Walk Will Benefit Local and Global Charities

The 46th Solanco CROP

Hunger Walk provides an ideal opportunity to get some exercise while helping neighbors and people from around the globe.

The CROP Walk will be held rain or shine on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood. Participants should arrive by 8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9 a.m. The trail is 5 miles, and there will be a shorter, family-friendly route available. Preregistration is not required. Co-chairs Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble are spearheading the event, and representatives from Refton Brethren in Christ Church, Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, Mt. Eden Lutheran Church, and Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren are assisting with the planning. For more information, email Reinhart at ereinhart1403@comcast.net.

Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank will receive 25% of the proceeds, with the rest going to Church World Service, a group

working to reduce hunger and poverty across the world. Since starting in 1980, the CROP Walk has raised more than $480,000.

Their business is picking up.

One of the Solanco Area Girl Scouts’ most recent community projects was cleaning trash from the Solanco Fairgrounds on Sept. 20, the morning after the Solanco Fair came to a close.

said local Girl Scouts have been pitching in since the 1980s. “It’s a way to help out the fair association, because they put so many hours into this,” Rineer said. “This is just one less thing they have to worry about, and the girls enjoy coming out and supporting the community.”

Through Faithful Give,

There are so many great causes in Lancaster County. Locally, there are so many life-affirming nonprofits performing life-altering work.

The only thing greater is the generosity of Lancaster County residents.

Faithful Give seeks to link those donors and causes and to enhance that great work.

“Lancaster County has got to be one of the most generous counties in the nation,” said Dave Kieffer, president of Faithful Give. “I feel like it gives God glory to highlight every way that Lancaster County needs to be served. There are a lot of people here carrying out Jesus’ ministry. It’s about giving your money, but it’s also about giving your time, treasures and talents. Our goal is to connect the donors and the need.”

Overseen by an eight-member board, Faithful Give is a county-wide, online giving extravaganza that also promotes volunteering, committed prayer partnerships and general feelings of altruism. This year’s Faithful Give will be conducted over three days, from midnight on Sunday, Oct. 19, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Contributors to Faithful Give can donate to a general fund or designate their donations to specific participating causes or nonprofits.

Donations to Faithful Give can be made by credit card, electronic fund transfer or e-check at https://faithfulgive.org/ donate-sponsor.

experience. “I think it’s a chance for them to be out and be in the community,” she said. “It’s a chance for them to participate in an activity that they’re familiar with. They’re here at the fair, they see what’s happening, and they get their piece of it to contribute back to the community. It’s taking care of the grounds, because they’re here for other events and things throughout the year.”

The Solanco Area Girl Scouts have troops for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade. The troops encompass five age groups - kindergarten and first grade, second and third grades, fourth and fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and high school.

“Girl Scouts doesn’t require certain awards or badges to be earned to move to the next

grade level,” said Rineer. “It is strictly based on grade in school. We are also flexible, so if kids play sports or are involved in other activities, we work with them so they can attend events or activities with the troop.”

The Scouts have been meeting at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church for 47 years, and four members of the current lead -

ership have come through the program at Chestnut Level and are now serving on the leadership team.

“Our troops work on a variety of badges and attend activities sponsored by the Girl Scout Council as well as local events,” said Rineer. “We do community service with the Wakefield Lions Club and Friends of Fishing Creek

and other opportunities as they are made available. Our goal as a leadership team is to provide opportunities for the girls to explore their communities to grow in leadership, build courage, and make their communities better.”

For more information, contact Rineer at scoutrineer6 @comcast.net.

Donors and supporters gather at an event associated with

“Faithful Give exists to support and advocate for faith-based, biblically faithful organizations in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer.

“We’re not designed to compete; we’re focused on Faithful Give and what we do. Healthy competition can improve the outcome for all organizations. Generosity begets generosity.”

Faithful Give is also sponsoring

two in-person events as part of this year’s initiative.

The first is a kickoff prayer breakfast that will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. Leaders and representatives of some of the charitable causes will be present to meet

donors and answer questions.

Faithful Give will informally conclude its efforts with a community celebration event and expo on Oct. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata. That family-friendly gathering will feature bounce houses, a strolling magician, balloon animals, face painting, nine holes of miniature golf and fellowship.

