Celebrating Solid Rock School-year programs for students in kindergarten through ninth grade will begin at Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Additionally, the Christian ministry has planned two fundraising events that will take place in the coming weeks. An online auction will be held from Monday, Oct. 19, to Thursday, Oct. 29. The third annual 5K and fun run has been set for Saturday, Oct. 31. Registration for the 5K must be completed by Monday, Oct. 12, to be guaranteed an event T-shirt.

Typically, live and silent auctions are held in conjunction with a ham dinner, but a sit-down meal for 200 people was not feasible with social distancing guidelines.

“We’re hoping it’s a good thing,” Dana remarked. “We hear people do better on virtual auctions than in person.” She noted that participation in an online auction is not limited to the capacity of the fellowship hall where Solid Rock’s in-person auctions were held. Individuals from anywhere may place bids, as long as they are able to pick up their items at Solid Rock from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 31. Payment will be made at pickup, and cash and check will be preferred.

Fall and home décor, jewelry, indoor furniture, a vintage table, gardening supplies, gift certificates, and more have been donated for the auction. Union Presbyterian Church continued its tradition of contributing a hand-knotted comforter, and Wesley Church repeated its popular package of a fire pit and s’mores supplies. Solanco CROP Walk To Mark 40th Anniversary

When the 2020 Solanco CROP Hunger Walk takes place on Saturday, Oct. 17, participants may help to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first walk, which was held in 1980. There will be several photo opportunities, said planning committee member Mary Etta Reinhart.

“We’re trying to make it a fun event but a socially distanced event,” she noted.

Reinhart shared that the planning committee discussed the walk in light of coronavirus mitigation guidelines and decided to go ahead with holding the event because it takes place entirely outdoors. Some of the procedures have been modified for safety. Registration

As one of its effots to help Martic Elementary School, the pantry will hold a drivethrough chicken barbecue event at the school, 266 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood, on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. until sold out. Only cash will be accepted, and tickets will not be sold in advance.

The meals will include chicken quarters, applesauce, chips, dessert, and beverages. Chicken quarters may be purchased a la carte.

Proceeds will be shared between the Martic Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and Martic Pantry.

Clark said community support is vital right now, adding, “Without … fundraisers, we can’t do anything for the kids.

We do everything we can to help kids have fun, be kids, (and) have assemblies. And we want to make sure we have the funds we need when we get back to normal.”

Lehman and her husband, Steve, founded Martic Pantry in 2015 as a way to provide food to households in need in Martic Township.

Pantry clients receive reloadable cash cards that can be used to buy groceries at the Lehmans’ Martic Store, 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood.

“We really appreciate the Martic Pantry, the Lehmans, and what they do for the school, the way they support families,” Clark commented.

“If we need things for the school, lunches, we go to them. Their pantry is for people who need the help.

They’re good people with good hearts.”

The members of the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) know that good records are key to a successful outcome, and they are depending on this concept for the annual turkey supper set for Saturday, Oct. 10. “We like to take notes after each event and plan for the next year,” said MOPW member Debbie Hoover. “The notes from last year said to plan for 500 (meals).”

In previous years, between takeout orders and on-site diners, the MOPW served about 400 meals. Last year’s turnout was so good that the organizers recommended increasing capacity. While they are doing just that, safety guidelines for mitigating the coronavirus have resulted in the MOPW planning to serve the meal entirely via takeout. A drive-through line will be set up around Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing until sold out.

The meals will include roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, corn, mashed potatoes, rolls and butter, pepper cabbage, applesauce, cranberry sauce, and whoopie pies. MOPW members prepare most of the food.

“We peel our own potatoes, cook our own turkey, make our own pepper cabbage, and make our own stuffing and gravy,” Hoover commented. “The corn is homegrown. We husked and froze it ourselves.”

Although labor-intensive, handling the majority of the prep allows the MOPW to realize a greater profit on the dinner. “The women’s association is very mission-oriented.

This is a way that we can raise money for missions,” Hoover explained.

The MOPW prefers to use the funds locally. The group

contributes to Boy Scout Troop 87, which is chartered by MOPC; Flowing Oil community meals; Solid Rock Youth Ministries; and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. It also purchases Christmas gifts for residents at the Ware Presbyterian Village and provides financial gifts to families as needs arise.

“It’s all passed on to try to help someone,” Hoover remarked.

