Most artists can recall one of the first moments in their lives that they discovered the inner world of creativity. Solanco High School art teacher Kesse Humphreys remembers spending his youth tinkering with sculptures in his parents’ garage while his siblings were out playing with friends. Piper Long, a senior at Solanco High School, was inspired to pick up a paintbrush after seeing the art projects her older brother would bring home from school. Adeline Wooters, another Solanco Kesse Humphreys (center) and his student helpers Adeline Wooters High School senior, fondly recollects art (left) and Piper Long invite young artists to explore their creative

any people believe it is their responsibility to help those in need. From volunteering at local food banks to completing service projects in under-resourced communities, there is no shortage of ways to make a positive impact in both one’s own neighborhood and abroad. According to Mary Etta Reinhart, organizer of the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk, just because you’re working to serve the community, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun while doing it. The 47th annual Solanco CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood. Participants will gather at the park’s pavilion at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will commence shortly after at 9 a.m. Walkers will have the option of following an approximately 5-mile-long trail through the park or an alternate, shorter route that better accommodates families with young children and individuals with limited mobility. Participants will be invited to

enjoy light refreshments and fellowship after the end of the walk. “The whole idea is to raise funds for the hungry, both here in the local community and in other parts of the world,” Reinhart said. “That’s the real purpose, but we want to have fun while we’re doing it.” For the first time this year, a bagpiper will provide live music to kick off the start of the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk. In recent years, Reinhart began incorporating children’s activities such as coloring books and a station where participants may paint encouraging messages on rocks to place along the trail for walkers. The Solanco CROP Hunger Walk is part of a nationwide initiative to raise money for Church World Service, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting food insecurity around the globe. Since the first Solanco CROP Hunger Walk was held in 1980, the annual event has raised more than $500,000; 25 percent of the proceeds benefit Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville, and the remaining funds aid Church World Maverick Tshudy led last year’s Solanco CROP Hunger Walk

exercises that her aunt would task her with as a kid. On Oct. 1, Humphreys and his student helpers launched “Carlson Kids! Art at the Library,” a new program series that aims to give young artists in the Southern End an opportunity to discover their own creative potential. The series will take place twice per month on select Thursdays and Saturdays in the C. X. Carlson Cultural Room at Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. Each session will feature different activities for children ages 6 to 12 to explore a variety of mediums and artistic styles inspired by the work of legendary local artist Charles X. Carlson. Humphreys was inspired to create “Carlson Kids! Art at the Library” after speaking with Quarryville Library’s program manager, Sharon Roche, last summer. “Sharon and I started sharing our dreams about cool things we could offer the community,” said Humphreys. “I had been wanting to reach out to the C. X. Carlson Cultural Trust for a while about putting together a program to offer art classes at the library.” “I think I found a kindred spirit in (Humphreys),” Roche said. “We both had

a bucket list of things we wanted to offer the community, but I couldn’t afford to hire artists and didn’t have time to run another program myself.” After receiving grant funding from the C. X. Carlson Cultural Trust, Humphreys assembled a group of high school art students to help lead program activities and to have an opportunity to mentor the next generation of artists. Although the primary goal of “Carlson Kids! Art at the Library” is to engage children with a broad range of creative activities, student coaches such as Adeline and Piper will help Humphreys introduce participants to Carlson’s favorite mediums, including watercolors, pastel drawing, charcoal drawing and sculpture. T he next session of “Carlson Kids! Art at the Library” will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 17. The final session of the month will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. Registration is required, but walk-ins will be accepted as space p e r m i t s . gift fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event is free to attend, and all proceeds will benefit the participating nonprofits. “I’m always trying to make things run more smoothly,” said Knepper. “We change things based on feedback. Each year we’re just always trying to improve on how we reach people and engage with them. We’re connected with different nonprofits, and we try to promote the things that the nonprofits are doing. We all benefit when we’re connected to the community. We try to be a conduit of that.” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s gift fair will feature the work, missions and services provided by 35 nonprofits and 20 marketplace

vendors. There will also be six food trucks, live music and book readings. “It’s an opportunity to catch up with a friend. It’s great for all ages,” said Knepper, a nurse who resides in East Hempfield Township. “You have to make choices easy for people. I think most people want to be conscientious gift givers or shoppers in general. The gift fair is a one-stop shop for gifts that make a difference. We’ve kind of done the screening to make it easy.” Among the items available for purchase are charitable donations in a loved one’s name, instructional lessons for underprivileged individuals and gifts made from repurposed materials. “There’s a wide range of items you can find there,” said Knepper. “I think See Gifts pg 7

One of the things that make Gifts That Give Hope so special is that it thrives in the no-judgment zone. The local nonprofit is currently gearing up for this year’s foray into the world of alternative gift giving. “We try to promote more charitable giving,” said Jenn Knepper, the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “I started to think about giving more

meaningful gifts to my parents, things like promoting women’s education around the world. I felt like that was something my parents encouraged for me. I think it’s a chance to be creative, like what are the causes that are important to people?” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s upcoming gift festival de-emphasizes material items and emphasizes experiences, altruism and charitable causes. because the world feels so overwhelming, giving gifts like that can feel like tangible steps in the right direction. The gift fair has a very altruistic, collaborative, community type of environment. It always lifts my spirits. One of my strengths is building connections, and the gift fair is the epitome of that. Nobody wants to reinvent wheels, and the gift fair helps build bridges.” More than 1,500 people are expected to attend Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s fair. In the past, the event has raised as much as $30,000 collectively for the participating nonprofits. “I think they’re people who are conscientious about how

they live their lives,” said Knepper. “They like to help other people. They’re people with a wide range of interests. I think the gift fair inspires a lot of different people.” The gift fair is the only event that Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster sponsors throughout the year. “I really do love seeing people come together and make connections,” said Knepper. “I really love all the behind-the-scenes work throughout the year. It brings me a lot of joy. The gift fair lifts my spirits when I see all these people trying to help.” For additional information, go to www.gifts thatgivehopelancaster.org.

Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on the animals it serves.
