Empty Bowls from pg 1 at the Pack House Cottage in Quarryville, and other items donated by businesses such as Pristine Auto Detailing, Hershey Gardens & Car Museum and Outback Toys. After dinner and the silent auction wrap up at 6:30 p.m., guests will have a chance to learn more about SNM’s work in the community and hear the story of a family supported by the organization. Before the evening concludes at 7 p.m., each attendee may choose from a collection of handmade ceramic bowls made by students in Solanco School District and several local artists, including members of the Octorara Art Association and Albright Pottery Studio. For many students, participating in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser serves as an opportunity to give back to the community and support a good cause. Solanco High School art teacher Kesse Humphreys, who teaches the school’s ceramics class, also used the project to challenge his students with trying a new technique and creatively discern what supporting the community means to them. When starting the
Empty Bowls project in September, Humphreys tasked his students with incorporating a design that they felt would symbolize the concept of giving, kindness and compassion. Some students’ designs incorporated floral patterns and vines to represent growth and connection in communities that support its members; other students adorned their bowls with rays of sunlight to denote the warmth of kindness. Humphreys also had his students try a new technique called water etching when creating their bowl, and the materials for the project were purchased by SNM. “I encouraged students to come up with unique interpretations. Maybe someone won’t initially know what the design means, but each design came from a place of meaning for students,” Humphreys said. “It’s about showing students that they have the power to make somebody’s life better, whether that’s with a bowl or a smile.” For more information or to purchase a ticket for the Empty Bowls Fundraiser, visit https://tinyurl.com/ snmemptybowls.

Mantooth, who serves as the Conesto ga- Susquehannock’s tribe historian, also offered a Native American perspective on ecological issues, as well as some of his tribe’s cultural practices and connection to the environment. Mantooth discussed the Conestoga-Susquehannock tribe’s efforts to receive state and federal recognition, which would allow it to access additional resources needed to revitalize the land. In addition to HOP’s monthly program series, Valentine hopes to partner with local schools to implement various programs and activities designed to foster empathy and inclusion among students of all ages. The students’ artworks are then linked together to demonstrate how kindness can spread. Other suggestions prompt students to obser ve a weekly or monthly “Random Acts of Kindness Day” or to establish a newsletter to promote kindness in their school and local community. Valentine is also seeking schools interested in partnering with HOP to create “Kindness Clubs” to offer a space for students to suggest their own activities and to work together to bring compassion to the classroom. “So many kids are bullied or
