New Hope Counseling Center will celebrate its 25-year anniversary with a drop-in gathering and silent auction on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. The event has the theme “Rediscovering the New Hope Chest,” and it will feature food from local restaurants and live entertainment.
Multiple restaurants, such as Oola Bowls and The Daily Grind, will offer small plates of food and samples. At 5:30 p.m., Jesse Rothacker of the Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary will provide live entertainment for guests. At 6:30 p.m., Glenn Hough’s One-Man Band will perform. There are set prices for adults and for children between
the ages of 5 and 12, with a maximum cost for a family. Food and entertainment are included in the price of admission. To purchase tickets, visit https://tinyurl.com /newhopechest.
The theme of the event will recognize the community thrift store that raises the funds required to operate New Hope. In the years immediately following the founding of New Hope, the organization faced significant financial obstacles. New Hope’s financial challenges and mission to provide counseling services to clients regardless of their ability to pay precipitated the founding of the New Hope Community Closet in 2004. Since then, the profits from the store as well as events and support from donors have financially stabilized New Hope.
“The thing that has been the most important to me is to help
New Hope continue to grow and remain a viable organization in the Southern End,” said Deb Riddell, executive director for New Hope. “Since the beginning, the board has wanted to offer counseling services to anyone who needs it. It doesn’t matter if someone can’t find the money to pay.” Riddell first became involved with New Hope as an employee at the thrift store, where she worked until 2015. She left the thrift store and began working in Lancaster until she returned to Quarryville and applied for the position of executive director. Riddell has served as New Hope’s executive director for three years and hopes to expand its ministry and community impact in years to come.

Mennonite Life invites people to immerse themselves in the cultures of early European and indigenous people of Lancaster County at the Maize and Snitz Market Fair on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain-orshine event will be held at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street.
Attendees may amble through an 18th-century themed Market Fair and engage with artisans demonstrating early American trades. They may also visit the home built in 1719 for the Herr family or learn about indigenous life by experiencing the Lancaster Longhouse. A variety of handcrafted items will be available for purchase, including redware pottery, hand-dyed wool yarn, hand-turned wooden implements, wrought iron, bobbin lace, and 18th-century paper goods. Professional tradespeople will demonstrate baking and hearth cooking both days.
Featured interpreters will include Barry Lee, Henry Spadt and Mark Turdo.
Lee, of the Munsee tribe, will present his handmade replicas of historic wampum belts and artwork. When not sharing his cultural history with the public, he performs with his wife, Barbara, as the musical group Spirit Wing.
Spadt will interpret 17th- and 18th-century history, focusing on the motivations for behaviors and interactions among Europeans and native tribes. He will interpret Iroquois material culture and trade items.
A historian and museum curator, Turdo has been researching early American cider making for the past 20 years. On Friday, he will discuss the history of cider along with his experiments in re-creating 18thcentury recipes.
Separate ticket fees have been set for adults and for youths. Admission is free for children age 6 and under. Attendees may pay at the event or prepurchase tickets at www.mennonitelife.org. Masking at this event is optional.

Addressing Headlight Glare
Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.
Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.
In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road
Fall Fest
or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.
- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.
- Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.
- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.
- Change your line of sight. Do
not look directly into oncoming headlights.
Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not focusing on the beams.
- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses to wear in highglare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.
- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer.
- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.
These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

This will be the first Fall Fest held at Boehm’s Church. For 34 years, the church held an annual Apple Festival, a tradition that ended during the COVID-19 pandemic. After enduring many challenges over the past couple years, members of the church decided it was time to adopt a new tradition in the spirit of the Apple Festival in an effort to bring the community together once more.
“Now that the pandemic has winded down, we thought it was important to get the community back together on church grounds,” said Karen Karr, a member of Boehm’s Church for over 30 years and a coordinator of Fall Fest. “We’ve added some things that the Apple Festival didn’t have and we’re hoping to make Fall Fest a yearly tradition.”
Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue will be present at Fall Fest, accompanied by rescued dogs, to raise funds for the organization and to educate attendees on its mission. Based in Chester County, Lucky Dawg is a nokill, foster based animal rescue run entirely by volunteers that rescues unwanted or abused animals in the area and places them in better homes.
Built in 1791, Boehm’s Chapel is one of the oldest Methodist churches in the country.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., hayrides through the church grounds will be available. Guests will be able to tour the historic Boehm’s Chapel and tying shed, and golf cart rides through the property will be available for those unable to tour the area by foot. Built in 1791, Boehm’s Chapel is one of the oldest Methodist churches in the country. It was initially constructed
for those who wished to have their weddings on church grounds, and the tying shed was made so the bride and groom would have an area to change before the wedding. The Boehm’s Chapel Society will offer more information on the property’s history at the event.

