Level Presbyterian
Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, resumed its tradition of hosting Wednesday night Faith and Food dinners on Sept. 21. Each Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., people are able to purchase a meal for a set price and pick it up at a drive-through window or dine inside the church. The meal includes an entrée that is provided by a local business, two sides and one dessert. Meals may be purchased ahead of time by calling the church office at 717-548-2763 and must be reserved prior to the Monday before the meal.
Previously, the church hosted dinners each Wednesday night inside the church, a routine that was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to cook or allow members of the community inside the building, the church administration decided to start having a takeout meal available instead, so that people could stay connected during a difficult time and families in need could still acquire an affordable meal once a week. This is the third year that Chestnut Level Presbyterian has offered Faith and Food meals, and the ministry has been gladly received by the public, with some nights drawing over 250 people.
The meals serve the community in a variety of ways: Busy families rely on the convenience of picking up a prepared dinner as they dart to and from children’s sports and dance practices, church members use it as an opportunity to socialize with each other and many regular attendees have dubbed it their “adult happy meal,” as a new meal is offered each week. Meals will be offered through the program until Dec. 14, and after a holiday break, the church will resume the meals in January of 2023.
In addition to the Faith and Food meals, Chestnut Level Presbyterian offers youth and adult Bible studies on Wednesday nights and worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. A Trunk or Treat will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center parking lot across from the sanctuary. On Sunday, Dec. 11, the church will host the Journey to Bethlehem from 5 to 7 p.m. During the event, shepherds will guide participants through a live Nativity scene set up in the Family Life Center parking lot, concluding with the manger and re-enacting the events around the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, will have a benefit sale on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fundraising event will be separated into three parts: an indoor yard sale, a book sale and a chicken barbecue. The indoor yard sale will have several items donated by the community, such as antiques and housewares, and a silent auction will be held for the more valuable items. This year, the library will introduce a new system for attendees to purchase items; instead of paying a set price for each item, buyers may pay what they will. “We’re counting on the community to be generous,” said Deborah Waite, president of the Friends of the Library. “When we have book sales, people often tell us to keep their change so that they can support the library. We trust people will be as generous at the yard sale.” Waite said that certain more valuable items, however,