“One hundred percent of your money goes straight to where you designate it,” said Kieffer. “We encourage people to give to nonprofits throughout the year. Lancaster County people steward their money well. We’re really trying to expand our definition of generosity. The organizations I get behind most are the ones who have won my heart. It helps me to buy into their mission.”

Faithful Give, which does not maintain a physical office, is aiming to raise a total of $2 million for 130 Lancaster County causes like Christian schools, youth and college programs, adult programs, elderly care, human services and overseas organizations headquartered locally. Last year, Faithful Give raised more than $1.568 million from 2,933 donors.

“There are probably a thousand great causes in Lancaster County doing great work,” said Kieffer. “Faithful Give is designed to come alongside nonprofits with a Christian vision or a Christian philosophy of what benefits the community. Our goal isn’t to replace anything else. It’s to help in ways we can and feel called to.”

“The youth will be educated,” continued Kieffer, “the homeless will be cared for, families will find resources they need, the arts will be advanced in a way that will help the community, houses will be built, and early education programs will be supported. Some of these ministries cross over.”

Since its inception in 2023, Faithful Give has raised more than $2.3 million for local nonprofits.

“I think Lancaster County has a rich heritage of biblically led, faithful-led nonprofits,” said Kieffer.

Church Sets Community Meal

Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, Oct. 16.

Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge.

Those who would like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.

“Faithful Give exists to celebrate and nurture that and protect that mission for the future. Since it was started, it’s grown in number and in quality. It’s also grown in reputation. I think we’ve grown in trust with our donors, and we’ve grown in trust with our causes. We’ve delivered on what we’ve promised.”

Workforce Development Board Receives Grant

The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) has received a $10,000 grant from the PPL Foundation to support and expand Career Ready Lancaster! (CRL!), a collaborative business-education partnership dedicated to preparing

Lancaster County’s future workforce.

CRL! brings together schools, businesses, and community organizations to connect students and job seekers with career pathways. By fostering career exploration, apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, and work-based learning opportunities, CRL! works to help ensure Lancaster’s workforce is ready to meet the needs of local employers while empowering individuals to achieve longterm success.

The PPL Foundation’s Empowering Communities grants are awarded to organizations that strengthen workforce development, advance education, and improve the vitality of communities. This funding will allow CRL! to expand outreach and engagement - particularly among underserved populations - while creating more opportunities for individuals to discover and pursue rewarding careers.

CROP Walk

“There’s a lot of hunger, there’s a lot of needs in the world, and this is a very good way to help it,” Reinhart said. “We can help Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, and we can reach out to needs all around the world. Church World Service has connections in countries everywhere. They do things like help with water projects. They help with a lot of things that provide just basic needs. We have so much here, and we just need to share with others.”

Trimble noted that the CROP Walk will also be a time for participants to meet their neighbors. “People can communicate with one another and have fellowship with one another,” he said. “They can enjoy nature. It’s over at Muddy Run, and it’s safe and secure.”

from pg 1

Reinhart emphasized it’s a family-friendly event. “You can bring your children. You can bring your dogs to walk,” she said. “There is a little tiny playground close to the pavilion. Before we start the walk, people will have a chance to paint little rocks that then they can take. We’re also going to have little handheld signs that they can take with them.”

After the walk, there will refreshments, including water, apples, and snacks.

“We also have a wonderful sponsor in C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant,” said Reinhart. “If people raise at least $100 by the day of the walk, they get a $10 gift card for C.R. Lapp’s, so we’re very appreciative of their support. If they are part of a church, they can get envelopes or they can just show up that day. We’re happy to have people show up if they like.”

The CROP Walk gets bigger and better every year. “We changed it 20 years ago,” said Reinhart. “They were walking in Quarryville, which was fine on a Sunday afternoon. When Don and I took over, I think it was 2006, we moved it to Saturday morning to the park. It’s much safer. You don’t have to cross the streets. I think we’ve done a lot to improve the walk and make it way more popular because it’s just a fun family day. And it’s a good witness to your children. If you want to show your children about caring, you bring them, and they learn a lot about doing something for someone else.”