Wagner, Sexton Qualify for Districts in Golf
Solanco’s Logan Wagner carded a 74 and finished fourth in the L-L League Championships Monday, Sept. 26 at Fairview Golf Course and qualified for districts for the fourth straight year. Joining him in the post-season will be fellow senior teammate Anna Sexton who fired a 101 in the girls’ competition.
The boys finished 6th with a team score of 339. Warwick, with a 331, was fourth.
“It was a very windy day, and the pin placements were very tough,” note head coach Greg Minnich. “I thought the kids did well. Fourth for Logan is his highest career finish.”
Brayden Herr (83), Hudson Brown (90), and Wyatt Landis (92) rounded out the top four. Luke Herr (95) and Nathan Tucker (99) also competed.
Districts will be held at Briarwood on Oct. 7-8.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
The girls’ volleyball team got off to a slow start in Lampeter Thursday, Sept. 22, and though they picked up the pace after a 25-7 first set loss, the momentum was with the Pioneers who went on to win 25-13, 25-15.
“They served extremely well, and we struggled to receive that serve,” said head coach Dillon Costrello. “You can’t get the offense going if you can’t receive the serve. Their short serve was very effective.”
Marissa Cannizzaro charted 8 digs and Alaina Herr put up 1 block and put down 3 kills. Martha Weaver was credited with 1 assist and both Addison Boyd and Sophia Stoltzfus each dished 3 assists.
Solanco struggled on Monday as well, bowing out 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 at Linville Hill Christian School. Cheyenne Henry stepped up to lead with 3 aces and 5 kills. Madison Boyle (3 aces), Boyd (5 assists) and Cannizzaro (13 assists) also contributed.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
After starting the season with seven straight wins, the girls’ soccer team suffered its fifth straight loss, a 4-1 loss to Cedar Crest Saturday morning. The visitors knocked in three goals in the first 17 minutes to gain early momentum.
“We make a few mistakes here and there and a few breaks haven’t gone our way,” said head coach Matt Janssen. “I am confident we will get back on track,” he continued. “We have to trust our abilities and capitalize on our chances.”
The visitors scored three first half goals over the first 17 minutes. Solanco prevented the shutout when Josie Janssen scored on a one time shot from just outside the penalty area off an assist from Mia Daniel-Morales.
“Josie has been getting her chances,” said Janssen. “She, Meg Bailey and Alyssa Harpe are doing a nice job of creating opportunities, but the opposing defense and goalkeepers have made some big plays to keep us from finishing.”
Solanco got back on track with Tuesday’s 8-1 victory over Garden Spot. It was their second highest goal total of the season. Bailey led the charge with a hat trick. Harpe, Alanna
FIELD HOCKEY
The field hockey team slipped to 3-8-1 overall with a pair of back-toback losses. At home Thursday, Sept. 22 Elco slipped in the game winner late in the fourth quarter despite Solanco holding an 8-4 advantage in corners.
At Octorara on Friday the hosts found the back of the net twice en route to a 3-1 final. Sadie Cook, assisted by Kate Kauffman, made it a 2-1 game in the second quarter but the Braves notched an insurance goal in the third frame.
Solanco again held a 5-1 edge in corners and was about even in shots on goal, 8-7. Caitlin Bennethum (4 saves) and Kinsey Rhoades (1 save) shared time in goal.
Last Tuesday Kate Underwood and Cassandra Bruno scored a pair of third quarter goals in a 7-2 loss to Cocalico.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team is working hard to snag that first win of the season but came up empty over the last week. Solanco suffered losses to Donegal (7-3) on Sept. 22, and Cedar Crest (2-0) on the 24th
Those seven goals against Donegal were the most Solanco has given up this season. The Indians lead Section Three with 33 goals scored and took a 4-0 first half lead over the Mules.
“We took a chance and made some changes,” said head coach Remy Wright of the second half. “I moved my wingbacks up as midfielders and got more aggressive and took my top center back and used him at striker.”
The second half proved to be a 3-3 ball game with Brady Janssen notching a hat trick for the Mules.
“Brady scored on a penalty kick, a set piece at the 18 and on defense of pressure on the keeper,” recalled Wright.
At Cedar Crest Saturday morning, the Falcons took control with 13 corners and 16 shots while holding the Mules to 1 and 3, respectively. They scored once in each half to earn the shutout. Ben Drumm (11 saves before being injured) and Giovanni Piscitelli (3 saves) shared time in goal.
TENNIS
The tennis team ran into the second-place team in Section Two on Friday, Sept. 23 and dropped a 7-0 result on the road. Despite the shutout, the game scores were competitive, especially Adrienne Dolan at No. 2 singles. She dropped a marathon match to Kathryn Barraclough 7-6, 5-7, 11-9.
CROSS COUNTRY
Before the harrier teams traveled to Maytown last Tuesday to take on the Donegal Indians, they competed in the Carlisle Invitational. Anthony Solis-Morales was the top finisher for the boys, claiming 47th place in a field of over 300 runners. He was the only Mule to place in the top 100. With 46 teams competing, Solanco finished 35th.
Emma Baxter was the top placer
for the girls, finishing 52nd and was also the only one to break the top 100. Daria Neaves was close, finishing 117th. A total of 251 runners and 38 teams competed. Solanco was 31st.
The girls’ team placed four runners in the top 10 against Donegal but the Indians had six and pulled away with a 21-36 victory. Baxter finished 3rd. Neaves (6th), Olivia Singleton (7th), Christine Wagner (8th) and Anna Linde (12th) rounded out the top five.
Wyatt Tomison raced to a first-place finish in 17:58 and James Hartigan was 3rd overall but a pack of seven Donegal runners sealed Solanco’s fate and a 24-37 loss. Ian Althoff (11th), Curtis Hills (12th), Rusty Armstrong (14th) and Dominic Arbogast (16th) accounted for the scoring.
FOOTBALL
Brody Mellinger passed for 69 yards and two TDs and rushed for 91 yards and three TDs to lead Solanco past Conestoga Valley 41-21 Friday, Sept. 23. Eljah Cunningham added 94 rushing yards, snagged one TD pass, and picked off another as the Mules improved to 5-0 overall.
“Elijah had a heck of a game, his best this year,” lauded head coach Tony Cox. “The defense did a great job and we cut down on the special teams’ mistakes. And a lot of kids got Friday night lights action. That’s always good.”
Cole Harris (53 rushing yards) scored the only TD of the first quarter, a six-yard run. Mellinger’s one-yard keeper made it 13-0. After a 56-yard score by CV, Noah Baber hauled in a 45-yard strike from Mellinger, followed by Aden Herr’s twopoint run, and Cunningham
was the recipient of a 24-yarder that made it 28-7 at the half. Josiah Forren’s (7 tackles) interception set up Cunningham’s score.
Mellinger’s one-yard keepers in the third and fourth quarters maintained Solanco’s lead as the Bucks also found the endzone twice. Nick Defrancesco, Landon Steele, and A. Herr combined for 19 tackles
Brown, Sarah Landis, Kara Peace, and Abby Landis, with her first goal of the season, rounded out the scoring.