Solanco’s boys’ soccer team earned its first win of the season when Brady Janssen took a throw in by Aidan Todd and scored in the 88th minute for what proved to be an overtime game-winner against Lebanon on Thursday, Oct. 6.
“That was a great game,” said head coach Remy Wright. “Both teams had about five opportunities to end the game at any time. It was truly a team effort and a wonderful game as a coach to watch.”
Solanco’s last victory came over a year ago, in the Hamburg Tournament.
In non-league action Saturday, Oct. 8, against Twin Valley, Janssen opened the scoring, taking a cross from Ayden Herr after a corner, in the 27th minute, giving the Mules the lead through the rest of the first half. The Raiders tied the game in the 47th minute and then recorded the game-winner with just three minutes left in the game.
“Both teams were awarded penalty kicks and both teams missed,” recalled Wright. “Our backup keeper Giovanni Piscitelli has been doing well lately. We all still have a lot to work on.”
Looking to rebound from a 2-0 loss to Ephrata, the girls’ soccer team hosted Elizabethtown (7-2) on Saturday morning, Oct. 8, but lost a heartbreaker, 4-3, in overtime.
Solanco came out strong and set the tone early. Sarah Landis assisted Josie Janssen in the third minute of the game. The Bears returned the favor four minutes later. E-town scored again in the 21st minute and pushed the lead to 3-1 four minutes into the second half.
Solanco’s Alyssa Harpe made it 3-2 in the 49th minute when she headed home a corner kick by Sarah
Landis. Then, seven minutes later, Landis made good on a direct kick from way out that tied the game. And that’s how the score remained through the rest of regulation and the first OT. The Bears scored the game-winner in the 92nd minute.
“That was a tough one,” said head coach Matt Jansen. “I thought we played well. The girls played hard to come back.”
The girls rebounded with two solid wins, dominating Pequea Valley 6-1 Oct. 10 followed by a 3-1 nod over Central the following night. Janssen’s Texas hat trick (4 goals) sparked the win over PV. Meg Bailey added two.
Emma Housekeeper, Bailey (1a) and Mia Daniel-Morales, with Landis dishing two assists, accounted for the scoring against the Barons.
The girls are currently ranked 11th in the AAA 16 team field.
Solanco’s Logan Wagner and Anna Sexton continued post-season play at the PIAA District 3 AAA Golf Championships held at Briarwood Golf Club, Oct. 7-8.
Wagner, a senior, shot a 75 on day one, making the cut to day two where he finished with a 77 and a 152 total that left him tied for 14th place and a trip to states.
“Logan was fourth last year in Districts, shooting 73-77 at Honey Run,” recalled head coach Greg Minnich. “He becomes the second Solanco golfer in my 17 years two qualify for states twice. Connor Sheehan went in 2012 and 2013.”
Sexton, also a senior, opened with a 91, leaving her in a tie for 11th place and making the top 18 cut. In the second round she finished with an 88. She was just four strokes shy of qualifying for states.
“Both rounds were under her season average of 93.8 and her 88 score was her second-best career round, following her 85 which she shot in this year’s home tournament at Tanglewood,” Minnich noted.
VOLLEYBALL
Wednesday, Oct. 5, the volleyball team duked it out with Lebanon and escaped with a 3-2 thriller, their second win of the season. Despite dropping the third and fourth sets by just two points each, including an ‘overtime’, if you will, 29-27 fourth set, Solanco secured the win with a solid 15-11 final set. They opened the match with a 25-17 first set and dominated the second set 25-14.
Marissa Cannizzaro (20 digs)
served up a season-high 7 aces while Alaina Herr put down 6 kills to help fuel the offense. Addison Boys (9 assists) and Emily Powl (2 blocks) also contributed.
One night later they faced Garden Spot and lost 25-14, 25-12, 25-11.
Martha Weaver and Herr recorded five kills each, but it wasn’t enough. Sophia Stoltzfus (10 assists), Cannizzaro (13 digs), Cheyenne Henry (2 aces) and Addison Boyd, Weaver, and Herr with one block each, led the way.
The tennis team competed in the L-L League Tournament over the last week though their trip to the finals fell short.
Grace Pursel (No. 3) opened with a 6-2, 7-5 win over AC’s Emma Lively but dropped a 6-3, 6-3 result in round two.
Ava Peiffer (No. 4) also worked a first-round win, outlasting AC’s Maddie Summers 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 before dropping her second round 6-2, 6-0.
At the top of the bracket, Destiny Langley faced fourth seed Jade Flores, who advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 result while Adrienne Dolan met up with Lampeter’s Rowan Kimmel who settled for a 6-1, 6-0 win.
In doubles play, Langley and Dolan earned a solid 6-4, 6-0 first round win over Cocalico’s Carlie Showalter and Hanna Weller but couldn’t get past CV’s Flores and Paula Valverde Gomez, bowing out 6-0, 6-2.
“They looked strong as a doubles team,” said head coach Annie Hammel. “Their serves were going in, they had solid returns and their net play was more in control. It was tough competition.”
Pursel and Peiffer competed in flight 2 where they dropped an 8-2 result to Etown’s Laszakovits and Mink while Caroline Lantz and Kiara Chmielecki fell 8-4 to CV’s Obeng and Tsai.
Two of the top teams in the district rankings met in Quarryville for a Section Three clash Friday, Oct. 7 and when the final buzzer sounded, only one undefeated team remained, Solanco. The top ranked Mules hung a 35-32 loss on Elizabethtown, handing the No. 4 seed Bears its first loss of the season. Solanco improved to 7-0.
“It was a great homecoming game win,” said head coach Tony Cox who also celebrated his 50th victory. “The kids played hard and never gave up and the sideline was very encouraging. Josiah Forren made it his mission to gain as many yards as he could with every carry and our defense made the plays they needed to,” he added.
E-town drew first-blood when Logan Lentz reached the endzone on a 20-yard carry. Solanco knotted the score on Forren’s one-yard plunge and took the lead early in the second frame with another Forren (70 yards, 12 carries, 12 tackles) TD, this one from five yards out. Carter Smith converted the twopoint conversion for a 14-6 lead.
The Bears cut the lead to two on a 17-yard pass play but missed the two-point conversion. Solanco made it 20-12 by halftime on Brody Mellinger’s 5-yard run.
E-town scored the first TD of the third frame, a two-yard carry and Solanco countered with Elijah Cunningham’s 23-yard pass from Mellinger (3-4 for 53 yards). Aden Herr converted the two-point run.
The visitors scored the last TD of the third quarter and the first one of the fourth to lead 32-28 but it wasn’t enough. Mellinger’s (121 yards on 17 carries) one-yard keeper with 1:38 left to play gave Solanco the lead for good. Donovan Peters knocked down Etown’s final attempt to steal the win.
After suffering a tight 1-0 loss to ELCO in their first meeting, Solanco felt they had a good chance to split the series. The Raiders, however, won 2-1 on Saturday, Oct. 8.
All the scoring happened in the last 12 minutes of the first quarter. Solanco prevented the shutout whenSaide Cook converted KatieWeaver’s assist. Caitlin Bennethum recorded three saves.
The Promise Players theater group will present “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” for its fall play
at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 4 through 6, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 10 through 13. The Thursday and Friday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. showing and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. showing.
The play follows the story of a small town 25 years after a bus accident killed the members of the local wrestling team and rattled the community. The majority of the show takes place in the Red Rocket Diner, named after the town’s sports team, where the audience gets to know the diner’s regulars: the waitresses competing to see who can convince a customer to order the strangest meal, the sheriff who stops in for his daily coffee and the discontented cook, Johnny, who dreams of escaping to the big city. When another tragedy strikes, the town’s residents and the regulars at the diner navigate the loss, and Johnny wrestles with his faith as he ruminates on life and death during his daily task of serving up breakfast.
Loft Community Partnership (LCP) recently appointed Jenna Graeff as its new director of strategic partnerships as part of an initiative to increase community engagement and grow the organization. Graeff, who grew up in the Quarryville area, graduated from Millersville University with a Master of Social Work and worked closely with the university’s Center for Public Scholarship and Social Change.
Graeff discovered Loft Community Partnership through her efforts in the community and has worked with board members from the organization on projects such as Hettie’s Hope Chest. Graeff assisted with fundraising and various operations for the initiative, which is a nonprofit that provides diapers to families in need in the Penn Manor area.
“The position of director allows a lot of room for macro social work practice and growth alongside (Loft Community Partnership),” said Graeff. “It’s a young organization and I am newly working in the field with a master’s; it’s a good match and we’ll be able to grow together.”
In her first week as director, Graeff was already coordinating several community projects. Loft Community Partnership will administer a survey for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and has plans to resume its tradition of hosting a quarterly breakfast for churches and community organizations to discern what the area’s biggest needs are and how to address them.
“We really want to dig into these operations and look at what is able to be streamlined, as well as how we can increase volunteers and

