resources together for you to leverage at your fingertips,” said Stacey M i l l e r, s e r v i c e o f f i c e r fo r Post 185. “The needs of veterans vary, and these organizations can help you navigate to find the best care and programs available for the veteran and their caregiver.” With so many organizations offering different types of assistance, finding the right resource can be a challenge for veterans and their families. The information session will give attendees an opportunity to learn about services they may not know are available, ask questions about their individual circumstances and connect directly with people who can guide them through the process. Caregivers can also benefit from learning about programs designed to help them navigate the challenges of caring for a veteran. By bringing representatives from multiple agencies together, the Legion hopes to make it easier for veterans See Veterans pg 4

donations to all four elementar y s cho ols in Solanco School District. Each elementar y school will use the donated items to re s to c k i t s S w a p p e S h o p , a f re e c l o t h i n g resource available to students year-round. Guidance counselors regularly take inventory of specific items and sizes requested by students and include them in a newsletter to parents and local community members interested in making a donation. Last year, members of the community donated 259 pairs of sneakers, 667 pairs of socks and 286 pairs of underwear. “Our community is s u p e r g e n e r o u s . Yo u put the need out there, and the y al ways come through,” said Miller. “A lot of people just go to Go o d ’s S tore in Q uarr yville and buy bags of stuff to drop off. It’s a huge blessing.” Dewald held its first drive in 2020, after Little Britain Presbyterian Church cancelled its annual coat drive due to safety concerns amid the coronavir us pandemic. The church resumed its coat drive in 2021, but M il ler contac te d lo c al guidance counselors to ask if there were other specific needs in the community. Most elementary schools shared the consistent need for socks, underwear and sneakers because of how quickly students outgrow them or wear them out. “A new pair of sneakers may not seem like a big deal to most of us,” said Miller. “But for a child whose shoes are wor n out or too small, having a good pair of sneakers can make a difference.” Dewald also served as a drop-off location for Solanco Coats For All, a communitywide coat drive held throughout the month of October. A free shopping event for families will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, at Oak Hill Fellowship Church, 1 W. Fourth St., Quarryville. For more information about the sneaker, socks and under wear drive, contact Miller at kara@ dewalds.com.

Jedidiah is not the only cast member experimenting with vocal techniques at rehearsal. Senior Ben Ginter said he has prepared for his role as Scrooge’s phantom business partner, Jacob Marley, by learning how to lower the pitch of his voice and delivering his lines with a growl. “I like to give my actors a lot of leeway with their characters,” Maurer said. “ We have such a wellrounded cast, and everybody is bringing something different to the stage.” Maurer added that the cast of this year’s fall play is much larger than usual, and the production crew will augment the show’s gothic tone with dynamic lighting effects and organ accompaniment. Although some students have looked to other adaptations of “A Christmas Carol” for inspiration, cast members such as senior Grace West have added depth to their characters by feeding off of their fellow actors’ energy. “It’s nice to find parts of the character within myself as well,” added Grace, who will play

ASPIE Art Gallery Sets Open Houses
A SPIE , a nonprofit organization that creates supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities, will hold open houses at its gallery, 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 7 and 14. Ar twork s featured at the open houses will include paintings, photographic prints, metal sculptures, jewelry, original comic books, crafts, figurines, books, and stuffed creatures. Santa may be present for the festivities. ASPIE’s group of artists features 16 new members, including eight from Lancaster. New members also hail from other areas of Pennsylvania, as well as New York, Florida, California, and Pakistan. Featured local artists include David Allen, Trish Barsby, Lu Bohn, Jesse Buckwalter, Patricia Caulfield, Malcolm C o r l e y, D a v i d F o g e l l , Steven Georges, Dorrin G i n g e r i c h , J P H e n r y, Carly Long, Evie Mann, K ate Manners, Vaughn Miller, Danielle Newman, Katelyn Schaefer, Mar y Schultz, Jonathan Whitlock, and Ryan Zinnanti. The upcoming open houses will also feature work s by ar t ist s from par tner organizations, such as Schreiber Center for Pedi atr ic Development, InSight Arts, and United Disabilities Services. ASPIE helps its member artisans generate income throug h donations for their original artworks using the online A SPIE Gallery, located at www .aspieartists.com, and the in-person gallery in Lancaster. Open houses offer opportunities for community members to browse a collection that is different from the online gallery, take home artworks, and interact with the artists. Donors make it possible for the ar tists to show their work and grow more independent. For more information, call Jerry Buckwalter at 207-412-8090.