Price said she anticipates participation will be down from the 175 entrants averaged at the previous two 5Ks, but she is praying for a sustained financial impact. The inaugural race in 2018 generated $7,500, which had been doubled last year until an anonymous donor matched the amount for a total of $30,000. “It totally blew my mind,” Price said of the unexpected gift. “Our goal this year is $15,000. We’ll see what God will do.”

I Timothy 4:12 reads, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.” Isabella Astuto, Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior and a member of the cast of the school’s upcoming production of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” noted a main message of the play is to not disregard the knowledge of youths. “Just because children are younger, (that) doesn’t mean there aren’t also things that kids can experience that are worthwhile to learn and know,” she said, adding that a lot of the vignettes in the play reflect that theme.

“Rabies can be transmitted in saliva - not just through bites - and humans have thousands of tiny cuts on our hands. You must be tested after touching (a wild animal).”

Even if animals do not display symptoms of rabies, they might be carrying the deadly neurological disease. Young recommends caution when capturing and transporting injured rabies vector species: raccoons, groundhogs, foxes, skunks, bats, and coyotes.

Handlers may protect themselves from touching an animal with bare hands by wearing heavy gloves and wrapping the animal in a thick towel.

Raven Ridge started in Young’s townhome but is now located in a circa 1898 barn that has been upgraded to include running water, electricity, and new windows.

New flooring was slated for installation on Oct. 5, so the number of animals staying at the center has been limited. Young has been referring some animals to other rehab centers. Once the renovation is completed, the center will be able to operate as usual.

Barron Von Vulture is one of the ambassador animals that Raven Ridge Wildlife Center founder and director Tracie Young takes to educational presentations.

Fish and Wildlife Service to both provide wildlife rehabilitation services to raptors, mammals, and waterfowl and to offer wildlife education programs. The permits certify that Young has the required knowledge and skills to safely handle wild animals, and they protect her from state laws that levy fines of up to $1,500 for taking or possessing wildlife.

“Sometimes good intentions by a person is not good for the animal,” Young said.

“The instinct is to cuddle and love on them, (but) we keep them wild. We want to fix them, get them healthy, and get them back out (into their habitats).”

Young also stressed that improper handling of wild animals can put humans at risk of serious diseases, which is one of the reasons home care is unlawful. “Don’t handle them yourself. Whoever handles these animals must

The center is also raising two baby opossums that fell into a garbage can. When they are old enough to survive on their own, they will be released into the wild.

The center also has ambassador animals that were unable to be released into the wild. Young’s veterinarian submitted letters to the Game Commission as part of the permitting process. “We take our ambassadors out to teach the public about these animals,” Young said. “We don’t receive any state, local, or federal funding. The programs bring in revenue.”

Well, prior to COVID-19, they did. 2020 had been set to be the center’s busiest yet, with a full calendar of programs, but everything has been canceled. Young and her team are working on creating online presentations to fill the gap.

Without the income from programs, the budget is running especially lean. Rehabilitating wild animals is a service offered free of charge to the public, but it is expensive.

The 5K race and fun run will have a superhero theme. Wearing costumes will not be mandatory but is encouraged, said race director Mary Price.

“We wanted to do something to make it a little bit more fun,” Price explained. “Who’s been your hero through (everything this year)? We’ve heard so much about essential workers; they’re heroes too.”

Individually wrapped refreshments, along with hot tea and coffee, will be available before the walk begins at 9 a.m. and upon participants’ return.

The Solanco CROP Hunger Walk is 5 miles long. The first part of the route will take place on a paved trail. Individuals will have the option of then proceeding onto grassy paths, or they may complete another loop on the pavement. Reinhart said the entirely paved route is ideal for people with strollers.

Masks will not need to be worn if participants maintain

social distance. Leashed dogs are welcome at the event.

Reinhart related that at last year’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the nationwide CROP Hunger Walk, one of the celebratory photos featured a dog that has participated in five walks.

The committee has created three ways to participate in the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk.

First, individuals may do as they have in previous years and join the walk in person. They may pick up fundraising envelopes by contacting Reinhart at 717-808-4306 or ereinhart403@comcast.net and solicit donations from friends, family members, co-workers, and others. Funds may be turned in on Oct. 17 or within two weeks after the walk.

Second, individuals may participate entirely virtually by creating a fundraising page at

www.crophungerwalk.org /quarryvillepa and committing to complete a 5-mile walk.

Fundraising may be done entirely digitally, so participants never need to be face-to-face with anyone.

The third option is a hybrid of the other two. Participants may pick up envelopes and collect donations from others but complete the 5 miles at another time or location.