community engagement,” said Graeff. “My experience is in the intersection of a school district and community hub like Penn Manor is.” Graeff interned at the Solanco School District, where she was able to get a closer look within the area and determine how a school district connects with community resources.
“What drew us to Jenna were her experience and qualifications,” said LCP’s community liaison, Deb Meckley. “She has connections to the Penn Manor community but also has fresh eyes for our organization; it’s a unique combination.” Meckley added that the organization has a vision to expand its services to the community, as its primary goal since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has been to provide food and clothing to those affected.
Loft Community Partnership serves a wide array of community members, from school-age children to senior citizens, with the only requirement being residence in the Penn Manor School District. Prior to the organization’s establishment, Millersville Brethren in Christ Church operated the food and clothing bank
for over a decade. During this time, Meckley worked as a social worker and was a member of a committee that discussed the area’s unmet needs. In 2019, the church decided it could no longer maintain the drive, and Meckley and the committee resolved to fill the void. In late 2019, Loft Community Partnership was created. “We are always looking for volunteers, and we always need donations,” stated Graeff. “If you’re passionate about the Penn Manor community, come check us out.”

are excluded from the new system and will have a set price. Among these items are rare antiques and vacation trips.
The book sale will be held inside the library’s Pennington Family Conferences Room as well as in the lobby. All books are donated by the community, and the library hosts book sales periodically throughout the year. In addition to the book sales, the Friends of the Library operate a small bookstore inside the library that offers newer books and puzzles for purchase.
The Wakefield Lions Club will host the chicken barbecue, selling meals for a set price, which will include half-chickens, Herr’s potato chips and bottled water. Whoopie pies will be sold separately for dessert. Food tickets may be purchased in person during the event or by calling the Quarryville Library ahead of time at 717-786-1336.
The benefit sale is a joint effort between the library’s board of directors and the Friends of the Library. All of the money raised from the

The Promise Players’ board of directors met in 2019 to research potential shows but had to put its schedule on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Promise Players’ first show since the pandemic was “Smoke on the Mountain,” which was held over the summer at Rawlinsville Camp Meeting.
“‘Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon’ is about how faith helps us through difficult circumstances,” said Lanny Millette, the play’s director.
“(The Promise Players) felt like there was a good faith message in it, and it still has a light-hearted nature. It’s a message people need to hear.” The organization’s goal is to stage performances that speak to life issues and illustrate what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. Actors are cast from across the county, and those who are not placed in acting roles often assist behind the scenes with things such as lighting, stage production and operating the box office.
For each play, the Promise Players has sponsored a different nonprofit and donated any profits made; in the last 27 years, it has donated over $250,000 between several organizations. “We want to make a difference in the community,” said Millette.
“Not only is it a great night of entertainment, but you support a good cause.” “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” will benefit The Factory Ministries’ youth ministry in Paradise.
Tickets for the show may be purchased via donation online or at the door. There is a suggested monetary donation for adults, and attendees may also donate a can of nonperishable food for admission, which will be given to the community food bank in East Lampeter.

event will benefit the library directly and assist with its everyday maintenance costs. “Most people don’t realize that the library isn’t entirely supported by tax dollars,” said Waite. “Some (tax dollars) go to the library, but in the last 15 years or so fundraising has become a constant necessity to keep (the library) functioning. Even day-to-day operations need extra money and support.”
The Quarryville Library offers much to the community beyond free literature; programs for several different age groups, book clubs and museum passes are only a few of its other contributions to Quarryville residents.
“The library is a community hub for the Southern End,” stated Waite. “There’s a lot more going on there than just books being checked out, and it’s more important than people think.”