always be aware of their surroundings,” said Harper, who recommends taking a situational safety class to learn what concerning behaviors look like. “Be aware of vehicles (that are) parked nearby. Is there anyone near them? What are (those people) doing?” Harper encourages people to trust their instincts. “If you feel uneasy, cross the street,” he said. “Walk near a residence or where you see other people so there are other witnesses involved.”
Of course, being aware also means being alert. “Make sure you’re not distracted,” said Harper. “People like to crank up the music, and they wear earbuds, so they don’t hear a vehicle coming up behind them (or) they don’t hear the stones moving on the walkway or highway when someone
is running up behind them or from behind a bush,” he explained. “I tell people, ‘Keep one earbud out or keep your volume down so you have some hearing.’”
Another recommendation from Harper is to always carry pepper spray. “Have it clipped to your waist in case you’re in a situation where you need to defend yourself and create separation (between you and a threat),” said Harper, who recommends learning to use the spray properly. “We teach people to aim starting at the chest and (moving) upward,” said Harper, who noted aiming only for the eyes will not work if the assailant tries to duck. “Starting out at the chest and zig-zagging upward will maximize the effectiveness due to the vapors of the pepper spray rising upward,” he said.
Some things that can help keep you safer should be done before you even think of leaving your home. Steps such as varying the time that you walk or run and changing up your route on a regular basis are simple ways to decrease your risk. “Definitely change your routes and your times if necessary,” said Harper. “(Predators) watch for a pattern so they can plan on that behavior.” Harper recommended altering driving routes for the same reason.
Thanks to technology, there are now phone applications that can alert those closest to you using a key word or PIN. Some apps will alert chosen individuals to your GPS location or record sound or video for an extended amount of time. “If something would happen, (the app) will start notifying the people who are important to you so they can start sharing that information with authorities,” Harper said.
Harper also advises taking a basic self-defense course. “If you are a victim of an attack, it’s nice to have options to escape a certain kind of hold or grab,” he said. “The basics of certain tactics do work to create separation.”

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.
It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.
In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page
