Bethesda UMC To Celebrate 175 Years During Homecoming By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When the congregation of Bethesda United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1993, a booklet summarizing its history was created. In it, the authors wrote, “The glory of Bethesda is not as a shrine, but as a live, growing church where the Gospel of Jesus Christ is being preached, where the Word of God is being taught to the rising generation of the community. May we remain steadfast and immovable in the ages to come.” Now, 25 years later, the church is once again celebrating the past and anticipating the future. “When you look back, you realize how fruitful it was back then and how it can be again,” observed longtime church member Pete Metzler. Church member Sidney Graver noted that “perseverance” is the defining characteristic of the small congregation that worships at 1086 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. A new sign on the north side of Holtwood Road (Route 372) points up the hill to the church campus. See Bethesda Homecoming pg 2
Bethesda United Methodist Church members are eagerly anticipating homecoming on Oct. 21. The special event will run nearly all day in celebration of the congregation’s 175th anniversary.