“Any variation works,” Reinhart commented.

However the money is collected, the important thing is that it is collected. The proceeds will be divided, with 75% going to Church World Service and 25% to the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank.

“The need is up. The need is huge worldwide,” Reinhart said.

Isabella noted that although the piece is silly, it also points out the value in each person’s experience.

Cast member Megan Esch said that she sees value the individual vignettes. “They each have a purpose and teach lessons,” she said, noting that her favorite is “Problems and Inconveniences,” which features an older person looking back on irrational outbursts of the past. “(The person now) realizes the difference between a problem and an inconvenience,” she shared.

The small cast size and adaptability to performing outdoors also present challenges for the students. “We only have five weeks to get this together,” said Isabella.

“It’s a struggle having to adapt to the times to be able to get this done.” Josiah agreed, noting that each actor plays a number of characters with distinct personalities.

Play director Dean Sauder said that he chose the show for several reasons, including having produced it before, the set’s easy adaptation to an outdoor setting, and its compatibility with social distancing the ensemble cast. The series of vignettes includes characters such as a shy little boy who insists on playing “pig” in his class production of “Cinderella,” a man whose dream of flying carries him over Los Angeles in a lawn chair buoyed by weather balloons, a “mother of the bride” who has staged a perfect wedding until fate arrives, and a modern-day Greek philosopher who finds the meaning of life in a piece of a broken mirror from World War II. Because of his familiarity with the show, Sauder has encouraged the students to bring their own ideas to the production. “I am enjoying watching them create,” he noted.

Car Show To Benefit Santa’s Helpers Glenn Davis is adamant that the Santa’s Helpers car show set for Saturday, Oct. 17, take center stage over the organization’s presence in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District.

“We like to be under the radar,” Glenn said. “We just need the car show to do well so we can support the kids.”

This is the group’s first car show, although Glenn has attended plenty. He bought a fully restored 1967 Camaro with modifications about 10 years ago. “It would’ve been a very good leading competitor on the drag strip back in its time,” Glenn remarked. “I’ve always been attracted to Camaros. It was my dream car in high school.”

Glenn invites other owners of dream vehicles to bring their cars, trucks, and motorcycles to the Santa’s Helpers car show. Street rods, muscle cars, antiques, imports, and more will be welcome. Trophies will be awarded in eight categories.

“Everyone’s got a pride factor in their hobby or toy,” Glenn said. “That’s why we didn’t limit them.”

The car show will be held at

the Lampeter Fire Company grounds, 851 Village Road, Lancaster, from noon to 4 p.m. In the event of rain, the car show will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. Most of the area’s other car shows were canceled this year, so Glenn is anticipating a big crowd.

“I’m hoping there are a lot of other car buffs like myself who are chomping at the bit to get out,” Glenn said. “I think it’s going to be a very fun event. I hope to see a lot of people out there.”

A fee has been set to exhibit a vehicle. Spectators may attend free of charge. To supplement the eye candy, the event will include music; prize drawings for car cleaning kits, gift cards, cash, and more; photo opportunities with motorhead models by donation; and wood-grilled burgers and hot dogs, other food, and beverages for sale.

There will also be a stand where attendees may register to sponsor a child for this year’s gift-giving season. The primary fundraiser for Santa’s Helpers has been a designer bag bingo that would sell out several weeks in advance and raise $15,000.

“COVID-19 put a kibosh to that this year,” Glenn

remarked. “The car show won’t raise the funds the bingo did, but something’s better than nothing.”

Glenn explained that he and his wife, Johanna, started Santa’s Helpers in 1988 when she noticed that a student at Willow Street Elementary School needed a winter jacket.

The Davises purchased outerwear and some other items for the child and delivered them anonymously. The project snowballed from there, with Santa’s Helpers providing clothing and Christmas gifts to an increasing number of students. In 2019, about

100 students in L-S received gifts. The organization spends about $150 per recipient.

For each of the past 23 years, the Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends event has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local nonprofit organizations.

With the health and safety of co-workers and customers in mind, Boscov’s has modified the event this year, and the event has been extended to two days to avoid crowding and allow for social distancing. Boscov ’s Friends Helping Friends will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Thursday, Oct. 15.

As part of the 24th annual event, shoppers will receive a 20% discount off the lowest sale prices both in-store and online. At checkout, shoppers will designate a nonprofit from the list of participating

organizations to receive a donation of 5% of the purchase price. There are no tickets to purchase in advance.
